"Just before sunrise, after less than a mile's walk through the rolling hills of the Tuscan countryside, I reached this 3,000-year-old travertine hot spring believed to have sprouted in the Etruscan era. Set just below an old stone mill, its steamy, sulfuric pools are ringed with white pebbles and rest at around 100 degrees Fahrenheit, inviting me to drop my robe and tiptoe in. Save for a few other intrepid early risers and with the crowds yet to arrive, I floated beneath the waterfalls, savoring the oasis as it soothed and transported me. I couldn't help but imagine what it felt like when the Etruscans—and later the Romans—came here seeking healing, long before any nearby resort or hotel existed." - Michaela Trimble
