Discover a hidden gem in Chinatown’s 88 Market, where fresh sushi and wagyu beef shine in a cozy, intimate setting that feels like a world apart.
"Tucked away on the second floor of Chinese grocery emporium 88 Marketplace, this sushi bar has mostly flown under the radar since opening two years ago. Unlike typical food court vendors, 312 Fish Market gets products fresh from Japan. Former Sushi-san chef and co-partner Joe Fung delivers premium bites of fatty otoro, A5 wagyu, and uni alongside other highlights like hotate seared in truffle oil and Kobujime-style cured madai. The party platters are also a popular option as they contain an assortment of maki, nigiri, and sashimi. There’s limited counter seating but customers can take their orders to go or eat in the common dining area." - Naomi Waxman
"Konbujime Medai We recently went to 312 Fish Market, a sushi restaurant located in the 88 Marketplace on the border of Chinatown and Pilsen. There are several restaurants inside this giant supermarket, but 312 is the only one that has its own seating, which includes a sushi counter. Considering that this spot is from a former chef of Sushi-san, it’s not surprising that all our bites of nigiri were really good. But our favorite was the konbujime medai - the snapper had a ton of rich flavor from the curing, and the fish was topped with a pop of citrus to round the bite out." - adrian kane
"Located on the second floor of 88 Marketplace, this sushi restaurant inside the supermarket is a good pivot if the wait for Qiao Lin is the same length as It’s A Wonderful Life (two hours and nine minutes, to be exact). 312 Fish Market has excellent sashimi, nigiri, and maki, along with starters like seared tuna tataki with smoked jalapeño shoyu. There’s a decent amount of counter seating, so it’s perfect if you need a solo escape from your family. If you’re not trying to hide from your relatives, then grab a table with them and split one of the party platters." - adrian kane, john ringor
"It’s easy to dismiss Chicago seafood when our closest bodies of water are Lake Michigan and a river we love dying green. But you can find fantastic sushi at this oasis in Chinatown’s 88 Marketplace food court. 312 always has excellent cuts of fish, whether you like simpler nigiri or sashimi, or like your salmon and tuna neatly wrapped in rolls topped with tobiko, salted egg yolk sauce, or chili garlic sauce. Bring some friends to tackle a party platter, and pick out your favorite beer, sake, or soju from 88 Marketplace’s booze aisle—this place is BYOB." - john ringor, veda kilaru, nick allen
"This casual sushi spot is located in 88 Marketplace on the border of Chinatown and Pilsen. There are several restaurants inside this giant supermarket, but 312 is the only one that has its own seating, which includes a sushi counter. And considering that this place is from a former chef of Sushi-san, it’s not surprising that all their maki, sashimi, and nigiri are really good (and also pretty affordable). You can order one of their platters that has an assortment of everything for takeout, or just sit down and grab a bite during the middle of your weekly grocery shopping. Whatever you do, be sure to get the konbujime medai—the cured snapper has a ton of rich seaweed flavor and is topped with a pop of citrus to round the bite out." - adrian kane, john ringor, veda kilaru
