"686 Bar is a hot spot cocktail bar located above Em." - David Shortell

"If you’re having dinner at Em, your next move should be a martini upstairs at 686 Bar. Waiters wear crisp white jackets, and there’s a bit of a 1950s energy to the very dark, moody, incense-heavy space. And while it doesn’t attempt to be a proper restaurant, they do make an extraordinary burger, which might be a good idea for a second dinner after you’ve had two or three of those martinis. Reservations are definitely recommended, so make one of those in advance." - guillaume guevara

"Located above EM (also on this list), 686 impeccably edits classic cocktails for a 2022 drinking audience. Enjoy pre- or post-dinner libations like the Aviator, a take on an Aviation made with Armonico gin, St. Germain, and citrus, or the much sought-after Negroni Sbagliato (which was on the menu here before the cocktail’s viral moment). If the drinks make you a bit hungry, indulge in fried chicken or roasted baby corn." - Natalia de la Rosa, Daniela Galarza

A great spot if you're looking for a chic, unique sort of atmosphere. The bar was very dark and intimate. Minimal design with urban pop / hip hop music playing in the background. The featured drinks were well-made craft cocktails. The dark atmosphere definitely makes the presentation of the drinks pop. I believe the appetizers change regularly. We ordered a few which I would rate as all good, but nothing that was extraordinary or stood out as must-haves. I enjoyed sitting at the bar, but If you're going here with more than 2 or 3 people I'd recommend making reservations so you can get one of the few tables available.

Atmosphere 7/10 Speakeasy located above a restaurant, with an entrance on the side of the building, a door with a “686” sign. Inside is a very dark and intimate atmosphere with indirect light and hip-hop music (pleasant volume). Equally balanced bar and table seating. The backbar has a lot of potential for improvement… Drinks 6/10 Recommendation: Bananas in Paradise Very simple menu design and very simple presentation of drinks. No garnish, no coasters. Minor ice cube design with a “686” logo. The drinks tasted good, but nothing special. Service 5/10 Also regarding service - not much to report. Water served on request. Staff seems cool. Prices are about average for CDMX. Drinks were served fast.

Very cool bar, felt like a little brother to handshake. Open 2 years and you can tell they are striving to be a top bar in CDMX. A little polish on the decor will get them there, the cocktails are great and the music is bumpin.

Our server had an excellent knowledge about every cocktail on the menu and recommended a tailored one based on our preferences. The speakeasy is a great place to have a conversation with friends or a date!

Maybe I was expecting too much, but that’s only because this bar has been named one of the top 50 bars in North America. It is a speakeasy located above Em with good drinks and an intimate vibe. However, we found their drinks to be quite small for what you pay. My martini specifically was served very small with a singular unpitted olive and no toothpick. Not to mention their house gin for a martini is Beefeater. I did really enjoy their mezcal drink but if you are a martini lover I would recommend miralto or ling ling over this bar. And if you’re looking for the speakeasy experience, handshake does it best.

Hidden place on top of a restaurant. You have to walk through the kitchen of the restaurant in order to get upstairs. Nice speakeasy with great drinks. Upscale place. Awesome date spot.

Classic cocktail menu plus some nice touch of their own creations, which makes the speakeasy a true gem. I have to give the grilled babe corn a five star alone !!!

Step one: ask the hostess for EM to show you to the bar Step two: be led through the kitchen as the hostess says "hola cocina!" To which they respond in perfect unison "Hola Bienvenidos!", which felt straight out of "The Menu" Step 3: Be led up the spiral staircase and be expertly seen to by Fernando. Apparently he started the bar and left to open another bar. Finally he's returned here to set the menu correct after his time away. Make sure to ask him what he's working on next, it's sure to be delicious.
