Christmas eve...just off of the morning Larkspur ferry. As a treat I had an olive roll! Loved every bite as it's likely the only bread I will have over the holidays! So worth it too!

This bakery was bustling when we arrived. There was a long line but it moved quickly. The selection of breads and pastries was expansive, but we got a cinnamon roll and a cardamom cake. The pastries were soft but flaky, packed with spices and flavor. The staff were very sweet as well, offering extra pastries and friendly conversation.

Cute bakery within the Ferry Building selling a wide range of pastries. Tried the lemon madeleine which is a bit dry but still tasty. I also tried the special pizza (fennel cheese olive) which looks scrumptious but I wish they had offered to warm it up as it was all cold and quite hard to bite. Price is reasonable and I will try coming back to try other items as it looks good though I wouldn’t say my first experience was the best

I lived in the area for 20 years and it hard to believe that I never reviews this bakery which is wonderful, I really started to purchase bread from them on regular basis during covid where this was one of very few establishments that was open and I never stopped. They are large array of products from sweet, savory to of course all kinds of breads. They walnut is delicious but the classic baggette is just perfect and focaccia is of so yummy. There is no seats but plenty around Ferry Building. CC accepted Vegan bread available. Ingredients clearly marked on most of their breads.

Best place to get fresh bread of all kinds! They have a lot of options for you to choose, from Madeleine to olive bread. They also have sandwiches served on a baguette for breakfast/lunch, really delicious! Staff is really friendly and prices are good. I’d definitely come back whenever I get the chance to get my fresh and tasty bread of the day!

When you gotta have good carbs, go to Acme. They have the best pastries in the city. You can not go wrong here. Shortbread cookies are delicious and so is the amazing bread selection. The line moves quickly. The only downside is they can’t slice the bread for you.

Stopped by here on a Sunday morning hoping for some good quality croissants. The staff was very unfriendly and she looks super unhappy and grumpy. The almond croissant was very dry, stale, small and definitely not high quality. Tasted very average. Wont recommend.

I love Acme bread. I usually get Pain de mie, sour loaf, sourdough cheese roll (like the one in the picture), and sometimes the vanilla madeleines. I make my own breakfast at home using their breads. I don’t come by everyday so what I do is I buy about 5 loaves that I slice, bag in pairs with ziplock, and freeze at home. I then thaw and toast them when it’s time to make a breakfast sandwich. They also sell day old bread, wrapped or bagged properly for half the price. When you come by especially in the morning, check their day old items which are usually on the left side wall shelf. I tried a day old Pain de Mie once and it’s as good as the freshly baked ones. They don’t have price tags on their breads so you have to ask if you’re curious.

I have been coming here for years, only bakery thar stayed open during covid. Their bread & pastry are wonderful and delicious. They make fantastic sourdough like nobody's business. The array of breads & sweet/savory pastries is impressive. CC accepted

Good bread, fast service. Came here on a Saturday afternoon and the line was a medium length but was going fast. The workers are friendly and efficient The bread and pastries are so tasty! I got a variety of loaves and muffins and have enjoyed them all

Yummy! Great place to stop any time you are nearby the Ferry Building. Acme bread is an SF treat, many restaurants tout that they serve their burgers, sandwiches, etc on Acme bread and while it is delicious in those settings, nothing beats getting it fresh from the stand at the Ferry Building. They have dozens on breads on display. It is so much to take in. And while the staff is lovely and friendly, they do rush you a bit to decide. It is a bit stressful to decide very quickly without being able to see until you get to the register, limiting your ability to take in all the options. I often find something else delectable that I wish I had added afterward once I've had a chance to look around. So to Acme Bread Company, give us a chance to look, we will spend more, we promise!

Every time I go to the Ferry Building I drop by here. I love their bread. This time I got the olive loaf, the olive slab and the pumpkin bread. I almost never have something here I do not like- although I did not like the pannettone here. It was pretty dry. It's the only thing I have not liked here. The croissants are fabulous. Every single bread has been wonderful (my kids love the epi bread). There is usually a line but it moves super fast- the folks who work here have skills!

I've got one word: COME. I live for bakeries like this. Nothing beats bread made from scratch with tons of love added. I couldn't help myself when I came to try their stuff. I got a cheese roll, mushroom pocket (at least that's what I think it's called), and some other stuff. Regardless of what your order, I can guarantee that it's going to be delicious. Outside of the good, the service is great. Just be aware it's not a well-kept secret, so you're going to have a line depending on the time of day. Also, this place is located in a terminal building, so they don't offer seating.

Excellent all around bakery. Highly recommend; everything is good. Their day old selection is very reasonably priced considering quality.

After holiday lunch at The Waterfront Restaurant, my friends and I walked to the Ferry Marketplace Building. I love the various vendors - restaurants, bakeries, ice cream, coffee shops and other retail businesses. We decided to stop at Acme Bread Company. Somebody in the group wanted sourdough bread. With me, I have a weakness for bread. Wow! Carbs overload! Excellent selection of assortment of breads. So many choices and so little time to decide if one is a first time customer, and such is my case of what I want to purchase. It's retail therapy and impulsive shopping on my part. Quick in a flash, I grabbed a bag of vanilla madeleines, and asked for one butter croissant. I don't like to keep other customers in line waiting to purchase baked goods. I did not want to look like some kind of indecisive woman or fickle in the mind. I guess another visit in the near future would be helpful. LOL. Finally, I left with two of my friends and managed to catch the ferry back to Alameda. We made it just in time to board.

If you've dined at any popular restaurant in the Bay Area that served bread, you've likely had Acme Bread before. This store, located inside the Ferry Building Marketplace, is one of two(?) retail fronts since they are primarily a wholesaler. Even though I've seen walls of Acme Bread offered at local supermarkets, the selection offered at this store can't be beaten. They're selling breads and pastries I haven't even heard of. There is often a line during peak hours but the service is speedy and friendly. It's a great place to grab a snack to meander along the waterfront with. Just don't get too close to the seagulls if you're heading north to Pier 39. Despite their excellent reputation, everything here is priced reasonably and I always feel like I'm getting a deal here. I'm happy I get to try a variety of their goods through TGTG because I would not have otherwise purchased them. There is no seating provided by the store but there is publicly available seating inside and surrounding the Ferry Building. It might be hard to nab a spot if its already crowded that day, but bread and pastries are great walking food too!

Great spot to buy bread and pastries in the ferry building! The best part is that it's part of too good to go (an app to reduce food waste at the end of the day) and you can get amazing deals on it. We got this entire selection of bread for $4.99 only. It was super worth it as we normally would buy their loaves of sourdough anyways. Would highly recommend buying their sourdough bread and through too good to go for a great steal!

Great place in the Ferry Building to pick up some SF sourdough bread and biscuits! Anywhere with a line in this building is pretty good, which includes Acme, but this line moves quite quickly. It's in a great historical building, nice to take a stroll, with a magnificent view of the Bay Bridge outside.

Loved the flavors of the seasonal pizza slice -- I got the one topped with squash, fontina cheese, pesto, and onions. Such a unique and yummy flavor combo, and I loved how the squash was pleasantly creamy! However I felt that the slice was a bit too oily for my liking. I had to wipe my mouth after every bite because of the excess oil. I also wish they warmed up my slice because it was slightly cold. (Maybe I had to ask). Loved the chewiness of the dough though -- so satisfying to eat. One slice was a little over $6 after tax and was definitely filling enough for a morning/lunch meal. Service here is super quick. Although there isn't any seating inside the store because it's just a grab and go type place, there are plenty of seating options nearby or even outdoors, because it's located in the Ferry Building.

So I will be upfront and candid here. I am a self-proclaimed bread snob but I caveat this with the full disclosure that I am not a snob to anything else. I'm a carb fiend! I have an inkling I came out of the womb sniffing my way to find the absolute best artisan bread. Seriously, no joke! With that said, I make it a point to try as many bakeries as possible that offer country loaf or naturally leavened bread. The best I have had so far is Tartine - that dark crust that upon cutting into, reveals an open crumb and upon a bite, it's like a world of magical moist chewy gluttony or is it gluten-y? But Tartine's country loaf is huge and also, visiting with no car in SF and b/c Tartine has several locations now in my hometown, it didn't make sense to trek down to Tartine. So upon stumbling onto Acme while at the Ferry Building, I had to check it out. First of all, there was a long line but it gave me time to eye the store and scope it out and wow, the variety of bread this place has is amazing. They display all their breads on the counter so you can see the size and shape of them...and all were very reasonably priced, c'mon, at this day and age of inflation, Acme could charge so much more for their magical creations...but they don't. Thank you Acme for not being some blood-sucking greedy dealer slanging me a hit of gluten! With all the options from baguettes to school bread to sweet vs. sour bread, for a boring person like me who typically opts for a country loaf, you can understand why and how I ended up feeling overwhelmed...well, the associate at the register was very helpful with answering my questions and helping me out. Acme, another thank you...for hiring delightful and helpful people who actually like people! So I walked away with a small sour round and a Levain something round for around $10. WOW! You know that feeling that despite paying for something, you feel a little bit like you stole from them...well, that was me. I ended up preferring the sourdough but both were solid bread. My final verdict and if I'm going to close with the same candor as I did going into this, Tartine still has my heart (sadly, no one has been able to take its championship title...hey, it's not my fault they make their bread so damn well) but if Acme was down here in the LA area, I might struggle deciding between the two places.

Now Acme is a place where standing in line is worth it! I went over the weekend and was blown away. So many fresh bread and pastry options. I got a few cheddar biscuits, a jalapeño & cheese turnover, and their pizza special. Everything was delicious. I didn't get a chance to take a picture of the turnover, it was so incredible I devoured it in a few bites. The pizza was perfectly cooked, the right amount crunch with fresh toppings. Acme will now be forever be my first stop when entering the ferry building.

Acme is primarily a wholesale bakery but has few retail shops, and this one is located inside ferry building marketplace. They make fresh bread daily, and the staff here is very friendly. I like their olive roll and twinkle sourdough.

Just ok... bought walnut and cranberry loaf, and some jam biscuits. They don't do slicing and staff wasn't friendly. Now I got to figure out how to share that loaf with no knife as I'm staying in a hotel nearby.

Everyone knows about acme and their breads - it speaks for itself. But I personally love their small bite pastries and the flavors they have. The have a flaky ginger pear puff that is literally just one or two bites but the filling is so light, flavourful, and not too sweet which keeps me coming back.

My favorite favorite spot in the Ferry Building. Oh, where do I start! The salami sandwich is my lunch go to. The potato sandwich is divine. The crusty bread with tender interior and their butter -- it's divine! The mushroom turnover is equally delish: buttery + mushroom + cheese. The pizza of the day is the best deal in all of the ferry building. All the breads... epi, walnut levain, milk bread, raisin rabbit,... The cookies and the madeleines Everything is so good here

ACME is my favorite bakery in San Francisco however their bags are the main cause of stress for me. Recently I purchased a loaf and was handed a no-handle paper bag. The bag ended up having oil stains on in that stained my jacket when I handled it. Please consider exploring alternative bag options that are both environmentally friendly and resistant to oil stains. Your bags are diminishing customer experience.

This place is located in the middle of the ferry building and close to a lot of other neat places to eat. We went on a Sunday and the line was not super long. We got the green onion bread and it was amazing. The outside was firm and the inside was soft and fluffy! It was a perfect daytime snack. They also have an assortment of other pastries which looked delicious. I will finely go heat again!

Pain epi is my all time favorite bread. I order two each time. Perfect with Mt. Tam triple cream.

While visiting San Fran we stopped into the Ferry Building and picked up some vanilla madeleines and a jam biscuit! Both were delicious and our service was quick and nice! It is a food stall but the ambiance still feels like a small bakery. 10/10 would highly recommend and I will be back!

Hidden so peacefully within San Francisco's famous Ferry Building, Acme Bread is simply a "must have" on the Embarcadero. While the Acme Bread Company was established in Berkeley, California in 1983 -- their second location is beautifully placed in the ferry building, which is open early, warm and cozy, and hosted by an incredibly courteous cast of hosts. They have a day old basket that is filled in the morning with some VERY popular items for half(?) the price. I have taken advantage of this and have gotten cookies, scones, loaves of bread, among many other sweet and savory treats. Acme Bread has really great breads, however their whole wheat bread has really grown on me for breakfast with an egg or for a simple sandwich. The cheddar and chive biscuits are best warmed with butter (INCREDIBLE!), and the rolls are pretty good too. Alongside my order, the host who is assisting me usually suggests a spread or another type of pastry best on my favorites -- which I really appreciate. I have yet to find an item I have not like at Acme Bread, and I am so happy and incredibly lucky to have a great local baking company!

We came here looking for bread to snack on and were kinda overwhelmed by all of the bread options. The guy at the counter was super friendly and helpful, and explained each bread for us. He recommended the sorta cross buns, which they only have on weekends. We ended up getting 2 of the the sorta cross buns and the twinkle bread. The buns were delicious, with various yummy fruit bits and soft bread. The twinkle was a bit hard at the ends, but the crust was really crispy and crunchy, and made a for great snack.

Waited in line. Surprised there wasn't much chocolate in the croissant. The cheese roll was disappointing. Baguette. Was long but nothing special. Even the almond croissant was nothing special.

As always, the buttermilk jam biscuits are AMAZING!!! I've also tried the chocolate croissant, which was awesome. I am so glad I got all of this before I go gluten-free and crab free. No more bread, pasta The service was good. There were two cashiers, but the line was crazy. I felt like it was not moving. There was no ambiance, just a very crowded ferry building with lots of lines going in every direction.

We got a couple of the savoury turnovers, wish they could have heated them up. Should have gone sweet instead. Regardless they were really good pastries, delicious. Would check this place out again.

I can't imagine a trip to SF without stopping at Acme Bread! One visit and you'll understand. Our recent trip was a pass through the area on our way North and we had to pull over for a few of the sandwiches that are so good they'll make you dream up excuses to travel to SF just to grab one. We all grabbed a Cheese sandwich and a Salame sandwich and headed to the bridge for a picnic. Heaven! As good as the sandwiches are - and they are good! - be sure to buy as much bread as you can carry. Try everything! My only warning is that they often sell out so go early.

Acme never fails my supply of sourdough rounds and olive bread for the week. A must stop whether passing through for the day, or preparing for dinner at home with a charcuterie board, wine pairing, or homemade clam chowder. Acme (like their competitor along the wharf - Boudin), has been around for many years and conveniently located in the Ferry Building along the Embarcadero. A smaller shop, that offers several shapes and sizes for your liking, taste. Always friendly, and quick to pack when heading home. They also offer cheesy melts (back by popular demand), and simple brew of coffee. Be sure to stop by when passing through. Makes a great gift when meeting with friends for dinner or souvenir from San Francisco.

ACME always has good bread...on the way to the Giants game the usual coffee spot was closed for whatever reason. So. I had a cup of coffee here and it was fine. I could not reasonably transport bread for the game so next time!

Long time fan, but haven't reviewed until now. Acme is one of my main stops every time I visit the ferry building for fresh and high quality sourdough bread and pastries. I usually get their sour loaf and whatever cookies they have in stock, always delicious and never too sweet. The employees are friendly and patient with questions about their products. They don't slice the loaves in order to prevent the need for preservatives, which justifies having to do it yourself at home if you're conscious about extra ingredients. Their counter has all their breads on display and they tend to have more stock in the back if you come in the earlier hours, especially on Saturdays when the farmers market is happening. Almost always has a line during busy hours, but they move quick. Make a visit if you haven't been yet.

We decided to stop here after seeing people eating baguettes of bread. They have so many choices from French bread, rustic bread, sandwiches, and even sweet bread. They have very friendly and fast service. We bought a French baguette and a pesto sandwich. The pesto was delicious with the bread and my child loved the baguette. I definitely recommend this place if you are at the Ferry building.

The best place to get a classic Sourdough bread!! Acme has been my newly found go-to for all of my freshly baked goods. I go through an entire loaf probably every two weeks. They're located in the Ferry Building (and it's respective Farmers Market), and I've also caught eye of it at the Mountain View Farmers Market. Their breads are affordable, and they have such a variety that anyone could find anything there. Their pizzas also look so good although I've never had it myself!

Took the ferry across from Larkspur to SF for a family holiday party. We were meeting up at our hotel prior to the main party and doing some snacks. As we walked by Acmes spot the smell of bread was intoxicating and irresistible. Oh yeah we needed a loaf of bread with our cheeses and deli meats. We grabbed a loaf of bread and it was the perfect accompaniment to what we brought. The hardest part was settling on one loaf and which one. So many choices for our next visit to SF.

Saturday is for fresh bread and a ham and cheese turnover from my favorite bakery. I just love the people here they are spunky if you take the time to engage them. The ambiance, let's say it is super important that you get your bread early or they will sell out. 10 stars

Acme Bread is a go-to for quality bread throughout the city and its many restaurants. However, pastries don't seem to be their strong suit. They aren't amazing cold and I highly recommend you toast them at home if that's an option. Their croissants in particular taste like... well... bread. Good bread, but they don't quite nail the flaky on the outside, soft on the inside, fragrant buttery taste. To be fair, maybe this wasn't the best spot for my croissant fix, and next time I would opt to pick up a baguette or sandwich instead. I do like that they offer day-old goods at a steep discount (half price) and their cheddar chive biscuits are delicious.

Just wanted to comment that although I dig the bread, this location is seriously lacking in the personnel dept. 'Tis the holidays so naturally everyone is stressed and pressed and all that. I was on a quest for dinner rolls and had checked out the website to make sure I was ready to order. Luckily when I arrived there was basically no line at all. Up to order, I ask about the Rustic Rolls, and the employee informs me they are out of stock. I ask about a different type of roll I had memorized from the menu, and apparently they only had one roll left... The employee promptly and palpably becomes becomes exasperated with me and declares that the bread they have in stock is represented by the samples on the counter in front of me and he then hurries away because I am such a waste of time and space. Eventually, he returns and I ask for half a dozen of one of the representational rolls on the counter. Visibly annoyed, he plucks the sample roll from the counter-top and declares that they are out of those, too. I give a chipper thankyousomuch! and continue on my quest to get rolls elsewhere. Now when I walk by I can't help but think of it as A-hole Bread Company. What a shame.

Definitely a slice above, Acme in the Ferry Building is only one of two retail outlets for this beloved local bread seller. Perfectly crusted Acme loaves have been around forever (the 80s) served at restaurants around the Bay Area including Chez Panisse. This and their Berkeley store are the spot to go for the best and the freshest selection, including countless styles of loaves, pastries, rolls and pain au chocolate. The working kitchen is co-located with their retail space, so coming here near baking time is heavenly. The retail staff is exceptionally friendly, patient and personable. Come early on the weekend and try at least one loaf and several pastries. My favorites include: the pear ginger mini puff pastries, pain au chocolate, sourdough cheese wheel (taken home & heated) and pain au levian (makes the best toast.) One of my favorite stops in the Ferry Building.

Acme is my favorite bread in SF, or probably anywhere for that matter. I always pick up a loaf when I'm at the Ferry Building. Sometimes I'll just buy a baguette and start ripping pieces of it off to snack on while I'm walking on the waterfront.

Acme Bread is not just a bakery; it's an experience. It's a place where you can munch on some of the finest baked goods in town. If you're a bread lover like me, this is a must-visit spot. The combination of quality, price, and the delightful atmosphere in the Ferry Building makes it a five-star destination for any food enthusiast.

One of the best things about living in the Bay Area are the bakeries and Acme is a mainstay. Fresh quality bread at very reasonable prices available conveniently. Honestly, the other baked goods are not the best. They are good, but you can easily get better elsewhere. But Acme makes up for this by having some of the best and by far most affordable sandwiches in FiDi. Though relatively small, they pack a punch flavor wise and are less than $9 each. I had the potato sandwich which was way better than carbs on carbs should have been.

GREAT little pastry shop/bakery. Picked up a fresh savory pastry here and was able to get it warmed up which really added to the fluffiness. The staff is very nice and welcoming, the space is well decorated, and everything is fresh. Loved visiting this location and would certainly go back! - Pros: fresh goods, nice staff, cute decor, welcoming - Cons: no complaints here! I walked here but I'm guessing the only con might be trying to get here with a car due to limited parking at the ferry building.

Went there during my trip to SF and bought a sour rye small. The bread was in general good. It was made mainly with rye flour and with sourdough starter. Had a dense inner, tasted a little nutty, a little sour and a little bitter, which was just the flavor I looked for. However note that the staff would not help slice the bread :(

Nice bread and pastry all the time. If they can offer slice service that will be perfect.

You can't leave the Saturday Ferry Plaza Farmers Market without buying one of their many baked items and the Epi pull apart is one of our favorites. Note, someone in our family couldn't resist pulling off one piece before we got home. Also pictured is their almond croissant which goes nicely with a hot cup of coffee or tea.

I love this gem! The bread is fresh but not hot. I liked the packed chocolate chip cookies as well as the cheddar biscuit. I got them half off or 25% the day old. Still really good. I looooove the bread that has loaves coming off it. Very affordable. Very good and very fresh. I think the panchetta farmers market sandwich place uses this bread as well. Highly recommend this place y

Every time I pass by here on weekends there is a long time. I was taking my stroll to the ferry building and saw there was a small line of 5-7 people a little before 8am on Friday. I decided to give them a try. I ordered the Pain au Chocolat & Lemon Madeleine. They were just okay, nothing to rave about. The pain au chocolat was also room temperature. I was here 5 mins after opening so I was very surprised to have received a room temperature pastry. I had to take this home to warm it up. But even warmed up it was just okay.

Long overdue review but I've had acme bread on a number of occasions, both direct and indirect (their bread used for other restaurants). And they make one of the best breads I've ever had! Like who knew, you would say that the bread is the star of the show in a dish! Only with Acme. If everybody used acme bread for whatever they're cooking, it would honestly take that dish to the next level. Let ya gurl know if you know any viet places using acme bread for their banh mi! If not, I'll just make it myself.
