The Best Vietnamese Restaurants in Portland | Eater Portland

"From the same family behind Ha VL comes Belmont Street’s latest destination restaurant, a place for daily soup offerings and comforting Vietnamese small plates. This is the family’s third restaurant, the second being Rose VL, and the business takes over the former Batterfish space. Head here for hủ tiếu Mỹ Tho, rice noodles in a pork and seafood broth with quail eggs and pork liver, amongst other regional delights." - Janey Wong

The Best Restaurants on Belmont Street in Portland, Oregon | Eater Portland

"Taking over the former Batterfish space, husband-and-wife restaurant dynamos Christina Luu and William Vuong set up their newest restaurant Annam VL in fall 2023. The couple expand on what made Rose VL and Ha VL successes in the first place: classic Vietnamese soups alongside “unfamiliar regional soups we’ve enjoyed as a family,” according to an Instagram post. Expect two soup specials a day alongside rotating items like bahn mi and bò bía." - Katrina Yentch

The Best Bowls of Pho in Portland, Oregon | Eater Portland

"The newest addition to the “VL” family of restaurants follows the blueprint of two rotating soups per day. While noodle soup lovers can slurp tapioca noodles in a beef bone, chayote, and carrot soup or vermicelli in yellow curry broth here, pho is also available a couple of days a week. On Tuesdays, Annam brightens its pho ga with lime leaves. Saturday’s offerings include pho Annam, the restaurant’s take on beef pho with round steak, meatballs, and wide rice noodles, and a trusty pho bac containing sirloin beef and meatballs." - Janey Wong

This place is a fantastic place for high quality Vietnamese Pho and Soups. Please be ready and aware that they rotate their Pho/Soups by day of the week. This allows them to make each dish as fresh as possible and with as much flavor as possible. They do a have a good list of appetizers that will be there regardless of the day. Two appetizers will can be one person own meal. The Bahn Mi is really tasty and fresh and a reasonable side. The two soups my wife and I had were some of the most rich and flavorful Viet Soups we've ever had. The Chili oil is really really really good but be careful because it will hit you with a dry back of the throat burn. You won't feel like your mouth is on fire but if you overdo it you will be coughing like crazy. I highly recommend coming to this place the staff are super nice and caring about. They want to make really good food and share it with people. All the meats, meatballs, and viet cured meats are super tasty and high quality. Best I ever had in Portland.

You know how sometimes you muster all your strength to get out of the house and do something fun, get some good food, this place did the exact opposite of that. We got there around 7 for their street food pop up that ends at 9, literally half the menu was sold out, which was fine, but the food was so average, beef overcooked no flavor, i could have made this better at home. So no didn’t have a good time and just felt like a waste of my saturday night. on top of that the wait for the food was 30+ minutes.

Google
We got pho and some rice wrapped appetizers. They were ok. The bean sprouts smelled a little stale but they changed those for us up on request. The ingredients didn't seem fresh but were passable. We definitely had better ones elsewhere in Portland. I honestly do not understand the top rated reviews. Maybe we came on a bad day (Saturday lunch). They were busy but it's not like they had a line. The service was surprisingly slow for a place with limited menu options and pho, which typically have their broth ready. For comparison, we went to Rangoon Bistro and despite being busier and having a larger menu, we were served our first dish within 5 minutes. I'd say this place has potential but a pity we didn't get to experience it at its best.

This is definitely the best pho I’ve had in Portland and let me tell you, I’m Vietnamese and my mom makes incredible Vietnamese food including her pho. This is most reminiscent pho to my mom’s which is a huge compliment. I think a big part of why it’s so good because it comes in small batches. Make sure to get there earlier because they do sell out sometimes with that being said. They rotate between usually 2-3 options of soup per day. I went on a Saturday for their Phở Annam (wide rice noodles in a beef broth, seasoned round steak, and beef meat-ball. Garnished with green/white onion, coriander leaves, and cilantro) which is essentially a wide noodle version of your basic Pho. We also got the Goi Cuon or salad rolls and they were fresh and the sauce was delicious. Take note they don’t use the traditional parboiled pork but I ahead use char siu which I didn’t mind. The atmosphere is very clean and trendy. A quaint and small spot this place packs a huge punch in flavor. Their marketing is modern and fun and the music is 🔥🔥🔥. Their entire family all work together to run this place and you can taste the hard work and love in each. You’ll generally see mom, dad and their sons and girlfriends helping out alongside the other siblings and friends of the family. They’re all super friendly and welcoming as well. Highly recommend to anyone looking for a great bowl of Vietnamese soups or even soupless options!

Google
I wish I could give this place 6 stars! The Friday soups were unbelievably good. Can't wait to try the other days! The woman who served us fell in love with our baby and gave her free noodles and potatoes and shrimp. It was awesome. They're so friendly and you can tell the family puts a lot of love and hard work into their food..

Google
Amazing amazing amazing pho!!!! We went during their opening week a while ago and were obsessed with the daily changing menu. The soup was fantastic with lots of toppings. My companion wanted the soup to be saltier and the waiter brought out a mixture of sauces which he recommended we try if we wanted a bit more of a kick. Absolutely loved it, wish I could remember what it was. We also got the iced coffee which did not disappoint. Overall great food great experience. Will have to return.

Google
tldr: it was aight. decided to come here for the at night pop up; heard good things through word of mouth and reviews. vibes were great and service friendly, but then it started going downhill quickly. waitress mentioned some things sold out, which is okay, it happens, but then when ordering other choices, i was told they were also out, leaving literally half the menu sold out. cocktails/drinks were alright. the skewer appetizer was overcooked and oily. now heres the kicker: somehow, a table seated AFTER us received their spring rolls mains. and there was a table seated before us still waiting too. after finally receiving our food, the beef was also overcooked, a shame since it was the only protein for the rolls. the food quality and scuffed kitchen timing/service were saved by really friendly staff. dunno if its worth giving it another shot.

We love Anam VL! The soups are simply the best. The staff are always lovely, and it’s really fun to go different days of the week to try all the different soups.

Yelp
Yummy!! Tried for the first time and was impressed! They accommodated our group of 12 without a reservation which was awesome! The restaurant is small but has a cozy feel like the muted lighting. The drinks and food were awesome! Had a clarified milk tea to drink and it was so unexpected. Light and refreshing, I had 2! We ordered the salad rolls (you roll your own, fun)! We also got the quail, rice cakes and soft shell crab. All of it was delicious and flavorful! Would definitely come here again!

Yelp
My partner found out about this place while he was searching for some good places to eat. We all were getting fatigued from the bountiful options of Thai and American comfort and wanted some Vietnamese food to soothe the soul. We came across Annam VL as our last food stop before heading home to the Bay. As soon as we stepped in, we were greeted and immediately escorted to a table. I was surprised that the menu only had 3 options on a Sunday! Contrary to how Vietnamese restaurants like to capitalize on having bountiful options ranging from noodle soup to rice dishes to bread, it was definitely an interesting take to see a restaurant limit their selection of entrees per day! I went for the banh canh while my partner and besties went for bun bo hue. I could definitely see the spice and flavor differences from the Bay Area to Portland. The food wasn't bad, but it also didn't wow me like back home. I liked the decor of how the carrots were cut and the addition of chayote for that Vietnamese homemade soup feel. I wished the noodles were a bit more bouncier or gave off more chew as opposed to what I received that day. Nonetheless, it was a nice meal, accompanied by great customer service. The server came back several times to check in on us and it was nice to see him chatting with other regulars.

Yelp
Unfortunately was at a pop up and sadly didn't get a chance to try the food ...Sold out but vibe and energy was popping!! Definitely gotta go back to try food but the drinks was fire!! Family owned and operated small neighborhood spot!! Please go support this family owned neighborhood spot with great humans!!!

Yelp
Soup one or soup two. This is the trend for consistent pho broth. Slightly seasoned, very clean taste. Meat is not dry and tender throughout the bite and chew. Rolls are fresh but on the small side for fillings. Peanut sauce just ok. Service is easy and quick. Fast pho for a PDX precipitation day.

Yelp
I love that each day of the week features three different soups. We went on Sunday and tried all three. They were flavorful and comforting and perfect for a rainy cold day. The restaurant was full the whole time but we got seated very quickly and everyone was so nice even though they were very busy. They have lots of gluten free items too. We tried the GF dumpling appetizers and the dough was different and delicious. You should definitely go try this yummy Vietnamese restaurant!

Yelp
I came here a while ago on a Sunday morning, and was grateful to have gotten a spot. I've come multiple times before that but was out of luck because they were already sold out. So, I highly recommend coming as early as you can to ensure that you can get a bowl of whatever delicious food they're serving! The inside is bright with lots of natural lighting but has limited seating in comparison to the popularity of the restaurant. When I came here, I got the banh it tran and spring rolls for appetizers and the specials of the day (banh canh cha tom & bun bo hue). I loved the banh it tran and thought that the BBH was also really good. I was a bit underwhelmed from the spring rolls and the banh canh as I found that they just weren't *satisfying* (ie. the banh canh didn't have much other than the fish balls). Overall, while I love their concept of switching up the menu and focusing on a different dish each day, I feel like if you wanted a specific dish (unless it's a really rare find in Portland) you could always find another place that does it better.

Yelp
Came by for the soft opening of Annam by Night which is their evening service only on Fridays and Saturdays. We tried almost everything on the menu. The foods were so flavorful and authentic--felt like I was back in Vietnam. My favorite dish is their durian creme brûlée dessert. It was the perfect mixture of custard and durian. The service was amazing. They were attentive and consistently checked on us to make sure we have everything we needed. The combination of great food, throwback music, and lively social scene made it a fun atmosphere

Yelp
Arrived late night and wanted to try some of the daily soups but didn't know the soups are served only during the day time. The inside was cool with lots of seating and good vibes and music. Service was a bit slow with only one waitress for the entire floor both inside and outside. I watched for like 40 minutes as she moved around, disappeared but finally took our order. It was a waiting game. Tried the bot chien and Banh khot appetizers. The bot chien was super thin and over fried. There was no texture from the rice flour or tapioca starch. Some pieces were extra burnt. Only one egg that barely added any flavor to the dish. The sauce was tiny and not enough to dip each bite. Overall not great at $16 for fried flour and an egg. I've had it before at a different place and it tasted more like crispy potatoes (fluffy inside) with scrambled eggs. Filling and satisfying. Banh knot looked beautiful but wasn't crispy around the edges. Nice fresh herbs and lettuce but another $16 dish that was underwhelming. Came here for dinner and left hungry. Seems like a young crowd good spot to drink shots of henny but didn't satisfy. The young chefs tried their best but it was disappointing. Probably won't be back to try the soups in the daytime. Reminds me of luc lac before they went downhill in quality. Late night bar setup is a great idea but quality and execution are not on the late night menu.

Yelp
Somewhere I came across the recipe for Vietnamese beef stew, Bo Kho. It has cinnamon as a spice with a little tomato. So I'm trying it at restaurants before doing the recipe at home. Here they cook the broth for 4-5 hours. Then they assemble the dish with the beef, carrots, and wheat noodles. Chili oil, jalapeño, bean sprouts, basil and fresh lime come as a garnish. I ordered mine without the cilantro and raw onions on top. This is the perfect warming soup. Carrots in stews and soup are a natural sweetener. The beef was tender. The wheat noodles are very hot when the soup is assembled, maintaining the heat of the dish. The tomato flavor was just right, not overwelming. The soup is not cayenne spiced; there is chili oil you can add on the side. Portland loves independent small businesses. This is a family business with the grown children working front of house. They are very proud of their family and display some traditional figures he brought. There are some solid picnic tables outside and tables for 2 to 4+ inside. It is clean, new, and a welcome addition to close-in SE. The menu shows the soup schedule, there are many possibilities to try!

Yelp
If it's Saturday , this must be Mi Hoanh Thanh . A soup with pork broth , dumplings and noodles . Absolutely the best soup for my lunch . I believe there is not one soup , on the menu for any day , that would disappoint . Home run all around . Staff LIVES to serve . Beverages are sodas and others . Didn't ask about tea . Not crowded inside . It's a great accompaniment to Rose , and Ha VL . And a great addition to Belmont street.

Yelp
feels like homemade viet food! The soup was delicious without feeling too fatty. The noodles were cooked just right! The service is quick and very friendly. The inside is clean and modern w ample seating. The food comes out so quick. Overall feels like a good homemade viet soup noodle for a cold or rainy day

Yelp
A nice little restaurant that offers two selections of soup a day that changes each day. I opted for the bun rieu. It was flavorful and similar to others I've had in their other restaurants. It was a good sized portion. Took out two stars since they were out of banh mi. The restaurant was also out of Vietnamese coffee. She recommended another drink, which did not suffice.

Yelp
This is the third sister restaurant to Ha VL and Rose VL, and while the food is similar at it's core, there's some variations to it so it's worth a visit even if you've been to the other restaurants. Just like the other VL restaurants, Annam VL does a rotation of daily soup specials. Pricing is great too during this time in their lifecycle because they have promo pricing going on. For two bowls of soup and a Vietnamese iced coffee, it came out to be less than $40 after tip! I stopped by on 3 different days: soft open, grand open, day after grand open. You can tell they are still trying to sort out their new restaurant kinks (full weekly menu not available yet, mispellings on menu, etc), but the atmosphere as soon as you step foot into the restaurant is very much "welcome to my home, did you eat yet?" vibes. A wonderful addition to Belmont St, and this side of Portland in general! See below for my thoughts on all the soup dishes I tried. Thursday: - hu tieu my tho. This is a rice noodle dish, similar to what pho would look like except this is with a pork and seafood based broth (instead of beef like pho.) This variation from the My Tho region was delicious and such a nice change from the usual Nam Vang region version of hu tieu that you find at many other Vietnamese restaurants. The broth was savory with a slight sweetness that I would expect from hu tieu. Order this with a side of chili oil and you will love it! Saturday: - pho annam vl. With the restaurant name front and center on the dish, you know this had to be a must try special! This is a beef base broth, typical of pho. But with a northern Vietnam region twist - broth is much lighter and brighter flavor, very similar to the pho I had in Vietnam. This was not my favorite, which I already knew coming in because I much prefer a deeper southern style pho. BUT my friends all really enjoyed it. All up to preference so it's worth a try. - mi hoanh thanh (egg noodle with wontons). This was my absolute favorite out of all the dishes I tried! Broth was savory yet sweet, plenty of pork slices, and the wontons were cooked perfectly not too mushy. Highly recommend! Sunday: - bun bo hue. Spicy beef vermicelli soup. I really enjoyed this dish, but I wish it was served with a side of mam or what I call "stinky sauce" to deepen the flavor a bit. They also have several different appetizer and banh mi sandwiches to order all week. Everything tasted wonderful, but the star of the show would be the soups so I would recommend ordering soups if you are stuck in between decisions.

Yelp
Well I'm not buying a t-shirt, but it was pretty good. Warning: Showed up just before noon on a Sunday and spent 15 minutes waiting to order before waiting another 20 for drinks to come out, all *before* the brunch rush actually started arriving. Not sure if they were unusually understaffed, or training, or what.

Yelp
Finally a place for home made food so I don't have to ransack my aunts house! She agrees! The flavors here are solid and aren't over powering, it's got that home made taste. They rotate their menu and change the items daily. There's something comforting about aunties gossiping in the kitchen and the Asian music blaring softly in the background. BE WARNED - THEY CLOSE AT 4:30PM! Don't come expecting dinner - it does not exist. Yes, I cried internally too. Maybe one day. They sell out quite fast so I suggest getting here early. Apparently they are part of the HA VL family so you know the flavors have history! Server was awesome and super polite. He explained lots of the menu confusion to us and even checked in on us often. Space is super comfy and clean. We got the bun rieu and the broth was very clean and light, the crab rieu balls kind of shocked me with the flavor packed shrimp n crab essence. Portions are just right here so you may want to get an app if you are used to American portions.

Yelp
The level of care that goes into one humble bowl of soup from Annam VL is hard to imagine. An unimaginable depth of flavors that slaps your palate into a frenzy. A hot bowl of love. There are 3 soup choices per day. Perfected. Get all of them and take them home to remind you later of how good this meal was. There is also an appetizer menu. We had a fantastic dumpling filled with magic. Again, the depth of flavors are impossible to describe! Don't be afraid to try new things, you will not be disappointed! This is a small restaurant which feels like you have been invited in to someone's home. Comfortable and intimate. The service is the same, friendly and caring, like you can only wish for at home. This is a truly special restaurant with food you will be thinking about forever.

Yelp
Unique but limited menu with soups of the day to choose from. The Hú Tiēu Bò Kho was my most favorite as it was filling, the beef shank was the type to tear off into pieces as you bite into it-- not dry in any aspect. The service was fast and friendly and the restaurant was a, athletically pleasing, tiny bit neat spot.
google avatar

Mary J.

Yelp
Can't believe this place has only been open a little over a month now! What a gem!!! Came in for lunch last Saturday and it was busy but tables were being turned pretty often so we were quoted a 15-20 minute wait that ended up being closer to 10, no biggie. I will say it may be longer for a bigger group so just be prepared for that if you have more than 4 in your party. Service was excellent, staff was very attentive and friendly and I loved the ambiance inside. It's really cool how the menu changes everyday so I can't wait to come on different days to try more. Perfect portion sizes and prices, so happy this opened up!

Yelp
Okay, for the record, three stars is not bad, it's "a-okay" - my experience was totally satisfactory and I'd give it 3.5 stars if I could. My partner and I went on a Friday and each ordered a different soup, so that we could try them both. Both soups were really good and tasty. Reasons why I didn't feel it was "as good as it gets": - I like, and am accustomed, to having Vietnamese soups served with bean sprouts/holy basil/other herbs on the side - these soups are served with a small plate of what looks like a bagged salad mix of iceberg lettuce with a few bean sprouts sprinkled throughout, which I didn't feel add much to the dish. - I like being able to adjust my food to my spice preference, but there weren't any condiments on the table. The servers would only bring a small portion of chili oil at a time, and I didn't want to keep asking for more as they're busy. - I felt the portions were a little small for the soups being $17-18. I appreciate the love they put into the soup, but just wish there were some of the accoutrements to make it an even better experience.

Yelp
authentic viet food! reminds me of the bay area. for the shrimp skewers and bo la out. 10/10 and was exceptional. durian flan was out of this world

Yelp
The VL chain has enough of a reputation around Portland that I don't need to elaborate further. I love that I don't have to travel deep into SE anymore to eat their viet noodle soups. It's all about the broth here. Flavors are so deep and rich. The family that works here is very kind. They gave me the herb, bean sprouts and lime sides even though the pho annam I ordered doesn't typically come with it. The space is really nice, casual and clean. Like their other locations, they close early so you won't be able to get a late meal here. Pretty awesome they have that work/life balance.

Daniel T.

Yelp
I had the rice noodle in chicken broth, Shredded walking chicken. It was excellent. The waiter was great, a member of the owners family. He was friendly and told us a bit about the backstory of the VL restaurants. It is a small cozy spot - so space can be limited. I live in the neighborhood, so if it is too jammed - to go works well too!! I will be back soon.

Yelp
sunday soup :) the portions were perfect, my friend and I loved how refreshing the soup was and i would definitely come back again! it's such a cozy spot with great flavors !!

Yelp
Fantastic, every spot! Everything was perfect. I would recommend an area for diners to wait. But that's just a small complaint. Would recommend anytime all the time!

Yelp
I love this place. Nicest people serving the best food. Favorite dish is their pho ga that they serve on Thursday. Absolutely delish!

Yelp
Friendly, but very slow and inconsistent service. Once seated, it took 45 minutes to get our two soups. Our server was slow to take our order, while the other server hustled to get her orders in. Several tables who sat down after us got their soups before us -- there are only two daily soups! Luckily, the soups were delicious and arrived hot. Although, the small plate of Romaine lettuce, single piece of holy basil and small lime wedge that accompanied the yellow curry noodle soup was a tad disappointing. The ambiance was cheery and clean.

Yelp
Stopped in during the Portland snow/ice storm. Great little addition to the Belmont neighborhood. I love that they limit the menu to 2-3 options per day, making it much easier to decide than with a full menu. Be aware they sometimes run out a bit early so be prepared if going on the later side. The server was extremely friendly and took care to explain about the bowls and meats, as well as get our feedback. The food was excellent too. Hearty portions and delicious. The broths were packed with a nice aroma and flavor. Definitely will return. Great cold weather spot.

Yelp
I'm glad to see them open another location that's closer to town. We went on a Sunday, and their soup options were Banh Canh Cha Tom and Bun Bo Hue. My friend got the Banh Canh, and I got the BBH. I tried both the broths, and they were pretty clean. We also ordered a banh mi and salad rolls. The banh mi was pretty good, as the bread was nice and toasted. I am looking forward to coming on some other days to try the other soups.

Yelp
I went on both the Saturday and the Sunday of the grand opening weekend, as I was super excited to have more Vietnamese food options in the south east. Was a little bit of a zoo, and on Saturday I got the last seating while they were running out of food. Service was super harried, and there was a bit of confusion as three different people checked in on me/asked if I'd ordered/etc, but it eventually got sorted that they were down to one item, mì hoành thánh - "egg noodles in a chicken bone broth. Hoành thành (sic) meat ball(shrimp, ground pork, sesame oil, scallion) covered in wonton wrap. Sliced charsiu pork." Was a little disappointed, as I'd been hoping to have a rice noodle based dish, but the soup was solid. Service was a little more organized towards the end of my meal as the place was emptying out, and I got to ask a few questions about what they'd be featuring on their rotating menu. I was mainly curious if they'd offer bún riêu, which was still up in the air (but I see it on their Wednesday menu now). Sunday, I went early since I wanted a bit of choice on the menu, and ordered the bánh ít trân - "Poached sticky rice dumplings stuffed with mung beans. Garnished with green onions, fried shallots, dried shrimp, and served with sweet fish sauce", and the bánh canh cha tôm - "beef bone, chayote squash, and carrot broth with tapioca noodles. Shrimp and pork cake." I wasn't sure what to expect when I had ordered the rice dumplings, and was pleasantly surprised with the pretty presentation in a bowl, the dumplings in a small puddle of the sweet fish sauce, the garnish adding a nice aesthetic touch and some pickled carrots and radish rounding out the appearance. The dumplings reminded me of a Korean rice cake or the Japanese mochi (which I should have realized from the description). I'm the kind of person who doesn't really like overly sweet foods, and a small red bean filled rice cake is usually enough for me to fill my sweet tooth craving, so this was a bit of a surprise for me to have with my soup. That being said, it was good, if dessert like. The sweet fish sauce was a nice compliment to the rice cake and mung bean paste, while the carrot and radish with their bit of acidity were a nice complement to the dish. The soup was super comforting, making me think it'd be perfect if I felt some sniffles coming on or just a rainy day. The shrimp and pork cakes had a nice skin on them that contrasted their slightly spongy texture. "Tapioca noodles" had scared me, and when I first got the dish they were confusing, as they were too fat and short to comfortably use chopsticks on, before I realized they worked well in the spoon. In the end, the dish ended up reminding me of a rich, clear broth soup, the tapioca noodles being similar to dumplings, and the shrimp and pork cakes adding great flavor and texture. I tried to go last Friday as well (almost a week after the grand opening), but turned around after I saw a half-dozen or so folks waiting outside. 100% happy for the successful opening, but man, I can't wait for the hype to go down. Not sure how much I'll be able to make it since their hours (9 to 4:30) mean weekends only for me usually.

Yelp
first time here and the service was top tier! my server samy was so attentive and frequently checked on us. ambiance was dim with modern day hip hop music. food and drinks came out quick. everything we ordered was flavorful and nicely cooked. my favorite dish was the shrimp and their homemade green sauce. definitely coming back here!

Yelp
There are plenty of truly good bowls of Vietnamese soup in Portland, but Annam VL's Tuesday offerings aren't among them. We recently tried the Bun Moc (vermicelli noodles in a pork broth, with meats and fish balls) and the Mien Ga (glass noodles in chicken broth with shredded chicken), While each broth had a clean, mild taste, both tasted somewhat thin and watered down. The Bun Moc came with a small plate of chopped iceberg lettuce and bean sprouts but no basil or other herbs that might add some spice to the soup. There were also no condiments on the table, only a small dipping plates of chili pepper oil. I kept looking for something else to add to the soup to give it a deeper level of flavor. The tiny wedge of lime that came with the iceberg lettuce did help. Very fast service. Pleasant ambiance. We really wanted to like Annam VL more, particularly since for years we've been fans of Ha VL. Maybe on a different day at Annam VL we'll have a four- or five-star experience?

Yelp
Damn, it's GOOD. I got the Thursday bún moc,, never having had it, and totally enjoyed it. The place was totally packed for lunch with only two people I could see working, so service was a little slow, but they were definitely busting ass to get everything done. Can't wait to come back again!

Yelp
Straight out of Vietnam, Vietnamese food. Let me tell you how it went down. One early afternoon after church service, I stumbled upon this wonderful establishment with like 12 people deep. And they accommodated wonderfully. And then the waiter provided menus and because it was Sunday there were 2 items plus the beverages/appetizers. So, I was like well there are only 2 items, so I asked what is your favorite item for today and he said to order the Banh Canh Cha Tom. And he did not disappoint. It was an amazing soup dish where the noodles were soft and easy to chew. The protein balls were the highlight because it was warm throughout, pause. Sometimes when you get soups with protein, the soup can be super hot, but the meat is not fully heated. Whatever they did, it was thoroughly hot and yummy. Very flavorful. I want to come back and check out the other items on the menu. Each day is different, so make sure you try to come through on different days.

Yelp
A new local go to spot! The family that opened this spot is a hometown hero, the legends of HA VL and Rose VL. I was honored to be invited to their soft opening. The hu tieu broth was divine. Ambiance is very inviting and the service, as always, at all VL locations, is amazing!!!

Yelp
The wantons in the mì hoành thành have me believing there is a god. This will be a regular destination for sure!

Yelp
Another wonderful branch of the VL restaurants with some fun extras. The mungbean dumplings were AMAZING. They were sweet and savory with a perfect fishsauce flavor. The chicken curry soup was as fantastic as it is at Rose VL and Ha VL with its wonderfully savory curry flavor and big pieces of carrot, potato, and chicken that have soaked up all the yumminess. Different soups come with different accompaniments, which is always fun. This soup comes with a flavored salt that is really tasty. This is my favorite soup in Portland, hands down. The service was also wonderful and friendly! This location has a bit more of a modern ambiance, which is really comfortable and relaxing. I'm looking forward to many more meals here!!!

Yelp
I visited Annan VL on a Saturday for lunch. It was very busy and there was a 45 minute wait. I was surprised about that. My friend and I opted to wait. There's decent street parking in the area. I love that there's several different soups to chose from each day of the week. Since it was Saturday, there were two different beef soups to choose from and a pork soup. I got the mì hoành thánh which was the pork soup and my friend got a bowl of that as well. My friend and I also shared the bánh ít tràn which were rice dumplings. The service was friendly and our food was ready quickly. The rice dumplings were fantastic. They were so soft and flavorful. The sauce on top was sweet and vinegary. It worked well with the dumplings. The soup was fantastic. The broth was so good, the pork was delicious, there was lots of tasty wontons, the onions and cilantro were great, and I loved the noodles. I liked my experience as Annan VL and it was well worth the wait. I'll definitely come back and try more of their soups!

Yelp
Banh Mi Siu Mai and Dac Biet is scrumptious. Layers of flavor that from the pate, pickled veggies, meats and the bread is not overwhelming. Goi cuon / summer role ... the peanut sauce is what separates this dish from every restaurant. No complaints here, loving the depth of flavor of it that complements perfectly with rolls Hu Tieu My Tho ... this is my personal favorite Vietnamese dish growing up and my expectations are high. I can happily say this is the best Hu Tieu in Portland and I'm hoping my mom does not read this. Service and ambiance makes me feel like I'm right at the dinner table at home. I will be here at least once a week trying out all their dish.

Yelp
The pho here really hits the spot. It reminds me of the pho I had growing up in California. I love getting the Pho Annam because of the fresh wide noodles - they're super silky!

Yelp
I ordered the Banh Canh which was very well prepared. The server gave us a run through of their menu options which changes each day. The vibes of this place is very homey and welcoming. Would recommend and will come back!

Yelp
This block of Belmont is like a brick and mortar food cart pod--coffee, pizza, Mexican, bars and more, A couple months ago the Annam VL spot sold pretty good fish and chips. The world keeps flexing. Like the other two VLs (HA & Rose) Annam had 2 soups most days. The VLs have been key in helping Portlanders realize there's a lot more to Vietnamese noodle soups than pho. I like the more robust, mixed ingredients ones, but not an option today. The pork broth was rich and tasty. the noodles a smidge overcooked. Like the handmade (looking?) fish balls. Very friendly service. The cook herself came out and asked us how we like the soup.

Yelp
If you're in search of delicious home-cooked Vietnamese cuisine, look no further! Every dish we sampled was bursting with flavor; the Hu Tieu was particularly fitting for the autumn weather. Being a family-owned restaurant, the love and dedication poured into each creation is evident. The cozy atmosphere lends itself to an intimate dining experience, and the staff was exceptionally warm and attentive. It appears they will be featuring a unique 'chef's special' daily, and I eagerly anticipate exploring their upcoming dishes. I'll certainly be returning to savor more!

Yelp
Rotating dishes everyday on their menu. Today we had their signature pho which is the best tasting pho in town. Broth is clear with a deep and clean beefy flavor. Subtle sweetness with it which brings it all together nicely. Congratulations to the family for running their restaurants with great quality.

Yelp
I have been slurping this soup for 15 years at HaVL and when they stopped being open on Monday, and consequently, stopped serving this soup, I have been missing it. So, today, when I stopped into Annam, I can't tell you how happy I was to order it! Like, seeing an old friend. And, boy, was it delicious! Maybe even better than ever?! The shrimp cakes were tender, light, sweet, and tasted like the ocean. The tofu and tomatoes are always a favorite after they have absorbed the delicious broth. And, honestly, the service and charms of everyone working there made it even a more delightful experience. Tip: if you are handed a tiny bowl of shrimp paste to dip your tofu and cakes in, you better do so. Tasty!!

Yelp
Came by for the soft opening. We got the Hu Tieu My Tho and it was one of the most authentic and soul warming dishes I've had!

Yelp
Yep. It's good. I had a chicken noodle soup and drank it down to nothing. I'm jealous of Portland and these three VLs and Bun Bo Hue.

Yelp
We came here on Saturday morning right when they opened. We ordered the Pho and Mi Hoanh Thanh. Fun fact! They change their menu every day throughout the week. Tons of options for you to choose from and explore. The food was great and the service was above and beyond. The atmosphere was welcoming and warm. It is a family-owned restaurant and everything is homemade. Overall it was a pleasant experience.
