The 16 Best Restaurants On West LA's Sawtelle Boulevard - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"Tucked away behind a now-closed shabu shabu spot is Anzu, a tiny window with very good Japanese fried chicken. The golden brown, panko-crusted poultry comes hot off the fryer and in several styles, including over rice with a sriracha aioli or inside a burger with creamy tartar sauce. We prefer the karaage-curry combo that comes with sticky rice, a fried egg, and a big portion of savory Japanese curry to drizzle over your chicken." - brant cox, sylvio martins, arden shore, cathy park

The Baseline: Be open. This is more of an update as Anzu the official location is closed permanently. Silver lining is that the menu is available at Menya Tigre around the corner. I will review there separately. Food: Great Karaage chicken and fries. Service: No more service as it is closed. Atmosphere: A closed restaurant.

Google
This tastes EXACTLY like the Cajun chicken little from Cheesecake Factory and I am here for it. I got the curry and it was very good. The food comes out hot and fresh and has great overall flavor. The vibe is also cool cause it’s this little shake that plays cool music. There is also never a wait for this place which is weird but I’m not complaining. Good food but nothing mind blowing.

Google
A low-key, no nonsense shop serving up some of the best curry I've had in my life. So good that I ate here twice before leaving LA. Do yourself a favor and pick up their Karaage & Curry with a 5 piece to go. You won't regret it.

Google
Tasty fried chicken better known as karaage in Japanese. The crust is very flavorful with seasoning. I like the karaage burger best with the jalapeño ranch aioli. Fries are seasoned. What is really great is that there is ample parking in the lot next door, which is really key in the Sawtelle neighborhood.

Google
Japanese Karaage stand in Sawtelle. If you check in on Yelp, you can get an extra sauce. We tried the house sauce, aioli, and ranch - all were good, but the aioli was the favorite. We split the Karaage as a light dinner/heavy snack, as well as small fries. The chicken was crispy on the outside and moist in the inside. It came piping hot and we ate at the outside seating (indoor seating not available). They packaged the food in to-go containers and it seems to primarily operate as a takeout spot. Metered street parking available. Credit cards accepted.

Google
Karaage city! Great reputation well deserved. Tiny storefront perfect for takeout, but fried chicken is better fresh from the fryer. 🍋 I love to max out lemon and ponzu but that is my prefrenece. The creamy sauces are too much with fried foods IMHO. Curry is pretty good too, but the chicken... The chicken is why you drive all this way to the Westside! Service is prompt no fuss easy going.

Google
I've been meaning to try this chicken since late 2019 and I finally had an opportunity yesterday afternoon. The only reason I did is because the local Udon place was packed and I didn't feel like waiting or eating around too many people at the time. The chicken is great and has its own unique flavor compared to other karaage I've had in my lifetime. I love the location and how it's tucked away from all the other eateries in Sawtelle Japantown. The eating area is also nice and peaceful. I will definitely be back to try the burgers and dogs in the future. 🍛

Google
Great spot for a quick bite to eat for a lunch or dinner. Ordered the karaage bowl and everything was excellent about it, especially the karaage of course.

Yelp
Me and my friend both had chicken karaage bowls and it was pretty good! Not overdone with the sauce, which I liked. The presentation with the shoga (red ginger) and seaweed strips over the rice, was visually attractive.. Note that we parked in the lot behind the old location of the karaage place (now Daruma..btw, support the little Daruma location) But the actual place is around the corner about 5 spots down. Cute spot with an outdoor patio. Very nice staff is a plus

Yelp
One mention from my friend about fried chicken and I immediately started craving it. The first thing that came to mind for juicy chicken in the Sawtelle area was Anzu so I picked up a five piece karaage chicken. The ordering was very seamless. Service was very quick. There is a small outdoor space where you can stand or sit in high chairs to eat the chicken because you really shouldn't wait too long to eat it. One bite and you can tell how moist it was because the juices were running and was a little bit messy. I had the aïoli dipping sauce, which was delicious and sprinkle md lemon juice on top. Definitely hit the spot and would highly recommend, especially because they have a small, easy parking lot. Parking spaces can be tight though so be aware of that.

Yelp
Hard to find the restaurant as they moved from the original location to around the corner and they don't have the name as it appears on yelp. Once here the young host was super sweet and helpful as it was the Huz's first time eating ramen. A little pricy but honestly delish.

Yelp
Was looking for a place around Sawtelle and decided on this place because they had curry and karaage. Anzu is a little window restaurant where you order and eat out on a little patio area. I went with the Karaage Curry and really enjoyed it! Their homemade curry sauce was delicious and their Karaage chicken was good and a little juicy. I was worried it was going to be dry or overcooked but that wasn't the case. There are several restaurants in the area but this is one worth trying for their curry and Karaage!

Yelp
Anzu is a little hole-in-the-wall chicken spot on Sawtelle that has become my guilty pleasure. I usually go for the fried chicken meal or the chicken with curry, and both are so satisfying. The fried chicken is perfectly seasoned and comes with a delicious spicy mayo on the side, along with rice and a fresh Japanese-style salad with a tangy mustard vinaigrette that ties everything together. My husband always gets the curry option, which is full of rich flavor and comes with a fried egg, rice, and salad on the side. The sauces here are also really tasty and make great additions to any meal. While there are a few small benches out front, takeout is definitely the way to go. It's the perfect casual comfort food spot when you're craving something crispy and flavorful.

Yelp
Amazing fried chicken + curry spot in sawtelle! Anzu does some of the juiciest karaage I've had. The homemade curry was also sooo good, and went perfectly with the chicken and rice. I don't know what it was about the fried egg but it was also spectacular and maybe my favorite thing in the box. I don't know why I haven't been eating fried eggs more often with curry but it's an elite combination. The curry plate is a pretty big portion (comes with rice, a generous amount of chicken, egg, and a side salad) and worth the price! There was a huge line when we went around 8-8:30pm on a random Tuesday, so just be prepared for a wait if you go at a popular dinner time, especially on weekends. The service wasn't too slow though and the food came out quickly! They have very limited outdoor seating so you'll probably want to get takeout, but they package it well and the food stays hot for a while.

Yelp
I love getting the karaage rice here for lunch! It's a cute little window on La Grange, you can eat there or take it to go. I believe it's $13 and it's ~6 pieces of karaage with your choice of sauce on the side, rice, and a cabbage salad. I love the ponzu sauce here, it's not too citrusy, but has the perfect flavor and balance for the karaage. The portions are huge (in my opinion), I usually eat half for lunch and eat the other half for dinner... so personally, it's a total deal for me. The karaage chicken is so tender and flavorful, I've never eaten a dry piece of chicken from this place!!' Service is pretty quick, food is done within 5-10 minutes (depending on how busy they are). There is a parking lot behind Anzu that's free sometimes (usually during the day) and sometimes requires valet - best bet is to find street parking in my opinion though! Definitely recommend this spot! Would love to try other menu items also but just love the karaage rice here.

Yelp
Tried the karaage and it was definitely not Japanese style. Honestly just tasted like regular American fried chicken and not even a good particularly good one... The sauces didn't come with the chicken either and all the sauces we tried (aioli, ranch, ponzu) were very mid. There is only counter style outdoor seating.

Yelp
WHEN: Sun @6:30pm I was looking for a new spot to try for dinner and decided on this spot, knowing darn well it's going to be way too much food to handle...and I was right. It's a window off the Main Street to order, with a standing area with chairs to eat just outside. Small but it'll do. Here's what I got: KARAAGE BURGER - $8.50 Japanese Fried Chicken w/Tartar or Sriracha aioli. After placing my order I realized I never specified which sauce I wanted, and the gentleman who took my order told he was going to give me both--so nice! The sandwich was massive and the chicken was thick and crispy. Sadly I was only able to finish half. + $5.50 for FRENCH FRIES and ANY DRINK I knew I wanted to try the french fries, and saw that for just a buck more I can have a drink too, which I chose the can of GREEN TEA ($3). French fries were seasoned, warms, and crispy, but too much for myself and the hefty sandwich. I'm lucky I get 2 dipping sauces to enjoy it in! My meal was fresh, made to order, and was enjoyed in the outdoor counters. Feels kind of like a hidden gem tucked away off the Main Street in Sawtelle. I hope more people know about this yummy spot!

Yelp
Got takeout here again for lunch but this time I didn't eat it immediately after receiving it at the store. Instead drove it back only 10 min before eating and the sandwich was extremely soggy!! From the takeout container that traps all the heat causing a moist sandwich. I was so disappointed the fried chicken was no longer crispy, the sandwich tasted oily, and the sauce wasn't able to do it any justice

Yelp
Writing this review to echo my love for this place. I've eaten here so many times so I don't thin you can go wrong with it. Love the karaage curry rice plate You order at the window and you can eat outside (limited seating). Parking is easy since you can either park in the small lot or on the street (meters or residential)

Yelp
Anzu has delightfully tasty chicken. The place is just a small hole in the wall counter for ordering with about 8 stools to sit at for eating. The service was quick for the limited interaction that we had. Now the chicken was plenty flavorful with a solid breading that correctly clung to the chicken and a small piece of lemon, whose fruity acidity complimented the flavors very well. I had the Sriracha alioi. It tasted nice and creamy with a slight hint of spice. In the day of I thought the marinade didn't permeate the chicken enough (though you can still taste it). Having it the next day proved me wrong as the chicken amplified in flavor (though it did turn slightly soggy as one would expect). All in all a very delectable chicken experience and worth the time to get a few pieces of karaage if you're in the area.

Did my egg fall in the ground ? I was not pleased but still ate some of my meal as usual was starving

Yelp
PRO-TIP: Yelp check-in for a free side of sauce! It's a small order window but there is some limited outdoor seating. We got the: 1) Curry dog: -This is a keema curry hot dog with Japanese pickles on top. -This was my favorite part of our order surprisingly enough even though we're at a place known for their karaage. -Good sized hot dog, juicy with a nice serving of spiced keema curry on top. The Japanese pickles added a nice touch of sourness and textural crunch to the entire thing. 2) Karaage Burger Combo: -We upgraded this to a combo for an extra $4.99 for a side of fries and a canned drink. -The Japanese fried chicken is made from breast meat and you have the option of getting tartar or Sriracha aioli sauce. We got the sriracha aioli since we do love spicy and it is a bit spicier. -The karaage was crispy on the outside and moist on the inside. Breading wasn't too thick nor thin, but had those bits where it's just yummy crispy breading. The sriracha aioli wasn't spicy (a little bit of heat to it) but gave the burger a nice sauce to bring it all together. -Not a bad "fried chicken" sandwich. -The fries were decent and crispy too. Enjoyed dipping these in the extra side of sriracha aioli we got from checking in. Overall not a bad fast food stop to make in Sawtelle.

Yelp
Anzu is the side restaurant of Menya Tigre Curry around the corner on Sawtelle proper. It has a very limited menu ,but they do sell Sandos - burgers. I tried the teriyaki avocado burger. I placed on line order from Yelp page seamlessly. When I received it , there was NO avocado? Fortunately, I was across the street & I checked. I went back & they put some more on, but not liberally....the patty was sizeable, the teriyaki sauce was very good, guessing homemade (it's not difficult to make) Oh yeah I got , just average . I believe if they didn't f___ up the avo & were more personable, I would have gone 4stars. My new innovation is to bring my homemade teriyaki sauce - add it on top of a Big Tomy Avocado burger....but I shouldn't do that?

Yelp
I've had this place on my list of restaurants to try for awhile now and finally had the opportunity to give it a try. I ordered through the Yelp app which was a breeze and picked up my order 20 minutes later easy-peasy. I ordered the Karaage curry plate and the staff was quick and courteous and my order was packed and ready to go. The place itself is cute with the window where you order and some outdoor picnic style benches if you want to eat there but I had a date with my dog and TV. Got home (just a couple blocks away) and opened up my soon to be dinner and was a bit disappointed. Everything was there but my egg had fully cooked itself, perhaps my walk was too long, but the karaage looked a bit overcooked as well. FIrst bite of the karaage not great if I'm being honest a bit soggy and over cooked. Once I poured the curry over the chicken and rice it definitely improved the flavor of the chicken. The rice was quite tasty though and the egg really paired well with the curry which is why I'm going 4/5 stars despite my disappointment with karaage. To be honest I'm a big fan of karaage (Japanese fried chicken) if this was my first time trying it I may have been more impressed but the reality is you can get much better karaage a few blocks down the street.

Yelp
(first off - leaving a bad review because you showed up 10min to close and expected to be served is insane behavior. Some of you yelp people need to see a professional.) This place rules. Stop messing around and just sit down at the place for a half hour and eat. I've had literal dreams about the karaage chicken and the curry.
google avatar

Priscilla V.

Yelp
Tucked in a quieter corner of Sawtelle, this spot serves up a decent karaage burger - simple and fulfilling without any standout elements. I ordered the karaage burger and felt that it was good but not exceptional. My friend had ordered the keema curry on rice also felt that it was average. The service was good and there is also a parking lot. If you're after a straightforward karaage burger without frills, this place fits the bill.

Yelp
Had never been to Anzu before so went there for lunch today. Anzu is owned by the same people who own Menya Tigre around the corner on Sawtelle. Have been to Menya Tigre many times. Had the Karaage Chicken Burger. The Karaage chicken was very good. Thought the bun was too much like Wonder Bread and was too soft. Would have preferred a bun that was a little more chewy. As others have mentioned, there is rather limited seating outside. From what I saw while I was there, all orders come packed to go. While I was there, most of the orders went. I sat on one of the tall metal stools and ate my Karaage Chicken Burger.
google avatar

Yelp
Great selection of menu items . I ordered the 20 piece . This was so delicious. It tasted fresh was served hot with a variety of dipping sauces . The staff was very friendly and helpful and the service was quick. A lot of choice here on Sawtelle but I will definitely come back.
google avatar

Yelp
Really good karaage chicken & curry. Sure ha aioli was really good. Small outdoor seating. Better parking options. Parking lot and street.
google avatar

Judy G.

Yelp
Our first post-hike meal, we shared the Kaarage & Curry (signature karaage with home made Curry sauce over rice, fried egg, mini salad.) This place only have outdoor seating and no public restroom. I got the free sauce with the Yelp Check in. The wait for a food took a while but it was the richest curry flavor I've ever tasted and the kaarage the right amount of crunch!
google avatar

Yelp
I adoreeeeee this place with my whole heart. Some of the best chicken I've had period! Need to make my way back over here soon, I love Sawtelle and discovering new places
google avatar

Yelp
Really hidden location in Sawtelle! My friends and I always drive past it, but we actually found this on Yelp and decided to try it just because of the prices! I paid $15 total, $8.50 for the burger + $5.80 to make it a combo with fries and a drink. This was super affordable considering how filling it was! Definitely a cheaper eat in Sawtelle! The chicken was juicy and flavorful, def would come back again for a cheap eat!
google avatar

Gustavo M.

Yelp
Best fried chicken in LA. The 5 or 10-piece meals have bigger and juicier pieces. Really delicious! 5 pieces for less than $10. Best deal in town. Highly recommend!
google avatar

Emma S.

Yelp
Recently tried this place off a recommendation - let me just say, this is the best fried chicken I've had in LA yet. Just the right amount of crispy but soft on the inside. Also loved all the extra side dishes it came with. Highly recommend!
google avatar

Isabel B.

Yelp
Super bomb, authentic Japanese Karaage chicken. Not really a restaurant, more for convenient take out but there is outside seating. Food is amazing and can't wait to get a chance to try out the menu. Service is quick but kitchen looks small so it can get busy fast.
google avatar

Fabian L.

Yelp
I ordered 2 karaage burgers, 1 with the siracha aioli and the other with the jalapeño ranch. I love things on the spicy side so while they were both delicious I preferred the jalapeño ranch sauce. In addition, I ordered a side of fries that were tasty. It's a great place to grab a bite and look forward to trying the different menu options.

Kaisei S.

Yelp
WOW. KARAAGE IS SO GOOD. I was born and raised in Tokyo and moved to LA back in 2016. And I gotta say, Anzu has some GOD-TIER karaage - I always come here when I'm missing home.
google avatar

Jake A.

Yelp
Very reliable place on the corner with a nice little parking lot next to it, you just order through the window and they have a small but again very reliable menu to choose from. The Karaage chicken was tasty and I love the sauce!
google avatar

Alyssa M.

Yelp
Yummy! Dropped by here right when they opened around 530pm. The place is right down the street from a busy intersection, and it's just a window with about ten covered spots to sit outside. We ordered the karaage rice and karaage burger. The chicken was super hot when it came out. The karaage rice came with coleslaw on the side so I ate that while waiting for the chicken to cool off. The chicken had the most balanced amount of breading so I didn't feel overly full. The rice was a great texture as well. As for the price, it was very reasonable. The karaage rice was about $14. I'd definitely come back to get the karaage rice again. Super good experience!
google avatar

Lisa T.

Yelp
The chicken was piping hot when it came out. I tried the karage rice and it was yummy. I was hoping it'd be more crispy, but it still tasted good. Check in to get a free extra dipping sauce!
google avatar

Stephanie L.

Yelp
Pulled up for lunch today. Waited not even 5 minutes for my food. The karaage curry combo was $14.99 with a salad. The nice man at the counter offered a cup of water when he realized I was there. The curry was rich with a hint of spice. The chicken pieces were juicy. The cabbage salad with ginger carrot dressing acted as a palate cleanser between bites. There's a parking lot right by the storefront and some metered street parking nearby.

Yelp
We got delivery from this place and the food came quickly. My daughter ordered the Avo Teriyaki burger and the Loco Moco. I indeed the Karrage chicken sandwich with 7 dollar fries. The fries are good and I would order those again. The chicken sandwich however, tasted like a sandwich you can get at a Wendy's or Chick fil a. It was also dry and unseasoned. I will not get that mistake again. My daughterLoco Moco was pretty tasty but I don't see myself ordering again from them.
google avatar

Tim M.

Yelp
Food was great and the ambiance was surprisingly fun too! Had a playlist of 90's rap that had me jamming while I enjoyed my chicken sandwich.
google avatar

Diana N.

Yelp
Karaage chicken burger was super dry/tasteless and the bun too sweet tasting. Sriracha aioli made it loads better and The fries were delicious though! Nicely seasoned and fried to crunchy perfection. I would not go out of my way to try this place again though.. it was a fast convenient option but for over $10 for fries can of soda and the burger, I would rather go to in n out...
google avatar

Hannah L.

Yelp
MMMMMMmmmm this place is a hole in the wall - I wouldn't have found it if we weren't actively looking for it since it's around the corner and small. A bit on the pricier side but worth it if you're looking for a small snaccc consisting of PIPIN'T HOT, juicy, crunchy, lean pieces of karaage. So and I were impressed. Sriracha Aioli was nothin' special tho. Wish we could add heat levels to the food. SERVICE: one man running the show 30 min before closing on a Tuesday night but he works pretty quick!
google avatar

Yelp
I ain't chicken around when I say Anzu is one of the best spots on Sawtelle. This is a small take out window tucked on the side away from the main road. Though it's storefront may not seem like much, their chicken really packs a punch! Anzu specializes in Japanese fried chicken called Karaage. I get their 5 or 10 piece chicken combo, which comes with fries and a drink and a sauce of your choice on the side. The sriracha aioli is some of the creamiest best spicy Mayo I've ever had--not too spicy for those who can't handle spice. The chicken is super tender and juicy, and individually these are huge pieces. The 10-piece combo is honestly good enough to split with a friend. Only tip is that because chicken is fried to order, your order may take at least 15 minutes to be ready. They do have a website to order ahead of time, which I use a lot. Don't be chicken, give Anzu a try!
google avatar

Yu C.

Yelp
Little hole-in-the-wall place on a side street in Sawtelle, but the food is incredible especially for its price. Tasty chicken karaage, solid curry, nice fried egg and salad. Minimal selection in its menu, but if you're looking for chicken karaage (and its variants), you're at the right place. The place only offers a few outdoor seats, so it's mostly a takeout place.
google avatar

Chris K.

Yelp
Such delicious, juicy chicken. My daughter and I loved it. Light coating packs a big crunch and the sauces were great.
google avatar

Amanda R.

Yelp
Super simple stand in sawtelle with delicious chicken karaage. It was very juicy and crunchy. The rice was nice and warm but the salad was really just a bunch of cabbage and a few pieces of tomato and corn. They were relatively quick and not crazy busy. I recommend this for takeaway, not so much to eat there since there's not much of an ambience. Overall, would recommend to people for a super casual take out spot.
google avatar

Ellen G.

Yelp
Juicy, piping hot, and huge chunks of karaage. Anzu is a window on Sawtelle that specializes in karaage and definitely worth a try. The chicken is well marinated with a savory crust that is not too thick. When I say juicy, I mean juicy. Definitely have some napkins on hand. It is on the salty side and doesn't really need the dipping sauce, but the ponzu gave a nice refreshing zing! If you're stopping by any of the numerous restaurants in sawtelle, be sure to save some stomach room for some karage.
google avatar

Nick D.

Yelp
Just drove 30 min to get this and they are closed 10 min early. Either charge your hours or hire people willing to actually run your business on your posted hours. What a joke
google avatar

John C.

Yelp
We recently discovered this place. My 10 year old daughter loves the Karage. I had the Sicilian Rice, which was very good. One modification I'll make next time I order it is to pass on the lettuce. It gets wilted from the heat of the meat and rice. They add corn to many of the dishes, so if you don't prefer it then let them know when you place your order.
google avatar

Karen T.

Yelp
Great chicken karaage. Good for meals or for an add-on as a snack/appetizer. The chicken is nicely fried yet still moist on the inside. The curry here is pretty good as well. It's mostly a takeout spot. There are some seating but it's very limited and all outdoors. There is a parking lot right next to it that is free during the day time. Pretty busy so consider ordering ahead.
google avatar

Joanne S.

Yelp
Piping hot chicken karage coming your way! It's located in an assuming plaza with a small parking lot next to it. I got the 5 pc combo which comes with one sauce, battered fries, and a drink. The ponzu sauce was good, but next time I'll try the siracha aioli! You pick up your chicken in this tiny walk up window. They only have a small outdoor patio area that you can stand and eat you food.
