Ask the Experts: Where to Dine in Vancouver

"Au Comptoir, opened by French expats Maxime Bettili and Julien Aubin, is an ode to traditional Parisian cafés. The bar counter, designed by Ateliers-Nectoux, serves as a focal point. Lunch plates include croque du jour and veal tartare, while dinner features carrot gnocchi à la Parisienne and four-spiced duck breast." - Abbe Baker

We came to Au Comptoir for weekend brunch and were pleasantly surprised by how good it was! The food might look simple at first glance, but the flavors were amazing. I had the burger, which was incredibly juicy and perfectly complemented by sautéed onions and melted cheese. The fries were piping hot and super crispy, and the side salad was fresh with delicious seasoning. Service was also top-notch—friendly, attentive, and they kept our water refilled without us even asking. A lovely French spot we’ll definitely return to!

I love this place for its casual atmosphere and superb French food. On Friday nights and Saturdays I recommend reservations. During the week drop in as possible. All of the steaks, especially the bavette, are excellent. All of the wait staff is French but surprisingly polite. The bartenders are great and serve great cocktails with Flare.

My first time dining here, and it was an amazing experience! The food was delicious, with generous portions at an affordable price. The staff was incredibly kind and took the time to explain the menu thoroughly. The cocktails were superb, making the experience even better. I’ll definitely be back~

The duck breast was absolutely delicious—the outside was perfectly crispy, while the inside remained tender and juicy. The sauce complemented the richness of the dish beautifully, balancing the flavors without being too heavy. The foie gras and side dishes were a perfect match, enhancing the overall taste experience. The service was warm and welcoming, and the restaurant’s décor felt both cozy and traditional, creating a wonderful dining atmosphere.

Google
Love this place! If you're missing France, and want to enjoy the atmosphere of a friendly and noisy French bistro, Au Comptoir is the place. Extraordinarily tasty food - the chefs are worth their weight in gold here. We've been here twice, once for brunch and once for dinner. You can't make lunch reservations, so get there early if you don't want to wait. They want to make sure the food arrives hot and timely, so they coordinate with the kitchen and won't seat you until the kitchen can handle the orders. The wait is worth it though. Delectable food done only the way the French can. For brunch they were yelling our orders across the counter (comptoir) to the person managing the coffee bar. He then informed the kitchen. When we showed up for dinner for our anniversary, the waiters pick up pretty quickly if you want to try speaking to them in French. They're game and adjust their French to your level. My husband is fluent, my French is okay. Made the whole experience super fun. Highly recommend this place. Dinner is expensive, but portions are good and the quality is well worth the price. Ambience is warm and lovely, with converted Singer sewing machines creating bases for many of the tables.

Google
Excellent dining experience. Their servers actually speak French. Food is chef kiss, service is friendly, vibes are cozy. Love this place.

Google
In my opinion, the best French/Belgian restaurant in Vancouver. It has a true Parisian bistrot vibe, food is excellent and the staff is extremely welcoming! They speak French if you need some practice too! There are no reservations so feel free to pop in for a walk-in table or place your name in the waiting list.

Google
Excellent dining experience! Dropped in at 3 PM for a late lunch. Lovely window table. Enjoyed their version of a Caesar salad - it was delicious! Beef Tartare was excellent. Highly recommend for anyone looking for fine French dining in Vancouver.

Yelp
It's one of my favourite French restaurant in Vancouver for a long time but it's always hard to get a table because of the long line ups. I am happy that they finally have online reservations to make it easier for customers. We started with the Foie Gras as appetizer, which is duck foie gras and turkey terrine with sourdough bread. For entrees, my partner got Saumon a L'unilaterale which is panseared salmon with tagliatelle, gem lettce, and fish veloute. I got the Magret de Canard which is my favourite French food. The cardamom glazed duck breast is rich and tender, balanced well with celeriac, apple, Swiss chard, buckwheat, and duck jus.

Yelp
The best part of the meal were the pomme dauphine balls on the steak dish. Super good! Everything else was just okay. We were most excited for the choucroute dish with a mix of meats but the presentation looked blah and it tasted blah too. But overall, a cute vibe and a nice romantic spot.

Yelp
My husband and I had a lovely brunch here with a friend last Sunday. We arrived early enough so we didn't have to wait for a table. I had looked up the menu and was all set to have the poitrine de porc et lentilles. I always love a good piece of pork belly. However, having looked at the menu one more time just before the waiter came to take our orders, I changed my mind and ordered the assiette au comptoir instead. I had just had a cassoulet the week prior and the duck fat potato rösti in the house dish looked really tempting. I'm glad I changed my mind. The potato rösti was sinfully good. It was crispy throughout on the outside and and inside just melted in my mouth with every bit of rich duck fat flavour. I savoured every single bite. We all had cafés allongées to round out our brunch. The coffees were rich and strong and served in lovely Cafés Richard cups and saucers. I will have to go back for the poitrine de porc.

Yelp
We were looking for a good and authentic French restaurant in Vancouver for an anniversary. Many places around are usually French fusion and we wanted to have just the whole experience. Other reviews have said that service was curt and moody, but when we went, our waiter was great! He was super attentive (but not overbearing), glasses got filled up constantly, and plates were cleared promptly. We went quite early so restaurant was just filled with a couple other tables and noise level wasn't too loud. We ordered 2 appetizers - the scallops ($22) and tartare de wagyu ($21). Scallops were nice and fresh and each bite was slightly tart due to the lemon. Serrano ham added a nice crunch. Super impressed with this dish. Actually really thought that the sardines balanced with the scallops. Tartar was pretty typical and tasty. The bread that it came with was soft and fluffy which I loved. For mains, we ordered the duck breast ($42) and ribeye with fries ($42). Duck was my favourite! Duck wasn't cooked to absolute perfection but was tender enough. Loved the plum sauce as well, pretty similar to hk-style roast but it was a less thick sauce overall. Unfortunately I didn't really enjoy the ribeye - both the steak and fries were quite salty in my opinion (probably from the peppercorn sauce). Salad was on the overly sour-side from the dressing. Just a lot going on for the taste buds but nothing really stood out. I actually really liked all their appetizers. Definitely on the pricier side but I had a great time and would consider for another special occasion.

Yelp
Stopped in here to get out of the heat during the Khatsahlano street party. I didn't get any food, so I can't comment on that. I can comment that the drinks and service are impeccable though! The food did look and smell good though! Sat at the bar and ordered a few drinks. I asked them for a drink they don't normally make, they listened to how I like it and made it perfectly. Good banter with the staff while sitting there. Overall, standup place with a great staff. I'll come back to try the food next time!

Yelp
My steak was tender and delicious. Nice service! I like the atmosphere. Highly recommend it.

Yelp
Atmosphere - 10/10. It wasn't too loud even though they were completely full when we got there. My friend and I just wanted dessert and sat at the bar. It was fun because the hostess and server and bartender all greeted us in French with real convincing authentic French accents as well. We even found out our bartender/server was from Paris! It really felt like stepping into a cute little dinner & dessert spot somewhere in France. Onto the desserts. My friend selected the tarte citron which is a tantalizing looking lemon curd, Italian meringue and lemon gel (the drops on the side). The presentation -- obviously freakin beautiful just look at that photo! I'm not even a food photographer but it is just a photogenic dessert. The show stopping Victoria Secret model of desserts. The flavour is very tart and lemony as one would expect. I love lemon curd however I was hoping the meringue would softening the tartness a little, however the meringue didn't seem to add any additional layers of flavour, and tasted like nearly nothing. Maybe simply added there as the fashion statement with the little leaf? The lemon gel tasted like a watered down version of the curd. Crust wise - really nice. It was not soggy and was not too hard it was the perfect consistency texture with a mild flavour. The second dessert was the grain de café. Honestly, kind of looks like the hot girl's best friend who is not photogenic but she tries to dress cute like a coffee bean but turns out looking a bit like a turd. For this reason she is easily overlooked. No one expects much of her. No one thinks they want her, much less could love her... That is until you get to know her for what's on the inside. It's her personality. Her taste. Her flavour. Her texture. Her complexity. She's not here to try hard to look good because she actually literally has it all. The triple threat combo of the coffee ganache with the cacao nib and hazelnut praliné, and the chocolate sponge cake is absolutely worth stepping in front of a moving bus for. She is everything. She is the whole entire package. One small taste and you gotta get to know her more. She's modestly packaged in a thin shell of chocolate leaving minimal expectations if you were to judge this book by its cover. With each bite you fall deeper, harder, faster. Intoxicated with love. Just filled with pure bliss. And a desire for more. Meeting the grain de café is a spiritually transcendent experience that is 110% worth the sweet goodbye and thank you as you finish your last bite - already excited and in anticipation for the next time you cross paths. The ice cream she came with was meh.

Yelp
A disappointing meal, considering we had heard good things from a friend. The service was barely passable, there were only a few dishes that didn't have meat, and the delicacy of the sablefish special was destroyed by the unpleasant fish volute and clams it was paired with. A shame since the fish was cooked beautiful with crispy skin but was a fillet slightly larger than my thumb and served with just two small carrots for $42. I did enjoy the truffle mushroom risotto, the only veg offering on the menu, (though I'm now nervous there could have been animal stock in it. Needless to say we skipped dessert, and though we were tempted by the idea of mussels and frites night, we won't be going back.

Yelp
Literally one of my favourite French bistro in town. We came here to celebrate one summer afternoon. I love to start off my meal with good baguette and butter with fine red wine. We had this scrumptious duck dish. The skin was crispy and the meat tender. We couldn't stop talking about it. We also had the seared sea scallops which was cooked to perfection. I wish we could make reservation as I would be here way more frequently but it is a first come first serve basis establishment. It is worth the wait? Definitely especially if you are here for dinner.
google avatar

Yelp
Wonderful French food! It's not super veggie friendly but they do have cheese plates, risotto, salads and soup. Last time I had the risotto, with the daily soup, next time I'll just have cheese and soup. My friends had the Wellington and fois gras. They said it was great. They have a good selection on their wine list. The service is very good and it feels like a proper French bistro. They don't take reservations and your whole table has to be there before they will seat you. I highly recommend this little gem!

Yelp
Rich cuisine ( as it should be ) along with St Germain stylings and people with French accents. I love it here.

Yelp
Came here for lunch on a Thursday to try. They open at 1130a and the tables fill up quickly Very attentive waiters who actually are French. Had Croque Madame. Nice and savory. Wonderful fries and nice salad sides. Not too expensive. House coffee is quite good. Nice atmosphere. Street meter parking or paid lots around the corner on Yew between 4th and 5th

Yelp
Our first DINNER here. My goodness did we enjoy ourselves. Warm, not loud -- fancy without being fussy. FRENCH. (Unapologetically French!). Thank you Charles for the great service. We sat at the bar. We lingered without pressure.

Yelp
Est-ce que tu parles français? I don't speak French, but I do know that French cuisine is delicious. We had Le Brunch at Au Comptoir and were seated beside the open window at a table that had an antique Singer treadle foot pedal. I started off with a cappuccino and a cute bite size cookie. My main was a FLÉTAN SUR BRIOCHE translated means Halibut on Brioche. Looks like an eggs Benedict. It was quite busy and the wait listed customers outside kept staring at us which made our stay short. On the table: FLÉTAN SUR BRIOCHE 20 confit halibut, ratatouille, brioche, poached eggs, basil hollandaise sauce, fries, salad BAVETTE D'ALOYAU, FRITES 26 grilled beef bavette steak, roquefort sauce, fries, salad BLOODY CAESAR AU COMPTOIR 9vodka, house-made caesar mix

Yelp
Popped in for a quick lunch. Corn soup was ok could have done with some acid. The croque monsieur came after a long wait. I've never had a croque Monsieur that was made with just one slice of bread before, it has always come as a sandwich. It was dry and more like a slice of pizza which I didn't like. The fries were way too over cooked with the result of being way too crunchy. The salad was just bagged lettuce with a bit of dressing. All in all I wouldn't run back.
google avatar

Andrew L.

Yelp
The authentic French experience in that you will hear French slung across the restaurant. An elegantly decorated space with a menu to match. I had the aislette du comptoir which was fresh and tasty. The sausage was unique and the eggs were baked to perfection. The little biscuit that came with the Americano was also a nice touch. Definitely a quaint little spot for brunch or coffee.

Yelp
For our anniversary, we thought of giving this french restaurant a try. I have been hearing about this place for some time now, but when the pandemic hit, i had no chance to give it a go. But now tha things have opened up a bit....Lets do it!!! The place itself does look at your typical french cafe/restaurant in paris. From the ambiance, furniture, cutlery, to the servers...you get that feeling of dining at an authentic french bistro. The food was excellent! Very impressive and full of vibrance and colour. We started with the special of the day appy..pork and chicken liver pate. wow! Full of flavour and such a generous serving too. Plit came with 2 toasted crustinis for that crunch and balance of textures. The pate itself was smooth and freshly made. For mains, we had the duck and the lamb sirloin. Both were equally amazing. Presentation was spot on, and the flavours and execution superior in every way. The duck was tender and juicy. The best part was the skin. It was cracklin and crispy....and complimented the tender meat. Aside from duck confit, ive never had duck served like this. Reminds me of chinese roasted pork cooking method where they dry out the skin and torch it leaving you that crunch. So good!! The lamb sirloin equally amazing. Meat was so succulent , juicy, and tender, which tells me there is a true french master chef at the helm. Perfect execution and seasoning as well. No after taste or lamb smell at all. Just robust flavours to entice the taste buds. For dessert, we had the chocolate lava cake. It was a cook to order dessert, and they did it flawlessly. Unlike other places where the chocolate in the center has either dried out or lacking in chocolate, this one was oozing with dark chocolatey goodness. The cake itself was plump and held the lava together. Complimented by creme brulee ice cream and some brown sugar. Perfect ending to a wonderful meal! Service was prompt and efficient. I would definitely be back to try the other entrees. Another not so hidden gem in kits! Cheers! Happy eating!!!

Yelp
I guess I am who I am LOL... I went to a French restaurant and ordered a burger. The foie gras on top eased my culinary conscience, though. Delicious! The service was great and the French waiters delivered authentic French service, very nice. They even served French gin (Citadelle) in my martini! Great experience, highly recommended.
google avatar

Yelp
Trendy, quaint French spot in Kits on 4th. Headed there for Brunch. Great vibes, big open front windows to bring the sound of city in as the cutlery clanks. For appetizers, the duck wings were exceptional - perfect size and spices. Each detail is quite nice, even the bitesize pastry that comes with the Americano was delicious. The main course was the burger. It was heavy and dense. Big, big cut of beef that is quite pink throughout. Heavy cream sauce with rich cheese on top makes it a decadent meal. Salad and fries don't add much to the star of the dish. A little one note, could've used an additional ingredient to balance it out. The service was authentic, attentive, respectful, and fun. Overall, a great experience with above average food very authentic to the cuisine in a great area.

Yelp
Wow, what words to describe... if you're looking for a true Parisian atmosphere. This would be the place. The cafe interior itself is very well designed. If you're lucky, you can sit by the open window, enjoying a bottle of wine with the feel of being outside. The dishes deserve 5 star. They were carefully put together and the ingredients are superb. We were visiting Vancouver for the weekend and after reading reviews, we made sure to visit the restaurant as our only dinner out. Do show up early in order to get seated in a reasonable time, and don't come starving as you will wait a bit. Overall, highly recommend!

Yelp

Yelp
Here is what I got: - GAUFRE MADAME: House-made buckwheat waffle, parisian ham, onion mornay, poached eggs. - RIS DE VEAU: Roasted veal sweetbreads, winter squash, parsnip, mushrooms, poached eggs. - FONDANT AU CHOCOLAT: Dark chocolate molten cake served with house-made liquorice orange ice cream. - GATEAU BASQUE: Warm vanilla and almond pastry cream pie served with espelette black cherry sorbet. Located in vibrant Kitsilano neighborhood, Au Comptoir is a cozy yet charming cafe serving French classic. They offer breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner, a bar and outdoor seatings. Au Comptoir has been one of my favorite French restaurants for years. Our first dish was the Gaufre Madam, every bite melts in your mouth. The onion mornay blended well with the waffle and was so delicious. Our second dish was the Ris De Veau. The veal itself was crispy on the outside and soft in the inside. Alll the ingredients were fresh, and cook to perfection. Last but not least, the desserts! I love both of the desserts, they were not overly sweet. My favorite was their Fondant au Chocolat, since they use dark chocolate, they are not sweet yet they are rich, but not too rich. It is served with homemade ice cream and caramel, so it balance out the bitterness. The Gateau Basque was also good, the pastry was crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. The black cherry sorbet was so fresh and add fruity flavor to the pastry. Every ingredients in each dishes were perfectly balanced out, and thoughtfully presented. Overall, I love Au Comptoir for their splendid ingedients quality, taste and service. Recommended!

Yelp
Great lunch place, has been on my list for some time now. I'm glad I was able to check it off my list. Located in Kits. I was meeting a girlfriend for lunch. Super cute, you're automatically transformed to some Parisian cafe. I started with a hot chocolate, so good! I had the burger and fries/salad. My friend had the croque monsieur. The food was good. Service was great. I look forward to coming back and trying the dinner menu.

Yelp
What's the use of writing a review? Their chefs must be from French Laundry in Napa Valley or Noma in Copenhagen. (If you must know, these are among Michelin Star high performers). Top top top.... Everything is top quality!

dianne K.

Yelp
I come here for two things: the machons de canard frits and the foie gras. Both are succulent, worth a special trip. Also used to like the ris de veau, no longer disponible. Always busy, a bit noisy, one waiter has the classic Gallic cliched snobbery, the others no.
google avatar

Yelp
Came here for brunch and food was quite good especially the duck confit was amazing. Service? Hmm meh. It was very mid les faux bourgeois had a better service and was one of the loveliest. Not so much here. Dont expect a good service from a french restaurant and if you think their service is bad please avoid from giving a tip. Anyway, ask for the brioche but they gave a whole meal of salmon brioche instead. Asked whether this is right, but the answer was yes. Nothing but rude customer service. I have no comment on this. Instead of taking the mistakes, we have to suck it up? Lol anyway i have no more comment on this. I hope you fix the service. Although the food was good, if your service is bad, well youd definitely have to face some problems in the future.

Jenson B.

Yelp
Tried it again last week (friends birthday) and 3 out of 7 of us got food poisoning, the only thing we had in common was eating at this place. Even if we didn't get sick, the quality is not worth the price they charge. Rather go elsewhere in this city.
google avatar

Barry W.

Yelp
One line review: Supposedly higher end French cuisine, but our experience was so-so Our party went for lunch. We came because we heard about the burger; we should have listened. We ordered: - Burger with fries (We heard this was good, and it was decent, though not as remarkable as we had heard.) - Flank steak (This was inedible -- tough, not well-seasoned, and worse than anything I've had at a diner.) - Duck confit (This was good -- crispy skin, tender meat -- if a bit pricey for what you get.) On the whole, I think we could have had a slightly expensive but enjoyable lunch had we just ordered burgers. Or we could have had a nicer lunch at a higher price. But the steak was terrible and never should have been served. Service was fine but not memorable. Parking was on the street. Bottom line: Not sorry to have tried it, but there are better options at this price point.

Yelp
A one night of splurge with the hubby for sure! It's a small but cozy French restaurant by Kitsilano area. We got there super early around 530pm on a Sunday night, and did not have to wait at all. The waiter sat us down at a table by the window, small but romantic. We ordered two appetizers to share, one is the chef special Pâté, made of duck and pork, and the other is the Foie Gras. To be honest, the Pâté wasn't our favorite. It was a little too gamey for our taste, and the paste was a little heavy. However, we did enjoy the Foie Gras, especially the fresh made brioche that came with. As recommended, we had the Sunday special Veal to share. How can I describe, it was PERFECT! It came with veal and the bone, plated with some dehydrated kale, and roasted small carrots. The portion was quite big, it was enough for two to share. The meat was tender and cooked just about right . The gamey taste was barely noticeable, and it was perfect match with the kale and carrots. We finished the meal with a dessert called fondant au chocolate, it looks like lava cake with chocolate syrup inside. It was perfect with vanilla ice cream. All the servers are very professional and knowledgeable. We had quite a bit of questions, from wine pairing to the details of each dish, they were very patient. For a very reputable French restaurant, their price point isn't expensive at all. Our overall experience were very good. I'd recommend it to everyone who's interested in French cuisine.

Yelp
Au Comptoir, Vancouver Price: $ 25 - $35 pp for lunch (excluding ) || $40 - $60 pp for dinner (excluding ) Taste: 4.5 / 5 Atmosphere: 4.5 Seating: 4 Price Performance ratio: 4.8 / 5 Retention Rate: 100% ℙros: excellent service carries a lot of classic French dishes the confit duck leg was seared to perfection using real cooking techniques and not sous vide. the lamb meat was fall off the bone tender has amazing desserts I love the custard from the mille feuille. It has a strong vanilla fragrance The lemon tart has the perfect balance of tangy and sweet. The crust resembles a shortbread cookie. It's buttery and it crumbles with a bite (not the flaky kind) Cons: the braised lamb was really gamey which I'm okay with. I think it would be too much for the general crowd Final thoughts: love everything about this place. Especially the Mille Feuille they only carry the Mille Feuille on Fridays can't comment on the merguine. I scraped it off from the lemon tart (I don't like merguine in general cause it's usually too sweet) Full review on my blog

Yelp
Food was excellent. Service was pretty good (minus when they poured some of our bottled sparkling water into our tap water glasses). It had been a while since I had a meal at au Comptoir. Previous visits were during lunch and I remembered the food as being very good. We ordered the foie gras to start. The Apple jelly and pickled apple (that looked like a relish) was a nice touch to the appetizer. My only suggestion would to have an extra piece or two of the brioche toast. The duck breast was probably one of the best duck breast dishes I have had in a while. So many places do not know how to properly sear the skin where it's perfectly crispy yet the meat is still tender. I totally enjoyed that dish. I would get that dish again. I think this dish was better prepared then my visits to le crocodile (and that's one of my top restaurants in the city!) The grilled rib eye was so tender and juicy. The frites were cooked well. I didn't have any complaints with that dish. I'd rather spend $38 on this piece of steak versus going to the keg. Finished off the meal by sharing the lemon meringue tart. The filling was good but I was disappointed by the tart shell. It clearly tasted like it had been sitting in the cooler for some time because a great, fresh tart shell would be hard/crisp when you fork into it. It was a bit soft in texture and therefore this dessert was not a winner. Overall I had a great visit. It was pretty busy for a Wednesday evening but luckily we had no issues with walking in. If only they took reservations, I would likely be a regular customer! Maybe that's a good thing otherwise I would have a hard time fitting through their doors lol. I look forward to coming back!

Yelp
Voila! Tres magnifique! OMG what a delightful restaurant indeed. Passed by hundreds of times, always full, always curious & today on a fluke popped in & super impressed! Au Comptoir is a small but classy French restaurant that manages to transport one into France, via music, decor & superb French waiters! Multiple award winning restaurant & well deserved! Bravo!!! I have not had magnificent coffee like the coffee served here - in so long!!! Very impressed - taste was smooth, tasty & loving! For brunch we had - Confit de Carnard en Salade & la Burger Maison, Frites. Ok the duck - supreme & the burger - unbelievable!!! Our plates had me going - Oui, Oui & Oui!!! Heavenly taste of paradise! Merci - je t'aime beaucoup!

Yelp
We had the entrecote with frites, fois gras, tarte citron, and parfait glacé. Everything was great, and the service was good. It is a bit noisy, but everything is so good, that we didn't notice the noise, after about five minutes.

Yelp
Love the brunch here. The food, the coffee, the sweets, they are all good. The staff speaks french. While, I don't mind if they weren't Francophone or even if they spoke Chinese for that matter, it certainly does add to the authenticity of the experience. Please go here, and enjoy!

Yelp
We had a great lunch here last weekend. The food was amazing and the service was great. The drinks were really good too, I definitely recommend checking out this awesome little spot. The steak was delicious, and so was the soup! Can't wait to come back again.

Yelp
Came by for lunch and we had the Club Sandwich and the Croque Monsieur. The club sandwich was an elevated version with grilled beef shortrib! The croque monsieur was an open faced sandwich which was cheesy and comforting. I loved that both dishes came with fries AND salad! The fries were crispy and we were offered mayo or ketchup or both as condiments. Service was also fantastic! It was a lovely spot to stop by while doing some shopping on W. 4th.

Yelp
Food was amazing, the duck is possibly the best dish I've had in the lower mainland. Service is good as well but be mindful of the wait as you can't reserve in advance. Gone several times for dinner and brunch and never been disappointed.

Yelp
Good French bistro, standard fair with good atmosphere. Highly recommend anyone going to make reservations. All the food looks good and prepared with care. I don't recommend the fish in papillote though, it was lacking in flavour and did not wow me as my first experience at this restaurant. The burger and club sandwich looks like the most popular item for lunch as I see many people ordering it. The restaurant can get loud at times, but it's expected as a bistro place. Good for grabbing lunch with a friend or two, but not for prolonged conversation. I would go back again and perhaps try something else on the menu

Yelp
Walked in for dinner on Sunday at around 5pm. We got seated right away as the restaurant was empty. By around 5:30 most of the restaurant was full (as half the tables are used for social distancing between each other). By 6 the wait time was around an hour. We were given complimentary bread right after we ordered. We ordered 3 dishes to share. The foie gras terrine with rabbit was a really good balance of savouriness and sour/sweetness. The caramelized fruit cut the decadence if the foie gras and went really with the brioche bread. My main complaint was that there wasn't enough brioche for the amount of foie gras. The tuna tartare paired really well with the addition of the fresh grapes on top and bits of sweet corn. The lamb crusted with herbs was well accompanied with the creamy funnel puree. The lamb was super tender and had a bit of lamb gamey-ness which I really liked. We finished off the night with the Paris Brest. I've had this once before from Au Comptoir and really enjoyed it. This time the choux pastry was crispier and went well with the praline cream. Surprisingly the caramel on the bottom did not make this dish too sweet. The service was really friendly and fast. They explained everything on the menu well and brought everything really fast. Our water was also never empty. Would definitely recommend having dessert here as well as almost anything on the menu

Yelp
Have been here countless times and must say it's delicious. What I mean by that is that the meats are always well seasoned and cooked perfectly. My favourite thing to order is the Salade Vercingétorix. It's most notable features being the soft poached egg, gruyere and white anchovies. The reason why this doesn't get my full 5 stars is due to the price. I wish, considering the price you're paying, that the meat dishes would come with a bit more sides such as veggies.

Yelp
Stumbled upon this place driving along West 4th. I am so happy we decided to eat here. The place is quaint and intimate. Great place for a date. The staff are warm and friendly and very helpful. The bartender suggested the burger. Hands down this burger will have me back over and over again. I did add bacon but the bartender mentioned if you had foie gras it would be too much. I agree with him. The burger was mouth watering and juicy. The flavours this burger had were top notch. The carmelized onions were better than mine. The burger had blue cheese. It was juicy but didn't fall apart. Partner had the charcuterie board. It was fresh and very delicious - all local ingredients. He would recommend it to anyone. Two people could share with some nice wine before dinner. The Caesar's were one of the best I have had. I highly recommend a stop here.

Yelp
Yum! YUM! YUMM! Au Comptoir has been on my list to try for ages and it certainly did not disappoint. We came to celebrate my birthday with a late dinner (around 8:30pm) and were seated immediately, without a wait. (Unfortunately, they do not take reservations.) We ordered a bottle of wine and enjoyed the following dishes: Tartare de Saumon ($17) - THREE AND A HALF STARS Fresh and smoked salmon tartare, gem lettuce and horseradish. My least favourite dish of the night, not because it wasn't good but just because the other dishes were amazing. The salmon was fresh and the flavours were nice. It just didn't WOW us like the other dishes. Bloc de Foie Gras ($20) - FOUR STARS Cured foie gras terrine with beetroot and apple. Generous block of foie gras with the fluffiest, lightest toasted bread I've ever had. The bread to terrine ratio was a bit off (not enough bread) but hey - plenty of foie gras to go around, so I'm not complaining. Duo de Veau - Veal ($34) - FIVE STARS Grilled loin of veal, glazed veal cheek, asparagus, potatoes, morels and spring onions. Again, very generous portions of veal! Flavours were awesome! Magret de Canard - Duck (32) - FIVE STARS Honey glazed duck breast, turnip, celeriac & potato gratin and rhubarb. Definitely the winner dish of the night! Portions were generous and the honey glaze on the thick duck skin really made this dish stand out! Reminded me of Peking duck skin. Chocolate Lava Cake - FIVE STARS Since we came late in the evening, two of the desserts that we were eye-ing were completely sold out. We settled for the lava cake that turned out to be AMAZING. Which makes me wonder how good the other two desserts were! Service started out a bit slow in the beginning as it was quite busy, but still friendly in the French way ;) This is definitely going up there as one of my top favourite restaurants in Vancouver!

Yelp
I come here quite a lot and have a pretty good impression of the place. Service is always good and despite it being being busy most of the time, it is always clean. Pros: the menu is what you would in any brasserie in France, so you can get exactly what you ordered last time you were in Paris, although that doesn't apply to free bread. The waiters are all French so you can practice mangling their language and they will absolutely pretend that what you just said was grammatically perfect (I actually find this very sweet). The atmosphere is always great with an interesting mix of people. Cons: it is expensive for what you get. The portions are small for some dishes and $11 for the tarte au citron is steep and makes you think twice about ordering your own dessert although I must admit it is perfect. Not a nice place to sit outside as you are right on the pavement with a bus stop right beside you. It's dusty and really noisy, so I would suggest sitting inside.

Yelp
A wonderful French bistro. The baguette took me back to Paris. I haven't had the chewy inside with the crunchy crust since eating in Paris. I had the croque du jour an duck confit on a slice or baguette with melted cheese. Served with frites and mixed greens. I wish we lived here after eating here.

Yelp
Walking into this place makes you feel like you have traveled outside the city. The servers are quickly to great you and the whole vibe of the place makes you feel like you are in Quebec or France. From their cafe latte to their salad to their dessert everything was presented beautifully. . PERIGOURDINE SALAD confit duck gizzard, smoked duck ham, celeriac, curly, shaved cloth foie gras, red wine jus was a little bit on the heavier side but it was very delicious. It was probably one of the biggest and fanciest salads I've ever had. I really enjoyed my experience at au comptoir

Yelp
Super super chic restaurant , right across from whole foods in kitslano. If you enter, it's a trip to France, even the restaurant menu advised you not to modify the dish ! We only went for dinner but they are also open for brunch , and lunch. Dinner starts at 5 pm . Highly recommend is their glazed duck breast , super flavourful and cooked just right and tender. The foie gras is highly recommended as well, super creamy , paired well with brioche bread, unfortunately theres only two slice. A pleasant surprise is their french fries , super super crisp , i love it. French onion soup is on the smaller portion size but it has the perfect proportion of soup , bread and Gruyere, you get a delicious combo in every bite. The only reason keeping it from 5 star is the restaurant doesn't take reservation , if you go their on a weekend at 5 pm sharp when dinner menu starts theres still a 30-45 min wait . So don't go their hungry!
