"The dueling chocolate chip cookies at this Queen Anne bakery act as a choose-your-own-adventure. Pick one of them, and you’ll get flecks of ground espresso woven throughout the brown sugar for a buzzy-bitter caffeine boost. Go with the other, and find a large quantity of buckwheat instead. "Bake Shop is a beacon of good feelings near the Space Needle, an area that can get dreadfully boring fast. There’s natural wine, comfortable seats among the bread smells and espresso machine hisses, and really good salty whipped cream that tops black sesame iced lattes. But you’re really here for pastries. Think of Bake Shop’s cardamom horn like a not-too-sweet honey bun, only in the shape of a wand, and filled with cardamom warmth. "In addition to excellent pastry case items like Yukon gold potato ham and cheese rolls, roasted shallot scones, and banana bread made with rye and oat flour, Bake Shop also has a small selection of sandwiches and toasts made to order with their outstanding bread. Roasted veggie toast is eminently satisfying, with the seasonal veggies getting a pairing of spicy cashew sauce on country loaf. The similarly generic-in-name-only nut butter and jam toast is sea salt topped almond-cashew butter on seedy brown bread, and it’s so good that it doesn’t even need the excellent seasonal jam it’s served with." - Harry Cheadle
