"Every neighborhood could use more ćevapi. In the West Village, Balkan Streat is handling the situation. Inspired by family recipes and street food classics from Southeastern Europe, this counter-service spot also serves flaky stuffed pitas, a Balkan-style burger with a flapjack-sized patty, and puffy filled donuts that ooze like Gushers. Stop by for a quick, satisfying lunch that revolves around bread and grilled meat. The little space, which looks like a street vendor stall as imagined by Philip K. Dick, has a few tables up front, but you can also just take your food to go. Don’t leave without a slice of cheeseburger burek. photo credit: Max Flatow" - Bryan Kim

"William Djuric, the chef and co-owner of the West Village’s new fast-casual restaurant Balkan StrEAT, grew up—on the Upper East Side—with the food of the Balkans. His father, a Serbian artist, cooked goulash at home; in the summers the two of them travelled to Belgrade, and they would eat their way through the region. Later in life, Djuric attended the Institute of Culinary Education and worked at Bouchon Bakery, Gramercy Tavern, and Momofuku Ssäm Bar, all the while dreaming of opening his own ćevapi place. Ćevapi —kebabs served alone or on a bun, with ajvar, a spread of roasted red pepper—are the ultimate Serbian street food. “I knew that eventually, when I did my own thing, hopefully one day, it would be Balkan food,” Djuric told me. “You can get it in Manhattan, but I always thought something was missing—a place that represented the street food, the vibe that I experienced.”" - Shauna Lyon

I had an amazing Serbian lunch today at this nice small NYC cafe @balkan_streat. The food was delicious and yummy 😍😋 the place was spotless and very good and friendly service. I highly recommend this. From burek and warm pittas to Shopska salad and apple or sourer cherry pie! 🥧 they also have good Balkan beer and drinks. It hit the spot! #balkanfood #serbian #nyc #cafe #burek #beer #EasternEuropean #yummy #lunch #amazing #food #ny #restourants #tooplaces

Very friendly staff and pretty tasty carbs they have here! I only tried the ham and cheese roll with their fabulous pistachio donut and I was very happy with both purchases. Two items turned up to be $14 something after tax, it could be a bit steep for some pastries but it’s like that everywhere now (sigh) at least they were both delicious.

Great food & excellent service. I'm not Balkan, but I enjoy good food, and it certainly took me back to the delicious food from Belgrade. You can start with the ćevapi, some pita, and go from there. Super casual ambiance, easy, but with a cool personality. Everything is good! Congratulations to the team of Balkan StrEAT on their opening day! It's a big deal that you sold out, all the best!

The ambient was nice 👍🏻 I really felt for a moment like traveling to a modern version of the former SFRJ (Yugoslavia). I went in, and it was playing old Yugoslav music. A few moments later, English music started to play, and I woke up out of my dream and found myself in the capital west again 😅 The staff was really friendly, but they did not understand the typical jokes from that area. They were probably born already in the U.S. or weren’t home for a while anymore. That was actually the first time in my life when I wasn’t invited as a countryman to any dessert or traditional coffee afterward, and believe me, I tried Balkan restaurants in every country I traveled to! So far, this was my 3rd in NYC. The food wasn’t bad, but I wouldn’t say it was amazing! I can only talk about their so called Burger, because that was the only thing I ordered today! There were either onions, paprika, or some other vegetables in the meat of my Pljeskavica as they tried to stretch the meat with vegetables. That was new for me. It was okay, but probably a one-time visit. For people who have no time to travel to the Balkans but would like to feel some homely atmosphere, it’s a nice place to visit. But with the pricing and the size of the portion, it’s definitely too expensive, in my opinion. $16.47 / 15.16€ / 1,778 RSD / 29.70 KM (23.08.2023 - 08/23/2023) for a only one Pljeskavica / Burger is, without any side dishes included is in my opinion, too much! Also, I don't know how well their business will go once the new Tashkent supermarket with gastronomy opens on the opposite side of the road from them. The owners of Balkan StrEAT should travel to Brighton Beach to take a look at their future opponents' flagship supermarket with gastronomy and reconsider pricing and portions. This was my personal review of Balkan StrEAT

Huge portions and great prices. The kebab beef is so good and the sandwiches are perfectly balanced. The pepper thing is also o e of the yummiest spread I’ve gad in a while. Not from a Balkan country but all my friends say this is the real deal so I assume it is and even if not is so delicious is worth trying. The donut is perfect, so I imagine other pastries are as well.

It was my 1st time there and I'll be back. The cevapi platter for $15 was extremely tasty. I woke up craving Balkan food and this place hit the spot. The owner and staff member were super friendly.

Authentic Balkan snack style food. The burek was different from other Balkan bureks I found in NYC (Queens). Their burek was super fluffy and tasted wonderful. Between the cheese and potato/onion, we liked the latter more. The pistachio doughnut was light and had a decent amount of pistachio taste. Super friendly staff and owner. Limited vegetarian/vegan options.

Even though this is my place of work I felt the need to rate and give my opinion. The food that the restaurant offers is authentic and by all standards this is the only restaurant that follows the strict Sarajevo style preparation of meat. All the ingredients are the top quality meats and vegetables. You will always be welcomed with a smile and you will never feel like a guest in a restaurant, but more like an old friend seeing another old friend after many years! My faves are Sis Cevap (single long kebab packed with ajvar {pepper spread}, cabbage and raw onions in a long somun bread dough), roasted pepper salad with garlic, as well as sour cherry pie (think of gramma homemade style pie) and apricot jam donut. This place is a must and a daily dose of good food! Come check us out!
