The Best Bánh Mì In NYC

"It’s difficult to point to any one thing that makes the #1 our favorite bánh mì at this small storefront in the East Village. It could be the slightly pressed bread that holds all of the ingredients in place and makes each delicious bite the same as the last. It could also be the rich, grainy pâté that’d steal the spotlight at any dinner party as an hors d’oeuvre. Or, it could be the fact that the chà bông adds a layer of porky chewiness to balance the crunch of all of the vegetables. More likely than not, it’s a combination of all three." - hannah albertine, matt tervooren, neha talreja, kenny yang

NYC Sandwich Delivery: Banh Mi Zon in the East Village Offers a Crusty Option - Eater NY

"Best of all at Banh Mi Zon, not only is the selection of ingredients perfect, the proportions are exactly right, too. As it should be, the baguette is light and crusty, and heated in a toaster oven before assembly. Take a sniff and be bowled over by the bready and sour-sweet smell of the sandwich, and be sure to taste each of the three meat ingredients separately to see what each contributes to the mellow overall flavor. This so-called banh mi zon ($10.50) comes wrapped in butcher paper, and if you eat one for lunch today, you’ll want another tomorrow." - Robert Sietsema

We just got Banh Mi's catered from Banh Mi Zon for our weekly office lunch. Shoutout to our office manager for getting Banh Mi's for lunch. That's so gangster. I love Chris Voss's book "Never Split the Difference," which details how to negotiate well and get what you want in life. I negotiated my way to half a beef sandwich and half a Zon sandwich (house special), as I wanted to try both. Would I have been able to do this without using tactically empathy that Chris Voss preaches? I guess we'll never know... The beef was decent, but nothing to write home about. The Zon on the other hand, was the one. It was made up of pate, Vietnamese ham & salami, and shredded pork jerky wrapped in a crispy baguette. 8.5/10 for me. We were all seated around the rectangular table discussing life, liberty, and quotas over our Banh Mi's. A beautiful sight really. I must note that many other reviews say they charge different prices than their menu states, and that's just a great way to piss off the consumer. Just change the menu prices... I didn't experience this first hand though, so it's not affecting my rating. My favorite Banh Mi in the city still comes from Saigon Vietnamese Sandwich Deli in the Lower East side. $10 for a BOMB Banh Mi that was better than any Banh Mi I had in my time in Vietnam... Oh you haven't been to Vietnam!?!?!? Couldn't be me... IG @jnov_ Tiktok @jnov_reviews

The staff are friendly and service was really quick. I ordered the chicken rice plate and the catfish rice plate perhaps because it was towards the end of the night, but the chicken was dry. I have tried their banh mi in the past. Overall I recommend the banh mi over the rice plates.

The purpose of this review is not to hate or harm this restaurant in any way, shape, or form. That being said, I hope you take this review as an informative review. Atmosphere: Tiny restaurant. Seems like they have changed indoor dining experience compared to some years ago. The entrance was a bit disorganized. I'm not sure if this was just a season thing where they only offer indoor dining when it's summer. Other than that, it had a neutral atmosphere. Service: They were welcoming and attentive. They had my order ready by the time they said it was going to be ready. Food: I ordered the Catfish bowl. The food was well portioned, and the flavors from each ingredient complemented each other. I also ordered the Lychee smoothie. Although it was not the right weather to drink it, it still tasted really good. I believe it will taste twice as good in summer. Price: Honestly, their prices are fair. The quality and flavors of the food compensate their prices.

Google
wish I could rate it 4.5 stars-it was pretty good! not even sure why I’m marking it down, I just don’t feel like it’s quite 5 stars because it’s nothing out of this world, but maybe it’s a bias because of the sandwich I ordered? the catfish was cooked nicely, everything else was pretty standard, and the hot sauce on the side (ordered separately) was so yummy. definitely needed it on the sandwich otherwise would’ve been pretty bland

Google
I have been searching NYC for the perfect Bahn Mi, and I have to search no longer. This is it. This is the best. The bread, the veggies, the meat, all amazing quality and so tasty and in the right proportion 😍 The problem with the rest of the Bahn Mi in the city is laziness and Americanization. I don’t want a giant greasy meat sandwich! I want exactly what I got here, you have to go for yourself. Also, the service at this place is incredible. They went above and beyond by letting us try ingredients before we ordered to make sure we would like our meal. They brought our food out to us, as we were sitting outside. I would go multiple times a week if I lived closer 😩

GK

Google
They also were closed all morning and didn't open until 2pm. When I arrived in the afternoon, I hyad to wait awhile for my two sandwiches to be made - seemed like they were prioritizing take-outs rather than in-person customer. Tried sandwiches based on the positive reviews but the filling was little expected more for the price. It was fine but I wouldn't go back again. I did appreciate they had vegan options at least.

I stopped by pretty randomly because I was walking by and was so hungry after a day of viewing different apartments. I had their classic Zon Bahn mi and it was SO GOOD. I used to live in Houston, land of the Bahn mi, and this was on par. Thinking about going back for another one this week… that’s how good it was.

Google
THIS RESTAURANT SENT ME TO THE ER with THE WORST FOOD POISONING! 3 people sick because of this place!!! We ordered lunch for the office and THREE of us were sick by the end of the day. Two out of us three had ordered the same dish (bun bowl with beef curry) and the other a banh mi. I spent 7 hours at the ER having fluids pumped into me because I almost lost consciousness from the dehydration and the violence of the poisoning, with blood in my stool. You can't get THIS sick unless the food has something truly heinous in it. Three days later I am still recovering and unable to eat and still waiting for labs and cultures to come back to know what horrible thing I caught from this place. I wasted 2 whole days of work. Racked a big hospital bill. AVOID AT ALL COST!

Yelp
My friend loves banh mi, so I did a lil research and came upon this place. I'm definitely not a huge banh mi connoisseur or anything, but I love a good sandwich. It's a small place, definitely a buy and take out to go type of deal. I ended up on the coconut curry beef sandwich which is different from banh mis I've had in the past. I'd say you could tell that it wasn't classic. It didn't taste like a banh mi with banh mi flavors; to me it was just a good sandwich. My favorite part was for sure the bread which was soft and not pointy even though it was toasted. I think I commented on that bread at least two times to my friend because it was just... really nice to eat? Does this make sense. I think this is a place you shoudl go if you want to try something a little different. And for good sandwich bread.
google avatar

Chin T.

Yelp
The staffs are friendly, we ordered a Zon Sandwich. They even toasted the sandwich. The bread of the banh mi tastes good. However, there's no seating in the store. Would recommend coming here.

Yelp
On a random Saturday, I was craving banh mi. I looked for store in my area and saw that this place had higher ratings - I ordered a vegetarian sandwich with a side order of eggs. I ordered a side of papaya salad with shrimp. I ordered my delivery through doordash. Wow is all I can say :) The sandwich was still warm and freshly made when I received it. The mushroom substitute for meat was extremely delicious. The bread had the right amount of crunch. Papaya salad was refreshing and not overwhelmingly sweet. Would order again!

Yelp
Since my first visit, I've been back at least 5-10 times and I felt the need to update my prior review to a 5 for always providing such delicious food! I think the grilled chicken may be my favorite but the grilled catfish and the sausage ones also came very close! The curry beef was also fantastic. This is definitely a great Banh mi stop in the East Village! They also do a fantastic jobs with big delivery orders as we've ordered from here for lunch at work for 10-15 people!
google avatar

Yelp
Absolutely the best banh mi sandwich I've had in ages. The bread us crispy on the outside and does NOT cut up your palate. Chewy on the inside an just perfect in every way. Summer rolls are legendary. I can't wait to come back to this place.
google avatar

Justin T.

Yelp
I'm obsessed with the coconut curry beef banh mi. The bread is always crispy perfection (not the scrape top of mouth kind); and the coconut curry is very well-balanced, not spicy at all for those who avoid if fearing that it might be spicy- which leaves room in the flavor profile to add sriracha for those who want a kick. I live that the daikon isn't julienned like other banh mi places, but thicker strips- the warm tartness of the daikon cuts the fat of the coconut curry really well. Also really like the lychee green tea- very refreshing.
google avatar

Stephanie N.

Yelp
I ordered the vegan with gluten free bread, and I think that was my mistake the bread. The sandwich was mediocre and I was happy that they had gluten free but it wasn't the right bread unfortunately. It's a fast casual takeout place without any seating on the strip of East Village that is quite trendy.
google avatar

Marc F.

Yelp
Perfect place to stop in for lunch on-the-go while hopping around the East Village. IMO, a little steep for a banh mi ($12) for takeout, but it's a mighty tasty sandwich. Takes a few minutes to get the sandwich ready, but well worth the wait.
google avatar

Melissa T.

Yelp
The service was really great. The food was amazing. This is a takeout place with no seating, so please be aware of that. We ordered the Banh mi sandwiches. The vegan was full of flavor, and the catfish was perfectly marinated and cooked. We added a fried egg which was the right move. The shrimp summer rolls were very filling and the shrimp tasted fresh. Overall, it was a great experience and I would suggest a visit if you're in the neighborhood!
google avatar

Mary N.

Yelp
My favorite banh mi is here! I get their catfish sandwich, which is full of flavor and pretty hefty. The ratio of bread to filling is great. I can usually make 2 meals out of it. They also have a very refreshing limeade. It's right next to Tompkins Square Park, so you can have a nice meal outside.
google avatar

Yelp
Really tasty coconut beef curry sandwich with fresh crunchy vegetables and perfectly toasted bread. When you walk into this small establishment you spell the delicious smells of authentic Vietnamese food. Yum is all I have to say! Will definitely come back and get this sandwich again. Btw I ordered double meat in my sandwich and it was the perfect ratio of meat to veggies and bread so keep this in mind when you see the picture I posted. Great job guys! This Banh was delicious!!!
google avatar

Yelp
So excited to find a place that does GF!! It was so good to find authentic Vietnamese food and the bread was great! I also had the Vietnamese iced coffee :)
google avatar

Norvel H.

Yelp
Always a quick stop for a very well made Gỏi cuốn (summer rolls). Absolutely scrumptious - even on the go in the car!!!
google avatar

Yelp
Had the bahn mi zon Sandwich and it had really great crunchy baguette. There is no seating, but service was quick.
google avatar

Yelp
The shrimp summer rolls are absolutely delicious! I'll be back to try the papaya salad & iced coffee!

katie C.

Yelp
Excellent bun me with vegan and gluten-free options that truly kick ass! Lovely team, fast and right by the park - perfect for picnics.
google avatar

Yelp
This is yet another stall that does Banh Mi sandwiches. When I entered, I saw an employer enjoying a meal. Shortly after ordering my Banh Mi, another party of two entered. I waited outside as the inside is small. The place was run by a Hispanic and an Asian person. Compared to Xe May Sandwich Shop, the pickled carrots and daikon was savory. The Banh Mi Zon was spicy but was mild enough for me to handle.
google avatar

Yelp
Love this Vietnamese spot in alphabet city. I ve tried a few things on the menus already and there is nothing I didn't love .

Yelp
Hole in the wall but totally worth a stop. Stopped to get some easy food for the plane ride. Turned out to be amazing food.

Yelp
MAYBE the best Banh Mi in the city? ...MAYBE. It was incredible.
google avatar

Yelp
this place is awesome no seating but delicious kinda expensive but delicious kinda small banh mis but delicious i rather have a small Good banh mi than a big tasteless dry one this place is worth the try!!!!!
google avatar

Annie B.

Yelp
So yummy! This is the perfect place to get something to go for lunch and not be dissatisfied!! They have classic, delicious banh mi, and overall the service was great. FYI- Ordering ahead can save you time and they prepare their food early!
google avatar

Masumi T.

Yelp
I found my favorite banh mi spot. 1) The service was great. We weren't sure which sandwich to order so they let us taste some of the meats. Although they were about to close, they were still welcoming and friendly. 2) We went with Zon Sandwich which was delicious. Slight crunch on the bread and just the right ratio of bread to ingredients. I need to go back soon.
google avatar

Edward W.

Yelp
Ordered the zon banh mi sandwich for take out. It's a quality banh mi place. Good balance of all the meats and veggies, bread was crispy. Not too much else to write about but I enjoyed it! Not much space to dine-in, but Tompkins Square Park is nearby.
google avatar

Janet L.

Yelp
Went here after hearing about it. I got the chicken banh mi. I found it to be very salty, chicken was also dry. I don't think all the toppings went together. It didn't feel like a banh mi. Overall okay but for the price of 12 I was expecting it to be amazing

David P.

Yelp
This place is exquisite! The spring rolls are done well here. They were made with precision and care. Will come back!

Idan G.

Yelp
Great Bahn MI. Almost the same test in Vietnam. Could be more spicy. Enjoyed every bite

Sophie D.

Yelp
I randomly stumbled across this shop on Google maps, looking for sandwich restaurants nearby. I didn't read a single review and placed my order for the chicken sandwich. As I walked in, I knew I chose the right place. It smells incredible as you walk in. My sandwich was beautifully flavored, with fresh cucumbers and carrots. It was delicious, and the bread was perfectly toasted. Not to mention, it was ready super quickly! Huge fan of this place for a nice lunchtime sandwich.
google avatar

Derrick C.

Yelp
Banh Mi place in east village. Tried the Zon as a banh mi. It was $12. I probably wouldn't get that sandwich again. There wasn't as much flavor and overall it tasted dry. Staff was friendly and location is convenient.
google avatar

Bonnie G.

Yelp
Read the raves about the place and craving Banh mi all week so had to come here and try it. A little disappointed, I've gotta day. The classic pork Banh mi was really bland and dry, and hardly packed with any cilantro - the star player of a great Banh mi. The summer rolls were fresh and crunchy with shrimp, but nothing too exciting that I'd want to order them again. The best dish? The beef curry Banh mi! Totally shocked me. So flavorful and creamy and delicious on the crunchy bread. I'm not even a big fan of curry and this completely won me over. Would give this five stars. But I probably won't be coming back here - too many better Banh mi places in the city - but if you're thinking of stopping here for a bite, get the beef curry!
google avatar

Jordan S.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I ordered the catfish bahn mi & the coconut curry beef bahn mi, we both agree that those may have been the best bahn mi either of us have ever had!!
google avatar

Jeanie N.

Yelp
This place is a legit Viet place!! I love their papaya salad (they don't skimp on the shrimp!) and bahn mi sandwiches! This place has always been a hit for me! I think a couple (man and a woman) runs it and they are super cute. Very careful about COVID - they'll alcohol rub your credit card before handing it back. If getting takeout, they'll ask you to wait outside and they'll bring you your food when it's ready
google avatar

Basia L.

Yelp
Been here before and had the catfish bahn mi which brought me back, but the Vegan Bahn Mi just now blew my mind. Honestly, all ingredients in perfect ratio; great bread and the perfect marriage of tofu and mushroom on the sandwich. The lychee smoothie was pretty unique, too. Service was fast and it all hit the spot.
google avatar

Morlene C.

Yelp
A good banh mi is perfection in sandwich form. While colonization is a horrible thing, it has produced some amazing fusion food. In this case it was the French colonization of Vietnam that resulted in savory Viet food placed in a baguette. I turn to Banh Mi Zon for my fix because they have the rare seafood option-- the catfish sandwich. The fish is marinated in spices, rendering it tender and flavorful throughout. It complements the pickled carrots and cilantro so well and the bread is always fresh. Any day that I have a catfish banh mi from here is a solid day. When I'm not in a sandwich mood (v. rare) I will gladly order this flavorful catfish over rice, which is a most satisfying carb to pair with this protein. For meat eaters, the grilled chopped chicken sandwich and Coconut curry beef sandwich sound pretty solid and are popular orders, which I gathered just from sitting in the little shop for a few minutes last month to eat my sandwich. They churn out sandwiches for takeout like nobody's business.
google avatar

Yelp
A good Bahn mi sandwich should have a great baguette and fresh veggies and meat with a good sauce that goes in everything . This pretty much had none of those . First off I'd say I would never have ordered from here had I seen they had a B grade ! Their grade wasn't posted which is usually a shady sign to begin with . But let's get back to the sandwich . The bread was pretty much on the stale side . I eat a lot of bahn mis and this bread was the worst of any Vietnamese restaurant I've been to . I have been able to eat left over Bahn Mis days after purchasing and it was still fresh so this bread must have been super old . The veggies themselves didn't seem quite fresh and had too much of whatever sauce they added onto it which made them soggy and eliminated all textures except the sog. The meat (beef) was plentiful which was good but it too was drenched in that off putting sauce . The quality of the beef along with the cut left more to be be desired . It was simply a pretty subpar meal which found its way at the bottom of the bin pretty quickly. I'd never return as this place disappointed on multiple levels . Thank God Xe May is only afew blocks over and I was able to getter proper Bahnmi fix I needed .
google avatar

Marg R.

Yelp
It was my first time trying this place and wow it was amazing. I had the chicken option, my friends had catfish and the zon. We each enjoyed them! We placed the order and were asked to wait outside because the location is small. Each sandwich was made fresh and was full of flavor.

Yelp
The banh mi craving hit me one night after having some drinks nearby. Banh Mi Zon happened to be on my bookmarks list and was still open. It was a little out of the way but we decided to make our way there anyway. I ordered the Zon Sandwich (Pate, Vietnamese Ham, Vietnamese Salami, Shredded Pork Jerky) which is pretty much the classic Viet sammie. It's definitely not the best banh mi I've ever had and more expensive than I would generally care to pay for one of these, but it did the trick. The bread was perfectly toasty, which to me is one of the most, if not THE most important part of a banh mi. Plus, even though they were almost closing, the ingredients were not compromised. They didn't skimp on anything, and nothing tasted like it was sitting out all day. I definitely wouldn't come out of my way to come here again but I am grateful that Banh Mi Zon was able to satisfy that craving.

Yelp
BEST GLUTEN FREE Banh Mi! been looking for a place that has good gf substitute bread for banh mi sandwhich, and this is the one! thats y im giving them 5 stars. their gf rolls have great consistency and dont taste stale.. so five stars forsure. i do like their variety too ive tried most of the sandwhiches, rice bowls, bun bowls, and summer rolls and everything is good worth the price. also enjoy their Vietnamese coffee hot or iced.

Yelp
LOCATION: Between 1st Ave and Ave A at East 6th St. AMBIENCE: Small but cute. They have 2 sit-in tables that fits about 2-4 people each and a counter that faces the outside which fits about 3 people. PRICE: The prices here are double compared to the prices in Chinatown and Little Italy. However they accept credit cards. SERVICE: Seriously really nice and friendly staff. Sometimes they bring your order to your table. FOOD: So far I only tried their classic Zon Banh Mi and the Chicken Banh Mi. The flavors are both really good and legit. The breads were toasted just right. Zon Banh Mi :: I ordered the spicy one and it was delicious and spot on. It has salami, ham, pork jerky, pate, pickled carrots & veggies. Chicken Banh Mi :: I ordered the spicy one again and the chicken was better than I expected. It was tender but heavily marinated so I did not taste as much of the picked veggies on this one compared to the classic Zon. But this is their most popular Banh Mi. I also ordered the Vietnamese coffee and it tastes more authentic than the Vietnamese coffee I had at the Vietnamese restaurant. Overall, I enjoyed it and would definitely come back again to try their Vegan and Catfish Banh Mi.
google avatar

Jamie R.

Yelp
Solid bahn mi! I got the vegetarian and it was really good! It was a little sweet for my taste, but I would get it again. The star for me was the Vietnamese coffee. It is such a treat, so creamy, sweet, and a little bitter from the coffee, yum! There is no indoor seating, only a bench outside, but Tompkins Sq. Park is super close and you can eat there. Really solid affordable lunch spot, I think my sandwich was $10!

Sophia P.

Yelp
Great banh mi for a quick meal (: Their bread is delicious. Jalapeños are so spicy. Beware.
google avatar

Julie C.

Yelp
Stopped by for lunch a few weeks back and was surprised to find this hidden gem in East Village. It's a tight space with limited seating. There are two tables that seat roughly 3 people and a small counter space seating. They have a simple menu with a variety of appetizers, sandwiches, salads, and drinks. I got the Zon sandwich ($10.50) and was happy with what I chose. The bread was perfectly toasted and the perfect amount of pate, pickled carrots, and meat. I do however feel like the price point is a bit high though for the portion size.
google avatar

Giacomo C.

Yelp
2.5 stars. Interesting hole-in-the-wall with a decent amount of Vietnamese sandwiches "and other treats". I wasn't feeling like having meat, and their catfish sandwich sounded awesome, so I got one. Although the bread was crunchy and the concoction of flavors was balanced, there wasn't enough fish... for $11 you'd expect more. I also got their fresh limeade, but it was way too sweet. I would definitely try it again, but next time I'd go for something with more taste (and hopefully more meat, too).
google avatar

Irene L.

Yelp
I heard so many good things about Banh Mi Zon and was excited to try it. It's small with several seatings. I ordered number 1 zon banh mi for $10.50. It had a descent amount of pate but too little meat and too much carrots. The bread was toasted. Service was friendly but the person making my sandwich messed up. (Think her name is Tram) I asked for spicy and it was not spicy at all. It was mild. I told her specifically to make it spicy and I told her I really like spicy. She handed my friend the sandwich and she specified mine was spicy. It was not. It messed up my sandwich it was not spicy at all. I been to so many banh mi places and when I ask for spicy they get it right but not here.
google avatar

Sarah B.

Yelp
Oooo this place was tasty. We were down in the village waiting for our table at death and co. So we went to hang out here for some eats. We ordered the veggie summer rolls and Banh Mi sandwich. It was so good! The vegetables were fresh, the flavors were many but all complimented the sandwich. We'd totally come back! The girl behind the counter was patient and kind. And she made a great dinner for us. You won't be disappointed if you decide to eat here.
google avatar

Pearl K.

Yelp
Banh mi zon is a cute little shop for a quick bite in the LES. I got their signature banh mi zon sandwich and they had it ready for me so fast and served on a cute wooden platter. The bread is wonderfully crunchy and I liked the ratio between the meat and veggies. For around $10, it's not a huge sandwich but satisfying enough. The store itself is very small and I'd probably advise you to order to-go if possible. The smell of cooking garlic (yum!!) will cling to every inch of you when you leave.

Joe C.

Yelp
The beef and the chicken are awesome. The bread is super. One negative, about two years ago I found a hair in the sandwich. This would have been 5 stars if not for the hair. It took me 2 years to go back but I did because this sandwich is great. If I get another hair it's over, fingers crossed i do not want to cross that bridge. Please stay clean.

Kevin H.

Yelp
This place was ok. They don't really feel as authentic as other places but if you are hungry, this will fill you up.
