The 15 Best Restaurants In Cape Town - Cape Town - The Infatuation

"We’ve been coming to Bao Down since it first opened in a small glass-fronted dining room on a residential street in Gardens. These days, it’s twice as big, and the lofty space with a giant balcony in Greenpoint is a great pick for a group dinner. The menu hasn’t changed much since it opened in 2018, which, here, is a good thing—we’d never get sick of their pillowy steamed buns stuffed with spicy Korean fried chicken, or their lemon and miso tart with a cornflake crumb and a dollop of double thick cream." - mary holland

The 18 Best Restaurants in Cape Town, South Africa | Eater

"Getting a reservation at Asian hotspot Bao Down is not an easy task, even after the restaurant reopened in a larger space in Green Point. Opened by husband-and-wife team Graham and Philippa Oldfield (former head chef at Chefs Warehouse and a former caterer, respectively), the restaurant is consistently packed, and with good reason. Inside the retro pink-and-blue space, small but mighty dishes fly out from the kitchen, with options like prawn toast, Korean fried chicken baos, and yellowtail sashimi in a zingy coconut cream." - Mary Holland

Delicious food in a casual environment with great servers. Chef Jason from The Pot Luck Club recommended this spot based on our preferences so we had to visit on the last day of our trip to Cape Town. Each bao was carefully crafted and packed with deliciously seasoned meat. Our favorite was the Korean Fried Chicken bao but every one was good: pork belly, short rib.

Honestly, incredible. In order of favourite dishes, we ordered the hoisin braised beef short rib bao (had to get another of these they’re so good!), pork belly bao, Korean fried chicken bao, tuna sashimi and the cauliflower cake. For drinks we had the Aframisia Spritz and Pulp Fiction and they were top tier. Service, too, amazing. Plates were served one after the other which was actually nice. I have a life threatening allergy to shellfish and this was taken very seriously and communicate amongst the other waiters, which I appreciated. Would return and recommend! ❤️‍🔥

Bao Down delivers a sharp, confident punch of flavour from the first bite. The cucumber salad is bright and ridiculously fresh, the prawn sesame toast is clever, crisp and genuinely memorable, especially with that knockout dipping sauce. The chicken bao is packed with bold, layered flavour, but the beef short rib bao steals the show – melting, pull-apart meat wrapped in a cloud-soft bun. The cauliflower “cake” is an intriguing mix of textures and greens, surprisingly enjoyable and definitely different. If anything fell short, it was the crème brûlée, which didn’t quite hit the high bar set by the rest of the menu. Still, Bao Down is a top-tier spot: inventive food, welcoming service, and a great upstairs deck that sets the tone just right. Epic work all round.

Bao Down in Green Point is an absolute gem! This Asian/Japanese-style restaurant blends modern elegance with a laid-back, welcoming atmosphere. The interior is beautiful — lush plants, warm lighting, and a calm, contemporary design that makes you want to stay a little longer. Service was fast and genuinely friendly, and the vibe and views are just perfect for a relaxed meal or date night. The bao buns were the best I’ve ever had — soft, fluffy, and bursting with flavour. I tried the pork, beef, and prawn bao buns, and each one was unforgettable. The menu is simple yet well-curated, offering just enough to satisfy without being overwhelming. An absolute must-visit if you love authentic Asian fusion flavours and a stylish dining experience in the heart of Green Point.

Visited this gem with my wife and baby for our last meal in Cape Town and were blown away. We’ve eaten at multiple restaurants across Stellies and CT and this was our favourite meal. Staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. Every dish was consistently delicious. We ordered 6 tapas, cucumber salad (yummier than expected!) and dessert but particularly recommend the beef short ribs. Special shout out for the crème brûlée which was made with an amazing combination of flavours we’ve never had before! Amazing work to the team and hope to dine with you again on the next trip!! <3

Great food, great service, great ambience! My highlights were the Thai red curry mussels and the gochujang sweet potato skewers - so good 😍

I had high expectations for this restaurant based on all the great reviews, but unfortunately, my experience didn’t live up to the hype - especially since it was my birthday. After being seated, we waited almost 10 minutes before anyone even brought me a menu, which set the tone for the rest of the service - slow and inattentive. The food itself was decent. The portion sizes were small but quite filling, so no complaints there. However, the overall experience was a complete letdown. I expected at least decent service, but it felt like an afterthought. For a special occasion, this was disappointing.

I had an amazing experience on a date night out on the balcony. Ive never tasted better food in my life. Our waiter, Jason, was absolutely incredible and made the evening even more special. I am definitely coming back for another visit.
