The Best Bars in Portland, Oregon | Bon Appétit

"A sprawling Belmont Avenue bar that feels larger thanks to mirrors and candlelight, it’s easy to pop in for snacks like fried artichokes and head-on Old Bay prawns paired with local brews from Away Days and Upright. The menu includes small-format cocktails called “Littles” (miniature vespers, half dirty martinis) ideal for grazing, or larger, adventurous drinks such as the Eternal Life, which marries mint-and-tomato‑infused gin with coconut and lime." - ByJordan Michelman

The Hottest New Restaurants and Food Carts in Portland, November 2024

"The second effort from Bellwether Bar co-owner Ansel Vickery offers thoughtfully executed bistro-style dishes by chef Jimmy Askren. Warm lighting and dried flower arrangements provide a romantic ambience for diners to share plates like the tuna nicoise, which delivers the right amount of brine from pickled green beans and caper aioli, further anchored by fried potatoes and a jammy egg. At Bar Loon, cocktails are meant to take a backseat to the wine list that offers a mix of pours from Oregon and Europe, but the corn daiquiri is a must-order." - Eater Staff

The Cocktail Heatmap: Where to Drink Right Now in Portland

"This romantic bar from the team behind similarly charming spot Bellwether puts bright touches on well-known classics. The sherry cobbler, made with a house sherry blend and strawberry syrup, is a must-order. Demure, cutesy drinkers will gravitate towards the menu’s little cocktails, petite-but-strong glasses of Vespers or dirty gin martinis. Bar Loon’s cocktails are best paired with produce-heavy dishes like grilled broccoli with cherry agrodolce and farm greens dressed with herb vinaigrette and fiore sardo." - Rebecca Roland, Janey Wong, Eater Staff

Bar Loon Will Take Over the Former Sweet Hereafter Space in Portland - Eater Portland

"Bar Loon, a new bar and restaurant from LBC, just had a liquor license approved at 3326 SE Belmont Street, the same address as Sweet Hereafter. This is not to be confused with Division Street’s Loon, which closed in 2016. Liam Duffy, owner of the Lightning Bar Collective, confirmed that he is a small-percentage owner of Bar Loon but won’t be behind the bar’s menu or drinks. Duffy says that will be Ansel Vickery, also a member of the collective and well-respected for his time running Bellwether Bar. Vickery says the opening is projected for the first week of June. “It was a beautiful space that lived a long and beautiful life,” Vickery says. “We’re just going to change it to assert a new identity and love it in our own way.” No major construction will take place, just touch-ups here and there. Rather than a dark tavern, there’ll be dried flowers and bright light in Bar Loon, more like a wine-focused brasserie rather than a saloon. Tiny snacky, European-style food will be the highlight, and that includes vegan options. Not everything will be plant-based; for instance, Vickery is excited to bring in a bistro burger, a thin patty on a brioche bun. General management and the chef from Bellwether Bar, Angie Ross and Jimmy Askren, will consult on the opening." - Paolo Bicchieri

Love the way the bar is decorated, the vibe, the patio all wonderful. Order at the bar, can close tab or leave open. The good: cauliflower was amazing and the grilled chicken with romesco was cooked to perfection and delicious. I enjoyed the grilled bread as the bread was like a brioche and slightly sweet. Staff was very friendly. The not as good: my partner and I found both the pork tenderloin and Nicoise way too salty. At $25-30 per entree I sadly did not enjoy either of these dishes. A staff member recommended both and maybe we are just salt sensitive but we did not enjoy these dishes. The pork tenderloin was way too mustard-y and too salty. A small amount of the relish would have gone a long way but there was so much of it on the plate. The pork itself was cooked well. The relish was overpowering so we scraped most of it off. The nicoise was also incredibly salty. The potatoes in this were potato wedges and certain pieces were so salty it was inedible. I’ve typically had nicoise with boiled potatoes and fresh tomatoes. I believe the tomato was like a sauce or relish in this - also very salty and not very refreshing. The olives in this made this dish even more salty. The jammy egg and the sauce and the tuna were good in this. I didn’t realize the nicoise didn’t have lettuce/wasn’t a salad or that the potatoes were the fried wedges; else I wouldn’t have gotten it as the dish felt very heavy on its own and was too salty. Overall I liked the vibe and decor. Food was a mixed bag - certain dishes were so delicious; others so salty it made the food almost inedible or unenjoyable.

Amazing new find on Belmont! Cool little mini cocktails, amazing staff, amazing food. This is now one of our regular haunts!

We had a delicious delicious afternoon meal here. We’ve been to and love its sibling, Bellwether Bar, and I’d say there’s a sibling rivalry! Both are great. The service was warm and the food is thoughtful, yummy and just a bit unexpected. Cocktails were great as well. We over-ordered, but this is what the plates looked like when we were done (w/only a tiny to-go box). We couldn’t stop. We’ll be back very soon. Dreaming of that Tonnato…

Google
Really disappointing experience. Was excited to check this place out as I had a good time at their sister restaurant Bellweather Bar, but something feels lost here. I get that it’s self-service so you order food/drinks at the bar, but with a larger group like what we had the concept feels lazy, it was really cumbersome to keep getting out of the booth to go up for the littlest things, I made 3 trips to get water while the staff chatted behind the bar and if you’re going to put a $52 steak on the menu there should at least be a quality check from the staff but all they did was nonchalantly clear plates. The food was a huge disappointment, the Grilled Broccoli was actually rotten, I was aghast that they could serve what was clearly yellow, wilted expired broccoli for $13. Thankfully we opted for the smaller portion of the steak because that was not good either, it had a grey color and tasted like it was sous-vide or something without the proper sear. The cocktails thankfully was better than the food. Very disappointing experience.

Google
This new bar is lovely. It’s more elevated than its predecessor, but not at all snooty. Definitely a great addition to Belmont! P.S. to those who were hoping for a sweet hereafter 2.0; grow up. Believing the new business in a space owes you anything is giving entitled brat and that’s not very Portland of you.

Google
Bar Loon is quickly becoming my favorite bar…I’ve been three times in under two weeks. The egg toast and niçoise totally rip as does their wine menu. I also fully appreciate a staff that always greets you when you arrive and thanks you spending time there when you leave. With other great options nearby like Old Pal, Company Wine Bar, and Tacos Los Punales this is a great addition to a destination area for food and drink.

I visited Bar Loon for the first time the other day and had the best experience! Great food, super friendly and dedicated staff and creative cocktail menu. The burger was 10/10 and the space itself is so cute. Highly recommend a visit!

Google
This place rules. Delicious food. Killer cocktails. Not to mention a wine list that can hang with the best of them. I will be returning to eat whatever I missed on the menu. Eat the fried artichokes !!!

Yelp
Went for a drink and was genuinely impressed, Martinis are always hit or miss for me and Bar Loon seriously knocks theirs out of the park! Everyone at my table all agreed this was the smoothest, best dirty martini we've had in town! This is the perfect spot for date night or to grab drinks with the girls with lots of diet friendly shareable's for all the skinny legends out here! Staff wasn't the friendliest but maybe that's because my friend group is loud drunk women lol -- There didn't appear to be a "dress code" but I'd recommend leaving the crocs and Patagonia's at home because this place is adorable and you'll ruin the vibe

Yelp
I really wanted to like this place--I love their sister restaurant, and the elements like the food, drinks, interiors and patio are all good, maybe even great. Unfortunately, the service is really quite horrible/awkward/unwelcoming and cancels out most of the good. Another reviewer mentioned that the self-service was cumbersome, and I have to agree. The few times I've gone, the line to get anything has been really long and prevents me from putting in new orders/asking for small things like more sauce for my fries. This is mostly due to the staff--they don't manage the crowd well. Most of the time they seem overwhelmed, but they also don't seem proactive about managing the line/talking to each other about what's going on. This leads to folks cutting each other in line and weirdly long wait times to get orders and minor requests in. Another reviewer also mentioned the bartenders chitchatting/not paying attention to folks despite a long line of people... I regret to say I've also seen that happen. And after placing your order at the bar, somebody unceremoniously dumps the food at your table and zooms away. The only way to get anything else you need is either to self-serve at a station that's a little tucked away/hard to spot or stand in the line again. Again, I feel like this would all be fine if this place were a dive bar--but very clearly they're trying to be an upscale place with their interiors/relatively pricey bar food, so it's a bit of a tough pill to swallow. I really hope they pay attention to some of this feedback--I think this place has the potential to be a great neighborhood spot and works out some of these service kinks.

Yelp
Wow. Food on point and the wine selection Was exactly what I wanted. I came in for a Birthday party on a Wednesday. Ordered the beet and burrata and the NY Strip. The presentation of the food was just... *chefs kiss. Spotless bathrooms, and friendly bartenders. I will be back. Elevated cocktail bar, but picnic tables in the back so room for a group kinda vibes. Hell yeah. Well done.

Yelp
I've always wanted to visit this bar, and we ended up going on a whim one day. The customer service was excellent and very accommodating. It wasn't a busy day, but we still managed to get great seats. The floral ambiance and beautiful lighting created a charming atmosphere. The quality of the drinks was outstanding. I'm grateful for the experience and definitely plan on returning.

Yelp
This is a beautiful and aesthetically pleasing space for a date. I enjoyed the burrata with squash as it was well balanced and a large portion. Similarly, the steak was hearty and tender. The carrots had a great sauce and a little bite to them. The food is all slightly over salted. I was surprised that for the price point, you have to serve yourself (silverware, cups of water, etc). The space and quality of food doesn't feel like a fast food or dive bar but serving yourself does.

Yelp
Good and drinks here are so tasty, and the interior is cute, with a nice outdoor patio. The walk up counter for ordering is the downfall- the line is always too long with quite a wait, and there's no table service, so once you're comfy on the patio you're stuck back in the long line inside for another round.

Yelp
Cute space with a back patio for additional seating. Enjoyed this place so much, that I have been back twice in the last few weeks. The food honestly surprised me. I wasn't expecting much, but almost everything I tried was delicious and devoured(so good I didn't take photos). The farm greens and broccoli are a must. So flavorful! The chicken has a really good sauce and shareable! 100% recommend!

Yelp
Love love the vibe here. Super cozy patio! Excellent food haven't had a bad thing here. Service is quick and friendly. Lovely place to go with friends or go on a date.

Yelp
The Tuna Nicoise was innovative, but a bit of bread would have been a generous accompaniment. After all how can I get every last bit if the tasty vinaigrette?

Yelp
Food was wonderful, great facelift from sweet hereafter. Love the ambiance. Inside was nice and cool even on a hot day. Staff was friendly. Service is order at the counter. Somewhat limited indoor seating.

Yelp
I'll be completely honest and say I wanted to hate this place because I was a long time SweetHereAfter regular and I live a one minute walk away, but it's actually delightful, intentional and the people that work here really care about it and it shows. Yes it's more expensive, but it's worth it. It's not a place i'll come to every week but I'll come here a couple of times a year and I will savor every moment and the food is fucking delicious! If you don't love the mini martini, you're a soulless zombie. Kisses.

Yelp
Wish they wouldn't have painted over the amazing wood interior of this space - and wish they had more vegan options and accessible prices. RIP Sweet Hereafter. Portland certainly did not need Bar Loon.

Yelp
I love it here! Such a great space, it's so warm and inviting, the bartenders are all lovely, the drinks are tasty (I've had the white Negroni and the tiny martini quite a few times), the wine selection is good, the food is SO delicious. The freaky flower cloud is cool. Everything is priced well and the portions are good but not overwhelmingly large, plus lots of gluten free options (thank you!). The burger and the half chicken were both heavenly, as was the olive oil cake.

Yelp
Such a charming space with an incredible menu to match. The cocktails are excellent, the wine selection perfection and the food is next level. The Niçoise salad is easily the best I've had in years. Would be a super cute date spot or easy, casual but exceptional dinner spot!

Yelp
Great service and good wine selection! It still has a wonderful vibe like the old Sweet Hereaftet
