Barbounia - Review - Flatiron - New York - The Infatuation

"Is there a new name for this area around Park Avenue South yet? SoPa? ParASo? South Park? Between the new Gansevoort Hotel, TGI Friday’s, and this place, we’re going to need something catchy for all the d-bags to put on their Facebook invites. “Jamie, Sara, Erin, Heather, Jessica, Katie, and Kelli’s Birthday Shindig in SoPa! 9:00pm-4:00am. 6 attending, 821 awaiting reply.” As you can see - we’re not happy about some of the things popping up in this ’hood. But it’s not entirely fair of us to lump Barbounia into the recent terribleification of this fine stretch of city. The restaurant has been in this location for a few years now, before the chains and the clubby hotel showed up. It is, however, a perfectly relevant reference to the trend. Barbounia is a great example of a restaurant built for a certain kind of person. The kind of person that wants a giant sparkler in their birthday dessert. We’ll admit that the food at Barbounia can be pretty good at times. They do nice things with fish in their big wood-burning oven, and the fresh bread coming out of that thing is pretty tasty as well. But this is definitely not a place we can get behind. It’s way too expensive for what they’re serving, and the grandiose and gaudy decor makes it feel like some sort of vaguely Mediterranean performance hall. Like at any moment one of the bus boys might start juggling. Not exactly our ideal environment for dinner. Regardless, those who are drawn in by the flashy new stuff on Park will probably like Barbounia quite a bit. They even have a bottomless champagne brunch. See you there never. RESERVE A TABLE WITH RESERVE A TABLE Food Rundown Hummus By now you should know how I feel about hummus (wildly opinionated), and one thing I will tell you is that it should not cost $8.50 for a half cup of it. This order does come served with a big, shiny loaf of fresh baked bread, but come on. Classic Greek Salad Pretty standard in terms of Greek salad components (cucumber, olives, feta, etc.), but they throw in some za’atar for some kick. A decent option if you want to start with some greens. Charred Octopus Anything that is either grilled or cooked in the wood burning oven will be decent at Barbounia, and this octopus is no exception. This is tender and pretty tasty. We also liked the fennel salad on the plate. Seared Bluefin Tuna Not the best option if you’re looking for some fish. This isn’t bad by any means, but the white fish is where you want to be looking on this menu. Mediterranean Branzino One of said white fishes, this is available whole or as a filet. It’s flaky and pretty delicious, though the lemon potatoes and broccoli rabe on the plate are a bit of a snooze fest. Colorado Lamb Kebab Anything lamb at Barbounia is a safe bet, and I back this just because it’s from Colorado." - Chris Stang

Restaurant had a Mediterranean feel with plenty of light and a delightful breeze flowing through multiple large double doors. Food is delicious. Israeli salad was fresh and invigorating. Chicken schnitzel sandwich was large and difficult to eat but tasted great. Would highly recommend. Reasonable prices and friendly staff.

Had a really good brunch here the other weekend with two friends. We shared the French toast, which was absolutely out of this world. It was so good. We then ordered the pancakes, which were good, but did not compare to the French toast. The other brunch items were all really good, I would highly recommend this place for brunch. You can’t go wrong.

Google
I visited this restaurant based on its 4.6 rating and great location near the movie theater. The service was excellent, and the atmosphere was stylish and inviting. However, the food was disappointing. It looked great on the plate, but it was surprisingly tasteless. As someone who enjoys gourmet food, taste matters a lot to me and this missed the mark completely. I spent over $100 and left unsatisfied. Also, the plates and dishware felt outdated for a restaurant of this level. If you're going just for the ambiance and good service, you might enjoy it. But if delicious food is your priority, I wouldn’t recommend it. I won’t be returning.

I arrived with no reservation and sat at the bar with a friend quickly. Our bartender Eugene D. Was attentive and quick with service. Food was flavorful with large portions perfect to share. Highlights are the spicy feta with bread, the grilled octopus, and the lamb terracotta are all 10/10! Los lighting and music. Perfect for dates with friends or other.

Google
We had such an incredible experience dining here! From start to finish, Gonzalo and all the service was exceptional. The staff was so warm, attentive, and unbelievably accommodating to us and our baby, which made the whole night so much easier and more enjoyable. The food itself was outstanding we were guided toward the best menu choices, and everything we ordered was spot on. The flavors, presentation, and quality were all top notch.

Google
EDDIE is the man, best waiter ever. If I could give six out of five stars for service I would. LOVE THIS RESTAURANT. Such strong and yummy drinks, food is a 10/10.

Google
Very good food, good service, a great way to spend dinner ahead of attending an event at the Gramercy Theater. I was so looking forward to having the rose water panna cotta & it definitely lived up to the hype! Edit to add: I wish restaurants (not just this one) would stop calling button mushrooms "wild mushrooms" on the menu.

Google
This was the best meal of our entire trip to NYC! We come to the city at least 2-3 times a year and this was our first time at Barbounia… it will not be our last! The food was delicious, the service was awesome and the atmosphere was outstanding!!! 10/10 recommend!!

Yelp
My experience and rating is definitely out of sync with the overall rating. Almost to the point you have to wonder if Yelp! needs to do some investigating, or if people are being unreasonable. There are still a ton of four and five star ratings, but really . . . something is up here. This restaurant leans Greek/Turkish. Modern vibe. Light, airy. I sat outside and enjoyed the alfresco dining. I do wish places would stop purchasing chairs with armrests that tighten around the backside. People with ample behinds don't appreciate it. But I made it work, and loved my meal and their cocktail selection. I ordered the grilled flatiron steak-kebab. Served with pearl onions, wild mushrooms, roasted fingerling potatoes, spring onions, Jerusalem artichoke puree, and salsa verde, it was DELICIOUS! A true amalgam of flavors, a delight to the palate. The steak was tender and well-seasoned (which is hard to find these days, believe it or not). The veggies were a delight. The sauce was *chef's kiss*. I also ordered a side of wild mushrooms and fingerling potatoes, not realizing they came with my main dish. But I'm not unhappy that I did. Both are awesome and it was nice to have a little extra of each (though in the end I ordered way too much food). I also got several cocktails. Basilika: vodka, fresh pressed basil, pears, and St. Germain. Refreshing and light. Smoking fruit: passion fruit, mezcal, tequila, sage. Earthy, but still not too heavy. Very enjoyable. I really blew my money at the Tegroni Azul, a Negroni made with my favorite tequila, Clase Azul. I loved this upgraded smoky treat, so I had three of them. Service was on point. A little cool at first, but then they warm up to you and make sure you're always taken care of. This spot has a lot of elevated mains: grilled Atlantic salmon, duck, branzino, lamb kofta kebab, market veggies. They have a very unique brunch service (pancakes, falafel pita, Israeli French toast, green folded frittata). They have a nice mezze selection. I stopped off here after an outing at Fotografiska. It was the perfect ending to a long day. I am very mindful of a businesses' Yelp! reviews, but I also realize that some users can be overly critical or have a different rating system that I do. In my opinion, this restaurant far outperformed it's Yelp! rating and I wouldn't hesitate recommending it to others.

Yelp
Came here for a friend's birthday on a Monday night no less. The place was busy. Given the proximity to Union Square I am not surprised. The atmosphere is not really posh but very comfortable for a good meal. Many parties. Many couples. Food is excellent. Very mediterranean fare although not quite Greek but still. The only thing that sort of made it problematic for me is the noise. The level is deafening. I am not sure how servers work there and can hear what guests order. For us the birthday boy got wrong thing probably because the server couldn't hear him. Other than that excellent place with great kitchen.
google avatar

Jennie A.

Yelp
The space is big with high ceilings and is nicely decorated. It can get a bit noisy, but it isn't so loud you can't hear one another. The ambiance is part of the experience and reminded me a bit of Zaytinya. Definitely a good spot to take someone to for a special occasion. We were a group of 6 and came for dinner. Some ordered drinks and enjoyed them like the caribbean old fashioned. For appetizers, we had the 5 dips (doubled up on the eggplant and skipped the fish) and calamari. We had to order 2 extra servings of bread as what came with the dips was not enough for everyone to have 2 pieces let alone enough for the dips. The calamari came over an aioli and was crispy and tasty, but nothing to write home about. For entrees the group tried the lamb, chicken and branzino. Everyone enjoyed their respective dish and the portions were decently sized. The lamb was served under a bread dome, the branzino came with 2 large filets and the chicken came on 2 metal skewers with about 4-5 pieces per skewer. No need to order sides for any of the main courses we tried. We were too full for dessert, but they have a pretty good selection. The prices are a bit steep, though in line with the area ($40 entrees). I would not go regularly, but it is a good option when you want to go out for a higher end meal.

Yelp
The ambiance is wonderful. High ceilings. The vibe that you are in NYC but not in NYC. The food is so fresh and well made. I had a Greek salad with falafel. Delicious. I had the lamb lunch dish which is an experience all by itself. I won't ruin it by sharing what it is. The hummus and pita is dangerously good. The Israeli salad is such a delight. Service is always solid. They have both indoor and outdoor seating. Unique bathroom set up. But back to the food. Fresh, fresh, fresh. I love it here. It isn't cheap but sometimes you get what you pay for. I really like it here!

Yelp
We were here to celebrate three Aries birthdays, thus Barbounia had the loud frenetic atmosphere for fun! The food is delicious. To start we enjoyed the Mezze of - Hummus, Smoked Trout, Labneh, Cauliflower, Spicy Feta and toasty warm flatbread. Next , we had Entrees of - Short Rib Tagine, roasted Crescent Duck Schwarma , sublime Red Snapper, grilled to perfection Salmon, awesome Lamb Kebob. We couldn't hear one another so we had to be loud. Happy birthday Aries friends and family! 4 easy stars. Sorry, no photos this time, with nearly 1.5k photos here on Yelp, no problem! Thanks for reading

Yelp
Can't believe it took me so long to check out Barbounia! I came here for bottomless brunch and had a blast. The restaurant is quite spacious, although tables are close to each other, making it a bit hard to walk around when you're in a big winter coat. I liked the open layout and the fact that you could see into the kitchen. There are many bathroom stalls available as well (they are co-ed) so I didn't have to wait long. For brunch, I ordered the Shakshuka Merguez. It was delicious, although I wish it came with a piece of bread or pita because the sauce was so good. The mimosas were also good and the servers were so attentive when it came to constantly topping off our glasses. I saw some reviews complain about the service, and we really didn't have any issues. The only small gripe would be that our water glasses didn't get refilled for a while (we had to ask). I would come back for brunch -- next on my list is the Khachapuri!

Yelp
Another lesson in excellence and service This Park Avenue south restaurant had a fantastic menu, but the service is off the charts Very trendy, looking restaurant I don't know who our waiter was constant flow of people just coming to help us Food was uniquely plated, and prepared perfectly

Yelp
Such an awesome spot. Came here for restaurant week, had resos, and caught up with a great friend. We were able to grab some seats outside, but there was seating at the bar and inside as well. The inside is gorgeous! We started with the cauliflower app and it was incredible. More than enough for two people. For drinks my gf got a spicy margarita and I got a vodka gimlet type drink- both amazing. For entrees, we both got the branzinos. Great portion size and delicious. The service was impeccable while we were here too. Highly recommend!

Yelp
The bartenders and staff are great but management is awful. The internet went down and they couldn't accept credit cards. The manager Mo was incredibly rude to me because I didn't have cash on hand, which I was not expecting to need. I left my card on file because I live in the neighborhood and didn't want to short change the restaurant and when I came back to get my card Mo was rude again, saying how it wasn't the restaurant's fault and if I can't afford to pay I shouldn't come. I will never go back despite the food, staff and bartenders being great. Mo has turned me off barbounia completely.

Yelp
Checked this spot off the list of gluten-free friendly restaurants my friend and I have and can say that while we probably won't be running back here, it's not a terrible option if you're looking for mediterranean food in the area. We ordered the: - Omelette (3/5) - Creamed spinach khachapuri (2/5) - Spicy feta (5/5) - Labneh (5/5) To start, our waitress was not very helpful in identifying which dishes were actually gluten free but eventually was able to confirm a couple of dishes with the kitchen (they do not have GF pita, by the way, but they can give you cucumbers). Out of everything we ordered, the spicy feta and labneh were the best. You can skip the creamed spinach khachapuri - not sure if I got a bad batch, but mine was borderline rock hard (bread was dried out) and incredibly salty. Could not eat more than two bites, unfortunately. Overall, Barbounia is just okay.

Yelp
crescent farms duck - 5/5 wow the black rice and tahini and every component on this just paired so well! want to go back simply for this dish smoking fruit - can't go wrong with passionfruit and mezcal went here for a business dinner and the elevated environment/ambience was perfect for it. the food was superb and would be back with friends as well!

Yelp
Wow!! We enjoyed every bite of this meal. We sat outside and had great seats to people watch and eat a fabulous meal. The inside and outside seating are top notch. Decor inside is beautiful. The menu had a lot of options, but not too many. We had several dishes. The Kefta- was one if the best I've ever eaten. The presentation was unique, and filled with flavor. I wish we lived closer so we could visit here weekly!!
google avatar

Beth M.

Yelp
I had the most amazing waiter tonight. The service was excellent. The food was amazing as well the calamari, the octopus, the branzino all super fresh I highly recommend this place anyone who's out in the city. This restaurant really turned my night around.
google avatar

Ria S.

Yelp
If you want a sexy ambiance and somewhere that is ALWAYS packed, come to Barbounia. I've come here on a few occasions, and it's always been crowded. In any case, we were able to get a reservation for last night and we ordered the 5 dips (a must) and the mushroom flatbread.
google avatar

Sloane A.

Yelp
I have consistently had exceptional meals at Barbounia. The short rib tajine is within the top 5 dishes I've had in manhattan. Their bread & dips are also delicious, I highly recommend the spicy feta. This restaurant is beautiful inside and the servers are so so nice.
google avatar

Michelle K.

Yelp
Visited Barbounia for a business dinner with a large group. This place seems to not have the best reviews but I can honestly say that our service was impeccable! Our food was served quickly (especially for a large group) and everyone enjoyed their meal. Stop by if you are around the Flatiron District and looking for a lively Mediterranean restaurant!
google avatar

Yelp
Really nice place The food was good, beautiful presentation Our server was nice and friendly Perfect place for family dinner

Kimchee B.

Yelp
This place never disappoints! Spacious and gorgeous inside, food is delicious and portions are big enough to share. Lovely seasonal cocktails as well. It's lowkey one of my favorite NYC brunch spots!
google avatar

Yelp
What a pleasant surprise - have been meaning to try this place for YEARS and I think it lived up to its hype! Favorite dish the meal: tie with the flatbread/dip and the cauliflower dish! Amazingly tasty and unexpectedly so! Branzino was also great, as was the lamb. Short rib was also solid, though my least favorite of the meat entrees (portions were ample though!)
google avatar

Yelp
Yes, I recommend this restaurant as a really good place to eat. First things first, they have a very lively atmosphere and great music and this was on a Tuesday evening and rather cold night. We ordered a lot of food, drinks, and deserts of varying kinds. The duck, in my opinion was absolutely well-cooked and very tasty even when I reheated the leftovers I had the following day. I also enjoyed the fried calamari appetizer, and cauliflower. For desert I had the pistachio flavored Lebanese Osmalieh which had quite a different taste that I had to get used to but once I did, I was very pleased. For drinks I had the sweet ice tea which came with a clear syrup so I could make it sweet to my preferred taste. It was so refreshing that I ordered another. While it was a very crowded and busy night, we were checked on several times by servers, the hostesses, waiters and waitresses the entire night as if it was the job of the entire staff to make sure everyone was taken care of and it wasn't just up to one or two people. The bathrooms were clean with warm water to wash one's hands and the layout and design of the place overall was nice. I do recommend.

Yelp
Ambiance 10/10 Service 8/10 Food 7/10 Went here for lunch on a monday. The place was quite filled up and we were seated immediately since we had a reservation. We ordered a few drinks. All of the drinks were good.Loved my cocktail which is called Indigo. For the food we decided to do the mezze platter with 5 dips. Loved the eggplant dip and smoked trout. Rest of them were okay .Nothing special. We also ordered the heirloom cauliflower and baby artichokes. But we never got them. And we were so full after our main courses. We reminded them and asked them to cancel. For the main course we got shakshouka and pitas(chicken, lamb and falafel) The shakshouka was tasty.Wish they had given some bread with it to dip in. The pitas were okay.Lamb one was pretty good. The fries and salad that comes with the pitas were good. The lunch menu didn't have a lot of choices. Would like to try dinner next time as the dinner menu looks interesting.

Yelp
Visit Barbounia a few times a year. I LOVE their brunch menu but am not as big of a fan of their dinner menu. I ordered a burger (medium) recently and it was undercooked. Atmosphere is nice, staff is welcoming (se and desserts are INSANELY good.
google avatar

Yelp
A friend and I stopped in for a quick ladies lunch and ordered off the prix fixe menu, and it was such a good decision! We got the mezze platter for the table, everything was delicious, even the eggplant which was surprising to us both claim to not like eggplant. Everything else on the menu is fantastic, the rose is cold, and the service is quick. Highly recommend!
google avatar

Ryan P.

Yelp
This middle eastern, white table cloth brunch was one of the most tasty I've had in NYC, but the atmosphere felt a tiny bit too formal for brunch (hence the 4 stars instead of 5). The decor is beautiful, the staff is exceedingly polite, and the food is memorable. Just know it's a little fancy (and a big space)!
google avatar

Kaitlynn M.

Yelp
Had a great experience at Barbounia a couple of weeks ago! I will start by saying that I was a little apprehensive about going. Usually, I like dining at very intimate restaurants and this is not that. This is quite large and almost a bit corporate feeling but I was super impressed by the food! We did not have a reservation on a Wednesday night and it was packed (pro tip - make the reservation!). We were fortunate enough to sit at the bar and had great service right away. The drinks were all about 20-21 dollars per but definitely delicious. We ordered the Mezze platter and oh my goodness the spicy feta. Why isn't there spicy feta everywhere?! It is the best!! The bread that they serve with the platter is also delicious but it is likely you will need to order more since there is so much dip. The other dish I loved was the octopus. So tender and flavorful (had some olives and potatoes with it). We also ordered the mushroom and truffle flatbread but I would likely skip that next time.
google avatar

Neha G.

Yelp
Spacious, elegant, and just the right amount of artistic flair. I attended a private pre fox luncheon to celebrate a birthday. They did a great job setting up a table for 20+ people. Servers were attentive and accommodating to all. Nice variety of vegetarian & vegan dishes.
google avatar

Fatima H.

Yelp
Excellent food service and the vibe is just amazing - the Manager Mohammad is very humble and down to earth. If you go, just enjoy! The food is amazing and the music and the indoor ambiance is just great!
google avatar

Julia F.

Yelp
This spot is perfect for a "drive by" drink (the Portokali and Smoking Fruit cocktails are standouts) and snack (highly recommend the spicy feta and bread) at their floor to ceiling bar, but dinner is a completely different animal. Prepare to wait an additional 15-30 mins even with a reservation because the volume of covers and table turn around is next level. Our reservation for two was for 9 pm on a Saturday, but the vibe that surrounded us was all about the large groups. While I appreciate how Barbounia showcases all corners of the Mediterranean, some of the dishes had way too much going on to be able to appreciate the main ingredients. The same can be said for their music which went from Levantine and Turkish rhythms to 70's disco to pop from the mid 2000's.
google avatar

Tulina S.

Yelp
Loved the brunch at Barbounia- such classy, elegant decor sure to impress any of your work clients. Some great middle eastern, Turkish fare. Special mention to the pidde with eggs Benedict like dish called khachapuri.. 5* just for this perfection. Turkish shakshouka was delicious as well. Just a little on the pricier side but it's Manhattan after all!
google avatar

Elana S.

Yelp
Their brunches always a win. The shakshukas are not basic mediocre shakshuka you'd be eating all over the city. Especially, Turkish shakshuka. The flavors, the ingredients, the herbs, the size, the taste, whole meal is a pure pleasure. And the bread! It's seriously addictive. But they got too pricey for just brunch food. Everything has a limit. After all it's not Michelin star restaurant.
google avatar

Yelp
1. The ambiance was beautiful. It definitely felt like a fun group dinner spot (how I enjoyed it) or special occasion dinner! 2. The food was delicious! I had the steak & mezze platter and it was all amazing. The bread that came with the mezze was also tasty. 3. The service was where I had issues. First, I asked to have the mezze delivered with the steak because it was going to act as my main dish & the waiter had a serious attitude about it. I was kind of shocked at his reaction but we received it all together so it was fine. Second, my husband & I didn't order drinks (the other 4 people in our group did) and the waiter kind of pressured us... we said no thank you & he continued listing other drinks & we still said no. He asked if we were sure multiple times back-to-back & asked AGAIN when they came back with the other drinks. I tried to be understanding but if this is standard here, I would not be comfortable coming back with friends that are sober. It really affected my experience - I chose not to drink & left feeling really uncomfortable. Third, the waiter didn't write any of our orders down (again, 6 of us so I thought it would be a little tough to remember) & didn't seem to fully listen (refer back to drink convo above) so when we started getting some wrong dishes & my friends orders came 20 min after ours, I can't say I was surprised. Overall, the ambiance & food were AMAZING so I'd return for that but the service left a lot to be desired.

Yelp
1/1 Ambience; 1/2 Food; 0/1 Service; 0/1 Value The atmosphere and decor are lovely. It was rather packed when I went with a friend for dinner, but that was to be expected during a Friday night dinner service. Expect an intimate setting that lends itself well to dates or other special occasions. The food was alright, but I've certainly had remarkably better Middle Eastern food for less at various places around the city. The fire-roasted eggplant with green tahini with taboon was the true standout for us. It was well seasoned, light and perfect for a mezze ahead of our meal. Our meal, however, was disappointing at best. My friend and I shared the roasted branzino and the lamb kofta terracotta. As many reviewers have already pointed out, the flatbread dome does not readily lend itself to eating it. The lamb was well seasoned, but it was very dry for lamb. The branzino was light and mildly refreshing relative to the richer lamb dish, but it did not stand out in terms of flavors or impact. The meal was pretty much gustatorily non-offensive, but not great by any stretch, especially given the price. The worst part of the experience, however, was when our table was cleared before we were finished eating while one of us stepped away to the restroom. We told the waiter that we were still not finished eating, but he proceeded to clear the table anyways. Within seconds of prematurely clearing our table, we were handed the check for a very abrupt finish to the meal. In summary, the food was simply not worth the prices and the service was greatly lacking.

Yelp
This place was *loud* and *packed* on a weekday night - very corporate / business-casual and difficult to hear my friend in conversation. The tables were also tightly packed together so it felt like we were elbow to elbow with the people next to us and couldn't help but overhear their conversations. That being said, I was satisfied with the following dishes we ordered: - Octopus (10/10): Tender, flavorful, paired well with the olive-flavored base. Texture reminded me of the grilled octopus from DOMODOMO. - Fried Artichoke (6/10): Too much vinegar / too sour and wasn't a huge fan of how big the pieces were. I felt like this dish was coated with the sauce. Wouldn't get again. - Duck Shawarma (9/10): Duck was cooked almost perfectly, tender and juicy, came with its fatty skin. I liked the light salt flavor to it (the best way to cook meat is to let it's natural flavors come through).

Yelp
My team and I came here for dinner at 7pm on a Monday night and the restaurant was packed. We ordered our entrees from the pre-fixe menu and had several shared appetizers and desserts. The variety of dips and spreads were very good and tasty. I also enjoyed the fried artichokes and cauliflower. I ordered the steak medium rare and it was cooked to perfection. All the desserts were also amazing. I would recommend this restaurant if you want good food and a great dining experience.

This was a beautiful restaurant with great food! Definitely an ideal spot for bigger groups too. The portions were great. I would definitely recommend this restaurant if you want a unique flavorful brunch!

Yelp
I had a very tasty group dinner here recently. It was restaurant week, so we had the 3-course $60 prix fixe. The first course (appetizers) were pretty good sized, and I really enjoyed the halloumi with beets. Everyone enjoyed their food, and the service was prompt and organized. The restaurant is pretty and fairly big. They were busy on a Saturday evening but seated us immediately for our reservation. I'll have to add this place to the rotation!

Yelp
Barbounia, nestled near Union Square on Park Ave South, left us in awe with its incredible culinary experience. The menu boasted a delightful array of dishes, and we indulged in the lamb, duck, branzino, and a tantalizing steak entree. To kick off our meal, we savored the five spreads, each a flavor sensation. The Fire-Roasted Eggplant with green tahini, marinated Japanese eggplant & zchug was a delightful start. The Smoked Trout, paired with labneh, dill, scallions, olive oil & trout roe, offered a burst of freshness. Hummus, Spicy Feta with charred jalapeno, olive oil, and crushed tomatoes, and Labneh with marinated Israeli cucumbers, garlic, dill, zaatar & sumac were equally divine. Accompanying our feast were two flaming fruit drinks per person, each as impressive as the last. The entire experience at Barbounia was a symphony of flavors and a definite highlight for both the palate and the spirits. The rose water Panna cotta dessert is my favorite !!

Yelp
Rather dissatisfaction - the tuna appetizer was bland and watery. The lamb was also unspiced and small portion. Good service but would not go back

Yelp
I went to this long running Mediterranean restaurant a while ago with a group of others. It is massive with of hodgepodge of flavors but I would say it's mostly on the Turkish and Greek end as per the yelp listing. The staff was friendly though more casual than I would expect for the price point and location and I found one of the people a bit pushy. I really disliked the atmosphere otherwise. As noted by many reviewers (100+ and counting,) this is one of the loudest restaurants I have been to. The music was stuff you'd more commonly find in a club and not in a fancier restaurant. I don't get the reason why this is the case personally as they were very crowded but do as you will. I guess we'll sit outside next time. To drink, I got the Portokali. This was $18 which is fine for Gramercy and it consisted of Scotch, orange marmalade, fresh lemon, and rosewater. The drink was definitely scotch focused but there was adequate undertones from the other cocktail ingredients. A couple people had the Olympia which consists of a martini mixed with muddled strawberries. Note that the prices have gone up it appears (and even more so from old menus from when it was $16 but I presume some of this is Covid. As an appetizer, I went with the Heirloom Cauliflower for $19 which consists of said cauliflower with Urfa pepper glaze, parsley, pine nuts, green tahini, and crushed tomatoes. Urfa or Urfa Biber is a Turkish pepper used mostly for meat and it added a distinct flavor. The appetizer was slightly on the sour end though I am unsure what this was from. There was some nice nuttiness from the pine nuts and tahini. Overall quite tasty and worth it mostly for the price though I have had better Mediterranean cauliflower recently. As my main dish, I went with the Lamb Kofta Kebab "Terracotta" which was $38, This had said lamb kofta along with tomato confit, charred red onions, tahini, pine nuts, and a flatbread dome, The dome reminded me of some biryani spots though the bread on top wasn't as tasty. The lamb was ample and it was tasty though very rich and said tahini didn't help the richness. I think two people could easily share this and my appetizer. As my dessert, I had ($14) which had sate molasses (said silan,) candied nuts, puffed rice, tahini mousse, shredded halva, spiced milk ice cream. I'm unsure if this dessert was made here prior to Dagon or if Dagon made vast improvements but this was just alright. A lot less balanced with a much stronger halva flavor and just less of everything else. It needed more of the nuts and puffed rice and mousse. If the music was of adequate volume and the service was more up to par, I'd probably leave them with a 4 and call it overpriced but good Mediterranean food. They were also a bit pushy with how long it was taking but good luck telling us to get a move on if we can't hear you and the waitress had difficulty hearing us throughout the meal. Low 3.

Yelp
Haven't been here in a long time. A few of my friends say this is one of their favorite places and I never really understand why. The appetizer (dips) are good but nothing special. The roasted eggplant is the best dip but tbh if I were in a supermarket, I'd choose sabra over barbounia. The entrees are good. Portions seem off - dishes like branzino are small and come as a filet with a lot of spinach but dishes like the duck are pretty generous. The forbidden rice that came with the duck was very soggy and undercooked. My friend says they know their wines (I don't) and that the wines tasted old or were not what they claimed to be etc. the server seemed to be upset that 2 glasses of wine got sent back and then made it a point that you can have a sample first - would have been nice if they mentioned that as that's what most places do - they show you the label and pour a sample before pouring a glass rather than just bringing the glass out - that I do know The service was horrible - they were extremely slow and not attentive at all. Again, idk why any of my friends like Barbounia

Yelp
The food was amazing. I ordered the short ribs and they came right out of the stove. Simply amazing. The service was impecable and timed. This place was spectacular. The music, the people just the whole atmosphere was great. I went on a Friday night and it was phenomenal. Lots of dancing and singing.

Yelp
Such a well decorated spot with a reasonable wait time for us not having a reservation on Friday. The spicy feta and Lebanese chicken was amazing. The chicken had a nice crispy flavorful texture on the outside. The ambiance of this place was also very additive.

Yelp
Absolutely loved my experience at Barbounia! We came here on a whim after a terrible experience with Rezdora down the street, so weren't quite sure what to expect. The hostess was super nice and was able to accommodate us with an outdoor table even though we were the only ones out there and came without a reservation. Our waiter Mohammed E. was just awesome, as were the gents assisting him, who made sure we were well taken care of it with water refills, sharing plates, and a silverware refresh. At no point did we have to ask, they were just super on top of things. Mohammed made some excellent recommendations that made for a memorable meal. Don't sleep on the lamb kofta terracotta! It was enough for two people to share and we also got some labneh and hummus mezze to snack on. Definitely get apps as the terracotta took a while to prepare. Wheelchair access details: plenty of wheelchair accessible tables on the sidewalk, step down to in-street dining (same table types as they have on the sidewalk), step free entrance to go indoors, not sure about the bathroom as i didn't use it but my friend saw one bathroom door with a wheelchair symbol so it should be at least somewhat accessible.

Yelp
Everything we enjoyed here during the lunch hour was delicious and service is excellent. I particularly recommend the octopus which was well dressed and tender rather than rubbery - an important fact in eating this cephalopod.

Yelp
My dinner at Barbounia was one of the best meals I've had in a long time. I'm still thinking about it days later. We started with the Mezze sampler which had the full array of Mezze. Every dip was delightful -- if I had to pick one, I'd go with the spicy feta. For my main course, I went with the Lamb Kofta Terracotta. This dish was incredible. It was piping hot, flavorful and certainly a unique entree. The presentation with the flatbread dome was fun and yummy. The drinks and dessert were great, too. And my friends' entrees looked wonderful as well. The service wasn't great. As a midwestern girl, I understand that New York service isn't what I'm used to. But even my "New Yorker" friends were shocked. The head server was a woman who was basically hovering over us, trying to move tables. She tried to clear our dishes when the majority of the appetizer was still on the table. She was pushy and flat out rude. The staff that actually delivered the food were all very nice. I'd go back for sure... just be prepared for a loud and rushed experience.

Yelp
TLDR: Solid Park Avenue location for mediterranean fare. Definitely get that dip platter and the shakshuka! I must be one of the last people to have discovered Barbounia. I was hesitant given the not so great reviews but I thoroughly enjoyed our lunch here. We had the mezzes with the flatbread and also got the khachapuri and shakshuka. The bread was hot, toasty and perfect to pair with all the dips. The khachapuri was tasty but a bit heavy, lots of cheese where I struggled eating through much of it. Now, the shakshuka. I feel this is a dish many places offer but rarely get it right. It was savory, a hint of spice from the merguez sausage and perfectly balanced. The eggs were nicely cooked, just enough to be a bit runny on the yolk. I probably should make another visit because writing this reminded me of how tasty brunch was.

Yelp
Sharp decline in quality since the last time I visited. Service was lackluster and food quality wasn't what it should be. Very dated feel to the restaurant, you can tell by looking at the cocktail list. Perhaps it's time to revamp this space?

Yelp
Phenomenal restaurant! Had the Crescent Farms Duck. Very well done. Get there before 6. The place seems to be very popular. By 6:30 there was a wait list. Try the Silas. Never had anything like this before. Light and flavorful dessert. Great for groups. Be prepared for close seating arrangements. Still comfortable. Highly recommend.
