Battalion - Review - Downtown - San Antonio - The Infatuation

"San Antonio isn’t known for Italian food, but Battalion is the exception, and only partly thanks to its vibey setting in an old fire station with the pole still attached. This Southtown spot excels at sauces, from the brown butter that soaks ricotta-stuffed ravioli, to the burst of pomodoro on the charred green beans that should be a required side for any table. The lamb chops come with a white wine sauce that we could eat by the spoonful, and the marinara on the chicken parmesan is at least 10 times more divine than anything jarred. While Batallion is great for swanky dates or impressing corporate clients, it’s best that whoever you bring doesn’t mind you licking the plate." - Kris Seavers

Housed in a restored 1920s firehouse, this Southtown icon reimagines Italian-American classics with handmade pastas, a sharp wine list, and design drama. The San Antonio Express-News lauded its menu and sense of place.

I really enjoyed how low key the space was — from the lighting to the noise level. I really enjoyed being able to have a casual conversation. Additionally, they have diverse wine selection and the food was really good. Our server was really kind and they were so thoughtful to bring a free cake for my birthday. FYI you can get discounted parking at one of the lots so make sure you ask before hand.

Before coming to San Antonio, I checked out several places to eat near the hotel where I was staying. And I'm glad I chose this one. My friend and I decided to eat outside, which was nice, but despite it being a busy evening, our food didn't take too long to arrive at our table. The food was great, and our server was sweet and funny. I'm no fan of spiders, but I did like that the restaurant decided to decorate the outside with them, lol. Go check this place out!

Food was amazing. Every plate we ordered was delicious. The service was very friendly and fast. They are very busy so make a reservation if possible.

I drove 2 hours from Austin to San Antonio to see Shakira and she canceled the concert. I was really upset and found this restaurant, and I am so glad I did! My experience was amazing; dining here truly made my night so much better. All the food was fresh and delicious. The highlight of the night was the Burrata appetizer! I look forward to coming back just for it. I also had the chicken parmesan which was very good and a very large portion. My friend had the prosciutto pasta and said it was great. Also, I would like to mention that Charlie was a wonderful server. The restaurant was busy and he was on top of all the little details.

Had an incredible evening at Battalion tonight celebrating my wife's birthday!! I've been wanting to try this place for a while now and this was a perfect opportunity for a date night. For starters we had the spinach dumplings and the the meatballs, both were delicious but my favorite were the dumplings by far. For our mains we had the lamb chops and the tenderloin, both incredible. For sides we shared the green beans, the cavatappi, and the manacotti pasta. We were so delighted with all of it and almost too full for dessert....but still sampled the smores panna cotta and the tiramisu. Our server was over the top friendly and helpful, assisted with drink selections and never left us waiting or wanting for anything. (I am so sorry I forgot his name, but he even took a picture of us to celebrate the evening!) Thank you for a wonderful evening and a fantastic dinner!! We'll be back again for sure!!

Battalion, which is located on Alamo Street in Southtown, San Antonio, TX, is an absolutely fantastic Italian restaurant! I recently visited for the first time with my boyfriend + my parents, and we had the best experience!! :-) First, the atmosphere is so lovely (regardless of where you sit in the restaurant). The downstairs vibe is romantic & intimate, and the upstairs setting really embodies the feel of a historic firehouse! Their menu is so wonderful, too. In terms of cocktails, I highly recommend The Arsonist (if you're into tequila-based drinks) - it has a little heat + so much flavor. Regarding their food, everything we ordered was SO good!! I tried several of their dishes, including the: (1) Bread Service with Roasted Garlic Olive Oil, (2) Burrata, (3) Winter Squash Salad, (4) Pear Salad, (5) Ravioli alle Noci, and the (6) Cacio e Pepe. Everything we ordered had small, manageable portions, so it made it easy to share several plates amongst our group. We are so glad we did this, because we each got to taste so many of their plates - a little bit of everything from appetizers, to salads, to pastas! For dessert, their take on tiramisu completed our meal so perfectly. Lastly, the staff at Battalion are so fabulous - they really made our experience all the better. Shout-out to Wasey & Alec, who were both so lovely - we so appreciate everything you both did to make our dinner experience so wonderful! We are so looking forward to coming back, Battalion!

Good was good but not excellent. The atmosphere throws me off though. They could have done something so cool and unique with an old fire house. However, the only connections to the fire house are the name and a picture on the menu. The restaurant is filled with super modern fixtures and glass sculptures. Very strange.

The service was not bad, but a bit inattentive. The atmosphere all around was casual, and sophisticated with a modern edge. The noise level was mid-level. You can have a conversation without spilling into the next tables conversation. The food was good. The Italian pastas seemed to be homemade and sauces were on point. The manager took care of us quickly when we had an issue over one of our dishes. Overall I recommend the food and atmosphere. Bon Apetite
