Wow. What a brilliant culinary experience. My husband and I have been wanting to try this spot for forever, but with reservations needed in advance and limited seating options, we haven't had the opportunity until this past weekend.
Enjoying the Rockridge Rock and Stroll over the weekend, I came in to see if they had any tables available for our party. Now with a baby, indoor eating at certain restaurants can be very tricky with no reservations. After getting a bit discouraged, our party was crossing the street when a waiter came and tapped me on the shoulder letting me know a big party was leaving and they could accommodate us and our baby/stroller situation...outstanding..when does that ever happen in the Bay?
The customer service continued to be exceptional with Frank. The vibes were high after hearing such rave reviews for this place with my dad continuously repeating "you won't find pasta this good outside of Italy anywhere else in the Bay Area", excitement was an understatement.
Beautiful cocktails served with the bruschetta tomato basil - buffalo mozzarella and Lattuga salad to start (butter lettuce with toasted pine nuts). Both dishes so simplistic and fresh, yet filled with bursts of flavor and incredibly picturesque.
Everyone in our party ordered a different pasta variety so we could all share and compare: the Casoncelli Bergamaschi (meat stuffed pasta in a butter sage sauce), Gnocchi Bolognese (I subbed the gnocchi for the recommended tagliatelle which is a long, narrow pasta similar looking to fettuccini but lighter and less dense, the Pasta Alla Ligure (basil filled pasta with green beans and potato), and the Bigoli Al Sugo D'Anatra (bigoli pasta in a duck sugo).
We had just watched an episode of Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy and in Season 2, Episode 8 titled Liguria, he tries Genoese pesto. A dish incredibly special to the region which includes green beans/potato, so it was so fun to try this first hand over the weekend. Belotti nailed the dish and it was by far my favorite. The pasta and sauce tasted pillowy ~ light and just heavenly. The bolognese was hearty, and I could imagine the love put into the recipe reminiscent of my dad's own Sunday kitchen.
We ended the meal with the tiramisu, a large bowl of affogato, and a panna cotta on the house for baby blessings! Delicious.
All in all, it's been a long journey the last few months on maternity leave, and quite honestly I was left speechless in the best way possible. From the service filled with fun and Frank's warm East coast energy, to the exceptional homemade pasta and tummy filling goodness, no notes. 5/5
