Molly Yeh’s Restaurant Bernie’s Serves Minnesotan Hotdish and Challah - Eater Twin Cities

"At her new restaurant, Bernie’s, Molly Yeh serves hotdish in a small iron skillet. Flavors rotate but her renditions are topped, reliably, with golden tots. Bernie’s menu has a little bit of almost everything that defines Yeh’s cooking, including elements of her Jewishness and Scandinavian influences, distinctly Minnesotan dishes, and, of course, there’s hotdish." - Justine Jones

7 Exciting New Restaurants to Know, October 2022 | Bon Appétit

"Food Network personality Molly Yeh brings Midwestern flavors with Scandinavian influences and a touch of Jewish flair to a multi-concept space named after her daughter. The menu features smorgasbords, whitefish toast, halva walnut scones, and a rotating pastry display with playful desserts like sprinkle cake donuts and frosted almond cookie bars. The restaurant occupies a historic nearly-century-old location and will include distinct areas for carryout/counter service, table service, and a market selling Yeh’s favorite pantry items and branded merch." - ByKate Kassin

The Twin Cities’ New Restaurant Openings of Fall 2022 - Eater Twin Cities

"Food Network star Molly Yeh’s new restaurant in East Grand Forks is inching closer to opening. Bernie’s, named for Yeh’s first daughter, will have three separate areas: Bernie’s Farmhouse, a full-service restaurant, Bernie’s Cafe, an all-day cafe, and Bernie’s Market, a retail space for pantry items, cookbooks, and other wares. The menu is rooted in Midwest and Scandinavian food traditions — think rotating hotdishes, roast chicken with potatoes and carrots, and hand-rolled lefse for brunch. Bernie’s cafe will focus on grab-and-go items like open-faced sandwiches of smoked whitefish, salmon, ham, and egg salad, and knoephla soup, a creamy German dish. Bernie’s is taking over a historic art deco building on the banks of the Red River, with more than 160 indoor seats and another 60 on the patio. An opening date hasn’t been announced yet, but expect sometime this fall." - Justine Jones

Food Network Star Molly Yeh’s New Restaurant Is Coming to East Grand Forks, Minnesota - Eater Twin Cities

"Bernie’s will celebrate Midwest traditions (read: hotdish) in a vast, Prohibition-era brick building on the riverbank. 'Midwest traditions, Scandinavian flavors, local ingredients, and REALLY GOOD BREAD will come together under one roof for a magical delicious cozy wonderland called BERNIE’S!' A cookbook author and food blogger, Yeh became a Food Network star in 2018 as the host of Girl Meets Farm, a show highlighting Midwestern farm cooking with influences from Yeh’s Chinese and Jewish heritage. Bernie’s is named for Yeh’s first daughter, Bernadette, who was born in 2019. Although specific menu details for the restaurant have yet to be announced, Yeh’s posts mention 'good bread' and hotdish, a pinnacle of homey Upper Midwest dining. The Instagram video seems to show Yeh and her team testing out fried fish filets, egg sandwiches, and a salad of smoked salmon, greens, parmesan, and soft-boiled eggs. Bernie’s Midwest menu will be served in East Grand Forks’s historic Whitey’s Underground building, a former speakeasy." - Justine Jones

On sunday 8/10 we drove approximately 4hrs (one way) to check out this restaurant. My daughter is a big fan of Molly Yeh and wanted to eat here and since we live with in driving 🚗 distance. We jumped into the car and made a day of it. Daughter tried sweet matcha tea and grilled cheese and pickle sandwich with siracha mayo on the side Daddy tired the biscuits and gravy with tots and coffee Me vanilla cold brew and Avocado toast with egg and bacon added We also got some baked goods for the road chocolate crossiant and elderberry Danish We all loved the food. The daughter said she loved how Molly had the cafe done up so esthetically. Our server was wonderful and very friendly. It was wonderful how she was able to answer all our questions The only down side to the baked goodies was the crossiant didnt have enough chocolate in it .... the daughter said but those elderberry danishes-were wonderful Plus the daughter got her newest cookbook The daughter and I both agreed it wad definitely worth the drive and we will make it again and perhaps next time she will be able to run into the food network chef herself

Cool spot. Delicious baked goods. Ok coffee. Little market for different ingredients and kitchen items. Very large inside. Lots of seating options. Conveniently located with other eateries by the bridge.

the host/servers were nice, I also enjoyed the decor. we really did not enjoy any of our meals. I was particularly excited for the knoephla soup but it didn’t have any flavor? my friend’s salad was not fresh and the chickpeas were slimy (we did share this w/ our server). don’t recommend this place!

Google
We were visiting from out of town. The food was fine, but terrible service by our server Josie. None of the staff were welcoming or friendly. They definitely acted like they didn’t want to be there. The restaurant wasn’t crowded and there were 3 servers. Once seated, we waited more than 5 minutes to be acknowledged at all and then 15 more minutes for her to take our order. She didn’t like my comment when I said we had been ready to order for awhile and then the already poor service got worse. My scrambled eggs were very salty (felt like it was intentionally done after my comment) and my toast came plain without butter or jam. Nobody came to check on us after our food was served so I could ask for jam or butter for my toast, so my son went up to the front counter to ask. We felt like the least important table in the entire restaurant. Would never recommend anyone going here. I haven’t had such bad and neglectful service in years. Our server just stood at the counter chatting and looking right at us when she should have been helping her customers.

Tried for the first time and it was really good. Our server Josie was fantastic, friendly, and helpful. Tried out the leafe dog and was pleasantly surprised. The dog was split and grilled, and all the toppings complimented the dog nicely. The smorgasbord was well made and displayed. The strawberry jam, I believe was housemade and not overly sweet. The salmon was smoked perfectly, lots of flavor, but still juice. The cardamon soda was a big hit-refreshing. Really enjoyed the bake goodies, the tahini monster cookies was soft and flavorable and the pistachio rose muffin was devine. I do agree with the other reviewers, the prices are a bit high, but unique. Will try again. SEPTEMBER 29th - Happy 2nd Birthday! Breakfast was fantastic, and I really enjoyed the breakfast burrito. Made with leafse instead of a tortilla, a great crunch, and the salsa was perfect. The raspberry vanilla steamer and soda were tasty and refreshing.

I love this building and the interior. The staff wears aprons that appear to be period appropriate. The breakfast burrito tasted very fresh, natural, and satisfying. The coffee was good. The service was friendly providing recommendations. We did leave with a crookie. It was so delicious 🤤. Another reason to swing by East Grand Forks.

Just love Bernie’s! Even the simplest sounding menu items are just so well made and full of fun flavors and textures! Friendly staff and such a comfy atmosphere. So many bakery items to take home and the store has amazing food items!

First time I ate there for lunch it was ok/good. This time for breakfast, the breakfast burrito was very good!! My friend had the smoked salmon and avacado salad and that he said was amazing. Lunch was amazing. Soup excellent and a dish with corn bread on top that was to die for!

Yelp
You can grab a table at the front reception. It's a big place inside, nice and spread out. Claire is waiting on us, she is pleasant, just quite busy today. Taking a while for the plain oat milk latte. I got my Stash green tea bag first. Grabbing an oatmeal with almond butter added, breakfast burrito, a hot oat milk latte, Bernie with turkey on a croissant with an upgrade to a house salad with green goddess dressing. I wanted a peanut butter smoothie, but the PB is added with a kale or a pineapple blend, the menu for the smoothies are not so clear to us. There was a mosquito of all things flying around. My husband was able to grab it before it could bite anyone. The oatmeal was okay, would be better with some actual berries and brown sugar and or maple syrup. The breakfast burrito wasn't as big as some, but it was super flavorful. This was the best part of our meal today. It was still filing and had lots of flavor. The turkey sandwich on the croissant was a better choice, not a fan of focaccia bread much. It looked good. The croissant was flaky and good. The sandwich was okay, nice vine ripened tomatoes, not a lot of flavor to the sandwich even with the Dijon mustard, left some to be desired yet for this sandwich. The stash tea was far too weak for the small cup. The oat milk latte wasn't bad, but not strong enough.

Yelp
Not impressed in the slightest honestly. Walked in and there were about 4-5 staff working and not a single person said anything to us, not even a "hello" or a "we will be right with you." The spot isn't even "cute". It looks like a cheap restaurant. The menu is a paper menu that has been reused probably thousands of times. It's quite gross with food stains all over them. Got seated and the gal took our drink order. When she came back with our drinks, we ordered our food. We got four different menu items, and none of us were impressed. I got the lunch meal with a 1/2 grilled cheese with turkey and a cup of soup. The soup was like warm at best, full of celery, and way over spiced with salt. The grilled cheese was very salty, messy, and small in comparison to the other sandwiches. We ordered the wondersub, the review on that was only about the bread. And it was good. It was a massive sandwich, but he only ate half and didn't want the rest. We ordered a ceaser wrap and that came with a lot of chips, that's about it that was good with that one. We ordered a Bernie with ham and a cup of soup with the same review way too salty. Left and no one said anything as we left, as we should have expected, from not being created. Came here because of a food network star.. wouldn't come back again.

Yelp
A few years ago, I was watching TV in my hotel room. On Food Network, I enjoyed watching a marathon of Girl Meets Farm. It featured Molly Yeh. She married a farmer and settled in East Grand Forks in Minnesota. Across from this city is Grand Forks, North Dakota. She started off as a food blogger and ended up getting her own cooking show. I still love cooking shows. Many shows of Food Network tend to be competitions, which get stale and boring after a while. I'd rather learn how to make a new dish. I became such a fan of hers that I met her at her cookbook signing last year in Minneapolis. It was a thrill meeting her, having her sign my copy of her cookbook, and having a photo taken with her. She opened this restaurant, Bernie's, in October 2023. I had flagged going there, not knowing when I'd be in the East Grand Forks area. The last time I was travelling near the Minnesota-North Dakota was well over a decade ago. I didn't plan on last month's travel arrangement of flying into Winnipeg and driving down to the Twin Cities. It meant that heading back to Winnipeg to catch my flight, I'd be cutting through Grand Forks. I planned my late lunch stop at Bernie's. I pulled off I-29 and headed over to East Grand Forks. There's a little bridge with a welcome sign that I took. It was a late afternoon on Sunday. I parked in front of the restaurant. Parking was free. There is parking on the side of this building, but there weren't any available spots. This eatery used to be Whitey's Wonderbar. It was there for nearly a centruy until it closed during the pandemic. Bernie's is named after a few important people in Molly's life: - Bernadette, her daughter - Her husband's great great grandfather - Her great grandfather I walked in to this restaurant. It is huge! There's a merchandise area where you can get everything from t-shirts to beer. There was a rack with clothes that she had worn on her show for purchase, with proceeds going to Farm in the Dell. I dropped by after dining here. I was greeted by a cheerful female server. She led me to a booth and provided a couple of menus. My server was Katie, who was extremely nice and knowledgeable. She was helpful with questions that I had and letting me take some time to figure out what I wanted to eat. Minnesota is known for its hotdish, which is essentially a casserole that often has tater tots on top. I asked Katie what today's hotdish was. It was a veggie one and she was kind to rattle off the veggies. It contained olives. I'm not a fan of them. I find them evil and yucky. I asked if they could be held. Sadly, they were a part of the veggie mixture and I didn't feel like picking them out. I needed more time to find another item. She returned and was super patient. I placed this order: - Diet Coke - Baloney 2.0 sandwich with tots I got water and my Diet Coke first. Both hit the spot. The water was chilled, without any ice cubes. The Diet Coke was icy and refreshing. I got a refill during my meal. My food came. I was thrilled. I was hungry! Baloney 2.0 is kind of what you think it is, but with a cool twist. It had thick cuts of local baloney, mayo, pickle dip, and lettuce. I chose rye bread that was toasted. This sandwich typically comes with chips. I swapped them out for tater tots. I'm glad that I did. They were crispy and delicious. They came with ketchup. I loved this sandwich. It was a brilliant move to provide a thick layer of pickle dip that was a nice contrast with the baloney. It reminded me of having baloney sandwiches as a kid, but this one was a more mature version with the best house-made pickle dip. The bread was crispy. It was a tall sandwich. Luckily, it fit in my mouth. I'd get this sandwich again in a heartbeat. I was too stuffed for dessert. You can browse the desserts where the bar area is. Everything looked yummy, from mini bundt cakes with icing, to gigantic cookies. I used the washroom before I continued my drive up to Winnipeg. I actually had to ask where it was. It was around the corner from the booth that I was at. The women's washroom was quaint and clean. The only downside, which had nothing to do with the restaurant, was that the previous customer seated in my booth wore horrible perfume or cologne on. I managed to get some on my jacket. It was unpleasant. Luckily, the scent went away after I had laundered it. I stopped by the merchandise section before I left. I ended up getting reusable straws that were cheerful and perfect for travel. I paid at the counter with a credit card. All was great. I got my straws packed in a paper bag with handles. I thanked her and headed to my car. I still dream of my late lunch here. It was fabulous, as was my entire visit. I'm so glad that I got dine at this eatery. Should I be back doing a road trip again and cutting through this area, I'd stop by to try more items on the menu. (98)

Yelp
So excited to visit East Grand Forks and eat at Bernie's. I was so sad to see the Whitefish toast was no longer on the menu. So I decided to get the Smorgasbord. I asked if I could get a side of cream cheese. I was hoping for cured salmon or "lox" but it was traditional smoked salmon. My boyfriend got the pickle grilled cheese. He thought the pickle was a bit overwhelming. The space is huge. The waitstaff was very friendly. The pastries they offered were good. I thought there would be more bakery and bread to choose from. We ate there on a Wednesday around 11am. We were the fourth table in the place. It did pick up a little after the noon hour. There is a small area of items to buy. Quite over-priced, if you ask me. They have decreased their hours and no longer serve dinner, only breakfast and lunch options. I was told the menu changes frequently. Since we are from out of town we didn't get the opportunity to go back. I would definitely say go and experience it. I have always enjoyed watching Molly's cooking shows and have one of her cookbooks.

Yelp
We stopped by Bernie's for a late lunch while on a road trip, and we had a great time! Their outdoor seating space was lovely and their interior is rustic and beautiful! Our server, Corbin, brought out our food super quick and it was very tasty and filling. Their pastries and cookies are also excellent, especially their sugar cookie with cream cheese icing. Highly recommend when passing through Grand Forks!

Yelp
We were visiting and looked for a place for breakfast and stumbled across this location. It was a really cute place on the corner and drew us in. It seems like a really large place for a breakfast/lunch place, but they make it work with the cute seating they have setup. Looking at some reviews and realizing the owner was a food blogger and did a stint on Food Network, I decided to look her up while we drank our coffee. Based off the menu alone, I was a little disappointed to see such few breakfast items. Anyone can do a breakfast sandwich and burrito, I was expecting someone who was a food blogger to have more creative, different options and more to pick from. My husband decided to go with the breakfast burrito and it was really good, but again, it was a breakfast burrito. Nothing crazy. I decided to go completely out of my comfort zone and order the baloney 2.0 and oh my goodness it did not disappoint. It was honestly one of the best sandwiches I have ever tasted. The chips were an excellent and in my opinion, always necessary when eating a sandwich, touch. The pickle dip on it was not overpowering and just perfect. I would honestly like to see more creative menu items like that on the breakfast part, and really the whole menu to be honest. I know it is a new restaurant, so I am sure a lot of kinks are still being worked out. But I would highly suggest they get more creative with their menu. Give it a try for sure, and do yourself a favor and order the baloney 2.0. You will thank me later!

Yelp
We waited over an hour for our food. They told us our table would be ready in 15 minutes when we entered. It was 25. We ordered right away and waited over an hour. The turkey sandwich my son ordered had no condiments at all. It was plain white bread and turkey. The croissant we ordered for the sandwich was burned. No effort was made to correct the problem, j Not really impressed with the cement floor.

Yelp
My husband and I enjoy watching Molly on Food Network, so for my birthday I decided I wanted us to drive the 5.5 hrs to try her restaurant. They have different "sections" inside of the building/restaurant that give it a nice and different vibe, with attention to detail taken when putting together the decor. Staff is extremely friendly and helpful. Once seated our server brought us the Parker House Rolls, they were hot, fresh and so good. We ordered the fried cheese curds with house ranch as an appetizer. The curds are so good that you really don't need to dip, however the ranch is so good that we wanted to dip. For dinner my husband ordered the walleye schnitzel, the breading on the walleye is not heavy and adds a wonderful crunch and flavor. I ordered the swedish meatballs, which my husband said tasted exactly the way his mom used to make them. All of the items that accompanied the main dishes were thoughtfully and perfectly prepared. We also ordered four different cookies from the counter, while we were waiting to be seated for dinner. I can tell you, half of them did not survive the drive home! We thoroughly enjoyed our time at the restaurant and loved each of the items we tried. We are definitely planning on going back to try more of this delicious food.

Yelp
When I heard the hot dish special was chicken wild rice I was so excited to dine at Bernie's. Indeed it was Midwest comfort food blended with church basement suppers and made with fresh carrots, celery, real wild rice and the crisp tator tots on top sealed the deal. We were promptly greeted and served efficiently. I always rave about the vision for the setting. The bar, couches, and little shopping area are wonderful. The cooler and freezer section are awesome. We bought a pan of Parker Rolls for the holidays. Can I bake them as well as Bernie's? I'll try.

Yelp
I went in looking for Knoephla Soup. I arrived about 20 minutes before they closed, but the server didn't make me feel rushed. She even brought me an "extra" salad at no charge. I took a chocolate chip potato chip cookie for later. Everything was so good!

Yelp
This is a very pretty place with an interesting menu. The staff are very nice. It's a rather weird combination of service and self service: you have to get your own silverware and napkins after you place your order. They bring the food to your table and take your dirty dishes away. The Bernie, their signature sandwich, is interesting. They make their own sodas and roast their own coffee. I didn't think it was expensive for what you're getting: handcrafted food and drinks. I do have some issues. They make gluten free bread there, but it is made in the same kitchen as all their other bread, so, they tell me, it's not really gluten free, it's just gluten friendly. Honestly, what is the point of this? Who exactly is this bread for? Because if I'm really concerned about gluten free, then I'm not going to get this bread, and now I cannot have a sandwich. Why not buy bread from somewhere else, that is made in a gluten free facility, so that you can actually serve your gluten free customers? Also, I am a good tipper, but when you pay with a card, the tip options on the screen are 25% 22% 20%. I think that's outrageous for a counter service place. This is really quibbling: but the bread is sliced too thickly, making the sandwich difficult to eat (even my dining companion commented on this). Also, the mustard is on the plate, not the sandwich. I guess that's fancy, but it's also a nuisance. And, although, I'm not generally liberal with condiments, there really wasn't enough mustard, and I would have asked for more, if there was an actual server. I thought the soda was overly sweet and I wouldn't get it again. I would return, as greater Grand Forks has few dining options, but I wasn't super impressed with my first experience.

Yelp
The Wondersub and Knoepla soup are both fantastic. Everything seems very high quality and fresh and the focaccia was maybe the best I've ever had...it tasted like it was baked that morning and maybe it was! So damn good. Their cookies and pastries are also fantastic. I didn't think the "Oreo" was going to be all that good and man...it was great!

Yelp
What a lovely place! A former co-worker told me to check this out during a business trip to Grand, Forks. I had no idea that GF had a restaurant from Food Network! I love the style of the interior- art deco meets farmhouse. Super cute and an amazing bar in the middle. Our service was excellent. Kind and friendly. I had the grilled cheese with pickle... and added bacon. So good! I can't wait to come back for their baked goods!!

Yelp
We came to town specifically to eat here, and we were wowed beyond our expectations. The location is so cute, & knowing the history of the previous Whiteys made it feel nostalgic. The space inside has areas that feel comfy like your own dining room, & there's a selection of the cutest gifty things. Truly something for everyone! Trying a plethora of yummy dishes was the best idea: Pickle Cheese Ball - the cheese ball of my childhood, upgraded with pieces of briny pickle & almond slices mixed in! Yummy w/the veggies & Ritz crackers it came with, but I smeared this on nearly everything savory I ate. Especially the: Parker House Rolls - the best soft, flaky salt-topped roll! Served w/soft butter, squishy carb heaven! Extra yum w/the pickle cheese ball! Salmon Salad - a light vinaigrette on butter lettuce, & a perfectly cooked piece of skin-on salmon. Yuum! Fried Walleye - crispy outside, tender inside filets with the most delish garlicky tartar sauce, served w/roasted halved little purple potatoes. If you have to pick only ONE dish, this is the one imo. Grain Burger w/fries - texture & burger satisfaction in a bun! And those FRIES - I dunno, are they tallow fries? They are so FLAVORFUL, I could not stop eating them...especially dipped in tartar sauce. We couldn't resist getting some bakery yums to go: Chocolate croissant - a million flaky crispety layers, with good dark chocolate. One of the best I've ever had! Warmed for a few seconds, this was oozy chocolate croissant heaven. Cardamom bun - a lovely strong cardamom flavor, pearl sugar on the sticky top, texture like the coveted center part of the cinnamon roll! Raspberry pie bar - I'm a sucker for a streusel topped berry pie - & this is that, in a bar! Donut - filled with house made strawberry-rose jam! The rose was perfectly subtle - just a hint, so strawberry was the shining star. Oreo! - ok this is the packaged cookie's sophisticated heftier cousin. Close your eyes & it will bring you back! Potato Chip Choc Chunk cookie - give me sweet/salty any day! Crispy edged & chewy centered! Vegan Brownie - this iced, sprinkle-topped beauty is sooo fudgy! This would make me go vegan haha! Iced Sugar Cookie - so pretty to look at, so yummy to eat! Another thick one! Cookie Salad - we had to get one of these from the frozen case. It. Is. Dangerous! Then we came back in the am for the yummiest, chunkiest! bacon, egg & cheese on a freshly baked english muffin breakfast sammich. I am a sucker for a fresh baked english muffin, & this one was perfection! There were people here who had come from far away, & locals who were obviously regulars. Servers were warm & everyone looked excited to be there. There was even a Molly Yeh sighting! She came in with her hubs & adorable little girls, & was the sweetest - taking pictures & signing books, & talking with everyone. She is just as warm & bright energy as she is on Girl Meets Farm in real life : ).

Yelp
We were in town for graduation and our hotel clerk recommended Bernie's. We went in without checking reviews or anything and were blown away. This restaurant is a GEM in a sea of mediocre bar food spots. First thoughts: Incredible quality food, nice staff and a fun, clean, vibe. Cocktails were quality ingredients and well made. The food had beautiful, bright flavor. The stag was helpful and friendly. Especially Courtney!! She put our experience over the top. We ordered: Knoephla - delicious. Great dumplings and cozy flavor. Briney bean salad - squeeze the lemon and spread the bean paste on the bread. So good! The Wondersub - Really good bread, nice crunch and good flavor. We have such a great time here and the food was the best in GF. Thank

Yelp
Sighhhhh. I love all the UND college students, but they are inattentive as servers! Was at Bernie's on a Sunday afternoon, there were about seven people working. I waited in line for ten minutes despite there being two registers open and only two customers ahead of me. Then, when I ordered a simple drip coffee it took about ten minutes for someone to get around to pouring the coffee into a cup. I also found the prices here to be quite expensive. The atmosphere is cute, but I left feeling irritated by the inattentive service.

Yelp
We ordered take out from Bernie's - everything was packaged amazingly. We ordered 4 bowls of Knephla soup...sadly they weren't filled all the way, very small portions, and it was mainly broth. This was a bummer due to growing up with this soup and I was very excited to see it on the menu and share it with my family. For the price it was not worth it - we spent $40 on broth. The bread that came with it was delicious! In our order we tried out the heart and chocolate chip cookies. AMAZING!! I'm sure if we went to the restaurant, we would have more veggies and goodness when it comes to the soup. I can't give anything less than 4 stars due to this being such a great addition to Forks. Looking forward to ordering this in person!

Yelp
This was the best broccoli soup I have ever eaten. Patty melt and Cesar salad wrap was tasty. The ingredients of the products are of high quality. The waiters were friendly and the our orders came within the expected time.

Hands down the best walleye I've ever had. What the hell is in that breading? Service exceptional as well. 10/10!

Yelp
My daughter who lives in Grand Forks returned to try again- this is what she had to say: Our breakfast was overall amazing! Our server was so sweet and took good care of us. We ordered the breakfast sandwich on an english muffin and it was delicious. We also ordered the smörgåsbord with the salmon and it was great! I got drip coffee and it was perfect! The atmosphere is so welcoming and quaint, such a perfect breakfast spot. We also got bakery goods (how can you not?!?) and they were all so good! We will definitely be returning. She gave it 5 stars for breakfast. Hopefully she will return again to try dinner.

Yelp
Bernie's is an amazing place to eat always. The flavor is delicious and a wide range of choices. Inside is clean and gorgeous. The service is always amazing without any issues.

Yelp
Decent food if you're not aware of the Scandinavian flavor palette. If you are, this is probably a complete win for you. Venue was nice and spacious with a bustling cafe aesthetic. The light color palette is free and bright as sunlight poors in. Staff was polite and prompt. There is a bar but they lacked drink menus. Coffee choices seemed limited which is a bummer when compared to the countless other cafes in the area.

Yelp
Walked into Bernie's on an early Saturday morning. It's open and bright. The server was kind and helpful. We enjoyed a breakfast croissant and a bean spread open faced sandwich. The pickled onions were a nice addition. The take home section had a variety of options - croissants, meals.... We grabbed some overstuffed almond croissants. We warmed them up at home and they were delish! Flakey croissant, lots of almond filling and slivers of almonds. Yum!

Yelp
This place is a delight to see and eat at. Family friendly and can have parties. Cute venue and nicely decorated. Food is high quality and tasty. Every item seems to be well thought out and healthful. I would totally give it 5 stars if the portions were bigger bc I left still being hungry after ordering my Turkey sandwich. It was on this amazing bread that had a tinge of a croissant and French bread chewy feel and taste which was toasted nicely and I wanted more of it as well as more than one folded slice of high quality black pepper filled Turkey and very thin 4mm slices of Brie cheese along with super thinly sliced pickled peppers and pickled onions and small pickles on the side. I liked the amount of caeser lettuce pieces bc I love veges but wished the Turkey was more than one slice and more cheese was added or another cheese like swiss or Gouda bc although I love Brie cheese, on this sandwich there was that fermented white cover taste that didn't go well with the sandwich. The Dijon mustard on the side was very good as well. But for a sandwich that cost $14.50, I was hoping there was more food. The white bean toast was really good as well and a great concept of bean spread on really good toasted and tasty bread. I loved the napkins w the nice design...every detail well thought out. The food choices here are top notch and healthy and hip that you can't find in Grand Forks or East Grand Forks or most of ND. So its definitely a wonderful option. Overall it was a really fun and nice experience w great ambience and nice dessert spread that I definitely will try next time.

Yelp
10/10! Servers were amazing and kind and the food came out amazing. Really nice environment and the treats were delicious.

Yelp
4.5 stars rounded up. I have only enjoyed the cafe part of the menu so I can't comment on the dinner menu (which sounds tasty). I had a standard Bologna sandwich with mustard and it was tasty! I loved the Oslo Punch and can't wait to have it again! Our server was very attentive and sweet. I look forward to coming here again!

Yelp
We made a reservation for one of the first evenings Bernie's was open for dinner. Everything we ordered was excellent from the cheesy pickle dip to the Brussels sprouts we shared to the Walleye to the roasted chicken (incredibly moist and tasty) to the Swedish meatballs. Can't say enough how excited we are to return! The only downside might be that it was rather noisy in the dining area and some mitigation of this might be necessary.

Yelp
We were visiting from California for a football game at UND. My Sister is a fan of the owners food network show. The whitefish toast is great!! The Pastries are fresh and delicious. We will be back next year!

Yelp
This is our second time trying Bernie's after a terrible experience the first time. The server was very sweet but seriously people figure your crap out. Ordered food and the first thing to come out was sourdough toast swimming in melted butter. This came out 40min after ordering, food came 50 min later. They tried to say it's MN law they couldn't serve alcohol before 11am on Sunday which is bs. I ordered a soft boiled egg and it was ice cold, running white and yolk, NOT soft boiled, and not edible. Someone else ordered yogurt and it was warm. Since we waited for food until 11am we ordered our mimosas and they were pure OJ. The breakfast burrito even with chorizo had zero flavor I can honestly say I will NEVER give this place another try. Again no flavor. $90 before tip was NOT even close to being worth it.

Yelp
I think Bernie's has done a nice job reviving the space of Whities, an old staple, and bringing unique cuisine to the Forks area. However, the execution just doesn't quite hit the mark for me. 1. Ambiance and restaurant set up - the awkward gaps between gathering places (i.e, main dining area + bar + couches/arm chairs + shop + secondary dining area) plus the cold hospital cafeteria lighting make the dining experience feel disjointed and a bit like your on show for the rest of the patrons 2. The food isn't consistent - I had the breakfast sandwich on an English muffin the first time I ate at Bernie's. I absolutely raved about the fantastic English muffin. HUGE and delicious. I ordered the same item the second time I dined, and received a sad, thin overcooked English muffin. Would not recommend. I really wanted to give Bernie's a chance to redeem itself the third time, and got the white bean toast.. many of the ingredients listed on the menu weren't present. That's fine, but the server should have been aware and warned me so I could have ordered something else. 3. Seasoning - if you're not going to put salt on the table, better be darn sure the food is seasoned properly. It's quite bland. Which is upsetting because the potential is truly there. 4. Service - the servers are pleasant and kind, however need training on basic table management. Refilling coffee, providing utensils and napkins, grabbing extras in a timely fashion, knowledge of the menu. The ability to anticipate and meet a customers need even before they ask is what separates mediocre and exceptional service. I hope this review helps the management, because like I said, the potential is there and I think the restaurant is very positive for Forks. Just components of the execution are off.

Yelp
I was excited about finally having an opportunity to drive an hour to GF/EGF and eat at Bernie's. I took a seat at the bar (late lunch, so there were some customers, but not super busy) and a server mumbled at me "I'll be right with you." This could have been fine had they prefaced it with a "hi" and/or taken 5 seconds to give me a menu. Instead I sat there for a solid 5+ minutes twiddling my thumbs and staring at the TV above the bar. Maybe they were short staffed or something, IDK. Eventually they reappeared, gave me a menu, and hovered while I decided (not a fan of hovering). I ordered a cocktail and the "Beany Briney Salad", which sounded delicious: "white bean dip, greens, giardinara, feta, served with sourdough". When it arrived I was mostly confused--it was, effectively, a soup plate filled with 8+ oz of bean dip, topped with a small handful of mesclun/greens, some feta, sweet-pickled onions and a whole lot of sweet-pickled multicolored pepper rings, accompanied by 1/2 of a thick slice of sourdough bread. It looked pretty, but was a hot mess to eat--essentially eating baby-food-consistency bean dip with a fork. And instead of the bright-and-piquant giardinara melange of cauliflower/carrots/celery/peppers I expected, just dully-sweet pickled onions and peppers that didn't provide much contrast in flavor or texture. The bread was good, but something rigid such as crackers/rusks/tortilla chips to scoop up the mountain of bean dip would have been more helpful, and would have lent some missing crunch factor. My cocktail finally arrived 2/3 of the way through my meal, with some mumbled apology about having to "go get more fruit" before it could be made. The cocktail itself tasted OK, in a forgettable sort of way. Overall, for a place that has been open for nearly a year, and which charges the prices they do, there were too many basic mistakes that left me frustrated. Dining alone, I can't help but watch the staff and see how they interact with each other and with customers. There were a couple of "middle-aged" staff who seemed reasonably OK at customer service; but the clueless younger workers reflect poor training and mentoring. I dropped $35 (before tip) on lunch (bean-dip-on-a-plate, cocktail, cookie) at a place where I expected a bit of an "experience"... or, at least made to feel welcome. I will put a checkmark beside Bernie's on my list of foodie places to eat, but I won't be back anytime soon.

Yelp
So wonderful!! We are from the Twin Cities and made a special stop while driving through Grand Forks. We enjoyed hotdish and many, many bakery items! The staff is so sweet and our meal was delicious. Can't say enough good things, we will absolutely be making the trip back

Yelp
Stoped by today, October 4, 2022 at 8:04 AM, and they were closed. Schedule says they are open Tuesday through Sunday 8AM to 4PM. However, after waiting by the door several minutes, an employee showed up. I asked her when they will be open, and she said that they will not be open today. I told her that the schedule showed they should be open Tuesdays through Sunday, with Monday off. She shrugged her shoulders like she didn't know. I would have to say that this is a bush league move for a new business. Good luck with that Bernie's!

Yelp
If you want to spend $8 For a singular piece of toast- this is the place to go. Literally. Overpriced, overhyped and the actual restaurant is like a hospital cafeteria and a warehouse had a baby.

Yelp
Bernie's is a very cute restaurant that's perfect for pictures. The food was overall pretty good with the baked goods, breakfast sandwich, and egg salad toast as winners. The green goddess salad was fresh but nothing to write home about. Considering that there aren't a whole lot of restaurant options in the area, Bernie's is a decent place to check out, but it's not a favorite and some menu items are misses. The baked goods seemed to be consistently good though. There a new spot, so we'll see how the evolve with time, hopefully for the better.

Yelp
This place is a cross between millennial eatery and uppity white lady. The service was just fine. Nothing great. The Knephla soup was not very good. Too much oil, celery and rosemary. Plus there a serious lack of salt in the food and on the table. The pickle grilled cheese sandwich was ok. A bit soggy. Bernies is definitely on the high side for just a bowl of soup and a sandwich. The baked goods looked good but, some were mislabeled. All in all I will not be back.

Yelp
We were in the Grand Forks area doing some antique shopping and decided to check out Bernie's for a late lunch. The space is large and very bright - lots of natural light. If you were ever in the space when it was Whitey's - you'll recognize the ceiling even though the whole space has been whitewashed. The service was good- a little scattered, but it was late for lunch and I think shifts were ending. Our food was quite tasty! We ordered the Bernie and the Whitefish toast. I had the toast - with a side salad, I thoroughly enjoyed it (as you can see by my empty plate). It was creamy, flavorful, full of fish, salty and had just the right amount of dill. The homemade Green Goddess dressing on my salad was one of the best. My only critique is the chalkboard in the the cafe area for children. There were kids using it, fulfilling its intended purpose. However, the kids had to run (and they did, a lot) between our table and the families much longer table. Once or twice was ok, but it went on and on. I'm not a kid hater or blaming them - they were being kids. But the constant running back and forth, screams, hoots and outdoor voice talking with the sound of chalk being scratched against the chalkboard. In short - it was super distracting and made it difficult for us to carry on a conversation at our two top. We will be back - the food is great and we need to get a copy of Molly's cookbooks - signed! We were disappointed none were pre-signed but happy to hear she's always willing to sign if she's in the restaurant!

Yelp
Never had smoked salmon on a breakfast burrito so this was heaven. Also got the white fish toast

Yelp
Excellent from start to finish. We got there late in the lunch period but were never rushed. Kaitlin was our server and we peppered her with questions and she answered them all. The food was very good and well presented. We both had the Fried chicken Cesar salad and we would definitely order it again. This place is new, but it is going to be an up and commercial. We are anticipating the dinner menu. Currently it is just linner. Ambiance is simple, neat and spotlessly clean

Yelp
Glad to have a place like this in town. Great sandwiches and a little market with bakery and pantry items. Solid service at the bar on a busy weekend afternoon.

Yelp
Great coffee. Good breakfast burritos. A little pricey. This sentence added for length.

Yelp
We went here for lunch. Sat outdoors on the patio. Very friendly service, delicious food.

Yelp
Wow! This new cafe that took over Whitey's is amazing! The Scandinavian food and bakery is on par with the best restaurants in Las Vegas in a cozy, causal spot right on the river in EGF! For brunch or lunch, order at the front. We recommend picking a table or a sofa near the front for easy self-serve coffee refills and to take in the sunny lighting. It is very family friendly. The kids can color on the chalk board while the adults chat over their delicious lattes, mouth-watering cardamon buns, or sandwiches with homemade bread. I can't wait to scoot over on a cold, snowy day this winter to warm up with a bowl of their dumpling soup and a cup of coffee!

Yelp
We celebrated a birthday with a party of twelve. Molly Yeh, herself, was the hostess and she granted us many selfies both before and after the meal. For dinner, we had the steak, the walleye, and the Swedish meatballs. Everyone raved about their meal. For me, I have never had such a perfectly prepared and lightly breaded walleye. So delicious, as were the sides. Then, she surprised us with a yummy tapioca dessert to celebrate my brother's birthday. The atmosphere and the service were also perfect. Thanks to Bernie's and Molly and the entire staff on a wonderful restaurant in East Grand Forks.

Lisa ..

Yelp
Service was poorly organized. Some tables not bussed for over 30 minutes. Salad was way over dressed. Servers themselves were delightful but did not have any leadership. I wanted to love this place but didn't. Maybe next time.

Yelp
I wanted to leave a review on Open Table but since they weren't able to handle my reservation, I am unable to. I had reservations with my mom. aunt, & cousin for a ladies day out. We drove from Detroit Lakes to eat at Bernie's. We were about 25 miles away and 25 minutes from reservation when they called to say they couldn't honor our reservation as they were having kitchen issues. What?? So we pulled over and headed back. I had read similar reviews on Open Table for a particular day, but also many positive reviews. This is extremely disappointing!! We won't try to go there again. We had all really looked forward to it, as we are followers of Molly's show. Get your systems figured out if you hope to stay in business. And if you're traveling a distance to dine here, I would think about that first. Oh, and when the message said to call back to reschedule, could only get voicemail. Called several times with same issue, couldn't get through.

Yelp
It's unusual to have a restaurant that is run by a celebrity in our Podunk community. The knefla soup was adequate compared to real German from Russia grandmas! Good luck! It's a nice touch when you come out and talk to your costumers. Yeh!

Yelp
Awesome sandwich! The Bernie was delicious and huge! The bread was fabulous, tons of meat and the olives and fixings made the sandwich! The service was great too!
