"This bar and sister spot to Mammoth has a few tables set up on the sidewalk that also spill onto the street a bit, too. There’s a lot of great BBQ happening here as well, from smoked jalapeño hushpuppies to big bowls of pulled-pork-topped mac and cheese. Not to mention a bunch of tasty, summery vodka cocktails." - aimee rizzo

"If we ever held a virtual seminar entitled “Mac & Cheese In Seattle (And You!),” we would start our presentation by identifying two problems we’ve noticed upon years of observation: portions tend to be a bit small here, and you don’t see too many restaurants that offer customization. But Bitterroot BBQ solves both of these issues with their glorious cheesy elbow macaroni. Their version is a tremendous helping that looks more like a family-style Thanksgiving side dish than dinner for one. Plus, you have the option to add a bunch of toppings, like bacon, pulled pork, caramelized onion, smoked jalapeños, peas, BBQ sauce, and roasted red peppers. Oh also, it’s just an excellent bowl of cheesy noodles. Thanks for coming to our seminar." - aimee rizzo

"Ballard’s barbecue specialist serves outstanding sandwiches, such as the pepperoncini-braised beef, as well as big platters of meat, from pork belly to ribs to smoked chicken. There’s beer, wine, and cocktail kits (such as creamed old fashioneds) to-go as well. Available for takeout and delivery through Chownow." - Gabe Guarente

The restaurant I visited that specializes in BBQ exceeded my expectations. I ordered the pulled pork and smoked chicken, and was delighted with the generous portions. The meats were tender, flavorful, and expertly smoked. Accompanying my meal were a variety of delectable sides. The French fries were crispy and perfectly seasoned, while the cheddar grits provided a rich and creamy complement. The highlight, however, was the jalapeno cheddar cornbread, which added a delightful kick to each bite. The ambiance of the place was appealing, offering both indoor and outdoor seating options. I chose to dine indoors, enjoying the rustic decor and cozy atmosphere. The waitress was attentive and provided excellent service throughout my meal. One minor inconvenience was that they only accepted card payments, but this did not diminish my overall experience. In conclusion, this BBQ restaurant impressed me with its flavorful and plentiful offerings. The combination of succulent meats, generous sides, and attentive service made for a truly enjoyable dining experience. Whether you're a BBQ enthusiast or simply craving a satisfying meal, this place is definitely worth a visit.

Google
We walked into this place because the smell was that good. We weren’t even looking for barbecue. Our server was really cool and I think that was the best part. The most delicious dish we had was the fries and even though I am a fry fiend I’m not sure that’s a good thing. The grits were also delicious the slaw unfortunately had no flavor and the ribs were pretty dry. Pretty big bummer there but still giving it four stars because Experience was great and the few things we did enjoy were pretty dang good. My partner really loved the mac & cheese, I must add that.

Google
UTTERLY AMAZING. So good for the price. This sandwich was $12! I only had half for dinner with hush puppies (DELICIOUS) and some cornbread (which was alright but the sandwich was the real star). Can’t wait to go back. Let the pics speak for themselves.

Google
Everything was a big portion and so good! The bbq was perfect I wasn’t expecting it to be so flavorful since most bbq places can be a hit or miss! The Smoked Rib Bites was a good amount for one person and if you think you’ll want to share you won’t! Pink Pickled Deviled Eggs were great as well I thought it would have that overpowered pickled vinegar-y taste and smell and it didn’t which was a bonus. BBQ Nachos we’re also great and they didn’t slack on the pulled pork as well. It was a lot of meat, with a good amount of black beans, caramelized onions, and sour cream. My friends invited me to barbecue night yesterday. I said no, but now I’m regretting it. That was a missed steak 🥩🤣

I'll say upfront, having been extensively exposed to Southern BBQ I have high standards. Seattle has lots of great food options, but in general leaves a lot to be desired in the BBQ category. Bitterroot continues this tradition with good for Seattle, but not very good in Tennessee type of BBQ. The portions are respectable, the sauces are good, but they just don't have that crazy depth of flavor and juiciness you would hope for. Is this a good option for dinner if you're in Ballard? Sure! Should you expect top tier BBQ? No :(

Google
Delicious would be the word I would use to describe Bitterroot! I eat here every time I'm in Ballard! The pulled pork sandwich is crazy good and they make a gourmet Mac and cheese that's amazing! It's located right next to the weekend farmers market as well. This makes for a great location to eat at while enjoying the market! It does get pretty busy, but is worth the wait if there is one. Definitely give it a shot your next stop in Ballard!

Had the lemonade cocktail and could not be happier. we ordered brisket, ribs, cole slaw, corn bread, grits and roasted carrots. I liked them all. Especially the mustard sauce. Yum. Lots of food for two people, we were stuffed.

Google
My 1st review in over a year or more but after eating at Bitterroot BBQ aka MammothI felt guilty leaving and not. They have the best pulled pork sandwich I've had since I can remember. With 3 different kinds of house made BBQ sauce to choose from, for a steal of a price at $14 even before tax. With a very healthy portion of pork/ham, this sandwich does not disappoint. Very much looking forward to trying everything else on their menu! For a side I tried their cheddar grits, which were creamy perfectly cheesy, and cooked. They know what they're doing!!

Yelp
This was our favorite BBQ and Whiskey spot in the Ballard area. We are disheartened to learn of its closure. They do have a sandwich shop which we will try just because the bbq here was so damn good.

Yelp
I looove the brisket here. My recent piece was a bit fatty, but I kinda like it that way. I'm going to miss it. The cheese grits are good, and the beans are really good (like Bush's baked beans but less sweet, more real, and minus anything that resembles "can"). Smoked wings were nice enough, but strangely, I wish they were smokier. I thought it was cool that they came with pickled carrots & dip, but I actually would've liked fresh veggies too, to cut the salt. Rib tips are great. The Creamed Old Fashioned was alright, but I was bummed that it didn't taste too different from others I've had. It didn't taste "creamed" enough. I've only eaten at the restaurant once, and it was outside, during the Sunday market. The table was slanted because it was on a slope, but I realize that just happens here in Seattle and ya gotta deal with it. Otherwise, the outdoor area is very pleasant. Service was decent. I heard this place is closing down. Sad, I liked having a bbq place nearby with good brisket & beans. Best wishes to the owners on their next adventure.

Yelp
This is a vegetarian review: Came here on a Saturday afternoon and it was busy. Restaurant has indoor and outdoor seating. Incredible menu with tons of options. Sandwiches ranges $12-16 and does not come with a side. Ordered the vegetarian dishes (I know - at a bbq spot, silly) so don't expect this amazing entree but it's satisfying enough that you're not subjected to the Mac n cheese if you wanted to avoid meat and be with your friend group. The tofu was lightly smoked, not a lot of flavor. The sauce for the salad and sandwich was spicy and really good. Recommend extra sauce for the salad. Both dishes were equivalent to a Banh Mi.

Yelp
Stop #2 on our pub crawl. They only had a porter available in the can, so all three of us got it. The Stoop Porter was pretty tasty. Outdoor seating area was nice, but I wish they had a little better beer selection. Off to our next stop...Reuben's Taproom

Yelp
The food was absolutely delicious and the service was even better As a small business owner I can tell you that customer service is everything and Harry's got it down !!! Thank you so much

Yelp
Solid bbq with some highs and some lows. My biggest complaint is that mac n cheese needs to be a side, not just an entree. We opted for two appetizers and the cowboy killer. Fatty pieces of the brisket are like burnt ends and terrific, but the center meat can be dry. Pulled pork was the best meat. I'd skip on the macaroni salad in the future, but the other sides were great. Smoked Jalapeno Hushpuppies - standard hushpuppies in being supplementary, bread balls. Basically cornbread balls, but less dry than cornbread so they're a hit. The jalapeno was not prevalent so there wasn't a crazy pack of heat. Smoked Honey Mustard Rib Tips - these can be better or worse than the rack ribs depending on your taste buds. Definitely would recommend giving them a try. They weren't glazed as heavy as the rack ribs so you're appreciating the meat more, but this means they can be a little drier. Cowboy Killer is a crazy feast that likely feeds four. We barely finished it with three, but we were all bloated and stuffed afterwards. Four is a perfect number. You get four sides of your choice and four of the meats. Potato Salad - creamy and solid potato salad. Large chunks of potato and mixed pretty well. I'd even put some on my brioche buns and enjoy a miniature sandwich with this potato salad. Macaroni Salad - under average macaroni salad, wouldn't bother again. Cornbread - I'm not a big fan of cornbread honestly and I consider it to be pretty dry, almost like having sandpaper in my mouth. My friend however, loves cornbread and demolished this one. I found it to be the same as any other cornbread, so if you like cornbread, you'll like it here. French Fries - your standard fries. You get a pretty good amount of fries on the side especially with them being served on a separate tray. Solid fourth side to round out your meal. Brioche Buns - some solid buns that are grilled but would do well with some butter. I took some butter from our cornbread but I'd prefer just standard butter as the buns are grilled. Pair this with your pulled pork and you have a fantastic pulled pork sandwich. Pulled Pork - easily the best meat here. Perfect consistency, taste, and fattiness. All of the pulled pork was made well and there was no variation between bites unlike the other meats. 1/2 Rotisserie Chicken - the outer pieces of the chicken is fabulous and delicious. Each bit is juicy but as you dig deeper, you're presented with white, dry meat that's difficult to take down without sauce. Brisket - the fatty pieces are easily the best item here, but the meatier part is drier and tougher. This means the brisket averages out as a whole. Eating the brisket was a roller coaster of high moments with juicy fatty pieces similar to burnt ends and low moments of chewing through tough meat. 1/2 Rack Ribs - glazed in a fair amount of sauce, these ribs did fall apart easy. Solid ribs overall to take the number two spot, but nothing extremely fantastic.

Yelp
Some friends and I dropped by on a Friday evening to grab some dinner before we left for Portland. We ordered a variety of foods, including nachos (not pictured), a couple sandwiches, hush puppies, and cornbread. The hush puppies and cornbread with honey butter were served first - the hush puppies were deliciously warm and crisp, but the cornbread got a hard pass from everyone. It was cold, and paired with a heaping scoop of cold honey butter, it was not a great experience. The sandwiches were much better - turns out they're from Mammoth and not made in-house, so not sure how applicable my review of these would be here, but I'll include it anyways since we ate them in the dining room. We had the Moa and the Predator, both of which were very good in very different ways. The bread was nice and chewy, meat all flavorful and tender, but that's where the similarities end. The Moa is a refreshingly light sandwich that's filling and packs a punch while the Predator has a heavier, richer flavor to it with the thick slab of meat and aioli. Was definitely a fan of the sandwiches!

Yelp
The atmosphere is amazing (love outdoor sitting in ballard areas!) and the staff was nice, well-caring. But the bbq was just okay - not bad but wouldn't highly recommend to foodies. Also, not a restaurant fault but there was homeless person wandering and fighting right next to our seats, which brought unnecessary tension to the night out.

Sophia Y.

Yelp
Solid bbq/sammich offering in Seattle - I enjoy coming here for quick bites and drinks when out in Ballard. It's cozy inside and they do have a small outdoor seating area as well. Be warned your old fashions will be on the sweet side as it is premade but it comes extremely quick upon ordering which is a plus. Fried chicken sandwich is filling and yummy but I wish they have fries as an option. Will post more pics of their standard bbq offerings in my future visits!

Yelp
Walking the main strip of downtown Ballard, I'd see this place in passing, there's always people here, and now I understand why! Savory and succulent dishes from the pulled pork nachos, to the chicken sandos - a comfort foodie's dream. Family friendly, even with an adventurous cocktail menu. I recommend having everyone get something different, and grabbing a couple plates to share. The food envy is real!

Yelp
Stopped in here on a whim on a Friday. Food was fantastic, vibe was great and the service was friendly. My husband is particular about bbq and not easily impressed but we were both very happy with our meal. The jalapeño hush puppies were baller, beet deviled eggs were perfect, the mac and cheese with pulled pork is a must. I had the burnt rib ends and they were everything I was hoping for, nice and smoky and not fatty at all. I had the whisky flight and was not disappointed, the hubs had another whiskey cocktail that was real good. The portions were very reasonable for the price. 10 out of 10 we will be back!

Yelp
My daughter wanted this place's Mac and Cheese, so I ordered a meal for Uber Eats to pick up our order from Bitterroot BBQ. I ordered bbq ribs with potato salad and greens. The ribs were dry, and came with no bbq sauce. I tasted, and didn't eat. This is a bbq restaurant, right? The potatoes in the potato salad were not cooked nearly enough. I couldn't eat that either. The worst were the greens. They tasted like you were tasting pure vinegar. You could not tell it was greens. I paid a lot of money for Uber, and the food, not to be able to eat any of it. I guess my daughter's mac and cheese was okay.

Yelp
We were heading home from Golden Gardens Beach Park and found this little place only a few miles away! It was fairly easy to find using our Maps, but there is no parking. Luckily, we found the food pickup spot near the corner (a few feet from the restaurant). I jumped out and picked up our order before the cops on foot made it up to our Jeep. Watch out for them. They were checking every single car parked along the curb. We were in the pickup spot about 7-10 minutes. Whew! Well, we saw the Cowboy Killer online and called in the order. It was ready for pickup in 15-20 minutes. However long it took us to leave the park and navigate downtown for an open spot to park - the food was ready. Quick and easy to pay & pickup the order. The drive home was too long as the aroma filled the SUV. So, I had to dig in. No forks or plastic ware provided, but I always keep a set in my purse! Haha. (I have a toddler, but it came in handy!) The portion size of the sides were smaller than expected. However, everyone (at least one in our family group) seemed to like them. I prefer sweet cornbread, so it wasn't for me. My brother said it tasted delicious with the special butter spread that came with the cornbread, but I was not as impressed. Too dry even with the spread lathered on! The asparagus was nice with a hint of citrus and a delayed spiciness. It was still a little crunchy, not too soft. I liked it, but wanted more to share. The kiddos liked the fries, but didn't finish one serving. They became soggy by the time we arrived home. I thought they were lacking something, but I do love fries that taste and look like real potatoes. Warming them up in the toaster oven brought them back to life! Now, the part you have been waiting for. Thanks for reading this far. The brisket tasted amazing! I didn't care for the half inch of grizzle which my brother said should have been trimmed down more. BUT, it had a nice smokiness and tenderness. YUM! I wish that was ALL we had because the chicken and pulled pork were underwhelming. We would definitely go back for more BRISKET!! We know good brisket after having lived in Texas for many years! Next time, we will order specific items. Getting the Cowboy Killer was our way of sampling, but it is NOT cheap. Seattle prices and west coast portions, I guess. I'm accustomed to Texas and the South!

Yelp
Went here after searching for a barbecue place that makes nachos. The vibe is cool the service is attentive & relaxed and the food is delicious! I got the nachos 10/10 The coleslaw 2/10 the cornbread 5/10 and the fries 10/10. I was so hungry I ate the food before I could take a photo for anybody so the next time I go back I will make sure of that!

Christopher L.

Yelp
Wow! I've been looking for a great bbq place with some mustard based Carolina bbq sauce and this place has it! The pulled pork was delicious and the sauce was perfect with it. The hushpuppies and the baked beans were ok but the potato salad was spot on. Also, the the fried chicken sandwich was crispy and the bun was 'fluffy' and was great paired with the slaw. Overall, this place is great and the food travels well. If you are in the area stop by or order takeout, you can't go wrong with either choice.

Yelp
This area of Ballard is an in-between kind of place. Its cobblestone streets and old brick buildings tend to make you forget how close you are to the city, and that only adds to its charm. I should warn you that if you drive, be prepared for SHIT parking. Especially you drive anything bigger than a midsized vehicle. However, once you overcome that obstacle and get to BITTERROOT BBQ, you are in for a treat. A treat that you will spend your next day at the gym doing nothing but cardio paying for. Be warned that you order AT THE COUNTER. Don't sit in your seat (Like I did) and expect them to come to you. I didn't expect great thing from a BBQ joint, and it was decorated pretty much like I thought it would be. Basic, with flashes of personality here and there. That's not a bad thing. The drunk list is OK, but the true star of the show is the BBQ. I can truly say that there is nothing bad on the menu. The servings are so that you will probably be able to take some home and on the table, there is a selection of three different types of sauce. If you feel the need to add more. All in all, this is a wonderful lunch place or a place to eat right before a small pub crawl. My biggest complaint is that they didn't have fries.

Eric H.

Yelp
The brisket is amazing. The chicken was also incredible. Nice smokey flavor without being slathered in sauce. The server was super nice and made sure we had a great time. For the quantities you get, the prices aren't bad either. Definitely recommend.

Daria S.

Yelp
Fantastic pulled pork!!! All three of us loved our huge pile of meat. The sides were fabulous too: cornbread with honey butter, cauliflower with a light olive oil and vinegar dressing, sweet glazed carrots and a crunchy Cole slaw. I recommend the hot toddy served in a camping mug. Seating for COVID tomes is in a heated outdoor tent that was nice a cozy on a rainy evening.

Chris N.

Yelp
The brisket here is next level AMAZING! Service & vibe also top notch + good taps. I did a birthday here awhile back, came back in and bam...just as great, maybe even better. Get in here pronto!

Erica H.

Yelp
The food is spectacular (and that's coming from 3 incredibly discriminating food enjoyers/cooks/former resto workers, one of whom is Southern, so we're not talking hyperbole here). And as we were looking at the menu, a very enthusiastic fellow diner was just leaving and said the hush puppies were not to be missed. But this review is specifically a shout out for the truly wonderful, ultra-pro waitstaff. A friend and I went yesterday evening, and we the only table interested in sitting outside in the cold. This was my first visit to sit at a restaurant of any kind in literally years now, and I'm still being *extremely* cautious with regard to SARS-Covid. Y'all were so, SO gracious about seating us out there, wrangling the heater for us, etc. I'm definitely going to try to drag my better half back at some point for some takeout and maybe a couple of those awesome looking cocktails!

Joshua B.

Yelp
The original chef left and the food is not the same. It's really bad :( so bummed, this was one of our favorites. Delete.

Brent B.

Yelp
I was in the neighborhood and was looking for a spot to eat lunch and came across Bitterroot. Being from the south I wasn't sure what to expect eating BBQ in Washington, let alone Ballard. But I went in with an open mind and decided to try it out anyways. Right from the start the restaurant smelled really good and had a neat atmosphere and the staff was very friendly. I ordered the sliced brisket plate, cheddar grits, and fries for my sides. I ordered the brisket half lean/half fat, it came out looking like prime rib, I was shocked. This looked like it was 80% fat and 20% lean. This was nothing like I'm used to, but I still decided to try it out and not make a fuss, after all, the staff was friendly and the food smelled good. The meat had very little flavor, and the amount of fat was honestly turning my stomach the more I looked at it, however I decided I'd trim the fat off and only eat the lean portion, once I did that there was very little lean meat left to eat, very disappointing. Potentially I could've avoided this by ordering it only lean, obviously my expectations of half lean half fat doesn't match theirs. Then I turned my attention to the sides, the fries weren't bad, but nothing better than you'd get from Wendy's. The grits had a slight pungent flavor, I believe this is from the cheddar cheese they use, not terrible by any means but not delicious either. All and all I can't see myself coming back for the brisket, I might consider trying another dish if I'm in the Ballard area again.

Yelp
Came here for dinner on a whim and in my honest opinion, I was pretty disappointed. Service was normal, and no complaints, but the food was sub par in my opinion. I ordered the mac and cheese with bacon and jalapenos. According to my preferred taste, the macaroni was undercooked and the taste of the cheese was bland. I guess I was expecting something more like Beecher's cheese taste, but I got more like American bland cheese. Not sure what cheese they actually used but that's what it tasted like. For 14 bucks, I honestly probably would've preferred like the Annie's at home pasta. I feel like that had more flavor. I also ordered a Tito's mule and for the price ($12), I would assume the mule would come in copper cup like it usually does. Nope, just a normal glass. Nothing to write home about. Also, we sat outside and I get that it's Seattle, but i kept smelling urine the whole time. So if you go here, don't sit on the corner on the bottom right of the outside. It wasn't nice smelling the urine while eating food. Overall, in my opinion this place is pretty overpriced for what you get. If it was like $9 or $10 mac and cheese and a $8 mule, I'd probably would've given it more stars, but for the price they should be offering more. If asked to return, I don't think I would. On a lighter note, my friend ordered a chicken sandwich and it looked a lot better than my mac and cheese. Maybe that's better? I think those are Mammoth sandwiches though? Not so sure how this place is set up.

Caitlin H.

Yelp
I've tried a few bites of the smoked chicken thigh in a Mammoth sandwich before, and I was hoping Bitterroot's smoked wings would be as good. They didn't quite live up to the mark. But with the hot sauce and ranch, they weren't too bad. The menu says that the nachos come with cheddar, but I don't know about that. Mine had some kind of completely flavorless white cheese. I really love cheese on nachos (isn't that the entire point of nachos?), so it was super disappointing to not really have it. I brought my own banana peppers to enhance the nachos a bit. I wound up making little nacho sandwiches with those, the pulled pork, the sweet onions (which were outstanding), and just a hint of sour cream. I don't normally like sour cream, but theirs was good. The chips themselves were pedestrian and lackluster at first, but they got better once they soaked up the grease from the pork. Putting aside the fact that the nachos weren't what I wanted, they were still pretty good. The cornbread was probably the worst thing I've ever eaten in my life. It was cold, and incredibly dry and grainy, almost like just eating thick grains of cornmeal. I can't say enough bad things about it. I won't get any of those things again, but I do still want to try the pulled pork sandwich here. I also have to commend them, because I ordered the hot wings with the sauce on the side, and the nachos with no beans, and also sauce on the side, and they executed all of my modifications perfectly, which doesn't always happen at other places.

Larissa M.

Yelp
The food was absolutely amazing! Coming from California, it's tough to find a decent bbq place. But this far exceeded expectations! Lexie was so friendly and sweet too. The ambiance is like a time hop to some great tunes from the 2000s too!

Miranda W.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I came here for lunch, really on a whim, because I was craving some mac n cheese and this spot looked promising. We were pleasantly surprised with the overall atmosphere, food, service, and outdoor seating arrangements. I ordered the Macaroni and Cheese with bacon and caramelized onions and I was not disappointed. The portion size was more than generous, it was so creamy and cheesy, and tasted as good as it smelled. Though a bit pricey, this really satisfied my craving and I had enough leftover to box up for lunch the next day. My boyfriend ordered from the Mammoth menu and decided to try the Predator sandwich. It was a substantial size, the bread was toasted perfectly, and overall tasted great. Not to mention, he loved the sauces it came with as well! They really boosted the flavor altogether. Just a great place to get a bite to eat with some friends or family. Really appreciated the ample outdoor seating.

Caleb N.

Yelp
We love the Mac n cheese. My wife and I have been going for years as well as ordering and there no complaint about quality of the product. However, the portions have zero consistency. Whenever we order two portions it's as if they take one and split it between to 2 go boxes which is strange considering they are charging $17 for macaroni n cheese without the additions. We really like the food but this has started happening way too often and quite frankly it's bullshit. So you may be better ordering one order for 2.

Athene D.

Yelp
Not a bad spot for lunch. A friend and I went here after doing some shopping in Ballard on a Saturday afternoon. It wasn't terribly crowded or noisy. The menu is BBQ/southern comfort food. They have most of the classic dishes; starters, salads & chili, mac & cheese, sandwiches; meats, and southern style sides. Items like smoked jalapeno hushpuppies, chili, beef, pork, black beans, sour cream, tortilla chips, pulled pork, pickled red onions, smoked 1/2 chicken, house-cured and smoke pork belly, &cornbread, honey butter. They had some BBQ on the table, one sweet, one mustard, one "XX" hot. The portions sizes also match! We actually shared the mac and cheese and still had some to go as well as taking half our salads home. I had the mixed greens, balsamic salad. My friend had the Cesar. Then we shard the mac&cheese and added bacon and peas. The salads were slightly over dressed and a copious amount of greens, we probably each had 4 cups of greens alone. The mac&cheese was really great. It was super creamy and had a nice simple toasted breadcrumb layer on top. I dont really do salt, but this defiantly wasn't over salted. Overall this was a really nice spot to have lunch

Katie M.

Yelp
So delicious! Came here on a Saturday while exploring Ballard and I'm so glad we stopped by; great service and food! I'll definitely be back. First they do have an outdoor seating area during COVID, and I heard they'll have it up till at least this October! Hopefully even longer. Burger: Absolutely delicious, I know what you're thinking, why order the burger at the BBQ place? but let me tell you the combo of jam, Mayo, that aioli was great. Ordered it Medium rare, and I'd highly recommend! Ribs: my friend ordered the ribs and I tried one. Also very good, but I liked my burger a bit better! Also their sauces are super good!

Joan S.

Yelp
I have to be really honest I was disappointed with the food The ribs were over done Hard to chew The beans were so watery it was like soup The service was excellent Not going back

Liz Z.

Yelp
On the hunt for late-night Mac n Cheese last night, found this cute restaurant with friendly, fast service and huge, delicious portions in downtown Ballard. It was 930pm and we got mac n cheese with peas mixed in and pulled pork on the side, and a mac n cheese with jalapeños and pulled pork. Also got sides of fresh red cabbage cole slaw and yummy, sweet baked beans. Their sandwich menu (which is avail until 7pm) looks great, too -- will be back to try that and their bbq (which is served until closing) this week, as soon as we're done devouring our leftovers.

Heather V.

Yelp
Great vibes, service, and BBQ! Highly recommend getting jalapeños hush puppies and a side of potato salad-you won't be disappointed.

Carol T.

Yelp
Was having a lot more expectations for everything at this place. The decor was cute and the prices were good, but the food was not as good as we expected. Something to root for is their bbq sauces that went well with most things, kudos to that. Mac and Cheese (3.5/5) - SUCH A BIG PORTION. Could not finish this between two people. I would not recommend putting jalapeño in it which made it kind of weird and had an odd kind of mushiness to it. The pulled pork on top was really good as well. I thought their bread crumbs on top was unnecessary as it made it less creamy , because without it, it had the perfect texture for mac and cheese Cornbread (2/5) - Corn bread was topped off with minimum butter which made eating it difficult as it was sooooo dry and crumbly. Maybe it was burnt? But the taste was just so bland without any of the better. Brisket (2/5) - Almost did not seem like bbq and the presentation didn't help it at all. The piece we got was not fatty at all except for one end which made the piece so hard to chew because of the lack of fat. Was disappointing overall.

Yelp
I came on sunday and got takeout while walking around the market. The sandwich was huge and tasted great!! only complaint is they only packed me 1 side of barbecue sauce and I wish the barbecue sauce would have been on the meat all ready because I felt like the meat itself needed more seasoning. Will be returning!

Yelp
First time post Covid. Like many places the menu is more limited. However my ribs were delicious. They have a good beer selection and everything on the menu is good.

Yelp
Pretty good and for context we ordered through uber eats delivery. I like the ribs. It was very tender and tasty. You don't actually need the extra sauce but if you like foods extra saucy like me then definitely get the original sweet bbq sauce. The mustard and spicy ones are not good. The brisket is well a brisket. It's got the thick meaty part if you like that and then the fat tender part. Sides are decent. We got the macaroni salad and coleslaw. Wings and fries are decent. I like the main flavor.

Yelp
Went here yesterday a few hours before their brunch menu was finished being served. When we arrived there was only one table open, luckily for us it was a two person table and no one else was waiting. The ambiance was hip and casual. I would use the word 'trendy' for this place. The brunch menu had solid choices and I may just have to go back to try some of the dishes. The table next to us ordered the Chicken and Waffles and it smelled and looked super yummy. They were out of the sweet potato hash at the end so if that is something you want to try, I would recommend not waiting til the end of Brunch to go. I was eyeing the mac and cheese but ended up slitting the cowboy killer with my boyfriend. I love going somewhere where you can get a variety. This was the perfect option for me besides the fact that mac and cheese was not a side dish and the price was a little bit high. If you are a real meat lover, you will enjoy this place. Their bbq was flavorful and juicy. The waitress said the top dishes were the Brisket, Chicken and Ribs. Chicken is not normally my go to choice of protein but it was a top favorite of the meal. I also ordered the Squirley Shirley. It was exactly what the menu said it was, Ginger ale, Pineapple Juice and Grenadine. I am not a fan of drinking from a cup with ice in it without a straw so I asked for one. Apparently they recently stopped serving drinks with straws unless it is ordered from the bar ? I guess that semi makes sense since you can drink a non alcoholic drink fine without a straw but I do not like the ice hitting my face in any way. One of the waiters or maybe managers went and got me a straw from the bar even though our waitress told us no. It was a very kind gesture and something I appreciated. They have good customer service here. I wonder why it is not rated higher...

Yelp
A staple of the neighborhood, the barbecue is very flavorful and I like the variety of sides. The seasonal sides are especially tasty, like the roasted squash in the fall. The outdoor covered patio is well-lit and has plenty of seating options. The meat itself can sometimes be a little dry depending on what you get, but still flavorful.

Yelp
I'll say upfront, having been extensively exposed to Southern BBQ I have high standards. Seattle has lots of great food options, but in general leaves a lot to be desired in the BBQ category. Bitterroot continues this tradition with good for Seattle, but not very good in Tennessee type of BBQ. The portions are respectable, the sauces are good, but they just don't have that crazy depth of flavor and juiciness you would hope for. Is this a good option for dinner if you're in Ballard? Sure! Should you expect top tier BBQ? No :(

Yelp
So we were brought here by some friends that lived in the Seattle area and we were told is was pretty good. AND... It was decent!! I was a bit surprised, but the place is small but its in a very cute little neighborhood so I kinda expected that. The service was great and the staff was very attentive to our table. I got the brisket and the ceasar salad which was pretty good.. It's a pretty standard place. Wasn't Texas brisket, but it was good, wasn't too dry at all and very moist (funny word). They had BBQ sauces from all over the states too, which is cool. P.S. We had some ribs which were very good as well P.S.S. - the baked beans were meh... but the collard greens w/bacon were great! I wish they gave you more!

Yelp
Was trying to find somewhere for dinner on the Ave. Bitterroot had the shortest wait plus immediate seating at the bar, so this was the winner by default. But also because I have heard good things about it. Simmer down. Drinks were good. My date got some sort of mixed drinks that are basically all the same to me. Food was well seasoned, with nice inventive condiment selections. Easily 4 stars. I am dropping it to 3 stars because the pretzel bun concept just doesn't work when the pretzel bun is SO dense and chewy compared to the meat and everything else. My meat was also a little bit too charred. I don't think it was over cooked, but there was that charcoal taste in every bite that I took. You know what I'm talking about. Overall the food was good. Burger was less than perfect, but perhaps it was a one off. I'd go back again to try something else if there weren't so many damn other restaurants that I want to try first on the Ave.

Yelp
The food was absolutely delicious and we got seated quickly. We waited a little long for the food but not horrible. The service was good, just a little slow.

Yelp
I thought Bitterroot was great! The menu had many tasty options, too many to choose! I wanted some mac n cheese, BBQ, and fried goodies...but alas, had to narrow down the choices. I picked pulled-pork as my entrée with slaw, greens, and fries à la carte. Everything was tasty. The pork was tender and cooked just right. Fries were crispy and the collards were good, not mushy. There was plenty of pork to go around and dip into all three BBQ sauces. Even though I love anything spicy, the sweet sauce was my favourite: a twist on the classic created with a base of apples and cola. The spicy sauce had a bit of smokiness as well; it's made with a base of jalapeños and chipotle peppers. The Carolina mustard was sweet and tangy. I have to get back up to Bitterroot and go all out with mac n cheese and more BBQ! Stop by, y'all...you'll enjoy!

Yelp
We really enjoyed our lunch at Bitterroot/Mammoth. We snagged an outdoor table and had the most charming waiter, Ryan. He took great care of us and gave me all the details on their beer selection. Our sandwiches were big (I know what I'm having for lunch tomorrow). But what struck me is how much a great server can change your experience. Ryan was someone who really wanted to make sure we had a great experience. Note to Hattie's Hat and Richmond Hardware: poach this guy. He is extraordinary. Note to Bitterroot: Treat him right.

Yelp
Lovely vibe for a Sunday brunch, a few steps away on a quieter street away from the Farmer's market. Your choice of going healthy with sides or salads (roasted squash was delicious) or hearty with big sandwiches and grilled chicken. Will be coming back for drinks on the patio!

Yelp
Good service, but the bbq was not good. Pork was dry, brisket was tough, and the sauces were over sweetened. On the positive side, we really enjoyed the hush puppies and the carrots.

Yelp
This place was awesome. When we first walked in we were greeted with welcoming smiles and given the option to either dot in the bar or in the general area. We chose the bar, the bartender/ waiter at the bar was the nicest server I have had in a while. Very welcoming, attentive and nice all around. Both me and my friend got the brisket meal which comes with 2 sides. I got the baked beans and the French fries and my friend got the green beans which was seasonal and the corn bread with honey butter. The food came out fairly quickly and the brisket was soft and very flavorful. There was also 4 different sauces you can choose from which was great. Overall we had a great experience and I would definitely come back again!

Yelp
Been wanting to try this place as it's across the street from my gym and always smells awesome. Decided to give in yesterday and was so happy I did! I'm from the south and have been searching for good BBQ in Seattle for years. Seattle BBQ is typically dry and tasteless, but Bitterroot's pork was insanely tender and really good without the sauce! I tried the sweet sauce and it didn't disappoint; however, I only dipped my pork in versus pouring out on the meat. I picked the asparagus and roasted carrots as my sides and they were really good as well! The carrots were better. Will definitely be visiting this place again in the future and glad to finally find a great BBQ spot in Seattle. :)

Yelp
My favorite BBQ in Seattle, and a great place to get some good quality grubbin in. This place has an elevated feel -- but not too fancy where you can't use your hands to eat some meat. Their brunch and dinner menus are equally great and serve many options -- even vegetarian dishes that aren't just salads. The assortment of BBQ sauces available is also great, it really lets you customize your dish to your mood.. and who doesn't love sloppin a good amount of sauce into your fries? The place itself is small, but not in a detrimental way. I would probably not try to bring a large party (8+) here and instead would either order ahead or split into different tables. Overall, this is a great place to take friends or family who are visiting and might say that Seattle is too granola for them -- we have great BBQ too!

Yelp
Was so excited to get barbecue on a summer Friday night and stopped in around 7:30 and didn't have to wait for a table. We ordered the Mac and cheese with pulled pork and sautéed onions ($11-12) which was a huge portion of Mac and cheese. It was delicious but couldn't finish even half of it amongst 2 people. We also ordered the half rack of ribs and got 2 sides: cornbread and cauliflower ($19). The ribs were delicious, it fell off the bone! It doesn't really need additional barbecue sauce but the mustard and sweet barbecue sauce tasted delicious with the ribs. The cornbread and cauliflower were just okay. Overall, it was great service, great experience, and great food that was very shareable and you definitely get your money's worth!
