Petite neighborhood cafe serving breakfast, baked goods, coffee & tea in bright, airy quarters.
"If Cheers was set in a bakery you’d have Black Jet Baking Co. It’s the uber-friendly neighborhood pastry powerhouse in Bernal Heights (we wouldn’t be surprised if the people who worked here knew everybody’s name, too). It’s currently operating as a takeout counter, so check out the rack in the front window full of fresh baked cinnamon rolls, ham and cheese croissants, morning buns, cookies, and homemade Oreos (the menu changes daily). If it’s sunny, pop over for something to snack on before a hike at one of the nearby parks." - julia chen 1, lani conway, ricky rodriguez, patrick wong
"Bernal Heights’s cute corner bakery deals in strong coffee and nostalgic treats. Originally from Worcester, Massachusetts, hardworking baker-owner Gillian Shaw makes old-fashioned yellow and devil’s food cakes, served whole or by the slice, and in cupcake or mini-cupcake form. It’s a fully loaded case, with pecan sticky buns and sour cream coffee cake, plus egg sandwiches on bulkie rolls and even pot pie." - Dianne de Guzman, Becky Duffett, Eater Staff
"Selling a special “I Love LA” cake with proceeds donated to Restaurants Care to assist food and beverage workers affected by the wildfires." - Dianne de Guzman
"Bernal Heights got lucky when Gillian Shaw set up shop in the neighborhood, filling her pastry case with old-fashioned treats. The double chocolate cake has dark devil’s food layers, a rich cream cheese frosting, naked sides, and liberal sprinkles." - Dianne de Guzman, Becky Duffett
"Black Jet Baking Co. is known for pastries, cakes, bread, and more, served during the day at the Bernal Heights bakery. But starting Tuesday, June 25, Black Jet will extend its hours on Tuesdays, hosting a pizza night from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. The inaugural menu features three pizzas: cheese, pepperoni, and a Brentwood corn option, with black pepper and Parmesan. There will also be non-pizza bites, such as baby grinders and tiramisu." - Dianne de Guzman
