Philly’s Best Sushi Restaurants | Eater Philly

"Most of the rolls at Bleu Sushi are named for local places or colleges, like the crispy Temple roll made with spicy yellowtail topped with torched white tuna. The BYOB restaurant in Center City made news when owner Hendra Yong set up a robotic arm to hand orders over to customers in a contactless way during the pandemic. You can order that contactless pickup on Bleu Sushi’s online or make reservations through Yelp." - Maddy Sweitzer-Lamme

Although the outside was a bit sketch, I loved this place so much. We ordered the special sushi boat to share and a mochi for dessert, which were both really tasty. The sashimi in particular was great and the cuts had a layer of fat that made it especially delicious. The staff were a bit slow, but overall were really nice and accomodating to my sister’s request of making the rolls not spicy, since she has a low spice tolerance. Please check this place out!

Google
We went at this little neighborhood gem Japanese restaurant after giving up on another similar one that changed their management or service. We came up home with a great experience with Bleu Sushi ! Besides the great quality & selection of delicious & creative food, we were so pleased with the warm & excellent service of our waitress Angela who went beyond her duties to make our dinner a memorable one ..😋🍸😇. Thanks Angela ! Last but not the least, we had a wonderful & long chat with Vanessa (owner / manager) spanning multiple continents, cultures, life styles, etc..etc.. till closing time! We loved this place and we'll be black many more times to explore the huge creative selection of sushi...and chat again..!😋👌😇👌

Service was impeccable - so attentive and friendly. We ordered chicken teriyaki , rainbow roll & Ben Franklin bluffing roll. The food was OUTSTANDING!!!! It’s a must try while in town

Google
I love this place. The atmosphere is cool and everything I've ordered has been delicious. I always look forward to getting tofu skins as an appetizer! The prices are also quite reasonable so i don't feel guilty ordering an extra roll or two.

Google
Wow, I was pleasantly surprised. The quality of the fish was amazing. The menu did seem overwhelming from all the specials and the lack of a physical menu but everything we got was paired perfectly, all the tastes and flavors blended together beautifully. Our waiter was friendly and gave us great recommendations. I will definitely be back! The ambiance was perfect for a date night.

Google
My experience at Bleu Sushi was an amazing one. I’m not laying it on thick when I say that Jonah and Vanessa made us feel like we were apart the family. Jonah was very attentive, charismatic, and professional. We will definitely be back soon. Thank you Bleu Sushi for setting the best vibe.

Google
I had such a great experience at this restaurant!!!! The staff is very kind, accommodating, and patient. I had to change the time of my reservation for a large party due to traffic and other circumstances not once but twice. The staff member was very accommodating, understanding and worked with me. Not to mention the food is delicious!!! Fried gyoza is a must. The music was also such a vibe! I prefer a paper menu rather than QR code but it really made no difference on the experience. Overall great experience!!!!!

Google
Great food with great happy hour deals. Highlight was having Jonah as our waiter and his fantastic service. Only thing that took away slightly from the experience was EXTREMELY loud people sitting next to us and talking the whole time. Highly recommend.

Yelp
We dined in on a last min reservation on a Thursday evening and had a really wonderful time. Their sushi is so good and is made so quickly, despite a million takeout orders whizzing by you. Don't sleep on the special roll combo that lets you pick 2 rolls and get a soup and salad (which costs less than 2 of the rolls by themselves). The staff was super attentive but not overbearing. For example, one waiter saw my mom plucking ice cubes out of her water to put in her wine, and he eagerly brought over a cup of ice. My previous gripe about only bottled water is now misplaced, as that must have been a covid precaution (props). I think this will be our new celebratory dinner spot, as it's much better than more expensive places and closer to home.

Yelp
It's always a pleasure eating at Blue Sushi. I've enjoyed everything that I've ordered here, but don't sleep on the Kimchee Fries. Those things just hit differently. If you're in the area, it's definitely worth a stop in. If you don't feel like going in and sitting, then give their takeout a shot. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Yelp
Amazing hole in the wall. Got the sushi dinner combo which was 2 special rolls and either a soup or salad. I got the miso soup. The service was really great. Food came out fast. Don't need a reservation can just do walk in. They do take out. The Ben Franklin roll and Bleu Roll are 10/10. Highly reccommend.

Yelp
Had been hearing great things about Bleu for a while, so decided to try it out for lunch. We tried a couple of their signature rolls and a couple classics, and the signatures were definitely the shining stars. Favorites were the Broad Street Roll (Shrimp tempura with yellowtail on top), and Temple Roll (spicy yellowtail topped w black pepper white tuna). Slightly more expensive than other lunch specials in the city, but felt that the quality was high given the price.

Yelp
So many vegetarian options at Bleu Sushi! It's no surprise this restaurant has such great reviews. I placed my order online (versus in store) due to the advertisement about it being cheaper. I received a receipt via e-mail and my order was ready in about 15 minutes. I ordered the Ohio Roll, which has inari and avocado and the Pennsylvania Roll, with sweet potato tempura. Both rolls were outstanding, especially the Ohio Roll! I've never had sushi with tofu in it and it was surprisingly delicious. The ingredients tasted fresh. The soy sauce container was wrapped in cling wrap to prevent spillage. I love that they thought about that being a possibility during travels. Looking forward to trying more veggies rolls here in the future!

Yelp
I ordered the Lunch A takeout special for Restaurant Week. The entire process was smooth and efficient. The shop had pleasing interior. The miso soup was nice and warm, and the kani salad was flavorful. The New York roll and Jefferson rolls were well-prepared, and I especially enjoyed the textural contrast between the crispy shrimp tempura and creamy sauces in the Jefferson roll. The Japanese ice cream was perhaps my favorite part of the meal - it was rich, creamy, and filled little bits of candied ginger. I look forward to visiting for a sit-down meal soon!

Yelp
3.5 Nice. This place has been on my radar for years, and finally had a chance to remember to review it. I opted for two of the Lancaster Rolls, which came with 8 pieces each of some of my favorite - smoked eel, avocado and the sweet Japanese sauce. Service was polite and friendly. About $8 each. Would happily order it again. The downside? The small restaurant was fairly empty, so I gotta admit I was a little annoyed that they placed the next few diners who arrived right next to me. I'm sure they were thrilled that I could eavesdrop and listen in to all the center city drama these 20something city dwellers had with their boyfriends, apartment and jobs. There were quite a few other empty tables scattered throughout the restaurant, so not sure why they had to sit next to me. Conveniently located right by the 9/10th and Locust PATCO stop.

Yelp
Absolutely recommend Bleu. The sushi was amazing and so was the service. We will definitely be coming back! This is a BYOB restaurant btw. There is a beer store (no wine - but plenty of other choices). It's about 1.5 blocks away called The Foodery.

Yelp
My husband and I got takeout from here and were so excited based on all the great things we heard about Bleu. Unfortunately, we were left disappointed with all of our rolls. They lacked flavor and had an odd texture. The order was completed quickly but it doesn't take away from the lackluster flavor and the price.

Yelp
My fiancé and I were looking for something classy in the city to enjoy before drinks at the bar. We were greeted with a lovely atmosphere, quaint and beautiful decor, and upbeat music. Servers are knowledgeable and reliable, and they're quick too! The young man who took our order was helpful and guided us in the direction of rolls we were looking for. The drinks were good, sushi and apps were awesome! Highly recommended!

Yelp
Picking up a Grubhub order as we speak for Bean L. 8 items and the hostess refuses to let me use the restroom. She was very arrogant and rude. She goes "our bathrooms are for the customers only!" The next employee comes out to ask what name I am waiting for, I then say Bean and ask for employees name, he says he doesn't know. It's 30' and feels like 19'. There are plenty of other sushi places in Philly that have respect for others. This is not one of them. STAY AWAY!!

Yelp
I came here with the college kid to treat her to a special night out. We both shared a few maki sushi. The tuna roll was very fresh and flavorful with surprisingly excellent quality of fish. The same for a salmon roll and 2 special rolls whose names I cannot remember. Service was excellent and the dining room was clean and cute. This is a very good place to take a date or celebrate a casual, special occasion. While somewhat expensive, portion sizes are reasonable and prices are competitive with other places in Philadelphia. My only complaint is the lack of street parking and no pay lots in the area; it took me nearly 30 minutes to find an open spot on a late Friday afternoon. Make sure you have a backup plan if you have to give up and go somewhere else due to lack of parking.

Yelp
Love this gem. We made a reservation the day before and am glad we did as this place was packed. The blue themed restaurant was beautiful and very intimate though it was rather noisy given the large crowd for a small place but would be a great date night restaurant during off hours. The food was really good and they offered a huge selection of both sushi and non sushi dishes. Menu choices were all online. We opted for some apps and rolls. Wait staff were attentive and we appreciated that they left a pitcher of ice cold water for the table. We took a Lyft to restaurant so cannot speak to parking though parking in Philly can be a challenge so you may want to consider walking or taking a ride share. Can't wait to come back again on our next trip to Philly.

Yelp
So far, this is one of my favorite sushi spots in the city that doesn't break the bank. I love that this place has so many specialty rolls--there's so many great menu items that it's worth coming back multiple times! Although I haven't tried any of the vegetarian rolls, there are multiple vegetarian options which is really respectable. Every roll I've had here has been delicious but so far my favorite one is the Temple roll. Can't wait to come back and try even more rolls!
google avatar

Yelp
Loved the vibes! Service was great - they always came and refilled our waters it was so nice. The sushi was great too. I got the 2 signature combination rolls and it came with a veryyy delicious miso soup. I wasn't a big fan of the Penn roll but the other shrimp roll was really good! Would def recommend
google avatar

Geraldine U.

Yelp
We ordered takeout from here and really enjoyed our sushi. I love the different combos that they have available. They have so many different rolls it's hard to choose. For the specialty rolls, we ended up getting the Ben Franklin Bluefin and the JFK Boulevard Toro and both were delicious and tasty. The sushi was well constructed. The fish tasted fresh and the serving size was good.

Yelp
Got the job done, I've had spicy tuna done in other locations that were more fresh and spicy. Chicken karaage was not good,

Yelp
Tasty sushi! We visited Bleu Sushi on a Friday night, and it was about half full when we left. The ceiling lighting was dim, and there was a unique blue light emitting from the floor. Jazz music played over the speakers to complete the ambiance. We split the JFK boulevard toro, bleu roll, market street roll, and Villanova roll. All four rolls had an excellent blend of flavors and tasted fresh. Overall, I would recommend Bleu Sushi for dinner in Philly.

Sarah S.

Yelp
Food was good, but the service was really disappointing. After overcharging our group's order, they "fixed" their mistake by refunding the first charge and bringing a new bill that was again wrong. Couldn't help but notice that they'd also taken the time to increase their own tip from the original 20% to 33% - slimey service and safe to say we won't be coming back

Julia B.

Yelp
Ordered delivery- got the shrimp tempura roll (Jefferson roll), california roll, tuna avocado roll (New Jersey roll), and spicy tuna & cucumer roll (Brooklyn roll). Unfortunately, the rolls I received were warm but this could be due to the fact it was delivered. The shrimp tempura roll was excellent! However, the tuna avocado roll was a bit too fishy for my liking. The california roll was just okay. The spicy tuna roll was also rather fishy, and it contained a large amount of filler. Overall, not the best experience, but I will be trying again!

Yelp
Food and service are excellent. Very lovely people and we got dessert on the house. Recommend it!

Yelp
What a treat! From the moment you enter Bleu you are warmly greeted and seated. The server was kind, informative, and offered amazing recommendations. We ordered the 10th Street roll, the Ben Franklin roll, and the Villanova roll (Go Cats!). Each bite of sushi was absolutely perfect. The ambience was elegant and laid-back. This is a must visit whenever you are in the neighborhood!

Yelp
Super nice Restaurant! Great service and food! I know this restaurant been long time and glad to be my neighbor. Manager check us on table as well, cant wait to be back! Thank you Bleu

Yelp
Bleu Sushi should be YOUR GO TO SUSHI SPOT! This place always has the freshest and tastiest sushi. This was the first spot I went to and there has been no other sushi spot that can compare in the past 6 years. Hands down I think this is the best spot in the city. The waiters there are one of the nicest group of people I have met. They make you feel like you are at home. My fave items: Hamachi Jalepeno temple/villanova roll Spicy edamame But everything on the menu that I have had is amazing and everyone else I bring seems to agree. Don't miss out on this GEM

Chris O.

Yelp
Love this place, the sushi is delicious and it has a great vibe. Great staff too! Highly recommend the Ben Franklin roll and JFK blvd roll.

Yelp
This sushi place is quite the place! It's a BYOB small local gem right off of 10th street. We made a reservation and was seated immediately. The staff is super friendly and welcoming and we had the pleasure of meeting the owner or manager. He asked us if we had any questions and took his time to make sure that everything was good. We ordered a lot of different rolls, and the one that stood out to me the most was their JFK Boulevard Toro roll and Villanova roll. The sushi was extremely fresh and tasteful and the rice had the perfect amount of rice vinegar. The sushi came out relatively quick too, considering how busy they were for a friday night. They also gave us complimentary ice cream after our dinner! If you go to this sushi restaurant, please take the time to look over their menu. It's quite extensive, but that just means I have to go more than once to try everything out ;) they have a lot of cool drinks on their menu that's imported from Japan! I didn't order any, but I think the next time I go-- I definitely am going to try a little bit of everything. Highly recommend. 5 stars on service, quality, and how delicious it was!!!
google avatar

Yelp
Only ordered takeout for delivery. Perfect every time. Quick delivery, great customer service, and delicious food arrives hot, well presented, and perfectly prepared, And they have a robot!
google avatar

Tamika B.

Yelp
Bleu Sushi was pleasant with nice customer service. I heard the sushi was good, and people were right! Made reservation and the restaurant is a BYOB. For an appetizer, I tried the not-so-good crab cream croquettes. The taste was not giving what it should have. I also had the "spruce roll" (sweet potato tempura with sweet shrimp) and the "Chicago roll" (crunchy spicy crab and cream cheese). Both sushi rolls were delicious! I tried my friend's sushi that had pesto on it and it was tasty! Bleu Sushi is definitely a good spot to get your sushi fix!
google avatar

Jess M.

Yelp
Perfect date night / dinner with friends spot! Menu is extensive, portions are large, fish is fresh and flavorful, and they're BYOB. Servers are incredibly nice and attentive - they comped us one house salad when they realized 3 out of 4 of us were receiving a salad with our dinner entree and didn't want our fourth friend to be left out! Will definitely be adding this place to our monthly rotation. Thanks Bleu Sushi team!!

Yelp
On 12/27 my daughter & I went out to eat for our now annual end of the year mommy daughter date. She picked the place. We had water to drink. We started with the kimchi fries - it has red and yellow sauce in it. The red sauce it spicy like a mild thicker hot sauce the yellow sauce is sweet. She picked the fries and her preference was the red sauce, she was expecting the sweet taste. The chicken yakitori was my pick for starters- it was very good juicy and flavorful. She also picked the Korean fried chicken - this had a sweet taste to it which she wasn't expecting. I ordered the Jefferson and Chicago rolls and that came with a complimentary soup. The Jefferson had a sweet tone to it and I believe cream cheese. The Chicago had shrimp in it. I'm really not sure which rolls my daughter had because of the pronunciation of it but she finished them, so they must of been good. We both had dessert, her and ice cream and me vanilla Passion Mille-Crepe. Everything was really good. The server was very attentive, he refilled our glasses when they got low, he brought out to go cartons for us and bagged it. The ambiance was very calming, they literally the candles at the table. It was nice and we'd certainly go back.

Yelp
After seeing all the positive reviews (often from people who have never left a review on Yelp previously), I decided to go here the other night. I was on my way there, shortly after 9pm, and decided to give the restaurant a call, just to make sure they were open, even though Apple Maps said they were open until 10pm. The man who answered the phone clarified that they were only open until 9:30pm, despite what Apple Maps said. I show up at 9:13pm, and the door is locked. A man then unlocks the door, asking if he can help me with something. I asked what was going on, and he tells me they are closed. (You can imagine how upset I was.) I said "No, you're not. I just called here 5 minutes ago and was told you are open until 9:30pm." He says, "No. We are closed....unless you just want to order takeout?" I decided to go elsewhere despite how late it was -- in part because I was so irritated and also because it really just looks like a "hole in the wall" sushi restaurant.

Yelp
Had a wonderful experience at Bleu Sushi. They had a ton of veggie sushi options that all sounded delicious. I tried the Pennsylvania Roll and Ohio Roll and was happy I got them! While the rolls were on the smaller side, the flavor was great in them both. The PA roll came out very warm and the tempura inside was fresh and perfectly fried. The OH roll had a lot of avocado in it that was the perfect ripeness. We came with a group of six on a weeknight and were seated right away. The food for the table came out pretty quickly. Our waitress was very friendly and helpful. Note: the restaurant did not provide water in glasses, they only sold water bottles.

Chad G.

Yelp
The food was subpar. Out of all the sushi restaurants in the city it's probably one of the most average if not below average in terms of taste. We went at 8pm, 2 hours before the posted closing time and they started closing up right after we got our food. Even turning the lights up to bright before we had even finished eating at 8:37. It was so annoying to spend that much for the most subpar meal I've had in a long time in Philly combined with awful service. The kicker was an unhoused individual came in to use the restroom, and about 5 employees came out to yell at him and physically push him out of the restaurant. I mean honestly it's Philly you should be able to handle that situation in a better way. You all looked like children. We just about got up and walked away. 0/10 stars. Definitely not going back.

Yelp
What an amazing find on our trip. 4.5 stars. We were craving sushi and Bleu sushi did not disappoint. Fish was fresh. Service was great - our server was very attentive and checked on us frequently. My husband and I got the sake and hamachi sashimi along with a couple rolls and everything was made expertly. I loved that there was minimal rice used for the rolls. It was a couple hours after lunch on a weekday so the restaurant was not busy. No beer or Sake FYI. Otherwise a solid choice for anyone looking for a quaint sushi joint with great quality fish

Yelp
Grab your chopsticks ! What a fun time at Bleu Sushi! The place appealed to us for their generous menu - there's sushi of course but also noodle dishes, various desserts, and even some other surprises! We had taken the drive over and it didn't take too long to find parking. We had made reservations for 8:30pm, so may have just lucked out with parking given our late dinner time. I would recommend plan to circle a little otherwise since the area can be tough with parking. Once inside, the attendants quickly walked us to our table. It's fairly narrow inside and dimly lit but seems manage just fine. There's a full sushi counter in the back for additional seating that provides a show as well. They had beer as their alcoholic option and there's also exotic bottled/canned drinks to choose from - we commend their yuzu drink! For food, we stuck to their sushi offerings which they have plenty of options for vegetarians. We chose their vegetarian platter that comes with 3 rolls, along with an avocado skin roll (my first time having something like this - delicious !) The food came out very quickly and it was delicious and plentiful portion wise! I really liked the avocado skin along with their sweet potato tempura roll. Our waiter was very diligent with taking down our order and making sure all our questions were answered. Of note we also ordered dessert - fried ice cream in their matcha flavor - we both thought it looked better on paper. The texture was chewy and the flavor profile was lost in all the batter. Overall - would recommend for their sushi and may even try their noodle dishes.

Yelp
Perfect dim lit sushi place for date night. BYOB. Love boat is really a must!! We will be back soon A+

Vinita B.

Yelp
Such a great date spot! We came here to celebrate my fiancé getting a recent new job. I picked this place because they have a lot of great vegetarian options that aren't your avg avo rolls. I'm so happy we found it. We got the veggie 3 and the avocado skin rolls. All the rolls were great! We had the fried ice cream for dessert and also the green tea. The fried ice cream was okay. I have had better but it was a nice way to celebrate still. The ambiance is also nice for the price. It's a pretty low-medium range place in terms of price, but there is still some blue mood lighting and a display of vases. The place doesn't have a big drinks selection but we tried the pear juice which was cool. We will definitely be going back soon!
google avatar

Brandi R.

Yelp
Nice, cozy sushi spot downtown. I ordered a shrimp tempura roll. It was pretty good (just a tad too much avocado for me). My friend ordered the Jefferson roll and loved it. We shared the shrimp potato roll. A neat concept but could probably benefit from better execution.
google avatar

Casey N.

Yelp
Spent Valentine's day here and I got to say this is a really great spot; from the fresh sushi, the blue intimate ambiance, and the reasonable prices! Not to also mention it's BYOB this is a great date night spot. The restaurant is quite small though so I suggest making a reservation. They had many things to choose from the menu, so if you don't like raw fish you can still enjoy yourself here. We didn't try anything outside the sushi though so I can't vouch for those items. Overall, would definitely come back again!

Amber Z.

Yelp
The food was incredible - I ordered a shrimp tempera roll, miso soup, and another roll (I forget). The service was hands down 10/10... they care so much about their customers and asked questions about us instead of ignoring us. The ambiance is dark, but you feel as thought you are in an Asian calm space. So it is worth it

Yelp
You walk in and immediately the host/waiter asks you for your vaccine card. Showed my photo and literally zoomed on it like I was a fraud. I didn't like that. Ambiance: dark, seatings were too small. Food: you order by scanning the QR code and since they have many options, you have to constantly scroll up and down while the waiter is waiting for you to order. The taste is pretty regular to me, nothing out of the ordinary. If anything, most of them taste almost the same. Price: it's sushi, what'd ya expect? Service: Beside zooming on my phone, this is why this place received a 3 star. We decided to order their "fried ice cream" and it was the worst decision we made that night. First of all, they gave us these miniature tiny tea spoons(could've sworn they were made out of plastic) and check this out, when we tried to scoop through the ice cream it was extremely hard that it almost broke those poor little spoons. When we tasted the ice cream, it wasn't creamy, rather it had a freezer burn taste to it. I told the waiter about it and without an ounce of acknowledgment of the customer's experience, he said "thats our style, that how we make it" repeatedly. With that being said, i would not be back to this place and do not and will not recommend.

Yelp
One of my closest friends was in town for business and I was tasked with finding a good sushi place in my new home city. Unable to secure reservations at Tomo, I decided upon Bleu Sushi. Upon entering, the restaurant was quaint and not too crowded. We were all set to begin with some hot sake. To our dismay this was a BYOB restaurant and we clearly missed the memo! Ugh! We started with edamame and vegetable gyoza. The gyoza was just meh. Not much on flavor and a bit mushy. I opted for the sweet potato roll as it was my only vegan option. Again, just meh. The portions were robust and the customer service was superb. Unfortunately, the food wasn't too impressive.

Troy O.

Yelp
Server would not let us get happy hour items despite it being within the time frame. Horrible customer service and the food was mediocre at best. I advise not going here if you're looking for sushi.
google avatar

Eileen G.

Yelp
Excellent! Small and quaint. Service was pleasant. We look forward to going again. Try their spider roll it's delicious.
google avatar

Yelp
Really good sushi, big selection and nice size pieces. I really enjoy coming here for the atmosphere, service and good quality sushi.
google avatar

Dustin W.

Yelp
Sushi and sashimi were great. Some of the rice on the rolls weren't the best but still solid. Not bad sushi and pretty reasonably priced. Kimchi fries were not what I expected. Maybe 2 tiny pieces of real kimchi and mainly just dressing on the fries. Not worth the $4. The manager? waiter? Was nice in helping us order and recommending to get the lunch special since we were ordering rolls and it would be cheaper that way. Biggest downside was NO WATER?! You had to either buy their Voss water or bottled drinks/alcohol that were all like $4. They don't provide tap water... I would recommend sticking to the sushi as they do a great job with the presentation of food and the sushi taste is solid. Definitely not the best sushi I've had but decent. Food: 4/5 Ambience: 4/5 Service: 5/5

Yelp
Absolutely loved our experience at Bleu Sushi. The staff so sweet and accommodating. Service was also very fast. We got 2 lunch specials- 1 was $12.95 and included 2 regular rolls and a soup or salad. The other special was $32.95 and includes 2 signature rolls and a soup/salad. We got the Alaska roll, Harrisburg Roll, Ben Franklin Bluefin roll and the Bleu Roll. Portions were large and ingredients were fresh! Cannot say enough good things!

Vava K.

Yelp
Great for a big party. We all got complimentary Voss water and great service! Sushi was also great
