I made reservations for a party of 2 and I was seated promptly when I arrived at 11am on a Sunday morning. I liked the ambiance inside. It was clean, a little floral, but elegant without going into grandma cottage territory. I was greeted by the waitress who was very nice. I was happy to be seated as I waited for my cousin to arrive later. She reviewed and explained the menu to me. The brunch menu was a compact, BUT FOCUSED menu. I was glad to see that because I know a lot of Asian places try to do too much and it ends up being sort of an upscale HK cafe situation, which I don't care for unless I go to an actual HK cafe (not at these prices).
I was a little skeptical of their cocktails because they are usually afterthoughts for a place that is focused on the food. Since they had a pretty bar and I liked the fact that they actually used Asian liquors like KaoLiang for the base of their drinks, I decided to give it a try.
We ordered 4 items off of the menu thinking the portions would be small, but they were pretty big! Yes, it's not cheap, but the portions aren't small. Everything was plated nicely.
We ordered:
(1) Tonkatsu Shrimp Salad - it was all about the Shrimp. They were big, crispy, and the mix of greens were pretty standard. My cousin liked the dressing. I should have tried it. We finished the salad, trying to be healthy and all.
(2) Steak and Eggs - we asked for medium and it came medium on a sizzling platter. My cousin enjoyed the steak sauce (douban, pepper, and some other spices). I enjoyed the steak by itself. It was flavorful and the cut was just the right thickness. It had a great amount of fat to meat ratio so no parts or bits were left on the plate. It came with brocolini and some pasta, which we skipped. It was also accompanied by a deep fried battered bean sprout cake, which my cousin loved (reminded me of pajeon).
(3) Beef Orzo - this was super tasty! It was the favorite out of the 4 items. Orzo was cooked al dente and the beef was tender. Overall, it was tossed perfectly.
(4) Sesame chicken Risotto - this came out and turned into the consistency of almost rice porridge so I'm thinking they are doing a very Asian take on risotto? It was seasoned perfectly. The sesame came through and the chicken was tender.
Overall, we enjoyed the dishes. There were some execution issues, but everything was seasoned perfectly. Nothing was overly salty or bland. The proteins were still tender and nothing was dry or offensively inedible. My cousin and I will return. No it's not cheap, but it's also not wallet shattering like other restaurants with smaller portions at these prices.
As for the cocktails, I had the Lady Camelia, Moonlight Bloom, and the Winter Melon High Ball. They were all smooth and yes the alcohol was definitely there as my cousin sampled each and felt it was too strong. She enjoyed her Magpie Sangria though. It's a sweeter drink for the girlies out there and they decorated each cocktail so nicely. I enjoyed all of my cocktails but my favorite was the LC because it was floral and pretty tasting. The other two were pretty good.
Service was a slow since they were busy on a Sunday afternoon and only had 2 servers (also playing hostess too), but both of the lovely ladies were always nice and refilled out water glasses without us having to ask.
I will return to try their fried chicken sandwich next time!
