LAX tries to make airport food appealing by bringing in a bunch of celebrity chef chains into the mix of dining options. Border Grill represents just that: chef-driven, modern Mexican cuisine with a well-known brand! Might sound good, but in terms of execution, this was nothing more than vastly overpriced airport food that came with inattentive, slow service.
First from the menu, I tried the Border Tostada Salad, a tossed mixture of romaine, black beans, cotija cheese, grilled poblano chile, charred corn, crema, salsa, and tortilla strips, all topped with guacamole and served over a tostada. Not bad flavorwise, but the portion was rather tiny for the price.
Next, I had the Yucatán pork burrito, which came with flavorful marinated smoky, juicy pork, along with black beans, cheese, crema, arbol sauce, and cabbage slaw, all rolled into a flour tortilla and grilled. The burrito too was quite tasty, especially with the texture of the caramelized tortilla shell, but again it was hard to justify the price of the relatively small morsel.
Get food here if you must (it's still better than many other options at LAX after all), but don't expect nearly the same level of experience, service, or value you'd expect at another location of Border Grill. After all, it's still airport food.
