Where to Eat Some of the Best Red Beans and Rice in New Orleans

"Run by two New Orleans natives, Paul and Olivia Artigues, Breakaway’s is a new spot serving New Orleans staples: gumbo, crawfish etouffee, and fried shrimp, as well as some vegan versions, and a small menu of sno-ball cocktails. The red beans and rice are just excellent, served with chaurice sausage for $12, local-made tofu, or fried Louisiana shrimp." - Eater Staff

New Orleans’s Best Old-School Burgers

"There is so much to love about chef Paul Artigues’ menu at Breakaway’s R&B, from the crisp wedge salad to the fluffy crawfish fritters and the etouffee. But the Reme double burger is divine, two quarter pounders on a Brioche bun with grilled onions, American cheese, and tangy remoulade Sauce. Great news — it comes with herb and garlic-powered persillade fries." - Beth D'Addono, Clair Lorell

Where to Eat in Faubourg Marigny

"At this no-frills neighborhood joint, Paul and Olivia Artigues are serving New Orleans staples like gumbo, a beef daube sandwich, crawfish etouffee, fried shrimp, and white beans with ham hock — as well as a number of vegan versions of New Orleans classics. The small menu of sno-ball cocktails is especially fun: the Green Goblin, made with absinthe, orange liqueur, and lime over shaved ice; the Pretty Baby with nectar cream and vodka; a mint julep; and a sno-ball version of Cafe Brulot, a cocktail normally made by lighting cognac on fire. Blessedly, Breakaway’s serves food until late." - Beth D'Addono, Clair Lorell

Where to Eat and Drink in and Around the French Quarter on Mardi Gras

"This Marigny newcomer is right on the path of the Ninth Ward procession to the French Quarter on Fat Tuesday, so luckily the corner bar (formerly Lost Love Lounge, a Mardi Gras day standby) will be open and serving drinks and food, from 8 a.m. til sundown." - Clair Lorell

Google
We actually have a place in New Orleans just a few blocks away from Breakaway's. We've lived in the area for over three years and somehow never discovered this astonishing place right under our noses. The Green Goddess salad was the best I've ever eaten of that salad. The food was half the price of fare at fine dining. The drinks were stupendously generous and superbly made. The chef, a wonderfully happy guy, happy to interact. The bartender/waitress, bountiful in knowledge and wonderful personality. The old movies playing with caption, the musician filling the area with beautiful music. This is an exceptional find. Value that defies belief. Quality and deeply enjoyable food, drink, atmosphere and service. This is what New Orleans is. This is why New Orleans is. Absolutely special, memorable and top notch experience.

This may be my new favorite place. Food is great and tasty. Needs a bit of an update though and a good wash down. Prices are great. And perhaps let's leave the dogs at home and staff shouldn't pet them for sure.

Google
Great addition to the neighborhood with a mix of vegetarian and traditional offerings, topped with friendly service. The fried green tomatoes are the best I’ve had (and as someone who lives in New Orleans and doesn’t eat animal flesh, I’ve had a lot of fried green tomatoes!). I had them as a special salad and apparently you can get them on a burger as well.

We ate here for the first time today - amazing food and can’t wait to come back. Recommend the mushroom fritters, the citrus salad, and the avocado sammy. Also the nicest people!!!!

Google
Ok honestly, I don't know how this place has bad reviews. It's AMAZING!! The food is phenomenal - we had the debris & cheese fries, crawfish fritters, and sausage & chicken gumbo. Everything was phenomenal. I'm literally only here for 2 days and trying to think how I can fit in a second visit! We both had Snow Blitz - basically a snow cone with booze! I had the goblin one and my friend had the pretty one, both excellent! The only reason I didn't finish mine is because it was delightfully strong and I could feel the hangover coming over my SSRIS! 🤣 The service was great and they were very personable - especially considering we're very obviously not from NOLA lol Felt right at home! The ambiance was really cute with old movies and a fun vibe. They also have a gender neutral bathroom which is lovely!

Beneath the veneer of an unassuming corner bar, Breakaway's packs some of the best Cajun food I've had--ever. The étouffée is good enough to slap someone's mama. Seriously. Staff is warm and the drinks are cold. What more could you ask for?

Google
Went two times in two days with my husband. We loved it. The food was very good and I really loved that they had many vegan options. Its great to get a late vegan meal. The cook brings out the food himself (and that really fast) which we really liked. definitely will come back - keep it up!

Google
A very simple menu but everything is delicious. The salads are amazing. My fried shrimp and my partner's gumbo were fabulous. Our friends who are big fans of the place had vegetarian sandwiches that just looked fantastic. And snowball cocktails! Definitely recommend and will definitely be back.

Yelp
Idk if I just went on the wrong day but the service was horrible. The bartender was serving us and the people at the bar while her fellow employee sat and chatted with other guests at their table. I'm vegan so I frequently expect some places to not care too much about our preferences. However since I came on yelp and read good reviews I thought to give it a chance. Bad idea. I should've just skipped out on this late night meal and had water. Mushroom fritters 1/10 very chewy. Flavorless. And mostly batter. Yaki mein tasted like a canned tomato soup with no seasoning. Po boy was ok. 3/10. Overall just disappointed I had to wait so long and pay $50 for horrible food. So highly would not recommend this place if you're vegan. Sorry not sorry.

Yelp
Kind of a dive bar vibe over here, which surprised me a bit given that this apparently shares heritage with the departed Green Goddess. I didn't have much time, but I couldn't leave the city having discovered that such a thing as red bean falafel exists without trying it. Every time I see a butterbean hummus or a black eyed pea fritter, I wonder why more isn't done with beans. So I got some takeout. The mouthwatering smell of a red bean falafel undersells its hearty, savory, and salty taste. And it really seemed like more salt than was needed, with some crusted on top; it's not like the flavor was lacking otherwise. The platter was quite splendid over all, with a smear of hummus and an array of beets and salad freshening up my fried bean paste. A citrus salad delivered the promised mix of flavors. I was happy to have found a vegetarian- and vegan-friendly place with some distinctive options. The price was high for what it was, and of course the restaurant scene here is brutal. I could imagine some things being better, but the taste of my food was certainly worthy of returning here if I get the chance.

Yelp
Breakaway's is Paul Artigues newest adventure in New Orleans. We adored the grungy Green Goddess, formerly located on Exchange Place, with its worldly menu and crunchy green salads. This concept is different. While there are faint echos of Goddess, this spot, located on Dauphine, focuses more on Paul's roots and his grandmother's Cajun recipes. I had the potato salad and chicken and sausage gumbo. My husband and a friend split the red beans and rice and the falafel po boy. Everything tasted great, but I think the po boy was my favorite. The falafel was flavorful and crispy and the pickled veggies were crunchy, delicious, and refreshing. There are several types of sandwiches and Cajun dishes, including the rich and meaty daube (roasted chick) dishes. I'm not totally sold on the sno-cone cocktails, but I would try them again. The absinthe one was pretty strong. Service is solid and Paul came out to personally check that we were enjoying our meal. This isn't quite like our Green Goddess, but Paul is talented, and we would follow him anywhere.

Yelp
Just discovered this place, and I'm mad that I didn't try it sooner! They have several vegan options, including a greens gumbo that is one of the best gumbos I've ever had, vegan or no. It's a cute little place, and the music is bangin! The servers were great. The vegan yaka mein didn't have a ton of flavor but was fine. The vegan red beans were good, as were the mushroom fritters (albeit a little chewy).

Yelp
Dive bar with food. We came on a Saturday night and it was pretty empty at the bar and the restaurant. Had a few beers at the bar, bartender was nice but not much personality. Meandered to the back to eat. Lots of vegetarian options which is great. I went with the tofu poboy. It was ok but really dry came with a mountain of fries which seemed sort of steamed and soggy. The salads were good. One thing I will mention is the bathroom in the back dining room looked like it hadn't been cleaned in a while. Floor was covered in dirt and so was the sink which then makes me hope this doesn't reflect on the cleanliness of the kitchen as well.

Yelp
The food was amazing!!! I will be back again. The staff was so informative and friendly and constantly checking in with you. I loved the dive bar feel gave more of a I'm in New Orleans feel. At the end of the night ended up recommending the place to a couple walking by that was curiously looking it. Totally worth it!! I've been waiting for the Cajun New Orleans Taste, this place delivered!

Yelp
Awesome. Huge space (formerly Lost Love Lounge), cutely decorated. Everyone in my group was gah-gah over their food. Mushroom fritters, crawfish, salads. We all had sno ball drinks and we LOVED them. I had absinthe... yum. I will be a regular here for sure.

Yelp
Pretty bomb meal. Took some convincing to get my sister to actually sit down and eat there... it looks super divey, but Paul still delivers a mean feast to your favorite punk rock soundtrack. I will be back.

Yelp
I returned to Breakaways in less than a week after my first visit and I bought two friends. My love for this place is strong. It was the night of Krewe Du Vieux and we knew that getting food before parade libations was crucial (last week made the amateur mistake of waiting until after Chewbaucchus and found ourselves eating tater tots at a bar at 1 am. Not. Cool.) This time I ordered the avocado and vegan cheese sandwich with fries. This will definitely be my go-to in warmer months when I want something lighter than beans and rice. It comes on fresh, nutty + chewy whole grain bread and is just perfect with creamy avocado/aioli and a tangy housemade vegan cheese (no processed slices here). Fries are also incredible with a slight garlic and herb dressing. Also, everyone here is just SO nice and welcoming. It's really the new treasure of the neighborhood. And I can't wait to indulge in one of those boozy sno-balls when the time is right.

Yelp
Great vegetarian options, inc a great green gumbo, happy to see the owners have a new place again (loved their old place in the Quarter!).

Yelp
So to start off THIS IS A DIVE BAR so do with that what you will but... the service was top tier and the food was recommended was the daube anything and the shrimp because it's fresh!! Which it was I got the daube fries which was prefect the fries are literally prefect if you are not a crunchy fry Stan but I wouldn't say soggy more like soft fries and weeeeellllllll seasoned shrimp was great I like my greens and the carrot coleslaw over the salad with a light vinaigrette was super tasty now if I had Parmesan over the top it would've took it to the next level but it's still great as is. Definitely a must go too!

Yelp
I brought a group here to try this place out hoping to find another food spot in the area. I ordered the Daube poboy and it was a disappointment. The meat was too shredded for me though the bread was great. My other friends really enjoyed their food. The chef sent us out a free dessert which was delicious. We will be back to give it another try.

Yelp
Great Food and Beer, also naturally New Orleans Neighborhood Ambiance. Been Refreshing and enjoying Delicious Soul Food and neighborhood connections since 1975. Chef Patrick

Yelp
We wanted to try a new place and was not disappointed. The service and food were great. Our waiter, Matt was awesome. Very friendly and gave great advice on what to order. The food is delicious. Another highlight was Paul, the owner came out and made sure everything was good. After chatting with him, we found out he was the owner of the Green Goddess in the French Quarter. Know I know why the food is sooo good. Breakaways is located in the Marigny. So easy access, plenty of parking. We will DEFINITELY be back. Give them a try. You won't regret it. Richie, an exited new customer

Yelp
The food was good and the portions were a good size. Their snowball cocktails are kinda bullshit though, the pics they have on their social media make them decently sized but I got a pretty baby and it was served in a 6oz glass that wasn't even filled up all the way, for $10... It just tasted like boozy milk. I really wanted to like this place because I loved green goddess but it's pretty meh. It doesn't feel like a restaurant and it doesn't feel like a bar, just kinda like cheap event hall vibes. There are cheaper options for the same quality and type of food.

Leslie L.

Yelp
We stayed in a short-term rental near this place, and walked over for dinner on my birthday. Wow. I had the chicken-and-sausage gumbo with the smoked chicken salad, and my husband ordered daube on pasta. All of it was wonderful; the daube beef was extraordinarily tender and flavorful; the gumbo was seasoned perfectly; and the chicken salad was so good I wanted to figure out how make it at home. Dessert - because: birthday! - was one order to split of the Coco Calas, fresh, hot beignets served on chocolate ganache. The huge portion of Coco Calas was more than enough for the two of us to share. Even including a cocktail, the dinner was extremely reasonable. Great service, too. A+.

Yelp
This has quickly become my favorite neighborhood place to grab a delicious and heart-felt meal, or a delicious cocktail at a reasonable price. A piece of advice: alway get the specials! The specials are delicious, creative and amazing! The gumbo is my comfort food. The salads are wonderful, as is the shrimp po'boy (fresh local shrimp from Chalmette). The best part is the staff. They always check in- including the chef- to make sure everything is positive for guests. They play amazing funky video compilations in the bar that add to the vibes. I LOVE BREAKAWAYS!

Caleb S.

Yelp
Nice little dive with great food and vegan options! Our first stop when we got to NoLa, and probably the best stop all trip.

Yelp
Wandered in for a drink but saw the food menu looked better than average bar food so decided to eat too, and oh hell yeah this food is not your average bar food. The green goddess salad. Could have had it as my meal and been happy. The shrimp clemenceau. Could eat it every day. My husband got the beef daube pasta and he also went wild over his food. Chef and bartender were super nice. And the drinks were good too. Honestly can't say enough good things about this place.

Frank G.

Yelp
The debris poboy was loaded with tender well seasoned roast beef. The gravy is thick and juicy. It was very satisfying. The house fries are crispy with a really nice touch of garlic. The smell is as good as the taste. The location is laid back. Good sized bar with dining room and kitchen in the back. Great place to drop in for some food and cocktails. Hits on all cylinders for me. Adding this place to my quick go to spots.

Lala V.

Yelp
Great bar and restaurant. I liked their place in the Quarter a lot and was happy to see them open a new spot after the quarter spot closed. Food is great - I've tried about half the menu and everything has been excellent. Especially like the fries, crawfish fritters, hamburger po boy, shrimp specials, and the green goddess wedge. The dessert, coconut bananas foster, has an amazing homemade coconut sorbet. Worth a visit alone for the sorbet. Drinks are also good - strong pours.

Al P.

Yelp
I came here for tasty late night food New Orleans food..one of the few places that has great veg options and stays open later than most places! Can't wait to try out their brunch :-)

Catie R.

Yelp
This place is such a hidden gem! Everything is so fresh and high quality. I try something new every time I come and everything has been amazing. Everything from the salads to the fried shrimp to the dessert is 5 stars. Our waitress was so nice! Great service. Must try!

Grace R.

Yelp
Amazing!! The wedge salad is the best I've ever had. You can't go wrong with anything here - portions are generous. Definitely try the special, it's always so good.

Kris R.

Yelp
What a wonderful culinary experience! Much thought and many years of experience has gone into the two specials you have to look for. And I'm going to leave it at that, as you've got to find it for yourself. Experienced and capable mixologist to make your favorite cocktails, friendly attentive staff will leave you wanting nothing. It's a must try in New Orleans.

Cynthia H.

Yelp
I got the vegan pho boy and enjoyed it a lot. The space is a little basic although it was right down the street from the inn we stayed at.

John R.

Yelp
The food here is outstanding. service is great too. Got the crawfish fritters and sautéed shrimp plate. Everything was amazing! We shared the fried green tomatoes and fries. This is my second trip here with a large group and everyone loved what they got. Five Stars!

Yelp
weird vibes and the female bartender with short brown hair was incredibly rude to all people in our party of 5. food runner was nice and the food was decent.
