Best Restaurants in Marin County | Eater SF

"Baker Celine Underwood’s passion for sourdough helped kick Marin’s bread renaissance into high gear. Wood-fired, naturally fermented, and often whole grain, the breads are an expression of West Marin’s flavors. Baguettes and espresso drinks with made-in-house syrups are hot sellers best enjoyed in the cute patio garden. Breads sell out quickly and some, such as the Khorasan miche, are only available on Saturdays or specific days of the week." - Christina Mueller

This is a MUST when in Point Reyes!!!! One of the best bakeries l've been too! It can get crowded, but the line moves fast. Everything is on point, from the coffee to the pastries to the bread, I can't say enough good things. Service so friendly and welcoming, and they have daily specials of breads and scones etc. they have a nice hug garden out back to sit and enjoy your foods, but inside is just the counter where you order and you can see the kitchen as well which is cool. You have to get the sesame cookies!!!!! Also the focaccia is incredible I'm so sad I only got one piece. The whipped cream in the coffee is so good as well. I've gone here multiple times and each time leaves me craving more!!!!! If you go to Toby's fees barn, you'll also see some of this bakery items by the checkout area as well!

We came here 3x during our 4 day mini vacay. Really loved everything we had (quiche, sweet and savory scones, olive oil cake, almond croissant 🥐-though I would have liked more almond paste but it was oh so flakey). Service by very sweet smiling souls. One kind woman took the time to explain how they make their own apricot seed extract and let us smell the amazing stuff! The July garden was bountifully blooming and so gorgeous with birds and bees. Quiet and peaceful. Will def return and highly recommend.

Google
Loved the sourdough toast topped with goat cheese and cream cheese—simple, fresh, and delicious. The ambience was equally wonderful, with beautiful garden seating that made for a relaxing and enjoyable experience. A lovely spot to unwind with great food.

Google
Pastries here are a cut above bovine bakery. We got the nectarine danish, almond croissant, and chocolate chip cookie. The danish and croissant were both perfectly flaky and crumbly, we sat outside in the beautiful garden surrounded by butterflies and bees.

Took a coffee and sandwich pitstop mid bike ride. They have a bike rack in-front and you can take your food into the backyard garden. The setting is beautiful, you’ll be surrounded by flowers and herbs. The bread tasted good, wish it had more filling. Coffee was regular, would not order again.

You can park across the street. Although it’s busy on weekends, the line moves quickly. They sell a wide variety of pastries, bread, coffee and tea. You place your order at the counter, and the staff will pack it up for you. For drinks, you pick them up at the adjacent pickup window. The semi-open outdoor area is lovely and filled with flowers and plants, offering a couple cozy garden seats, perfect for sitting down and enjoying your treats-truly delightful. We ordered a ham & cheese sandwich - bread was hard but very flavorful. Double chocolate brownie was sweet and rich, with a dense texture that paired well with drip coffee, balancing the sweetness. The sweet tart with apricot had a crispy and delicious crust. We love this local bakery.

Google
Nice little bakery. I stopped as I was heading out of town to pick up a few pastries. I got a Strawberry Poppyseed Scone, Toasted Almond Meringue, and a Cinnamon Croissant. The Croissant was especially yummy warmed up. They have all types of sweet and savory items. Quiche, sandwiches, crackers, biscotti, brownies, cookies, just all types of good looking treats. I'd be coming back regularly if I lived in the area.

Google
Small shop with lots of good bread! We bought a loaf, went to the market and bought some cheese and just had a picnic outside on a picnic table. The bread was still warm as we ate it, around 10am. Note, they do not sell breakfast sandwiches, though they do have pastries and coffee for the mornings.

Yelp
Brickmaiden Breads is a must-visit when you're in Point Reyes Station. This cozy bakery features an outdoor area with plenty of seating, a nice spot for enjoying your bakery items and coffee. Note: it's standing room only inside: so take away or eat outside in the garden. There's usually a line on weekends (and they close early) but it's always worth the wait. The fruit and shortbread cookies & their granola are delicious, as are the pastries. We try to grab the cheese-filled country loaf to take home, which makes a terrific savory toast -- definitely a favorite every time we stop by.

Yelp
We stopped by this wonderful bakery before checking out the rest of the Point Reyes Station area. There was a line out the door which was a great sign. They had a wide variety of fresh baked breads, pastries and cookies that are baked on site. My husband had a slice of quiche and a cup of coffee. I decided on the spinach mushroom cheese croissant. We also bought two different loaves of bread, biscotti, cookies and crackers to take home. They had everything displayed so nicely and packaged neatly. We asked if there was a restroom we could use, and they said they didn't have a restroom. I thought that was strange for an establishment that serves food and drinks. They did however tell us where there were public bathrooms close by behind the grocery store about a block up the street. Both the quiche and savory croissant were delicious. We will try the rest of our goodies over the next few days. It's definitely worth stopping here if you are in the area. They do have some seating outside but that's it.

Yelp
Absolutely amazing from the service to the breads, pastries, and coffee!! Iced mocha with homemade whip was the best I've had in a while, perfect balance of espresso and chocolate. Their bread is very good. We had the tartine with smoked mozzarella and the mozzarella tomato sandwich, perfect!! Also you cannot miss their cookies, they are the best!! It's a small space inside but plenty of space outside to sit, including the beautiful garden in the back.

Yelp
Giving this place five stars because of the yummy pastries. But not just because of the pastries -- This place was so cute and it has a little backyard patio situation giving cottage core vibes. I felt like I was transported into a fairytale cottage. If you're visiting point, Reyes would definitely recommend stopping by here for some quick bites or breakfast!

Yelp
The line out front moved quickly so I figured that this bakery has to be good . Then once inside it's easy to understand why folks wait. We sampled the seeded baguette which was delicious, a spelt cookie that my hubby gobbled up before I was able to snap a pic and a plum meringue. All, so good! Next time will enjoy some of their teas/ coffees as well as other sourdough offerings. The ambience is welcoming. Folks working here are super helpful and kind.

Yelp
This was a small charming bakery / coffee shop. It's small but mighty with what they offer. I forgot what exact toast I got but it was divine! So yummy!! Our Coffee was also great. The staff were also incredibly sweet and helpful. If I were to be back in this area , I would definitely come back.

Yelp
I got the following peach streusel, ficelle sandwich, and (not pictured) Bergamont and Rose snickerdoodle, as well as as Rye-Chatta latte with oat milk. Everything tasted so fresh and delicious. The ingredients are so rich. Great service and beautiful interior as well as their outside garden. Would love to come back again the next morning to try their other products ! See their website or check out any signs in store about their pop-up events. They even have pop-up barbecue. EDIT: went back the next day for the Farmers market. Once again the pastries did not disappoint. Got the almond cake--highly recommend! So divine! They also had a pop-up BBQ with brisket and a side of coleslaw and delicious bread. I made a sandwich out of it. Best I've had in a long time!

Yelp
The food is was top notch especially the on house carbs both savory & sweet. The meringue muffin with hazelnuts, orange , etc. was excellent. Sales service was good & they were helpful in explaining what we were eating. The ambiance was delightful. There is no indoors seating but there are a bunch of scattered tables in the back garden with a large separate eating area as well. I highly recommend it if you are in Point Reyes station. Particularly because my daughter-in-law does much of the pastry prep.

Yelp
Oh my gosh, talk about a darling atmosphere!!!!! The garden area is NOT wheelchair friendly but they do have a wheelchair ramp into the store and a lovely, big table with chairs. The woman who served me is super duper kind (beautiful, gray hair) and helpful getting me everything I ordered. The meringue (cherry & chocolate) are super delish! I had never had one and needed to go back for two more before I left the area. The mocha was.... underwhelming. The espresso was crafted beautifully, but zero chocolate flavoring at all. Alternative milk prices were high, unfortunately. Their quiche is also wonderful. Everyone was very, very kind. I do wish there is a way for handicap folks to enjoy the Secret Garden-Esque garden area, but definitely not accessible to anyone in a wheelchair.

Yelp
"A Perfectly fine iced coffee" - a hard to please coffee snob. Good scone too. The original plan was to go to Toby's for a coffee, but after seeing some local cyclists come here instead this seemed like the wiser option. I'm happy about the last minute change of plans and will stop here again next time I'm in town.
google avatar

Michael M.

Yelp
Their breads and pastries are soooo good we travel an hour to get them. Pay no attention the drive there is beautiful and it's in a lovely town.

Gwen M.

Yelp
They make such tasty baked goods, pastries, and coffee at an affordable price. Love their outdoor garden venue, plus their service can't be beat. If you're visiting point Reyes you have to stop here.

Susan E.

Yelp
We like to purchase local artisan breads as we travel. Yesterday we bought a sesame wheat levain loaf. This could very well be the best bread ever. Fresh, chewy, with a clean wheat taste and perfectly toasted sesame seeds on top. Thank you Brickmaidens!! Cafe is very cute with peaceful outdoor area. Breakfast offerings were varied. I recommend trying.

Yelp
TLDR: Go here, not there. Highly recommend the ginger scones. Check out their rotating Sunday pop up events on the gram. Don't let the name fool you - they have more than just bread. Extensive menu including delicious pastries and handy to-go items in the pantry fridge. Friendly and helpful staff. Their items are seasonal and often come from the patio garden so always changing.

Yelp
Great bakery. People crowd into small, rustic place in charming Pt. Reyes Station. Their reputation is evidenced by the busy spot. Staff is busy but very nice. Go early before they run out .

Tim R.

Yelp
Incredible baked goods! The deep dish quiche was delicious. The made to order coffees were fantastic. The staff were very friendly and greeted us with a smile even when they were very busy. The garden is beautiful! We sat back by the water feature. We will be back!

Yelp
My boyfriend ordered a scone and according to him, it was good. My issue was with a tall older gentleman who was packing the van. I don't know if he was the owner or not. But we overheard him loudly proclaim to the younger cashier, "don't you just want to punch someone when people talk to you that way." Even if our country wasn't going through particularly divisive, often verbally and/or physically violent times, the comment remains startling and exceptionally unprofessional. We were shocked that he would say this within earshot of several customers and to be honest, that he'd say this at all. As someone who has worked in service, I know customers can be hard to navigate; but to use violent rhetoric...there are so many ways to express frustration that don't compromise safety. I've been coming to Point Reyes since I was a child -- I will continue to get pastries from Bovine around the corner.
google avatar

Shirley L.

Yelp
I indulge in the simple yet delicious plain croissant at this newly established pastry shop. The line was long but went by quickly. It seemed their menu changed weekly.

Paul R.

Yelp
Brickmaiden has - for many years - existed as a (mostly) hidden treasure out in West Marin. And I have long regarded the Sesame Wheat Batard as a memorable product. I know of no other bakery that offers this distinctive bread. The breads, pastries, muffins, etc, are on the expensive side. Still, demand does not seem to suffer. If you shop for Brickmaiden products at local farmer's markets, or at a limited number of groceries in West Marin, you find that most everything often disappears by late morning. Brickmaiden actually offers range of specialty breads and pastries, but if you want to sample a range of their products, you have to go to the appropriate FM or the bakery itself in Pt. Reyes Station - and you will need to pre-order from the weekly menu. That way you can sample a variety quiches, muffins, scones, pastries, ficelles, etc., and then decide if the purchase of the Bakery products merits the extra effort. Nb A recent review (from 08/24) provides critical commentary about the bakery staff. Still, over the course of many contacts, my recall is of friendly, courteous service.

Yelp
Eating a couple scones in a garden with hummingbirds and bees? Yes, please! Blink and you'll miss Brickmaiden Breads. Nestled between a cheese shop and a clothing store, here is a cheery bakery offering freshly-made pastries and breads. Brickmaiden's menu changes each week depending on the season, so there's something new each visit! I made my way through the door and past the many bicyclists who had stopped at Brickmaiden for a bite. Inside, the baked goods on the counter in front, the biscotti on the wall to the left, and the pastry chefs in the kitchen behind me--the shop hummed with activity. I ordered a ginger scone and a currant scone and went into the back garden to eat. The ginger scone was surprisingly sweet, and the currant scone was buttery and lightly tart. Just as the bakers were busy between the main shop and the bake house, the hummingbirds and bees zipped among the flowers in the garden. It was an experience to watch! Surprises on the menu? Delicious food? Charming gardens? What's not to love? I'll be returning to Brickmaiden Breads the next time I'm in town.

Yelp
What a lovely little place! My friend and I stopped here and, in true me fashion, my eyes were wayyyyy bigger than my stomach! I ordered a scone, a fruit tartlet and a cookie. I had several bites of each and they were all so delicious!
google avatar

Dakota T.

Yelp
Wasn't able to make it in the actual bakery yesterday but I bought a baguette at the cheese stand in side the next door food hall. Bought some cheese to pair and it was fantastic! The baguette was super flavorful and had a fantastic crunch. I can only imagine what their other baked goods are like, can't wait to come back!

Dexter A.

Yelp
There are so many delicious things to try, I'm sure, but this place makes my favorite sourdough of all time. The bread is just perfect with the outside crunchy and the inside soft. I stop by this place whenever I'm near by and it's worth it every time. I cannot recommend this bakery enough.
google avatar

Izzie W.

Yelp
Super 6 star review for bread- superlative bread absolutely the best in West Marin- except for the sesame loaf has not been as good as in the past. Sometimes certain bake goods are a bit dry- like brownie and tart. Lovely scones that melt in yr mouth. Great croissants. Gingerbread during Xmas holidays divine. - X Baker from famous Bay Area way place down the road
google avatar

Christine S.

Yelp
Such a charming place, great service! Stopped in for a latte and I left with that and a few loaves of bread to take home. The Sesame Levain and the baguettes are to die for! Next time I will need to try those delicious looking croissants.
google avatar

Lara W.

Yelp
I am still daydreaming about my next opportunity to return here. One of the best parts of going to cafes with my 5 year old is that he always picks baked goods that I would never think to order. Thus I was introduced to the cardamom teacake which is an absolute winner. Waiting around, or going for a walk and coming back for a fresh croissant at 9:00 is also worthwhile! The cinnamon one tasted almost like a morning bun. And as others pointed me to their sourdough baguette, so too will I suggest you grab the smaller loaf, find some cheese (you have plenty of places to find it) and go to town. Well, you're in town, but you know, go to the beach and then go to town on that delicious food. Wonderful place.
google avatar

Bart J.

Yelp
Wow! Had the most amazing savory and sweet pastries here. The quiche was like a complete and perfect breakfast in every bite. The sweet and savory focaccias were full of flavor the savory was perfectly salted.
google avatar

liz k.

Yelp
Delicious breads, coffee, and baked treats. Took our goodies to go and walked around the area. Will definitely return.
google avatar

Kirk H.

Yelp
Things change. Although my last experience was not so great, today was quite different. I didn't get any bakery goods, but my cappuccino was worthy of an update. The espresso was complex with a peachy aftertaste. The milk was maybe a bit too foamy, but it may have been because 2% seems to be the default these days and it's hard to get good results using that. These beans were fresh and craft roasted
google avatar

Vicki C.

Yelp
It took us over 40 minutes to get 2 lattes. When we asked the guy making drinks if he had an order under our name (not even being demanding or angry at them), he was extremely snappy and dismissive - another customer even came up to us afterwards to comment on how rude he was. I then went into the bakery to ask a girl at the register about our order, and she said they must not have printed the receipt. Ridiculous that the guy was so rude to us and wouldn't even check about our order when it was their mistake.

Ben S.

Yelp
Most visitors to town don't know this place is here because it's not on the main drag. They line up in front of the competition on weekend mornings, but this is the best bakery in town, by far. Try the scones and cinnamon rolls... and everything else.
google avatar

Theart P.

Yelp
We love the breads from Brickmaiden and a visit to the store in Point Reyes was nice. It's a very tidy space, well decorated and full of amazing baked goods as well as top notch coffee. Our go to bread there or the farmer's market where they also sell their bread in Terra Linda is the wheat levain. It's always consistent in flavor and a solid choice for sandwiches or soup or dipping in olive oil. The coffee beverages they serve are excellent. They can make a mean soy cappuccino and cortado. The only complaint we have, and we've voiced this with people working there for some time is that they do not offer any vegan pastry options. Their breads, for the most part I believe are all vegan with the except of the ones with cheese noted. It's a shame they don't even try to make a muffin, cookie, scone or some type of dessert item that doesn't contain dairy. If they did, they would be offering an item that not only vegan's would buy, but anyone can buy and enjoy. The items they offer are great and I know they're a very talented group of innovative bakers there. I'm hoping they can come up with a least one or two options, other than bread that are vegan.
google avatar

Alejandra A.

Yelp
Really cute stop, I love their to go station which is really practical. I needed 2 cups of hot water and I was asked to make a purchase which I did. They are marshmallow squares were five dollars, and they were very pricey for the amount that you get. The flavor was good, peppermint marshmallow covered in chocolate, but it was nothing memorable I would want to re-purchase. Nonetheless, I am grateful for the hot water I asked for.

Ms J.

Yelp
Olive bread is amazing. I think it was $7.00 but worth every bite. We also had a cheese polenta loaf and a ginger scone. I'd stick with bread scone was not great.
google avatar

Karen L.

Yelp
Worth it for the visit to their garden. Amazing, beautiful, lovely and very private no matter how many folks are there. Wheat free options not the best - but there's an option and it isn't bad. Mocha isn't syurpy sweet, a true hint of mocha with creamy delish goodness that brings a balance to the drink without obscuring the bean. Day old options are 50% off and WORTH it. Parking and lines are not bad on a Sunday morning. COVID and masking policy are strongly encouraged and most folks were compliant which is great for people who prioritize COVID precautions. A solid investment of time and money.

Katherine F.

Yelp
Stopped by after a camping trip nearby. The goat cheese quiche and Gruyère toast hit the spot, and we just opened the bag of sesame cookies - SO good. Also got a great assortment of day-old scones and bread to take home. They also have a really lovely garden in back where you can enjoy your items along with a coffee or latte. Would go again!

Yelp
This bakery is hands down the region's most innovative and delicious provider of excellent baked breads, pastries and a few other select treats. I tried the Fig and Fennel baguette, and the fennel which is often over utilized or misused in dishes was perfectly executed in this bread - balancing the sweet taste and aromatic essence of the fig. The perfectly crisp but not too hard texture of the baguette was a delight- truly the province of a baker who knows the temperature of their oven well and can turn out reliable yield time and time again. We then tried the parmesan and Kalmata olive Ficelle- and this cute loaf which is perfect for a few days for one person or one to two days for a larger family day was also unbelievably tasty - the medium tart parmesan offsetting the salty Kalmata olive just right with a Italian/Mediterranean sort of flare. There was minimal herbaceous taste to the bread so the wonderful taste of the cheese olive and fresh flour really came through - I could see myself choosing this one again religiously. They also had a rare sighting, one that made my mother smile- she was a baker herself for many years in my youth and would make meringues for us to munch on for days, so when we saw some at the bakery, we just had to get one. It was delicious, and reminded us of old times. I also got a ginger, currant, cherry, almond scone - which is such a great combination of flavors- and again, it had a great texture and was wonderfully baked to perfection so hard to do with scones! I also tried the meatball banh mi sandwich- with mild pickles that seemed local or house made- it was nice and the pickles were mild and crispy. The meatballs were mildly spiced and the only challenge was getting them to stay in the sandwich - so I cut mine in half and that worked better. I highly recommend these amazing bakers to everyone!

Yelp
Love , love Brickmaiden. I bow to thee ! Mostly available at farmers markets , but they did open a small , breezy cafe , Pt Reyes . If you are heading to Stinson , or Inverness, got to stop here & grab some treats . In the summer we were lucky to score amazing bread , crunchy crust , yum And the best coconut bread , ever , I really never had it before to compare , gosh it was light and fresh coconut heaven . Great soups , cookies , brownies , granola , fantastic scones , crackers are yummy & delicious espresso & other beverages . Staff are delightful. It doesn't get any better then this ! They were offering baking classes , pre Covid , very cool . If u stumble upon BM , consider yourself lucky & seize ! Ha Thank me later !

Yelp
Great ginger scone! A bit sweet but not overly so, and the ginger taste is definitely there. The texture was perfect--crispy on the outside and soft and fluffy inside. Reasonably priced too ($4.75). Service was wonderful.

Sherry N.

Yelp
We stopped in on a Sunday to check out their breads and decided to get the seeded sourdough round loaf. A little pricey (9/load) but Wow! What a treat this bread was so delish, it was made that day and so fresh and loaded with seeds on the crust! It's Wednesday and sadly I just ate the last slice and it was almost just as good on day 4! Stored in plastic bag then in paper bag. Kept so well. Tip: she offered us a day old one for 1/2 off but thought against it. Now I wish we had grabbed that too!! Run don't walk!
google avatar

A B.

Yelp
Tasty espresso and baked treats ! They were sold out of all their bread so I'm guessing that is amazing too!
google avatar

Julie B.

Yelp
the bread is good while fresh, but not as good as Jane or Josey Baker quality. It does dry pretty quickly. I like that it is a local bakery . Their prices align with the competition
google avatar

Maya D.

Yelp
The pastries are amazing!! We got a savory scone and a veggie tart and both were top notch and baked to be the perfect mix of crunchy and soft. I could eat these every day. They do seem to start selling out early, so keep that in mind. The coffee was not as impressive, and tasted like something I could just make at home but much smaller and quite expensive for what it is. I say definitely go for the pastries but skip the drinks.
google avatar

Ankita R.

Yelp
We stopped at this cute little bakery on our way to Point Reyes. This place is straight outta a fairy tale with the bakery surrounded by a cute little garden where you can enjoy the baked goods under the sun. We did get a variety of stuff which included savory and sweet tarts, quiche, scones and almond orange cake and everything was so so delicious. Would highly recommend if you are in the area.
google avatar

Jeremy R.

Yelp
As I was wandering Point Reyes I noticed the line at Brickmaiden Breads so I hopped onto Yelp to see what was up and BOOM, 5 stars! I checked out the menu while waiting in line and after conferring with the friendly server at the window, made my choices. A nectarine and honey scone, raspberry hand pie and a bag of sesame cookies. The scone was moist and light with bright nectarine flavor. The hand pie was all flaky crust and fresh raspberries. Finally, the sesame cookies, not exactly like the traditional Italian ones I was expecting as shortbread was substituted for a drier more neutral dough. The shortbread worked though, not too sweet and tender. Overall, top notch pastries.

The Rose Pot De Creme was utterly beautiful. True petals were used in the perfectly balanced infusion, no rose water or rose tea, here. One can taste the difference. The ingredients here are unparalleled. Thus, while another popularized bakery (with chocolate cherry almond cookies that are worth a stop) might have people down the sidewalk, just around the corner, for us Point Reyes devotees this is the new secret spot. The strawberry scone was almost effervescent in its freshness. Quality cream inside. (Definitely go scone.) The earl grey bergamot snickerdoodle was delicious. I love that the menu changes, and I also really wanted to try the cardamom pound cake. :) I'm also certain there will be a next time. There's a feminine quality and attention to detail here that makes the line here feel like a (fresh) breeze.

Yelp
We drive through point Reyes every now and then but not usually early in the morning so haven't had Brickmaiden awesome pastries and coffee until last Saturday and I will be going back. The pastries are some of the best I've ever had and even the coffee was great. Got some chocolate chip cookies to go too.

Yelp
Pastries are very small and very expensive. We got the key lime coconut tart which was just ok. They don't make vanilla lattes either although they have some other flavors. I think that Bovine may be a better bakery.
