The Best Restaurants Around The Galleria

"Eating at Bubba’s, a literal wooden shack, feels more like dining inside a decades-old postcard than anything resembling modernity, which is probably why the burgers are so incredible. Bubba’s specializes in bison burgers, but you can get beef, too, if you’re some kind of burger purist. Dress up the burger with jalapeños, grilled onions, or even an entire frito pie, which is a very Texan thing to do. While you could go here for dinner, visiting Bubba’s for a late lunch will help you avoid getting stuck in rush hour traffic. Plus, you’ll have the rest of the day to nap, which will be necessary." - gianni greene, chelsea thomas

17 Essential Houston Burger Joints

"This divey gem lives up to its iconic reputation as having some of the best buffalo burgers in the Lone Star state. Crowds flock to polish off the “Vegas Burger” topped with BJ’s signature habanero hot sauce, bacon, avocado, Monterey Jack cheese, and a fried egg served over the juicy intensely meaty buffalo patty. Toss in a side of creamy jalapeño potato salad for the best meal you’ve ever eaten in a shack." - Baylea Jones, Eater Staff

Google
Delicious! My burger, the Houston Burger was amazing, I ordered everything on it, and it was awesome. Messy, but oh so good!! I loved everything about it, loved the fries that were super crispy and seasoned well, they didn’t lose their crunch as time passed… the patty was well seasoned and cooked well. Hubby got the Patty melt and then he tried mine and said mine was better because of the bbq sauce and bacon. Overall great, and I would definitely come again.

Google
Honestly I didn’t even notice this location every time I drove by, but once I was recommended to eat here I was completely shocked that a restaurant was under my nose!! For the border burger accompanied with the chili cheese fries. As well as a cokes The border burger was very filling, I opted for the bison meat which came out tasty and juicy, it was a great blend of ingredients and I enjoyed each bite. Chili cheese fries had a surprising kick! They were very delicious with each bite making my mouth water for more. Location is mainly outdoor seating but I felt very comfortable eating and enjoyed the good weather during the time. The staff are very friendly and welcoming as well! Will definitely come back to eat.

My son and I ate at Bubba’s Saturday evening. I ordered online and when we got there, we were told they were temporarily closing for 45 minutes to restock. It was 7:20 PM! Who does that?!?! BUT…the burger was tasty. The onion rings were crispy and delicious, but appear to be frozen. The French Fries were really good, but my son didn’t really like the grilled cheese. I also got the Chili. If the burger business ever falters, Bubba’s could rebrand as the “Best Little Chili House in Texas” and print money! So good!

Google
This place is different from other burger joints. We had one hamburger, two bison burgers, and one BLT. The BLT is my most favorite. The bison burgers were a little chewy and dry. We like sitting out in the patio with no trees but a parking lot of cars. This is a wakeup call of reality that many of us live in suburbs with tree-lined boulevards, green trails, walking paths, lake view, golf course view … so sorry for those struggling to live in war zones.

Google
The over large black woman working the register was one of the least friendly and least helpful employees I’ve come across at a restaurant. It was as if she was angry any customer was there to order. Aside from that it was hard to find and dangerous to enter and exit the lot. Yes the food was good. Unfortunately it was not good enough to justify the drive and the outside dining in Houston heat.

Husband and I wanted a good homemade burger. Yes, I had The Hot Mama it was delicious. Well seasoned, fries crunchy, fresh. Did not disappoint.

Google
Had been in town for a few days and we didn't want big chain restaurants anymore. Looked up restaurants and Bubba's cane up. I went solely based on reviews and I WAS NOT DISAPPOINTED! I LOVED THIS PLACE. Definitely a must if we ever come back.

Google
Place is pretty good. They got some pretty good buffalo burgers with the homestyle Frito pie and my buddy got a double beef Houston burger

Yelp
Consistently well made bison bbq burgers. Been coming here for 10 years and it never disappoints. Make it a stop to eat at this quirky place underneath the freeway in Houston. Long wooden benches and tvs with sports and a double wide trailer for the restaurants. Cashier was very friendly. Ambiance is very casual. Perfect for solo or just friends. NOT a date spot. Come for the food and unique location
google avatar

Yelp
With all the hype this spot gets, I guess we just expected more? Got a double stack with bacon and fries and it was just ok. The burger search continues..

Yelp
Took an hour for two burgers. When we went to check on the order, staff gave us attitude. Husband was told he was being "ridiculous" and "extreme" despite being kind and composed and the staff member was incredibly rude and disrespectful. No apology given whatsoever for the unacceptable wait and attitude. All other parties around us waited an insane amount of time for their orders. We've been big fans in the past, so we were very bummed and disappointed :( Once we finally got our order, bacon was missing from the burger. Not ok!

Yelp
You will eat a great ol' fashioned burger here. Forget shake shack, McD or other crappy burger chains. This place has top tasting bison or beef burgers. Order the onion rings and they will make you cry of how good they are. If you visit Houston, you need to eat at this landmark. This is a hole-in-the-wall place, so if you raise your pinky when you drink a cup of coffee, this is not for you. The service is as expected of this type of venue. They were quick to serve and that is all that matters. I highly recommend!!!
google avatar

Yelp
A simple burger is all you need. Who cares about all the other stuff? I ordered a patty melt. It was a decent size. Order it on rye for sure. So tasty. We liked it the best of the three we ordered. The onion rings were whole ones. Perfect crisp. The fries with the chili cheese was great. Loveddd the kick of the chili. I want to go back for the Frito pie now. Overall the service was decent. They have a pick up window outside. Decent wait time. The space overall wasn't anything to write home about. I'm sure not in the Texas summer would likely work better. No a/c. But fans.

Yelp
I've been here twice now and I love it! My first time I built my own and got a double bacon burger with a side of fries. It was amazing! My second time I decided to try their patty melt and chili cheese fries and to say the least it was amazing again! Everything was so flavorful and the fries were perfectly seasoned and crispy. I always drove past it and thought how interesting it was placed right by all the freeways but I get it you cannot get rid of such a great burger spot. The vibes were great, they have plenty of out door seating with tvs and you can always take your food to go if it's too hot. Service was good and helpful. Living so close to this spot is definitely dangerous because I will be back.

Yelp
My company was hosting a belated Memorial Day luncheon in the office and what's more American than Burgers! Luckily Bubba's is right down the street from our office! We had Bubba's Cater our lunch last year and the food was great so we figured let's do it again this year! I called the restaurant to get a quote for 65 burgers and the host who picked up asked to put me on hold because she needed to talk to the GM. The GM Leo picked up the phone and took my order for 65 burgers (cheese burgers and regular burgers) with an additional 10 plain beef patties on the side. They did it catering style so we could "build your own burger" at the office. On the day of- I had to add a bean burger and a salad because I found out there were 2 individuals who were vegan & vegetarian and Leo was super accommodating to add those orders last minute. The only downer was that the salad dressing did not make it with the salad so the individual who got the salad did not have any dressing with their salad. When we came to pick up the food at 11:20AM, (arrived 10 minutes early) the kitchen was still prepping the food. We waited in my car until 11:35AM when they came out with all the trays of food and condiments. I waited another 5-10 minutes for the buns to be done toasting and brought out to my car and everything was set. Overall the food was delicious and even though we missed the salad dressing, everyone still enjoyed everything! one thing I would change is probably asking for the cheese to be left on the side because everyone loved the patties that had the cheese on it already. We were left with all the patties that didn't have cheese on it so next time, definitely asking for the cheese to be on the side so others can add cheese if they wanted to.

Yelp
Visiting Texas from Michigan seeing a TikTok about Bubbas and did not disappoint fantastic tasting burger plus the chili cheese fries had a great kick to them! Service was fantastic. The young men were energetic and positive attitudes. Great environment!!!! I would highly recommend taking the trip to Bubba's Texas burger Shank.

Yelp
Aneena: Woww. This is my first time eating here and I will definitely be coming back! Theres a couple selection of burgers as well as build your own with a choice of bison and beef as your meats. I got a single patty beef burger with no bun and it was super delicious! The meat was juicy and it was a filling meal. I ordered the fries alongside the burger and omg... best fries ever. They are seasoned spectacularly and they are perfectly crispy. I was eating that up with such speed! Dillon: Probably my favorite burger in Houston as of now. Takes me back to the days of Bernie's Burger Bus... The fries are good too. The Vegas burger is the best thing on the menu. The order options are a bit limited though even for a burger place. It's worth the price for semi-special occasions ie Aneena wants fries.

Yelp
Small place with outdoor seating only. Order at the counter. They call your name and set food in the window. All seating is outside. We didnt hear them call our name so our food sat for a few minutes before we realized. Burgers tasted great. Onion rings were good. The single is plenty unless you are very hungry get the double. You can chose between beef and bison.

Yelp
Truly a Texas experience! Great Burgers and fries and the jalapeño dill potato salad is AMAZING!

Yelp
A fantastic burger and fries with excellent service. I got the Houston Burger and it was soooo delicious and juicy 10/10. They put plenty of bacon that was cooked to perfection. The size of the burger itself was huge and will fill you up quickly. The fries were breaded and we'll seasoned. They had a nice crunch and have great flavor, it kind of reminds me of a light BBQ seasoning. The service was nice and there's plenty of shaded outdoor seating. I'd recommend stopping by on a pretty day outside to have a good time. There is a decent amount of parking, but it's a little tight and right off the road.
google avatar

Ryan C.

Yelp
Yeah this place was great! Burgers were great, chili cheese fries were awesome, service was really good, had a nice conversation with the guy working the counter, and it's a really cool location especially at night. Would love to come back here
google avatar

Carol R.

Yelp
Service was quick but the food was a hard pass! Sadly money wasted. Unfortunately we won't be back. The burger was a little dry and the fries were soggy
google avatar

Serena S.

Yelp
Bubba's has been in business for a long time considering all of the new hype with smashburgers in Houston. For them to still be around, meant I had to check them out! They have plenty of covered outdoor, picnic bench-style seating, however there is not any seating inside the restaurant. The restaurant name is true to what it is as the inside is just a simple burger shack. You order at the counter and they call your order out when it's ready. I ordered the Houston Burger with bison. I enjoyed the crisp bacon with the melty American cheese. Overall, it was good. I wouldn't call it the best, but it was a decently flavored burger.
google avatar

Tre J.

Yelp
Loved this place... til they ?# me out of some $. Ordered one night 39 mins before close... didn't get my order til 20 mins after close. You who should've been making my order sweeping parking lot and bumming cigarettes off me while I wait. Then, Order was completely incorrect once i got home... after close. Sent email to rectify and NEVER RECEIVED RESPONSE.

Yelp
I found this place from a Tik Tok post. I really wanted to see if this burger spot would be a hit. My burger was just okay though. French fries were great and seasoned though, I really appreciated that. The owner did mention the popular burger was not the burger I tried though. Due to that, I would go back to visit again. I ordered a beef burger and should've tried the Bison. There is no dining area. It's more of a order, grab, and go spot.
google avatar

Henry Y.

Yelp
Oh yes, Houston's food scene isn't truly diverse without its own greasy burger shack. Under a tollway? Even better. Eat your burger on the porch as you look out across the road at the Micro Center, peak Houston. I got the Famous Patty Melt, very solid beef patty, with all the toppings you love: grilled onions, grilled cheese, and some jalapenos. Personally, I don't think the rye hit the spot for me, next time I'd opt for a regular bun (I hope they can toast that!). Restrooms are definitely what I'd expect from a shack, just a FYI. It's a normal toilet but the space is a small. At least it's not an outhouse. While the Shack has a very solid burger, the pricing is a bit high considering the location, the value isn't just quite there, Whataburger and In-And-Out are still in the running for when I'm hankering for a burger. Drunk me? See you at the shack!
google avatar

Gabrielle L.

Yelp
1) The burgers were very underwhelming. Also, the produce was VERY sloppily cut AND it was spoiled. 2) A few of the workers had hair all over their heads, and none of them had gloves on. The restrooms were gross looking.
google avatar

Shayla R.

Yelp
worth the hype, love the whatever they put on the fries, they were out of beef so they gave me bison, i didn't really notice the difference, so if your weary of trying it you might as well

Clay W.

Yelp
Holy sh!4. Might be not only the best burger in Houston but maybe one of the best I've ever had.
google avatar

BigSarge P.

Yelp
The Bison burger was good. They need indoor seating to get out of the weather. Parking limited.
google avatar

Anthony L.

Yelp
Bubba's is a Houston gem that's definitely worth your time and money! At this shack they keep it simple, and the results are magnificent. Bubba's is counter service and the indoor area of the restaurant is really small(legit shack - they keep it real), but have outdoor covered seating so you have a space to enjoy your food while it's hot. They make it easy to call in your order and order on 3rd party services like UberEats as well. Bubba's offers beef and bison burgers along with vegan burgers and salad options for any non meat eaters. Give them a try for your next quick lunch in the area and I'm sure you'll become a repeat customer!
google avatar

Nickey ..

Yelp
Nasty! These burgers were disgusting. My son would live on hamburgers if I let him. He took only two bite and said he did not like it. That's says a lot coming from a kid who has never eaten a burger he did not like. Waste of money. Did not taste like beef. Frozen mystery meat. Never Again!

Jimmy V.

Yelp
Nasty burger absolutely not worth the money, the only good thing was the fries but the burger itself was VERY sloppy just way too much sauce on it an all falling apart making the bread soggy. Nasty unless you like burgers sloppy.
google avatar

Douglas A.

Yelp
I tried Bubba's a few days ago but their grill wouldn't start back up. So, I waited a few days and went back and boy, was I impressed! I ordered a double cheeseburger, and this thing came out MASSIVE! I probably would have been fine with a regular cheeseburger. The cooked slices of beef are at least 1/2 inch thick, probably closer to 3/4 of an inch thick. And this burger had TWO of them. It was a little messy to eat, but delicious. I also ordered a side of jalapeno potato salad. Even at 8pm at night, this was fresh. With jalapenos, it gave a new kick to a tried & true side. Overall, I had a great meal and will definitely be back to the Hamburger Spot under the Freeway.

Stebin J.

Yelp
This place his a shed under a highway. In my opinion, their Buffalo burger is a national treasure. Delicious, oozing, tasty, medium rare buffalo burger that is packed with flavor and likely horrible for my heart. But dam does it taste delicious going down. I think this burger along with Prime NYC has likely thee 2 best burgers I've ever tasted in my 40+ years of being on this blue ball.
google avatar

Lauren H.

Yelp
Rubbery, overcooked patties - definitely not fresh. Ate 2 bites then threw away. Placed an online pick-up order. Sign out front says go to window for pick-up. When boyfriend got up there, employee made a rude gesture at him to come inside to get his food.
google avatar

Yelp
UPDATE: I neglected to consider the tip I added. I hope that went to Bubba's. Also, I have been refunded the difference in the price for the menu items comparing Bubba's pricing and GrubHub's mark up. Buyer BEWARE! See my photo. I went through Yelp to connect to Bubba's Website. There were TWO Order buttons to use. I chose the long one at the very bottom of the screen. I then chose TakeOut (not Delivery.). That button goes through GrubHub. When the Bubba's staff was confused when we arrived to pick up our Take-Out (That had a @GrubHub sticker sealing the bag,) he suggested we order through Bubba's website. Thought I had. My @GrubHub paid for order was $40. FORTY! When I tapped the correct Order button (a smaller button slightly obscured,) my order should have been $26 dollars! GrubHub stole $13 from me. THIRTEEN.

Yelp
It isn't worth the money at all. Don't waste your time at this place. You would do better going elsewhere for a good burger.
google avatar

Yelp
mehhhh. My friends and I were HUNGRY after running errands and this was one of the closest and highly rated places near us. It's def a hole in the wall, under a bridge, on the side of the road. They said they had fries, but their fryer was broken. I was soooo sad, but it was probably for the best because fries def didn't fit in my macros that day, lol We all ordered burgers and agreed it was mediocre af. Their patties had to be frozen or something...because it just looked soooo sad. To top it all off, it was also flavorless. I had to pair the melt with ketchup and ranch to make it remotely tasty. For a place with such high ratings, I was incredibly disappointed. I'm disappointed I wasted my cheat meal on this :'(
google avatar

Yelp
Always amazing, Buffalo cheeseburgers with a beer and now... those fries... Perfect combination!
google avatar

Yelp
Located under the Westpark Tollway (any business that they build the highway AROUND has to be good), Bubba's is a hole-in-the-wall burger joint, an actual shack. The front door isn't obvious (it's all the way to the right), but once you go in, the "shack" feel doesn't dissipate - it's a shack in and out. Being a shack doesn't mean they can't cook, they can. I ordered a bison cheeseburger and fries, my wife ordered a beef burger and onion rings. Based on the ambience, I'd expect the world's best burger. It is above average, but not the best. Their meat Patties are what I call "frisbees" - smashed round in a mold, then frozen, and finally unpacked and flung onto a flattop like a frisbee. Since the meat is covered in frost, it steams more than it grills, so the cooked patty isn't really browned properly. On the positive side, they have a proprietary spice rub sprinkled on the meat as it cooks and the fries and onion rings AFTER they're cooked that is quite good and what elevates my rating from a 3 to 4. Overall, it's worth an occasional trip. Nice people, Pretty good burgers in a unique location. Burger Bodega or the original Lankford's Grocery on Dennis Street are good alternatives.

Yelp
You wouldn't normally eat at a place that's under a bridge, but you have to understand the situation. Bubba's was defiant in telling the man, "No! We will not go away" when progress threatened to do away with this place. This burger dive sits underneath a connection bridge which today we know in Houston as the Westpark Tollway. The same place it sat when it opened in the 80s. It's a small place where you order inside and pick up your order either to go or sit outside and conversation as the traffic wizz by on Highway 59 while you stuff your face. (Try going to eat outdoors at the tables when it's not blazing hot outside) The menu is simple, but be warned as some extras cost. You can also order beer that mostly come in a can. Now the fun part. The order: Hamburger with lettuce Small Chilli Cheese Fries Bottled Lemonade Double Bison Bacon Cheeseburger w/cheddar cheese, hatch chilies and spicy pickle. Jalapeño Potato Salad Austin Ale(Don't ask me the name but not bad) A first for me: Bison on a burger. The burger overall was great. The cheddar cheese melted to the consistency of a perfect grilled cheese sandwich! Meat wasn't as heavy as cow and not as greasy. Another first: Anything with Texas Hatch chilies included. Made my burger spicy without the burn. Now, the potato salad was savory and the jalapeños hit on the backend! Not to overwhelming. Them fries were meaty and full of flavor! Best part was all of that was under forty bucks!

Yelp
I ordered a Bison Hotdog with easy mustard togo n it was awesome n very delicious. It was meaty, dry in a good way with moisture at the same time, firm but tender and rich with flavor. The bread holding it was dense, soft n fresh making it filling and pair well with the frank itself. This bison dog is my favorite menu item here. I put it up there with Yoyo and Becks Prime for hotdogs in terms of greatness.

Yelp
The burger meat is very excellent and fresh here. In my opinion this burger meat has to be the best in Houston. The bun was soft and airy and the cheeseburger was so well constructed. I'd definitely return as my go to burger place. The chili cheese fries were not so great! I wonder if it is because I took this to go and they didn't want it soggy so placed the chili and cheese in different containers. Still, the ratios were off, way too much chili for the tiny amount of cheese. The chili itself had a sweetness to it that felt like it had an extra seasoning that overpowered it. It might taste different dining in and they may even portion the cheese and chili out correctly, but 1 star for the chili and cheese fries. Parking is gravel, and all foods are made to order so it's indeed hot and fresh.

Yelp
I've been seeing Bubba's whenever traveling from Dallas. Finally decided to stop and check it out and I'm glad we did. Great burgers and a great day to sit outside! Definitely recommend!

Yelp
Best buffalo burger in town! They do now offer fries on their menu, but the burger alone is satisfying and really all you need!

Yelp
Continuing my quest for the best H-Town burger, I decided to try a local burger joint that's been on the map for ages. Here's the scoop. We were greeted by friendly and helpful folks behind the counter, which was very nice and appreciated. There is no indoor seating (or not much from what I could see), and although they have a large "chiller" on their covered porch and several fans blowing about the place, they were no match for the blistering Houston heat we've been having recently. But when the weather is milder, it could be a nice area to enjoy a burger. As for the food: The fries, from what I understand, are a fairly new item on the menu, and they did not disappoint! They were amazing. Crisp on the outside, tender on the inside, and the seasoning was spot on delicious. Taken from a fry snob, these fries were top in the list. I'd go back for them anytime. Their jalapeno potato salad was also very good. The fresh jalapeno gave it a nice little kick, and combined with the dill, made for a nice combination and was a winner in my book. The beer could have been just a little colder, but it was a refreshing respite from the heat outside, and they had a nice selection to choose from. Since only outdoor seating is offered, that burger has to be worth the trip and the sweat. That being said, I'm headed back to the A/C because the burger for me personally was not so great. Granted, I also consider myself a hard-to-please burger snob (which is why I'm still looking for that elusive best burger H-Town has to offer, but I digress...) The patty was way overcooked, so it was tough to bite into, and the grilled onions in my opinion were non-existent, apparently hidden under the cheese from what I was told. But if you like your burger well, well, done, as many do, it might be worth the trip, especially for those amazing fries.

Yelp
Possibly the worst burger and fries I've ever purchased in my entire life. I literally threw it in the garbage.

Yelp
Bubba's is a true Houston classic that's been around for many many years. I've been coming here since I was young and the informal vibe, delicious meat, and very competitive price has kept me coming back year after year. They also offer bison meat in their burgers, which I feel is a healthier alternative to beef and, in my opinion, has a gamier, richer taste. Service is usually pretty fast, and they're able to accommodate even when things get a little bit crowded. Other than that, there's just not much else to say! It's a no-frills burger shack that delivers on good value and delicious flavor. Highly recommend anytime you're in the mood for burgers. After all, who doesn't love sitting underneath Westpark to munch on some burgers, while cars whiz by overhead?

Yelp
I've tried burgers all over the US and beyond, but nothing beats the buffalo burgers at Bubba's Under the Beltway. I've been a loyal customer for over a decade and will keep coming back as long as they're around. If you've never had a buffalo burger, you need to try one here. The double bison bacon burger is only $15 and packed with flavor. It's been my go-to for the past 10 years and I believe it's the best burger in Houston. Bubba's is family-owned and has the same friendly staff I remember from when I first started visiting. I'll keep supporting this place whenever I'm on the west side of town. Great job, Bubba's Burger Shack!

Yelp
Order took about 10 minutes at 1 pm on a Friday. They had quite a few customers. It was a nice day. Patty melt on rye was good but nothing special. They charged me for a bison patty but only gave me a beef patty. They gave me a refund for the difference ($2). The cup of chili was super small. It's the same size as the condiments container that came with it. I liked it but $5 for that ... idk. It has a kick without adding anything to it.

Yelp
The building and location might not be appealing, but the burgers are the best! Double bacon cheese burger always hit the spot, and they'll do a puppy patty for your fury companion.

Yelp
Why can't all burger joints be like this? Gotta try this place. Five stars!!!! Sides are great and burgers are flavorful

Yelp
We stopped by Bubba's on a whim after I had one of my random cravings and I'm sure glad that my husband indulged it as the place did not disappoint. Bubba's Texas Burger Shack is literally that, a shack, by the highway. You might very well drive right by it, if you're not looking for it specifically. However, despite its modest setting, the food was fairly good for a shack under a bridge. We tried three of their specialty burgers, the Border, Houston and Mushroom Jack burgers, all Bison, in addition to a nice helping of chili cheese fries. The Border burger was decent but nothing to write home about. The Mushroom Jack was a few steps up from the Border but the true stars of the afternoon were definitely the Houston burger, with its tasty spicy jalapeño bbq sauce and the amazing chili cheese fries. Service was quick for so many items, so can't complain there. They also have a variety of adult beverages available for purchase if you prefer a beer with your burger. I would certainly return to satiate my random burger cravings.

Yelp
Burger was very good but wasted time money and calories on: Coke Zero was NOT Coke Zero it was Diet Coke. DC sucks and Zero not the same but 100% better than DC Fries are only worth it if you are the less than 1% who likes battered and season salted fries. I would pay double for the frozen fries from Sam's across the street.

Yelp
Really wanted to like these burgers more. We knew about the quirky location and the absence of fries, but for being so highly recommended I guess I was hoping for a juicier and more flavorful burger. The chili for the frito pie was super bitter. The portion wasn't particularly generous, either - once we split off with our friends after dinner, we ended up going somewhere else to grab another bite to cap it off, which I've never done before or since. Definitely a place that likely has a lot of long-time fans, so this could be hitting some nostalgic nerves, but this was a Meh for me.
