The bún bò Huế here is probably as authentic as you can get in Chicago. The broth was lip-smackingly savory with deep layers of flavor since they didn't shy from using shrimp paste. The thick rice noodles had a good chew and the toppings were all delicious. Missing from the veggies plate on the side were a few types of herbs thag traditionally go with the dish like mint, basil, etc. A more intense kick of spice would also elevate this dish significantly.

I came on a Sunday for lunch and it was pretty empty; it’s a spacious spot and felt a little too awkwardly quiet, but overall the vibe was comfortable. The menu is huge, and the options are very diverse, from classic Vietnamese fare to traditional Central Vietnamese dishes to classic Thai staples. The prices are also solid and affordable. I ordered the Vermicelli Noodle Salad Bowl with Grilled Shrimp and Beef, a classic dish that usually hits the spot for me. Overall, it was appreciably light and refreshing for a hot day, but I would try to choose something else if I come again in the future. I wasn’t too impressed with the meats— the shrimp and beef were both pretty overcooked and tough. The vermicelli noodles itself were good— they were light and chewy, though I wish there was more sauce to go with it. The veggies tasted fresh, and the peanuts and egg roll added a nice, crispy texture to the bowl. I love to try new restaurants and this is the must-return one. We and Tom yum, penang curry, and the crispy noodle. All were tasty. It's hard to beat the flavor, portion, and price in the chicago area. It's a hidden gem.

No.12 and No.26。It's a big bowl. It's delicious. I like my choice of No. 26, which has shrimp kebabs and sliced beef, and lots of vegetables, and the noodles taste vermicelli and refreshing. With sauce, the taste is really great, sweet and sour, and it is comfortable to eat in summer. The noodle soup tastes great, too.

I ordered the pho tai. The broth was not clear, tasted like artificial flavoring, and had a weird initial/lingering aftertaste. I could not finish my pho. I love pho and this place was disappointing in terms of pho broth and meat quality. However, the noodles were al dente and tastes great. I would not come here again.

3.5 stars. I was craving bun bo hue so I had to find somewhere that made an authentic one, and let me tell you this place makes a great one! Bun bo hue is a vermicelli rice noodle dish with different meats (sliced beef, pork sausage, and pork knuckle) in a spicy pork/beef broth. It originates from Hue, Vietnam. The bun Bo hue is perfectly balanced and spicy, but not too spicy. You can add more spice though if you'd like. They don't skimp on the meats which is really nice. I feel like it's hard to come across places that actually load the meat, but here they give you plenty. The meat quality is good too. For this dish alone I would give 4.5/5 stars. Also ordered cha gio (Vietnamese spring rolls) and thought these were good, but one of ours did have a strand of hair in it. The service is pretty slow and we didn't get our Vietnamese coffee that we had ordered along with our food. Once you order your food and receive it the waitstaff doesn't check up on you again. It took awhile to finally flag down someone to check where our coffees were and we ended up getting double charged for them, but they noticed when I went to go pay and let me know which I appreciated. I think service could improve but the staff was friendly. Put this spot in your list for winter food, I promise the bun bo hue is worth it!

I've tried to come here a couple of times for dinner (like after the Argyle street fest) but it was wayyy too busy, and I didn't want to wait. But I figured if it was so busy, it must be good! And I was right! We went for lunch on a weekend and were easily seated without a wait. Cafe Hoang has a pretty big menu and there are a lot of dishes where you can choose tofu as your protein. I noticed that all of the appetizers seem to have meat or fish in them though. I was really hoping for a veggie spring roll! We had the crab rangoons, which were stuffed with filling, full of flavor, and super crispy. I ordered the panang curry (my favorite) and it was delicious! I loved the huge chunks of fried tofu they included, and the broth had a great balance of spicy and sweet. The portions were huge! I ended up taking a lot home. Cafe Hoang is easy to get to. The Argyle red line stop is close by, there's parking all up and down Argyle, or you can take the 36 bus running on Broadway.

If you're looking for likely the *best* Bun Bo Hue in Chicago, look no further than Cafe Hoang! Located on Argyle where there is a plethora of Vietnamese restaurants and markets, this place seals the deal if you are looking particularly for that dish. They make it just the right amount of spicy, and the service was quick (not very talkative though). The restaurant itself is very outdated, but that's typical for these type of places on Argyle I feel like. Lastly, and a huge plus, I'd like to call out that they are BYOB! I'll be sure to come back here with a 6 pack of beer in the future!

When I saw all the Yelp reviews calling this the best bun bo hue in Chicago, I busted over there (aka my bf drove) to see the hype. Service was pretty slow but I have to say, the food was exceptional. We started off with spring rolls and Vietnamese coffee and then got pho and BBH. The pho broth was INSANELY GOOD- it had a peppery kick I enjoyed. But the star of the show was the bun Bo hue- just the right amount of spice, tender meat, and soft noodles. You best know we joined the clean bowl club. Highly recommend them for a good Vietnamese meal.

I'm very impressed by their fried rice! I sat in the restaurant and ordered a chicken fried rice. It was a very big portion that I took home and split into 2 more meals! :) The dish was flavorful and very enjoyable to eat! I loved that there was just enough oil to make it look and taste appetizing. The atmosphere of the restaurant was also very nice. The staff were attentive and quick to bring out food. Overall, I would order from them again and definitely also recommend their Bon Bo Hue!

One of my favorite places to get bun Bo hue! I think place has been a staple in the Argyle neighborhood for awhile and it never disappoints! No fancy things, just good eats. The Bun Bo Hue is definitely spicier than the way way my girlfriend's family makes it, but very flavorful broth! It comes with a side of veggies (cabbage, bean sprouts, mint and a lime wedge). Everything melds together perfectly and it's a great slurp especially for the cooler and rainy spring evenings. Definitely recommend. The pho options and vermicelli bowls are also great if that's more your vibe.

Pretty solid Vietnamese food. My fiancé and I got the bun bo hue and the dry vermicelli noodles with shrimp and beef. The bun bo hue was perfect for a cold day. The broth was very flavorful and had a great kick of spiciness that didn't detract from the flavor. It was a bit more spicy than we are used to, but we both handle spice well (just a warning to people who don't like spicy dishes). The vermicelli noodles were great, too. I loved the super thin noodles of this dish. The egg roll was good, but the grilled shrimp could've had a bit more of a charred flavor. They tasted pretty flat, although the fish sauce helped add some dimension to the dish. Additionally, the service was good, and the restaurant looked nice and clean. The prices were reasonable and in-line with most of the other Vietnamese restaurants you'll find in the area. Portionwise, the dishes were a decent size. We didn't have any leftovers, but we felt pretty full after.

Food: pad see eiw was average. Very oily. Ordered it extra spicy and it was mild. The red chili peppers on the side only added more oil, zero heat. The brocolli was all stems and extra crispy (barely cooked, could tell it was not pre steamed). It was pretty flavorless and I wouldn't order it again. My friend, who was from Vietnam, hated the food. She got the pho. She said the chicken was over cooked. They did not bring out the Thai basil, lime, and bean sprouts. I had to go inside and ask for some, but I noticed that ALL the other tables inside had it. Hmmm. Service: server was rude. Interrupted me mid sentence to go "uh huh, yeah" a bunch of times. Made me repeat myself numerous times, but did not make my friend repeat herself. Hmmmm. Vietnamese coffee was mostly condensed milk and half a cup of heavy whipping cream. Barely more than a double espresso's worth of coffee. It felt like decaf too, even after ordering two. I've had better Thai food elsewhere and I trust a country-native's opinion on Vietnamese food to tell me she wouldn't go back either. Waste of money. Ambiance was decent. They have three tables outside. Two of which sat dirty, unbussed and not wiped, after being there an hour. Inside kinda smelled like BO... huge oof. Edit: oh, and they don't take discover or Amex because of the "fees" so you better have a visa, mastercard, or cash.

I mostly review Vietnamese restaurants in the Philly metro area and my favorite dish is bun bo Hue. So where do I go when I'm in Chicago? Cafe Hoang has a warm interior that makes you feel that you're in a historic, noble place. Ample seating, parking is easy and all in a nice, mostly Vietnamese area. Plus, the sign says in Vietnamese that they specialize in bun bo Hue. So... The broth is mildly spicy with strong fragrances of homemade shrimp paste. It tastes sharp but balanced. The cuts of beef are juicy but I would have wanted more. Pig feet also a bit small but still tender and flavorful. Veggies were there but I wished for banana leaves. The best part was their blood cubes. Something about their recipe for them left them really unique and delicious. Left me feeling fulfilled and wishing we lived closer. Next time we go we will try the bun mam. The bun bo Hue gets 5 stars from me! Well done!

Got seated right away which is amazing... but sadly everything went wrong form there. we waited over 30 min and no body came to use for service. It is not until I personally went inside to ask the staff to take our order. They took our order right away after we approached them. For the next hour after we placed our order they have brought out 5 dishes that we did not order. We did not get our drinks either. I had to go back in and clearly our order again because they do not know what we ordered an hour ago. We then waited for over another 20 minutes and just called it at that because it's simply amazing how a kitchens can mess up our order 5 times when two of those dishes was repeating wrong orders. I believe this is one do the worse service I have personally experienced. Good luck to who ever comes here.

This place is very conscious of the pandemic. As I walked in they offered to me a code to scan for a menu. I don't have that kind of a phone so they directed me to a menu taped to a table. They explained that it was for the covid safety. I feared for the food but am willing to try anything and I was coming from Physical Therapy so I was very hungry. I ordered Spring rolls and yellow curry. Their menu said red curry was hot and yellow curry was spicy. I like hot but people have different ideas of hot so I ordered the yellow. They had green also but I don't like green curry. They had a much bigger selection but I love curry. I sat an read. it is a large restaurant and several people entered as I was there as well as several picked up orders. I was the only non Asian so I assume the food is traditional. The spring rolls were generous and not bad I would say about a rating of 7.5 but the peanut sauce was excellent. The curry was wonderful even with me putting the whole bowl of rice in. I am a big fan of curry and this was very good curry. It was not hot at all. The price was about $2 less that I am used to for this type of meal. I liked it, try it.

Best Bun Bo Hu by far. After eating it here no other place seems to compared. I don't really think of anything else here because really this is their signature dish. I came here one Sunday and saw literally every table order the same thing noodle dish. Almost every time I come here the entire restaurant will order the same dish. This is one restaurant that is known for one dish. Their Bun Bo Hu does three things better than other restaurants. 1. Their broth is better. Some places feel like a pho broth with some spices added. This taste distinctive to pho broth, a natural spice flavor. 2. It has coagulated pork blood cubes. This is an expensive ingredient that most restaurants won't use since it is more of an acquired taste. But their taste delicious absorbing the broth flavor making it so good. 3 It is nicely spice. For me it's my spice level in the right spicy. Not too spicy to hurt, Not too bland to taste.

We came on a slow day and after waiting 5-10 minutes, we informed the server walking by that we were ready to order. They replied "hold on" and we proceeded to wait another 5 minute before someone came to take our order. There was a larger table that arrived after us and got their food before we even ordered. Another larger party that arrived after us also got their order taken even after we asked. The servers were speaking with the other tables in Vietnamese I would not return nor recommend this place to anyone. There are plenty of better pho spots in the area.

My gal pal and I went to Cafe Hoang on Argyle the other day for an early dinner. She had a hankering for some pad thai, and I wanted to try a new place. Cafe Hoang serves Vietnamese and Thai dishes. Photos of the dishes are displayed along the walls for inspection. I really enjoyed my jackfruit smoothie, sweet but not too sweet. I ordered the stir pan fried noodle with chicken and a huge pile of mixed vegetables. At first I was wondering where the heck the noodles were hiding, as the healthy selection of vegetables was very evident. I then noticed that the noodles were tofu-sized rectangles of bundled flat noodles. The noodle rectangles reminded me of those t-shirts that are somehow densely packaged in the shape of a cube or a disk or an animal head but somehow unfolds into a regulation t-shirt. You kind of bite into a noodle rectangle and it unfolds into a little bundle of noodles. To be honest the dish was on the bland side, but I dare not add any of the spicy condiments. At least my dish did not seem too greasy, and I ate up 99% of the dish. My friend had the pad thai and the noodle dish looked good.

I arrived with a group of 4 with no wait on a Sunday at 11:30am. The restaurant was clean and comfortably busy. I ordered wrap your own spring rolls with nem nuong $13. That was shared with the table and came with ~10 smaller sized rice paper, 6 nem nuong shaped like meatballs which we cut in half to fit in our spring rolls, veggies (mint, lettuce, sliced cucumbers, matchstick cut carrots) and fish sauce. This place is known for their bun bo hue so we all ordered it. It was pretty good, the best spot for bbh in Chicago in my opinion. It had good flavor (wasn't spicy, though I'd like everything to be super spicy), all the delicious meats (pigs feet with the bone, beef, pork sausage) and one bigger than average blood cube, noodles, and a bounty of veggies to go with it. This past weekend's first sight of winter weather had us craving some Vietnamese soup to keep warm. With our usual spot being temporarily closed for a week, we stumbled upon Cafe Hoang not too far from where we parked our car on Argyle. Overall, the good things about this spot are the affordable prices and it's BYOB. The service is pretty standard. Nothing astonishing or that above and beyond the call of duty effort. After studying the menu for a bit, I noticed they do serve Thai food as well. I wasn't as impressed with the pho options, so I opted for the Spicy Tom Yum soup off their Thai menu featuring shrimp, carrots, mushrooms, celery, corn, bamboo shoots, basil leaves, & coconut milk. Overall a nice balance of creamy and vegetable flavors, and the soup was also served with a side of white rice. A good sized bowl for $12 and I thoroughly enjoyed each and every bit of soup. Both my fiancee and our friend that joined us, opted for the house special pho which included rare beef and a beef meatball. Both of them complained that the soup wasn't piping hot but rather luke warm which was a disappointment since the weather was cold out and hot soup was the main reason we went out to eat. Beside that, the flavors of the broth were decent from what I was told and of course served with the standard affair of assorted leaves and bean sprouts. Decent for $9 per bowl. Other than that, keep an eye on your bill. They tacked on an additionally $20 to my final bill by mistake since they do not have a computerized ordering system. Everything is hand written and calculated manually before running it through the credit card machine. So, due to sloppy handwriting the 3 was read as a 5 and resulted in an additional $20. The family and I checked out Cafe Hoang for dinner and we left feeling very satisfied. Thanks to Yelp, I ordered the Bun Bo Hue. It was delicious. Flavorful broth with all the right meats. My grandma would be proud of how it was made. We ordered the girls crab rangoon as well as the chicken fried rice. They lived each dish. The fried rice is very generously sized so we were able to take half of it home. The hubby ordered the ca kho to with white rice. He loved it. I had several bites and it was really good.

Was looking for a great place for bun bo hue and Cafe Hoang did not disappoint. Very flavorful and rich compared to other places I have tried. It did have a little stronger taste of shrimp paste compared to other bun bo hue I have tried so it could be an acquired taste for those that are not familiar with it. The hubby's pho and meatballs was good too. The broth had depth in flavor. It is a little pricey compared to other mom and pop shops on argyle. The wait was a little long too so at least the taste of the food made up for it!

4.5 Cafe Hoang saved my life. Last week whilst I was hit by a severe cold, the only food item that sounded remotely appealing was pho. When your sense of taste and smell is utterly compromised due to intense congestion, one can still count on the powers of fragrant pho to break through the barriers. But, I didn't even have the strength to walk my dog (thanks, Wag). While many Vietnamese eateries deliver to my Uptown apartment, that service comes at a steep cost... to the tune of $5 average delivery charge. Nope, a delivery charge that's more than half the cost of a bowl of pho just doesn't equate to me. Luckily, I found Cafe Hoang on DoorDash and for a limited time, they're offering free delivery! Done and done. Though the Yelp reviews suggest that Cafe Hoang makes super tasty food, I didn't expect it to be as good as it was. They make one of the most fragrant pho broths I've ever had, and that's saying a lot considering I could barely breathe at the time. Everything is packaged neatly and hot and cold accoutrements are separated - all very important when transporting the components of pho. I really enjoyed getting a liberal portion of bean sprouts, lime, basil, rice noodles and a little container of hot sauce. Only thing I was missing? The fresh cilantro. I also tried the spring rolls which were some of the best I've had. As I didn't have the appetite to finish both pho and spring rolls, I wrapped the remaining 1.5 spring rolls in a damp paper towel and they were still near perfect the next day. Looking forward to more fresh deliveries from Cafe Hoang, and hopefully under healthier circumstances next time!

3.5 would be a more appropriate rating. My classmate recommend that I take a visit down to Cafe Hoang for their bun bo hue and I did just that! I usually have Sunday brunch down in Uptown with my mother so we did just that. When we arrived, it was pretty busy so we had to wait maybe 10 minutes ish till a table was ready. No biggie. We sat down and and was looking at the menu. We order three bowls of bun bo hue and two appetizer. Now, the food was absolutely delicious. The bun bon hue really lived up to its reviews. Why not a 4 or 5 star Kim? Well, I'll tell you Yelpers! The service was overall slow and unattentive. We had to call someone to take down our order. We never got our water glasses filled. We only recieved two napkins for three people. We were never checked on as well. Yo girl had to flag a waiter down for the check. I know it's all minor stuff, but I felt slightly like Casper.

It hurts to write this review because I'm also Vietnamese but here goes nothing. I came here on a Sunday with my girlfriend. They were busy and the tables were full when we first walked in, but we were seated shortly. There was one waitress and she seemed overwhelmed/confused. Not sure if she was new. Two other parties came in after us and were also seated. 20 mins passed and the waitress still hasn't taken our orders.. she did proceed to take orders from the 2 parties that came in after us which prompted me and my girlfriend to leave. We went next door to uptown pho.

Loved it, was just like mama made (maybe even better...sorry mama) Walked over here during a lunch break and was not disappointed on how fast this was. I knew I wanted BBH so I ordered it right away. I don't usually eat the greens that are served at Vietnamese places but was glad I did because it enhanced the dish itself. I was cashless and wasn't prepared for the $15 minimum for CC so I ordered another BBH to go. $19.75 after tax for 2 bowls of Bun Bo Hue! Not bad at all. Things to note -$15 min for credit cards -Extensive Vietnamese menu with some Thai plates as well

One of the best places for Bun Bo Hue, a favorite Vietnamese soup containing rice vermicelli and beef in Chicago. The broth was authentically made with simmered beef and pork bones for many hours and lemongrass. The bowl included thin slices of marinated and boiled beef shank, chunks of oxtail, pig's knuckles, and cubes of congealed pig blood, which has a color between dark brown and maroon, and a texture resembling firm tofu. The restaurant had plenty of space inside, and the service is fine. I usually found free parking spots on the roads nearby.

Hands down, best Bun Bo Hue (BBH) in the Chicagoland area! My boyfriend and I came on a Friday night and got seated right away. We each ordered BBH and pretty much killed the entire bowl. The broth was very flavorful and they give you a generous amount of meat. The pricing is very reasonable at about $10/bowl. This is the place to go to for your BBH fix!

I used to rate Vietnamese restaurants based on how good their pho is. Now I do the same but except with bun bo hue. And so based on the taste and quality of their bun bo hue, I give place a solid A! Ingredients are fresh and home made and what sets them apart from the rest is their broth. It's just a perfect combination and sweet and spicy without being too greasy. It's a bit dingy and dark looking inside so there's not much see with the decors and the ambience. If you're looking for a lively, hip and friendly place to eat. This ain't it. If you just want to savor an amazing bowl of bun bo hue in peace and quiet, this is the place of your dreams.

When I came in, I was greeted and promptly seated. I ordered a dish of chicken with mixed vegetables served over soft yellow egg noodles. It came pretty quickly, and was delicious and well presented. I especially liked the flavor in the noodles. It was well seasoned, and the meat was cooked until it was tender. They only lost one star because the waitress stopped paying attention to me after bringing me my food. I had to walk up to her to ask her for a to go box and the check. I also had to walk up to the register to pay; she wouldn't come to my table to collect my money. She was too busy talking to her friend behind the counter. Hopefully, this isn't normal behavior there. I will definitely return to try more of their dishes. From what I've seen so far, they seem to blend Vietnamese and Thai food in a very creative and tasty way.
