The 22 Essential Restaurants in Ensenada, Mexico

"If you’re not able to make it over to La Cava de Marcelo in Ojos Negros for a cheese tasting at the largest cheese cave in Latin America, Casa Marcelo offers an easier way to try the brand’s fresh, aged, and snacking cheeses. The breakfast menu features Mexican classics — chilaquiles, a variety of egg dishes, and machaca (beef jerky) — and for lunch there are Ensenada-style ceviches, tiraditos, and roasted fish. Or just grab a glass of wine and order a cheese board of Casa Marcelo’s signature Ramonetti cheeses, made from the milk of Holstein cows on its ranch." - Bill Esparza

2024 Mexico MICHELIN Bib Gourmands

"Casa Marcelo's welcoming facade is enhanced with a flourish of bougainvillea, while the dining area is a courtyard shaded by wood slats and dense trees. This local favorite is owned by Marcelo Castro, a fourth-generation cheesemaker for Ramonetti cheeses, produced east of Ensenada in the Valle de Ojos Negros. It's a popular spot for breakfast with a menu that features local ingredients from the ranch, including the artisanal cheese used to garnish the signature chilaquiles. Come afternoon, lunch items are available and worth sticking around for. The tostada de camaron is a lovely balance of fresh chili heat, herbal brightness and citrus acidity; and the cochinita pibil skillet is a slow-cooked delight to be scooped up with your choice of masa or flour tortillas." - The MICHELIN Guide US Editorial Team

Google
This place has been rated by Michelin as Bib Gourmand for a reason. Very good food at reasonable prices. Excellent dishes with their twist. We had the casuelita en salsa verde and the platos Marcelo. Both were great options. They start you off with some bread and their signature cheese on the house accompanied by a salsa matcha with what I think is Chipotle. All very good. The customer service was excellent and the place is very near, within walking distance of the main strip in Ensenada.

Google
Food was great, but not that memorably delicious. Very popular (maybe because they are on Michelin bin gourmand), so we had to wait like 40 min. Service was good though

Google
It was our place for breakfast for 2days stay in Ensenada. The place is amazing and the food is excellent. The experience this place offers is hard to describe, just try it! Muy delicioso! 😙🤌

Google
The space is absolutely gorgeous and the food was 10/10. So glad we found this place - might be the best chilaquiles I’ve had.

David Shapiro

Google
Michelin recommended. Hearty brunch. Delicious food.

Google
A hidden gem. Unassuming on the exterior, but a beautiful leafy courtyard inside for a very chill ambience and they were very kind about our children tagging along who only wanted tortilla chips lol. The food was incredible, both the portobello risotto and cochinita pibil were delicious and even the cheese they brought with the bread was delightful. Highly recommend.

Google

Google
What a charming spot for breakfast. The food was excellent, service was spot on, and the vibe was perfect. A older Spanish vibe for sure, loved the courtyard with all the foliage. Good coffee and Mimosas, the two dishes we tried were unique and delicious. I highly recommend trying this place. If I had tried more of their dishes, I would probably given them a 5 star review.

Yelp
Este lugar es increíble. La comida está bien deliciosa. Los chilaquiles son lo máximo.

Yelp
10/10 the lamb chilaquiles were DELICIOUS!!! Best I've ever had I also got the mushroom and egg my first time trying something like that and I honestly wasn't disappointed!! Beautiful dining area great for family and friends! The service was fast and efficient! Amazing prices!!

Yelp
The food here was absolutely delicious and the and outdoor patio area is SO cute! Very peaceful and clean. Will be coming back with my whole family when we visit Ensenada.

Yelp
Great spot. Service is excellent, the patio is beautiful and the food is delicious We ordered the chilaquiles verdes and the cheese fresh fruit and juices.

Yelp
Really loved the idea of this place. Kind of a farm to table situation. Unfortunately, the food wasn't nearly as good as the concept. Unripe Orange Juice. I love that it was fresh squeezed, but it would have been better as a ceviche or carnitas marinade. The dry style machaca was overly salty. I should have known better than to order meat "floss". The flavors were unbalanced and not good. Black beans were dry with mediocre flavor. They reminded me of the first couple of times I made refried beans. The chilaquiles were also a dud. And everything we ate sat in our stomachs like a rock. Heavy and bloated. On a positive note, our breakfast was inexpensive. But ironically pretentious menu. And nothing we tried tasted good.
google avatar

Jaime O.

Yelp
Good breakfast they have a cat that watches you eat from the tree. I would recommend to come early

Emmanuel G.

Yelp
Michelin rated for a reason. Food was great. Hardest part will be deciding what to eat. Good kid options. Service was great.
google avatar

Yelp
This is some of the best breakfast I've had in Ensenada. The service was great and the food was amazing. Our waiter was very friendly and asked if we needed an English menu. It appears to be a local hot a lot for breakfast. The best part was being greeted by the restaurant cat named Bola.
google avatar

Ginevra A.

Yelp
We visit here for brunch every time we are in Ensenada. As a creature of habit I always get the omelet hongos which is terrific and my partner tends to try new things. He's loved the barbacoa and the cochinita pibil but last week he didn't love Plato Marcelo - felt the cheese was too congealed. Their house cheese with pan is delicious, the sauces on my omelette are also as good, I believe it's beet, pumpkin and a herb sauce. They have a great garden to sit (good weather is a must) there's some cover but it wouldn't suffice in rain. And a new addition of a friendly kitty (always my favorite!)

Yelp
It's always our go to when we are in Ensenada. The costumer service is great and so is the food.
google avatar

Yelp
Went for breakfast looking for an authentic, local experience, and was not disappointed! I ordered the chilaquiles red with carnitas and it was so good! Would definitely recommend and come back next time I'm in Ensenada.
google avatar

Christine T.

Yelp
Loved their sangria. Wasn't overly sweet. I got the 2 eggs plate with seasonal vegetables and beans. The seasonal vegetables were ok - it was nopales. The eggs however were cooked to perfection. I got over easy. Service did take a while but didn't mind too much because of their outdoor cat. Very cute cat. Very friendly.
google avatar

Joshua S.

Yelp
The food is great and the service is even better. It's a nice hidden gem within the town.
google avatar

Yelp
The food, service and atmosphere is excellent. A must stop if you are going to Ensenada.

Yelp
Amazing food and vibes! We got here with a large party and no reservation and got seated right away. Their welcome appetizer is incredible. Service was bit slow as it was busy but loved it and would definitely recommend.

Alex R.

Yelp
Great food! This spot is a nice gem and the dishes are very good. I wasn't too familiar with Ensenada , but if you're a tourist and a foodie check this place out forsure.

Yelp
Casa Marcelo is my favorite spot in Ensenada. The fresh complimentary ricotta is creamy and delicious. Everything I've tried is phenomenal! The French toast is the best I've ever had. Service is always good and the ambiance is lovely. The outdoor patio seating is charming.
google avatar

Luiza C.

Yelp
We came for the cheese tasting which is not on their menu but they do have one. It was about 70 pesos per person and totally worth every penny! The ricotta was definitely my favorite.
google avatar

Carrie T.

Yelp
Casa Marcelo is a must when you are in Ensenada! The food and ambiance are always a delight. Great for breakfast and brunch. The service was great and attentive. Definitely recommend. Not a tourist trap with mediocre food.

Yelp
This cute breakfast place was SO good and kid friendly. Parking was super easy. It had a great patio filled with trees and birds. We loved the ambiance. Their food was great with perfect portions for 2. We especially loved their chili pepper sauce. We will definitely be back.
google avatar

Amy L.

Yelp
Amazing food and cute spot! Dog friendly and they have a cute restaurant cat too. Started with their complimentary ricotta and warm bread. I can't go back to eating bread and butter anymore. Then ordered the Plato Marcelo and the chilaquiles with choice of meat and red or green salsa. This was the best breakfast I've ever had. Will definitely be coming back!
google avatar

Anthony W.

Yelp
The very best Chilaquiles I've ever had. This place was so friggin good. Luckily we walked to this place because if you were randomly driving in this area, you just might miss it. We walked in and shortly after a waiter greeted us and sat us at a table. What was cool was that the guy spoke pretty good english too. When I looked around it literally felt like I was at someone's home. Super homie feels. I think what I liked about the Chilaquiles the most was all the different flavors I tasted with fried chips, the salsa and the freshness and of everything else in the dish. Did I mention that we got tons of food? The price seemed too good to be true that we ended up giving them a huge tip. But yea. If ever comeback to Ensenada, I definitely know where I'm coming for breakfast.

Yelp
An awesome stop for breakfast, and pretty unexpected compared to the rest of the street that it's on. We came through on the way home from Valle, and had a delicious and relaxing meal here. Dining is outdoors but shaded on the patio and is very cute without being overly touristy and still being very cozy. The food was great - they started us with some bread and mix of requeson, pesto, which was seriously delicious. I ordered the portabello with chilorio, which came with a healthy heap of pork, which was delicious. The juices were excellent - both orange and green. Chilaquiles looked amazing as did the Marcelo special. Everyone was very happy with their food and the flavors did not disappoint. Excellent spot a little bit tucked away from the main tourist street and Malecon - definitely recommend.
google avatar

Kathleen F.

Yelp
This place is a bit out of the tourist area, but so worth getting off the beaten path! The patio was just lovely, and I am still dreaming of the chilaquiles. So, so good! We will definitely be back the next time we are in Ensenada!
google avatar

Stephanie A.

Yelp
This place was my favorite restaurant in all my trip to Ensenada it was absolutely delicious service was amazing. The decor at this restaurant was so peaceful and it felt you were in a fancy forest if that even possible. Prices are amazing I got a breakfast coffee and mimosa for under 20$ Yes Please. You need to come here I highly recommend. I strongly recommend their mimosas they are made with FRESH squeezed orange juice undeniably the best mimosa I have ever had.

Rudeboy D.

Yelp
Good chill spot for breakfast and brunch they serve breakfast all day here which is good when u work long hours all week and only day off want to sleep in a bit and still get breakfast must check it out and also they sell quesos (cheese ) del rancho and other types of quality cheeses if your into that type of stuff.
google avatar

Alex R.

Yelp
Do not overlook this restaurant if in the area! Locality may seem deceiving and may look uninviting touristically, but do not be alarmed and stop by. The food was very tasteful and staff very attentive. I would have posted pictures of my experience, but was too busy soaking in the moment. Cheers Ensenada
google avatar

Alex C.

Yelp
plave is not worth it!!! rude staff mediocre food. caters to locals whit low standard dirty restrooms
google avatar

Frank B.

Yelp
Consistency, variety and quality come to mind when talking about the food, service and ambiance make this gem of a place worth the trip
google avatar

Myleen R.

Yelp
Cool place for a nice breakfast/brunch with a great outdoor seating. Got to seat outdoor in the patio under the guava and naranja tree. Come early, it gets pretty busy towards the end of brunch. Food was okay, needed more salt, but everything else was good for the price.
google avatar

Yvette V.

Yelp
My favorite spot in town, the staff is fantastic and the food is delicious, been eating there every time I visit Ensenada for the past 5 years and the quality never changed.

Yelp
Very cute outdoor vibes with fruit trees, snake plants, decor. Fresh squeezed orange brought nostalgia of when my mom made the same for me as a child. I ordered the chilaquiles verdes and the French toast. While we waited, we were served toast with cheese. It was very yummy! They always made sure our coffee was topped off! Restrooms were decent. Very cute place. Definitely order the French toast!

Lionel G.

Yelp
What a great breakfast spot! Food was delicious! Great flavors nice shade and plants. Loved eating in the patio, where you can help yourself to the fruit on the Guayaba tree. Not pictured, I also had their green juice (apple, cactus, orange juice ... and some other vegetable/s I don't remember).

Aaron O.

Yelp
Hi so when my family and I first came in we loved the energy and the ambiance but that quickly changed when we asked for cheese on the side and they forgot so we had to ask. Then we repeatedly asked for tortillas and the server gave it to two other tables before he ever got to us. My mom had to get up to ask because the tortillas never came. Also my sisters food was not good and she lost her appetite. Would not recommend.

Susana R.

Yelp
Enseñada, México has many hidden gems scattered all over. Our friends P&B who were our guides for the weekend brought us here for a burnch/lunch. Everyone was quite hungry as we all didn't eat that often for breakfast. Firstly, I believe when you travel anywhere in México, it helps if you have someone that can speak the main language. Plus, you can use this opportunity to learn as well. It was amazing to me as I learned Spanish back in school and I could still understand conversations though I'm definitely a bit rusty in conversation. The main thing that was v memorable besides the flavors of their food was their complimentary addicting bread with the cheese. The method they used for the cheese which possibly has avocado/cilantro sauce was just a wonderful combo with the bread. Even more so if you got the bread warm! I had shared a grilled lamb barbacoa with my girlfriend/guide P and it was good! The grilled lamb meat was in a green tomatillo sauce - v well flavored in my opinion, and we ate it with tortillas, decorated it with cilantro or onion and even a sprinkle of lime! It was like having your own grilled lamb barbacoa taco! The rest of our group ordered dishes such as the portobello - which was a huge and packed dish! Eggs sunny side up over a portobello mushroom gratin with fresh cheese and months aged cheese and spinach. Def a lot of flavor in this packed dish. My boyfriend and other friend ordered the Pesca del día (Fish of the day) - boyfriend ordered it rare and my friend well done. The presentations for these were both nicely done. Majority of the table were fans of the well done pesca del día as some of us seemed to prefer our fish cooked. My boyfriend did enjoy his dish, as he is a huge fan of sashimi. Okay service. I originally didn't have a plate earlier but eventually got one after asking twice with the help of our guides. The waiters do speak quite fast in Spanish, so be prepared. Bathrooms were alright. Parking was right around the corner. Would come again! It's a little bit of a small haven inside.

Yelp
Big Mexican breakfast in a lovely courtyard. High quality food, great experience. Kids were sad they didn't have pancakes when we were there but still enjoyed it.
google avatar

Yelp
My first time in Ensenada and was looking for a breakfast spot and turned to Yelp for recommendations and Casa Marcelo stood out. Upon arrival the vibe and atmosphere was inviting, we ordered Orange Juice and I could taste the freshness. Not long after that a man walked in with crates of oranges, I was in the right place. I ordered Chilaquiles Rojos con Barbacoa de borrego with scramble eggs and let me tell you that this was the best chilaquiles I've ever tasted in my life. Our hosts explained to us that the restaurant is associated with a ranch/farm and most if not all the fresh ingredients came from there. Definitely a must try!
google avatar

Katelyn R.

Yelp
This breakfast place was wonderful! It is cute and quaint on the patio with trees, plants, and brick. It masks the somewhat of a busy street corner that isn't very appealing. The coffee was good, and they served homemade bread with ricotta cheese, pesto, and a guacamole garnish. What a lovely treat, and it tasted fantastic! The menu has a lot of great options. I ordered the chilaquiles with green sauce and barbacoa (probably could have gone for a half size) but OMG was it delicious. The Verde sauce was flavorful with good consistency throughout and the barbacoa was delicious, as to be expected. I would recommend this place to locals or travelers in Ensenada!
google avatar

Hali M.

Yelp
Wow, Mexico has such better food than San Diego LOL. This place was great for breakfast on our way back to to the states. Although there was a wait around 10am, the food was worth the wait! They brought a delicious cheese and warm bread out when we first sat down. I could not stop eating it, it was delicious. Our meals were equally as delicious. We both had lamb. Also, go to the cute ice cream shop next door and get the pistachio ice cream for $1! I probably wouldn't go back here because there's so many great places to eat at in Mexico. But you should go if you haven't been!
google avatar

Shelby P.

Yelp
What a cute spot in Ensañada! Great al fresco dining vibes. The best chilaquiles I've ever had! Such fresh and delicious flavor, ordered salsa verde with both over easy egg and carnitas. Love the complimentary ricotta with pesto drizzle. Ingredients are locally sourced. Must try for breakfast!

Misael B.

Yelp
Food was really good, has been the last two times we came. Worth the wait, if you come on the weekends sometimes there is a wait.
google avatar

Myra D.

Yelp
Food and mimosas were great. The whole family enjoyed every dish that we had ordered. Absolutely delicious. Would recommend to any and everyone!!
