The 38 Best Restaurants in Montreal, Canada | Eater

"Montreal is home to the largest Haitian community in Canada, and its influence runs deep, especially in the food scene. The city brims with casual Haitian joints that specialize in marinated, braised, then fried pork known as griot — and everyone has their favorite. Sissi & Paul is a takeout-only spot in the Saint-Michel neighbourhood, a longtime Haitian hub, and it has occupied a place in the top tier since opening in 2015. The restaurant is known for griot, but it also serves outstanding chicken and cabrit (stewed goat) with fried plantains, tangy pikliz, and your choice of riz collé (rice with red kidney beans) or djon djon (rice with black mushrooms). Must-try dish: The moitié-moitié (half chicken, half griot), so you don’t have to choose between the proteins. Throw in some accras (malanga fritters), kibi (ground beef fritters), and a chilled Cola Couronne, and you’re looking at a Haitian feast that’s become a staple of Montreal life." - Valerie Silva

All the Best Places to Eat Haitian Food in Montreal | Bon Appétit

"A cozy, homestyle mom-and-pop in Saint-Michel decorated with Haitian art and playing Haitian music, offering warm service and straightforward comfort plates. Expect classic combos with macaroni salad, fried plantains, a side salad and pikliz; standout items include chicken served with riz djon djon and extra-crispy plantains, plus addictive kibbeh (kibi) croquettes made from bulgur and spiced ground beef—torpedo-shaped and hard to resist." - ByTerence Trouillot

Wow! I ordered the griot dish with rice and it was excellent. Everything was full of flavour and the price is very reasonable. The portion of the food was large too 🙂

Google
Sissi et Paul has the best griot in town, hands down. The food is always fresh, flavorful, and perfectly cooked. Every time I go, the quality is consistent and the portions are generous. It’s become one of my go-to spots in Montreal for authentic, delicious Haitian food. Highly recommended!

Google
Best customer service I have ever experienced in a carribean food place. They were polite, helpful and fast!!! I love haitian food and I am always willing to try new places. I tried this restaurant in August 2024 for the first time. The service was exceptional and I got my food in less than 5 minutes! The food: the portion was great, it included rice, salad, pasta salad, plantains and griot. The rice and potato salad was some of the best I have had and their sauce for the rice was perfect. The plantains were perfect and crisp. The griot was good... not thest best i had, maybe 3rd out of many many restaurants over the years but still good. I would not hesitate to return and try more on their menu. It is pick up/take out only and cash/interac only.

I am so so happy I came across this place. It’s in the top 3 Haitian restaurants I’ve ever had. The food is absolutely delicious and the service and hospitality I had from Fabiola and the team was so amazing. I will be a return customer and I recommend this place to everyone.

Google
Food is really good. I ordered chicken plate and it’s now one of my fav roasted chicken dishes in Montreal. The chicken came with a bowl of bean rice, a piece of sweet potato pancake, macaroni, salad, and two types of spicy sauce, all tasted really good. It took a while to wait, but it’s worth it. For the dining environment, tho the dining place isn’t big, it’s cozy enough. Staff is very friendly and the service is good. And the price is really fair!

Google
This place was recommended by several people and after trying it a few times now, I absolutely see why. The food is worth every penny!! The chicken, turkey, cabrit and griot 👌 And the prices are so reasonable. Service is fast and the staff is lovely.

Google
I ordered delivery and got the griot dish. It was incredibly tasty, I enjoyed everything. I just wish the mac and cheese was more, otherwise the salad was fresh rice was good and the meat was amazing.

Yelp
OMG.....what a great find... This place was listed on my Cheap Eats list for Montreal, so I decided to try. What a delight. As I walk in, the nice lady behind the counter welcomed me very friendly and after knowing that it was my first time in a Haitian restaurant, she recommended the Griot plate. I ordered it for take out, there's no dining in, so everything is take out. After I sat down, I started eating this delicious plate...what a delicacy...everything was done perfectly. The Griot was fried but not too crispy, it was tender and juicy on the inside, perfect to be douzed with the sauce that come on the side. There was plizki as well....the rice was moist, well seasoned and plentiful. The fried plantain was still crispy to the bite... Everything top notch, one of my best meals during my trip to Montreal....

Yelp
Hole-in-the wall, I almost couldn't find the restaurant due to the street construction. There's no dine-in, it's take-out only. These are the only faults I can report about this gem of a restaurant. The menu is in French yet the staff were extremely friendly and able to converse and make recommendations in English, so tourists do not be afraid. *Griot: Pork, braised and fried, Haitian style. Full of well balanced flavor. Texture is chewy yet somehow juicy at the same time. *Cabrit: Goat meat. The meat marinade perfectly balances the gamey aroma of the goat so you can enjoy the flavor without sensing any funny smells. Texture is similar to the griot. Both entrees we ordered came with rice (really well seasoned), fried plantains, pasta, salad, pikliz (it's spicy!), sauce. Everything was unbelievably delicious. The portion sizes were absolutely insane and I felt so bad about not being able to finish my food because I had to fly out. It's going to be hard to find Haitian food this good elsewhere. I'm going to be thinking about this restaurant for years to come.

Yelp
Fantastic, delicious Haitian cuisine. No nonsense, direct and simple. Low key spot with incredible food

Francis S.

Yelp
Délicieux! Meilleur griot de Montréal. Pour emporter seulement. Je recommande fortement

Mehdi G.

Yelp
Service à la clientèle est nulle , la caissière est vraiment méchante !!! Customer service sucks, the cashier is really mean

Yelp
Do yourself a favor and get your next meal from this amazing place. It's takeout, it comes out fast, and it's exquisite. Next time I'm in Montreal I plan on eating here at least once. Maybe every day. And I'm going to dream of the black mushroom rice until I return.

Yelp
A local gem hiding in a takeout spot covered by construction. The place is constantly moving with a known clientele. I ordered the cabrit (goat) which is fried good and fatty like goat is supposed to be. It is trimmed of fat though which is a positive. While the plate was pricy for what I would pay it is not lacking in style or substance. There was a multitude of components on the plate including sauce, mac salad, pikliz and salade

Yelp
Might be the best Haitian food in the city, I'm my go to when I'm craving Haitian food. I've had the fish, lambie, legumes, griot and goat and I still can't tell which one I prefer.

Yelp
My go-to for Haitian food. Hands down. This place has a homey atmosphere, where you can eat in or take out. Me and a friend came here for lunch, where we ordered the griot (fried pork) plate, which comes with rice and beans, salad, macaroni, plantain and spicy sauce! It's a great plate to try for first timers for Haitian food. The pork was very flavourful and juicy paired very well with the spicy vinegar sauce and the bean rice. The macaroni and cheese was simple and balanced well with the rest of the dish. Overall, the cozy atmosphere, the friendly workers, the flavourful food and fair prices makes this place worth a try.

Yelp
The food was delicious and the customer service was great. I didn't have to fight for pikliz. The amount of food they give you is enough to eat for a couple days. I would definitely recommend this restaurant. The only downside is that because of the construction outside you may not find the restaurant using the gps. Will definitely try this place again on my next visit to Montreal

Yelp
Firstly - the staff is very welcoming, I walked in 15 minutes before closing for take out and they welcomed me in. It's a mom and pop place and those places are known to be THE BEST. Secondly, the portion is beyond generous - I personally took the Griot plate and I took the large one cause - you know... I was hungry. Sufficed to say - my meal was so flavourful and the meat was tender !! Highly recommend this place if you love Haitian food or you're new to it. It is DELICIOUS.

Yelp
This food is amazing. We know haïtien food and this is good. We gave 5* because the food taste good, it's not too expensive and the portions are HUGE.

Yelp
Best haitian food i've had in my life. Since its far from my house i called forst to know the schedule & the lady on the phone was more than nice. I had the small griot (which wasnt small at all). The griot was so tender & the onions that came with it were so spicy yummm.

Yelp
We came to Montreal for 1 night to sight-see and see family. Found this restaurant on Yelp and the good reviews were all right! Got the tassot (goat) with rice and comes with several other sides including acra which was amazing. Kid you not the food was not only well presented but sooo delicious. My husband is Haitian and it got his 100% seal of approval as well. The hostess was super pleasant and we appreciated her attentiveness and courteousness. If you're thinking of going to a Haitian restaurant and wondering which to go to, definitely go here! You will not be disappointed!

Faisal R.

Yelp
Ok, this is my go to place for Haitian. The griot and the cabri is what I recommend! Super tender and flavourful. Chicken is good too. I use to go to meli melo but they lost the touch with their riz collé. I mean I'm not Haitian but the rice needs to be on point. This place knows what they're doing! It's a family business, so you know that the elderly family is cooking in the back. On weekends you can get the delicious Djon djon rice. Worth it. And of course portions are more than generous. This place is a gem!

Yelp
This was the first time I tried Haitian food, and it won't be the last ! I had the griot, which came with salad, rice, pasta salad and fried plantains. The portion was MASSIVE despite it being the small version, I was way full by the end. The griot and fried plantains were absolutely perfect. The reason for the 4 stars is cause the rice and pasta were pretty bland. But will return for the griot and plantaines no hesitation!

Chacha S.

Yelp
Best Haitian in Montreal bar none. If you visiting family that's the place to get a home cooked meal without the trouble of cooking it.
google avatar

Nico L.

Yelp
A hidden gem! Generous portions for the price! Food was tasty and spiced to perfection. We both had griot (for the first time might I add) and loved it. The riz djon djon was to die for. The service was warm and friendly. There is no menu per se. The waiting recited the items that were available for the day. I'm already looking forward to coming back.

Roseline J.

Yelp
I'm from NY and I visited that restaurant couple weeks ago . Their food is excellent!

Ace Z.

Yelp
Just the old saying, "do not judge a book by its cover," that was the case this Haitian resto. It's my first time from there and definitely will not the last time. That tasso cabrit is on point, not over cooked or fried. I thought I was eating a piece of steak; that's how soft and it was in my mouth. I recommend you to just give it a try. Keep up the great job Sassi and Paul. Vive pritay Haitian!

Sagine G.

Yelp
SO GOOD ! the portion of the griot and the chicken was so big and it was the small plate. really worth my money. i'll come back for sure

Yelp
Delicious to say the least. The food is very affordable, in fact, the prices are definitely lower than any other Haitian restaurant in Montreal, but the quality is still top notch. The portions are very generous, you will most likely have enough for two meals rather than one. It's also easily accessible, being right next to the Iberville metro station on the blue line. All in all, one could not ask for more out of Haitian food.

Yelp
So delicious if you wanna gain extra pounds :) really enjoyed our meal there. Bon bagay
