First dine out Vancouver 2023 experience, and I gotta say, I'm not impressed with the menu and service on this one.
It's sad because this use to be one of my favorite restaurants in Vancouver. I loved the ambience and food back then, it was hippy, contemporary with a character. After they moved to the expanded location, the decor is pretty westernized, with big window, and wood frame doors and table, open kitchen concept etc. I mean, It does make the room look more spacious, however, it lost the original accent.
The dine out menu was decent, nothing too outstanding, except the big portion. I had the Les Scampis for my appetizer. The shrimps were tender and fresh, they are accompanied with a jerk spice butter sauce, had a Caribbean flavor to it. There were also some raw cauliflower and slices jalapeño, which added more spice and flavor to this dish. I'm glad that I'm able to handle spicy food, but I can see how others may dislike this dish with the spicy level being flared up. My hubby had the Le Boeuf, the Chicago-style hanger steak, cippolini onion rings, pine nuts, candied morels, truffle mayo, grated parmesan. The flavors were well incorporated, and the beef was tender as well.
Moving on to the entree, I had Moules Frites 'Congolaise' , mussels with tomato coconut cream, smoked Chili, lime and cilantro. It has always been my favorite, and the flavor was exactly the same as 10 years ago! Pairing with some pomme frites was perfect. In contrast, my hubby's Les Boulettes de Chevreuil, venison meatballs with ricotta and goat cheese gnocchi, was very dry and bland. There wasn't much flavor too it, other than being gamey. He was very disappointed with it.
Finally the dessert we chose Poire et Chocolat, which is the baked ganache with chestnut, cream mulled wine pear compote, praliné caramel sauce. It was very cream but on the sweet side. I couldn't finish it with it being too sweet.
My hubby ordered the Plateau de Fromage, which came with three different type of cheese, some grapes, and lavash crackers. In both of our opinions, this shouldn't be on the dessert menu at all, it was very heavy after another heavy meal. He could barely finish one piece of cheese!
What really made us felt disappointed was the services. Our server apparently was new, but his attitude was definitely not. As soon as I sat down, I overheard him telling the table beside us to better order everything on the menu all at once because they have a very busy night, and the kitchen is busy, which implied that they are just trying to flip the table quickly. Then when we asked him about some recommendations on the cocktails, he claimed that he's new and don't know too much about it, which was very odd, and he didn't even want to find out any info for us. After the meal, we asked the bill and rest for a like 5 minutes. He came over and stood in front of us very awkwardly after paying the bill, and basically told us to leave right away because there was another large party of 7, and they need to push our table to combine with the rest of them in the same row. The message came off rude, and ignorant. We felt rushed and unwanted. With this type of services, I might as well do a grab-and-go, why bother to do a dine out?!
There it goes my favorite restaurant use-to-be. I'm very disappointed by how commercialized it has become. Maybe I'm just getting old, and have a higher standard with the service industry. Either way, we won't be back, unless I crave for their mussels again, but I'll have to order a pick up. They might not even have a table for us after all!
