Really great mapo tofu, string beans, cucumber salad, and white rice. the coconut drink was also really good. It's nice that they have the sit down option now. I'll definitely be coming back!

Not sure what the heck just went down, but I was charged $16 for a tiny 4 piece chicken, the lady bringing it out to me couldnt believe they were getting away with it... (the photo makes it look very big) rice for 4$ ??? simply greedy. left hungry

This place is so good. Mapo tofu is delicious, after I had it for the first time I couldn’t stop thinking about it.

Stoked to see they are opening for dine-in again! Highly recommend the Dan Dan noodles and the smoked plum drink (good enough to get alone). Some good veg options available but you may have to ask for the veg version specifically. Sadly no veg dishes have been quite as amazing as the Dan Dan but we can't have everything I guess. Love love love this place, some of the best food in Greenpoint hands down.

Wonderfully delicate as a cloud of tofu, I recommend it. Lots of flavor and spices. Strongly spicy dish, but tasty, although it may be too spicy for someone ......... Very fast and friendly service. I generally recommend this place to lovers of Chinese cuisine in a modern edition.

Great experience! Totally worth it. Modern open kitchen with plenty of space. The seating is limited to 10-12 chairs. The chef and the host were friendly and welcoming. Top notch quality of the fish and meat(wagyu). Service and presentation was excellent.

I’d hate to over-hype it, but this is probably my favorite restaurant in Greenpoint right now. Probably shouldn’t be surprised that a place that featured a highly-regarded omakase was able to carry over the talent, ingredient quality, and attention to detail over to normal take-out food. My girlfriend and I went two days in a row. Everything on the menu is a home run (even enjoyed the Mapo Tofu, and I usually avoid tofu like the plague). If someone told me this place was flirting with a Michelin star, I wouldn’t be shocked.

Genuinely some of the best Sichuan I’ve ever had. The Mapo Tofu and Dan Dan Noodles are must gets and everything is very modestly priced for how unbelievably good the food is. Cannot recommend highly enough.

Chiko is my FAVORITE restaurant in Greenpoint!!!!!!!! The Mapo Tofu over rice is my go to order and anytime someone ask for a recommendation, I send them here!! Having experience both take out and dining in the service is always great. I LOVE THIS PLACE & YOU SHOULD TOO!

Excellent takeout joint in Greenpoint. They have a small menu which I'm guessing they experiment with from time to time. Their current menu has a wicked mapo tofu, might just be the best I have ever had. A tofu noodle( they have a chicken version too) which is heavy on the Szechuan peppercorn but also has a significant sour umaminess to it with the very familiar numbing feel which may or may not appeal to everyone. The tofu is large, soft and pillowy and soaks up the broth beautifully. I noticed the flavor actually getting better and better with every bite. The noodles have a good bite to them and stay consistently firm throughout the meal. The garlic green beans side was simple and also very delicious. Will most definitely order again!

Loved this place till today when I pulled a staple out of my mouth. a trip to the ER is not my idea of a chill night in. Maybe work on your food safety because this is not cool.

This is an absolute must if you live in Greenpoint for takeout. If they had eat in seating I'd recommend it to everyone but it's their loss! The prices are so generous for the quality of food. The menu is very specific and all incredible, but the mapo tofu specifically has had a chokehold on me. Can't wait to try even more things when seasonal dishes and drinks come out.

WOW! Just got take out form Chiko for the first time and I'm a total convert. I ordered with mapo tofu with mushrooms and it was delicious! The right amount of spice, wonderful textures, and a huge portion. Totally worth the price and may be a new go to for a hearty dinner!

What a gem of a sichan place! Constant rotating menu with their maple tofu being the only seemingly permanent staple so far. Everything I've had there is delicious. So far it's only been take out only and there's one table outside but i heard recently they started having indoor dining again. I don't know if they will ever convert the restaurant back to an omakase concept, I kind of hope not because this really is an outstanding sichuan place, it's what mission Chinese hoped to be. Small focused menu, always a plus for me.

The restaurant is currently operating with a limited menu, and with take out only. Food is conveniently packaged for take out. The dumplings were really good, and the noodles were mostly tasty but the broth was a bit too sour for my tastes.

My favorite place in all of NYC to get a lunch or dinner bowl. I can't emphasize how amazing their flavors are and I haven't had a disappointing meal from them. The only time I'm disappointed is when their apps are sold out lol! They're menu changes upon season. And don't sleep on the home made chili. It's better than lao gan ma.

Authentic Chinese food that's fairly priced. It's nice and cozy inside and the staff were polite and efficient as well.

Great Greenpoint spot to grab a quick meal. Everything is packed with flavor, and they accommodate asking for mild spice levels which I appreciate! Menu is small, highly recommend the mapo tofu and the spicy wontons. Great price for NYC food in general and esp for the portion size and how good this is.

Good service and very good food. You can tell the chef really put a lot of thought into the flavor combinations and some of the plates I thought were quite unique. There were a few home runs and a few average pieces. The ambiance is a little austere and had too much empty space. Why only 3 stars? Honestly, because we left very hungry. At this price point, it's not really forgivable to leave without being full. I would actually give 2 stars, but I really liked the chef and appreciate what he's trying to do; at the same time, I wouldn't recommend this place for that reason. Just one "filler" course of perhaps a rice or udon dish would have done it. Honestly, a bowl of fried rice would have helped. The pieces had very little shari which may have been partly why. As it was, my friend and I left hungry and fairly disappointed, so do what you will with this information!

I'll be honest. I found Chiko through Yelp and it was such a good suggestion (woohoo!). I came here for my birthday celebration with the bf and it was just mind blowing. We knew it was not your traditional omakase with just sushi pieces so we were fully prepped and excited for the meal hehe. Omakase list: - Foie-rrero - Hamachi (this was really good, I'd want another plate of this if I can - look at the photo!) - Robusuta (this was also mind blowing omg. The taste of the lobster with the truffle was UNBELIEVABLE) - Negitoro - Akami (duuuuuude - this was bomb af. This really hit the spot because Chef Xiao actually smoked the piece of tuna and the smokiness worked EXTREMELY WELL with tuna. I think this was probably my favorite or second favorite dish in this entire omakase) - Hirame - Shima Aji - Madai - Uni (um ok. This is either my favorite or second favorite out of this entire omakase. And this uni piece had caviar on it.. the flavors were just so unreal and exploded into my mouth. I can't even explain it. The uni tasted so fresh too UGH. I love it and would've ordered another one if I had room lol) - Hotate (yum) - Oh Toro (very interesting because I've never had olive in japanese cuisine and it surprisingly worked well). - Wow-gyu - Sichuan Conclusion - 100% would come back when the menu changes. I feel like Chef Xiao is experimental with Japanese cuisine and infuses different methods into food. And most importantly - it works well (I mean duh. He wouldn't serve it if it didn't work well right? lmao)

This place is the definition of a neighborhood gem. Ordered the Ma Po Tofu and the wonton appetizer and now cannot wait to go back to order everything else on their menu. We ordered for pickup and the food was ready within 15 minutes. It was piping hot when we brought it back home and was DELICIOUS. Hot, tasty, spicy, with very generous portions. Highly recommend.

Such an amazing and talented chef! The food was excellent with every fish dish. Well balanced. Distinctive, and the rice temperature was consistent, which if you're a big fan of sushi you'd know it's hard to achieve. And my god, the flavors, each bite the mix of flavors, rice, freshness of each fish piece was just amazingly well done. The chef told us most of the fish was dry-aged, to overcome the distance from Japan. You can't always expect a fresh catch from Japan or from the west coast all the time, so he worked with each type of fish to bring out its best amount of fat, taste and texture. The result is that each piece is full of flavor and still tastes so fresh and yummy. I also really appreciate that he uses what is locally available and that he tries to work with different fish, to bring out the best of each fish. Most sushi restaurants in NYC pride themselves in getting the freshest fish from Japan or somewhere else, and they never use the constraint of the distance to work for them and make the fish taste even better. Creative, freshness, special, distinctive, ... are the few words I can think to describe this sushi restaurant. Twelve courses plus a dessert was plentiful. The only weak part of the entire menu is probably the dessert, they can definitely work on it. We had the Sichuan ice cream with chocolat piece and sea salt, but the ice cream does not taste spicy and the chocolate can be fresher as well. But to find such a gem in Greenpoint is just a treat.

What an underrated omakase sushi restaurant tucked away in Greenpoint! All seats are counter seats, and the restaurant doesn't really seat more than 15 or so, so you'll definitely have a more intimate and quiet experience. The interior is modern yet minimal, and had a nice amount of sunset light streaming in through the front windows. The starting bite was so good. It was shaped like a Ferrero Rocher, but was made of foie gras and chocolate. The rest of the pieces were really delicious too, and there was a good balance of creativity and fresh fish. The wagyu course was incredible, and I loved the selection of salts. I'd definitely come back here when they change up the menu!

Writing a review on two things. Firstly food taste. I could've made better rice and tofu at home and I was floored at the price. It wasn't a good spice combo and just left overtly peppercorn taste in my mouth. Portion size was good but for the price the taste is really not up to par. Secondly I witnessed someone who manages or works at the business follow one of my neighbors around the block and start screaming at them. I'm sitting there confused. All to find out the woman was yelling that the person let their puppy pee near the establishment. For those that know.. you can't know exactly when and where puppies will pee. And from what my neighbor explained to me, the pee was on the sidewalk feet from the doorway. To follow and ridicule someone who's just going on a stroll is pathetic. Based on witnessing that interaction alone I don't want to go back...

Came here with my sushi lover friend but left kinda disappointed. I personally is a big fan of traditional omakase but my friend really likes creative style - we have been to more than 20 omakase places in NYC and this place is not the one we will come again. Walking into this place we got a very warm welcome. I like the decoration on the wall. The light here is very dim and the ambient music is somewhat "Starbucks Jazz" style... the first impression I had was that it didn't look like a Japanese restaurant - everything in the open area/kitchen you saw all the preparation equipments in metal/stainless steel. Only 6 people in the counter seats. The first dish we had was the Foie-Reero, made with goose liver, walnut and chocolate. The piece itself tasted great but it's little odd to be served at the very beginning- it's like dessert and very heavy. Then we had a few "fish in broth" dishes which were very special and delicately prepared. The sushi nigiri was a big disappointment to us. I understand each place has own recipes on rice and flavor. But the rice here was falling apart- not tender not fluffy... and it tasted a bit too sour to me. I believe the fish itself was good but the flavor of soy and other ingredients and spice were too strong that mask the original freshness. Overall I feel it's a bit like mixture of several good ingredients but the outcome is special and odd. So if u are a fan of traditional sushi omakase, I won't recommend u come here at all. But if you like modern creative style you might wanna give it a try and made some comparison to other places like Ishikawa...

We came here for the soft opening yesterday. We heard about this new spot from a family member who shared the menu with us. (I think there are changes to the menu every week). We were impressed by chef Xiao's creativity. The fish were super fresh. I believe most of the fish is flown in from Japan. Some of the fish was aged to perfection for the courses. My favorite course was the "home run". This piece consisted of the three types of tuna, which melted in my mouth with caviar on top. How fancy? The entire menu has some fusion...Italian and French influence. For example, mackerel with shaved cheese. That's a first! This is not your traditional sushi spot. It's different in a good way. Service was good. We came as a party of four and had the entire restaurant to ourselves, probably due to the long weekend (labor day). The restaurant is quite spacious. I believe there are 15 seatings. Overall, this spot is definitely worth a try. I would recommend to all my seafood and sushi lovers out there. I will be back.

Delivers extremely well. Decent spice levels on everything. My only tiny qualm is the level of Szechuan peppercorns overwhelms otherwise great dishes sometimes. After having the entire menu, mapo tofu is my go-to. Locally, I don't think anyone does it better.

Everything was amazing! I loved that there was a story/inspiration to each of the dishes - it really makes you feel like the food is a work of art! My favorites were fish vs. fat, wave, ocean egg, home run, and Coney Island. I love the minimal aesthetic of the restaurant as well. It's fine dining without the stuffiness. Definitely will be coming back!!

I took my friend here for her birthday. We were very impressed. The food was incredible and creative - from the first course all the way through to the last. Chef Xiao and his staff were friendly and knowledgeable; they explained each course and answered any questions. Chiko is currently BYOB with no corkage fee (pending liquor license). I believe the menu changes according to season. Will definitely be back to try out the new items on menu!

Glad I finally tried this place! I picked up a little menu a while back and was reminded today on Instagram that today was the last day to try the Three Cup Chicken before rotating their menu. I ordered the Three Cup Chicken, plus the braised pork dish as well, and so glad I did. The food was all amazing. There's also not much boba up here in Greenpoint and they have such reasonably priced $3 milk tea bobas. I am excited to try their next menu.

Really interesting and creative take on omakase. The dishes are all uniquely prepared with very robust flavors. The chef and server are both incredibly hospitable and share their obvious passion and knowledge of each dish very deliberately and delicately. I would say the atmosphere while lacking a bit of nuance is very well kempt and unpretentious. The quiet environment demands your attention at the bar and focused on the performance. The experience lasts about 2hrs in total. I would say my favorite was the Yellowtail and the Tasmanian trout.

My review is a bit dated as I dined at Chiko about 3-4 months ago. At the time there were only 7 other people dining while we were there (it was still during the soft opening I believe) and it felt very intimate. Not sure if it's still the case but at the time it was BYOB. We were highly impressed by Chef Xiao and his team. Chef Xiao was very attentive, explained each course and answered all of our questions. The fish was very fresh and flown from Japan. The place is not traditional sushi and had some very interesting twists (e.g. mackerel and shaved parmigiano). It's a great place to bring a date or for special occasions. Highly recommend it and will be back for sure.

I don't know how to describe it but Chef Xiao's menu is exquisite. He perfectly blends different flavors to produce a kaiseki that is out of this world. It's a blend of sublime ingredients such as aged tuna, Kumamoto oysters, and Tiger's milk. I've known Xiao since his days at Dojo but this menu extends way beyond typical omakase. Honesty, Xiao was probably under-utilized as a sushi chef at Dojo. Now at Chiko, he can implement his own creative direction on a menu that tells an entire story, wave by wave.

Great new gem. Amazing dinner. Exceptionally creative kiseki menu. Each dish packed with a deep variety of flavors. Lots of dishes I've never come across before. Owners are friendly and create a warm atmosphere at this new spot .

My fiance and I had the pleasure of dining here many months ago, and I still haven't been able to get that meal out of my head. I can't remember the play by play of every thing we ate like some of the other reviewers, due to it being months ago. But I do remember that every single tasting was incredible, and unique. We were really blown away by the quality of what we were eating and also the amazing hospitality we experienced. My fiance in particular always has a problem with small portions, but even he felt satisfied at the end of the meal. I loved the intimate restaurant setting, and also the fact that we could bring our own bottle of wine. We stayed a little after everyone left to just chat with the chef and his lovely wife. The whole night was very, very special and I hope we can return soon.

Got last minute delivery from Chiko. Dan dan noodles were amazing!!! Was shocked at how delicious my last minute delivery choice turned out. Will definitely visit in person. A+ on presentation as well.

I am very torn between giving this restaurant 3 or 4 stars. I want to support the chef's work, but I do not think it is a complete canvas the way it currently stands. Here is what was 4/5 stars: -The first few dishes were perfectly executed. My boyfriend and I were scraping the bottom of our small bowls for more broth. -The chef was amazingly personable and nice, he was the only employee there, chef and server. -The space is interesting, no more than 10 seats at the bar. Here is what was 2/3 stars: - Some of the flavor combinations were off. The Madai (strawberry), Hotate (corn), and Spicy (too spicy/not sweet for the only dessert) to call them out by name. -The quantity of food for the price. A little on the high side. Only one dessert option. -The dessert, unfortunately the ice cream was...icy (as in not mixed properly) - The sake and wine options were not ideal. We tried all the options by the glass and thought they were all very heavy and did not compliment the dishes well.

You would never think that an omakase restaurant would be in this part of town. You'd assume these types of restaurant would only be found on the other side of the East River. I'm glad Chef Xiao took the risk and opened this Amazing establishment in Green Point BK!! First things first, this is NOT your traditional Jiro omakase counter. Where the acclaimed chef slaps a piece of fatty toro over rice and serves it you. At this place, Chef Xiao marries traditional Japanese with Western flavors and techniques. Some dishes, he even deconstructs some of our most memorable dishes from the past and fuses it up with his own touch! Food was delicious! Creativity was over the top! Presentation was on point! I normally never take pics of my food, but DAMN!!! I HAD TOO for Chef Xiao's master piece creations! I'll definitely be back for your Spring tasting! Thank you for an awesome experience!

What an experience! I can't forget the combination of flavours and the amazing fresh fish served at this restaurant. Service is amazing, everything is run by the chef and his wife. A few reviews here indicate that the amount of food is not enough. I felt it was just perfect! Can't wait to go back for the new menu.

Amazing Omakase experience, my favorite in NYC thus far and I've lived here for 7 years! Chef Xiao is extremely talented at fusing unique flavors together, and every one of the 13 courses is a delight for your senses. Super impressed by the attentive staff and chef, it was like having a private coursed meal. Loved the vibe. Will definitely be back!

A fun, intimate dinner and it's BYOB for now! We had the tasting menu and it was a carefully crafted, tasty and creative dishes. The two person team works well and I never felt like I was waiting. I was pretty full by the end of the meal, but I could see some people feeling like that would not be enough food.

Japanese at its finest! Awesome restaurant, this is 2 Michelin star food at least. Very Nice chef, who makes you feel welcome, and is able to mix western flavors very subtle with Japanese dishes.

Outstanding creative Japanese set menu. Very creative and tasty small nigiri bites of many varieties of fish with trout roe and truffles and kumquat and ... all beautifully presented, topped off with a perfect wagyu beef bite and a most delicious vanilla ice cream with a hint of wasabi and sea salt and lime zest. Each small bite was more delicious than the other. Frankly, have recently eaten at the no. 2 and no. 4 restaurants in the world and the food and service here was as good if not better (and I am not given to exaggeration). Serene space in the middle of nowhere in Greenpoint. I am just worried that this place is not financially sustainable at this location for the kind of very high quality and intimate scale (just 12 or so places) at which it operates. Folks please go visit - this is a gem that deserves a Michelin Star.

Great omakase experience. Loved watching chef xiao work his magic, and his dishes were creative and delicious. Great ambience and attentive service. Recommended!

Went for a Chef's Counter 13 course tasting. The food was incredible and the service and atmosphere were worth the price. The food was a mix of thoughtful creativity and top-shelf sushi. Hamachi, toro, uni on a shiso pancake, and a dish with medai called Leche de Tigre were the ones that blew me away. Day aged mackeral was also super. They are BYOB for now. I have never done omakase before but the experience of eating piece by piece over 2.5 hours was very special. Not something I can afford every day but it is awesome to have something this caliber in the neighborhood. They still seem to be in an extended soft opening -- there were only six guests the whole night and the chef said they are looking to hire but haven't found the right person. PS -- wasabi ice cream

This place is so unique. I've ordered twice with two totally different menus (they change the region of China each few weeks/months). They made a Szechuan steamed tofu vegetable dish really exciting, as well as various chicken and pork dishes I've had. You're guaranteed a good meal here

Truly an incredible dining experience, and one of only two Yelp reviews I've ever felt compelled to write (the other being Casa Enrique). The service, the experience, and the food were all incredible. The space itself is a bit raw, but still nice. Chef Xiao is a remarkable talent. His back story (I recommend you ask about it live) is colorful and unique. His creativity finds its way into every dish. IMO 11 out of the 13 dishes were truly phenomenal (the other two were step down, but still very good). The toro and wagyu were especially amazing (I ordered extra a la carte). For now it's BYOB with no corkage (which is actually fun). I recommend you pick up the Rose Sake from Duke's Liqour Box which is a few blocks away. All in all, I think it's only a matter of time before this becomes a real destination and therefore very hard to get into. Enjoy it while you can!

Dinner at Chiko was incredibly thoughtful, delicious, and most importantly fun. The long bar is the perfect place to enjoy dinner as you see and hear from the chef. Impeccable designed from the decor to the composition of the dishes. Standout dishes included the Coney Island which features scallop, uni, and truffle, the foie gras pebbles, and the funky and fresh course featuring aged fish and Parmesan. Chiko is the premier dining destination in Greenpoint. Very happy they are here in the neighborhood.

Came here for the soft opening. Fantastic meal. The thirteen course tasting menu was amazing. Chef Xiao shows his expertise as well as his creativity in all his dishes. He's also very friendly and loves to share his knowledge and experiences.

I am somewhat hesitant to do this because this place is so special, I almost want to keep it to myself. This place is a hidden gem that I hope anyone looking for omakase should try. Walking down Manhattan Avenue you would never guess what is inside from the exterior. Chef Xiao has carefully planned every part of this place. The pace is clean and simple but with an elegance that is the opposite of the rough storefront. A long wooden counter divides the room between the diner and the chef who isn't just preparing food but entertaining and educating you about the process. John Coltrane and other jazz plays in the background making you feel like you are in some kind Murakami novel. And the ultimate reward is the menu. I wish I could do it justice but it was one of the best meals I have ever had from start to finish. Each course brings something new and wonderful, which makes it worth every penny and makes me hope it will be there for a long time.

Ordered from Chiko a few times since COVID. Tried basically everything on the small Szechuan menu and everything was fabulous. The Mapo Tofu is stellar, not to be missed. I also loved the beef dish and the sake mojito. Looking forward to what comes next when they change up the menu in September. A wonderful choice when ordering food to go down to the park and enjoy a sunset.

So not new to great places but new to spending time to write reviews on places if they are either great or really bad. I won't waste time on average reviews. Chiko was my first ever review and now my first repeat. Came back with high expectations and they delivered. Some tweaks and adjustments to the menu from last time that were great. Demonstrates the chef is truly creative and willing to change. Will leave it to others to describe each dish but almost recommend that you don't study the menu so you enjoy the surprising flavors. Also - staff is super nice Gloria and Jessica make you feel special. Keep it up Chiko!

Great food we meet Xiao as our chef very nice guy teach how to taste the food in a different way if you like Japanese food this is a must try believe me you'll like it a lot.

Chef Xiao and his wife,Grace, treated us to an extraordinary event, more than a meal. We recommend it for special events in your life, like Thursdays. The price does not equal the quality, the hospitality or the resulting memories. It would be worth it at twice the price. Go now, go often.

Best meal I've had in New York. The fish is incredible + great experience. I trust you Chef Xiao!
