NYC’s Best Takeout & Delivery For A (Quarantine) Date Night - New York - The Infatuation

"Red velvet pancakes are, perhaps, the most romantic pancakes, and Chocolate in Harlem serves them with a side of fried chicken. You can even get them for dinner - and you absolutely should, especially if you’re trying to show someone that you care about their happiness and wellbeing. Add some lamb chops, crab cakes, or a burger, and that’s a fairly well-rounded meal. You can place your order online, or give the restaurant a call at 212-222-4545." - bryan kim

Joan Coukos’s Flatiron atelier turns out elegant, globally inspired bonbons like the Kimono Collection. Time Out and other critics have long admired its craftsmanship; the upstairs showroom remains open with set hours.

Google
In an unassuming building on the 9th floor, there is this wonderfully unique chocolate shop. On my way home, I wanted to grab chocolates for my wife’s birthday. Luckily in my search between my office and penn station, I found Chocolat Moderne. I had the pleasure of meeting Jim, who is the kindest gentleman. I believe we was the owner or the husband of the founder. He helped me curate a wonderful box of heart shaped chocolates tailored to her tastes. He also beautifully wrapped the chocolates. She loved them all. I’m so glad I found my go to chocolate shop nearby that also allows me to support a small business. I highly recommend to all chocolate lovers.

Google
How was I unaware of this exquisite chocolate!? This shop has been here for years and even scored a feature in the New York Times, yet I was surprised to find it… like some confectionery speakeasy hiding in plain sight. Each bite was a tiny, silky portal to a better dimension where everything is rich, velvety, and dusted with discovery.

Google
The best chocolate shop in NYC!!! Had a wonderful conversation and experience with Jim. If you’re looking for a great gift or just delicious and beautifully decorated chocolates, please come here! They have flavors for everyone ranging from liquor to Japanese flavors such as shiso and adzuki beans. Wonderful wonderful place, 10/10 would recommend

Google
This is some of the most thoughtful, delicious, and exquisite chocolate I have ever had the pleasure of eating. In an unassuming business in Chelsea, on the 9th floor, you will find this beautiful wonderland of pure magic. I have now been back 2x and will continue to not only visit for my indulgence, but anytime I need any gift, or want to show love to someone, Chocolat Moderne is my go to!

Google
Very interesting place hidden in Manhattan. Wide variety of chocolate flavors, nice people too.

Google
Amazing selection of chocolates in a random, nondescript building. They have a great selection of bonbons and their monkey bars are equally as amazing. Sampled a couple of bon bons, the pistachio one was my favorite. Bought a box of bonbons for my boyfriends grandma and got ourselves a black sesame monkey bar. The monkey bar was vegan but you can't even tell! Highly recommended.

Google
Such a cute shop and it was a great place to get a truly personalized gift. The owner spent 30+ mins patiently helping me put together a custom chocolate box for my wife and mother-in-law, customizing it down to the ribbon color on the box. The quality of the chocolate is super high and the different flavors are interesting and unique. Will definitely be back the next time I'm in NYC!

Google
I love coming here for my sister & mothers birthdays, and respective other holidays and occasions like mothersday. Just visited a few days ago and for the first time I didn't see Joan at the front!!!. Glad the old couple gets a break haha. Bought a coral box for the first time and my friends at the sake bar loved it.

Yelp
A genuine hidden gem in the Flatiron district...a ALL of NYC! If you love someone deeply there are so many delicious options to show it! If you're looking for a love potion...same answer! There are so many choices to make whether you prefer bergamot, praline, cherry, hazelnut...the options are endless!!! The quality is visibly obvious as is the experience when enjoying them! A sandwich board on the street indicates you need to go to the 9th floor to discover your one stop shop for exceptional chocolates. Heck...love yourself and snag some!!!

Yelp
Hate to give away NYs best kept secret but this is the best place for handcrafted and innovative chocolate flavors. These are a huge hit for holiday gifts and especially take the advent calendar to a whole nother level :p The Japanese inspired collection was a winner- mango caramel with vanilla bean is my fave.

Yelp
Great chocolates. Wonderful service. You take an elevator to the 9th floor which feels like a boutique chocolate adventure. Open the door to find a pristine operation with a beautiful display. Welcome to the chocolate speakeasy. Free samples and I was sold. Planning to order online next. Highly recommend.

Yelp
Truly a hidden gem in Flatiron, I would have never found this location without Happy Cow. Located on the 9th floor of 27th West 20th. Sometimes they leave a sign out on the street. 12 beautiful options for vegan. I tried the hazelnut praline which was incredible! Chocolate itself is not too sweet which I like, packed with flavor. I also bought a 24 piece with two of each as a gift. Note some flavors contains liquor. The Joan, chocolatier has been working out of this location for 20 years. She and her associate was so sweet and helpful. You can also order online!

Yelp
I love a cherry cordial but for some reason these did not "hit" the way I was expecting from the reviews. I really wish people were more honest in their reviews.

Yelp
My goodness. This is a gem of a place. And Robert! What a wonderful guide through this magical chocolate world. This will be a stop on any NYC visit for us. Thank you for a truly special experience.
google avatar

Hayward L.

Yelp
Cannot recommend this hidden gem highly enough! Run by a lovely husband and wife duo, they make some of the best gourmet chocolate I've had in NYC. Forget the overpriced chocolatiers on Fifth Ave, they have amazingly unique and creative flavors at a reasonable price point. Tried the key lime, toffee, and salted caramel - all excellent!
google avatar

Natty P.

Yelp
A hidden gem! This place has unique and very flavorful chocolates! Loved the fruit fillings and the presentation is gorgeous. A bit pricey, but very good. Will definitely be back for more!
google avatar

Yelp
I have never had your chocolates and for the holidays one of my best friends brought me one of your custom boxes, with a bottle of champagne. Your chocolates are so delicious and silky. I didn't wanted to share my chocolates!! Thank you, so much for your delicious chocolates they're so decadent and amazing. I will come your way soon!
google avatar

Najwa G.

Yelp
Yes the Chocolate Moderne is quite pricey but it is worth every pretty penny. The location changed since I last visited but the quality is still supreme. My favorite avant-garde bar is the lover in white chocolate bar, and I don't even like white chocolate! The passion fruit completes the bar albeit I am a sucker for passion fruit. I have tried a couple other things here and have never been disappointed so I will return to buy more gifts from here.

Yelp
I never ever leave Yelp reviews but the man who helped me today was so kind and patient. I was putting together a box for my girlfriend and he was super knowledgeable and helped me pick the best stuff. Was definitely one of the highlights of my work trip because of his vibe, I will be back! And the sample I got to eat for me was delish :)
google avatar

Luis F.

Yelp
Great and interesting chocolates. Not the easiest to find since the store is also a workshop on an upper floor of the building. Been here many times. Always a hit.
google avatar

Yelp
This place has been on my bookmarks for ages, and I finally visited right before Valentine's Day. It's a husband-wife operation, with the former (Jim) behind the retail counter, and the latter (Joan) making the chocolate magic happen. Jim was very patient with us, ensuring the selection process was a special one. They are also generous with samples! Overall, this is a great choice if you want an unconventional shopping experience. Definitely will be back for the baklava chocolate, which they had run out of when we stopped by.
google avatar

Yelp
Don't be fooled by the modest setup of this place - it's a hidden gem in the city! It's on the 9th floor of some building, the expectation and excitement build up as the elevator moves up! Lol They have extensive selection of chocolates with unique flavors and artistic designs!
google avatar

Steven B.

Yelp
Every Valentines Day. There's no other place that compares. This place is in a class by itself.
google avatar

Yelp
Amazing chocolates! Beautifully crafted and the owner was very nice and loved hearing their story of how they came about!

Yelp
Yuuummmm ! Pure deliciousness! I have to go to the store next trip to NYC I was gifted a tasty bar ! And it is fantastic !

Yelp
What an amazing little hidden gem this place is. Tucked away on the 9th floor of an office building, one would never know there's a place selling amazing chocolates!!! We were greeted by Jim who was so kind and wonderful enough to tell us all the different types of chocolates on offer. We opted for a couple of different bars of chocolates - they were approx. $9.50 each. Good quality tasty chocolates made on premises. Such a dangerous discovery for a chocolate lover like myself. Thankful this place is not next door to where I live or work as I would probably have to join a gym!

Jen B.

Yelp
I had the opportunity to visit today and here are my observations. The Good It's nice to see that it is a small business, which is becoming such a rarity in New York. It's also clear that they're making all the chocolate themselves so it's not mass produced. There's a lot of variety that you really don't see with other chocolate places. I'm a very basic chocolate eater, but I think more adventurous people would enjoy the selection. The Not So Good The chocolate is really expensive. I paid $31 for nine pieces. I ended up getting an extra piece because otherwise I would've had my chocolate all jammed into this small plastic bag. I've been to other chocolate shops in the city and if you're buying eight pieces of chocolate, they typically give you some sort of container or box. Since it was a gift, I asked for a box and what I got was an attitude and a really cheap plastic sleeve. Not exactly what I wanted to give my mother on her 75th birthday but I had no choice unless I was gonna head down the block to Michael's to get a proper box.

Yelp
They taste as good as they look. Chocolat Moderne offers both classic and innovative flavors in their dark and milk chocolate assortments. Well worth a trip to their shop for a special occasion, such as Valentines Day.

Yelp
This is a unique chocolate experience. You go into a building, sign in at the lobby with the doorman, and the. Take the elevator to the 9th floor. There you walk into a chocolate factory with great hosts! The owners are Joan and Jim, and they love chocolate! Jim will offer you samples and help you select bonbons. They have. Great selection, around 60 different bonbons. My favorite was the wild strawberry in wild strawberry balsamic syrup. So good! My second favorite was the passion fruit cardamom caramel in white chocolate. I think you can't go wrong here with any of their chocolates. They're beautiful and so good! By the way, You have plenty of options without alcohol.

Yelp
I found a really delicious chocolate store Modern. I went to buy a my friend's holiday gift. Store is in a building so it's a hideaway chocolate store. They let me sample a lot. My best favorite is milk chocolate bar with nuts!
google avatar

Yelp
I walk down west 20th street all the time and little did I know that for the last 15+years a hidden gem was among us. Jim, the owners husband was extremely nice to speak with and helped me create a box of a few bon bons for a gift. The chocolate itself was amazing, a great selection of flavors. I'm surprised this place hasn't been reviewed more! A real gem and reasonably priced for the quality. I will return! Thanks Jim for making my Tuesday afternoon a little sweeter!!
google avatar

Stephanie K.

Yelp
I visited this place on a whim because I needed to buy a gift for someone and it showed up on my google maps; boy am I glad it did!! Everything here is made with the highest quality and the most care. When I went in I was greeted by the owners husband. You can tell he genuinely cares about the business and the craft. After letting me sample a few chocolates, he helped me pick out which ones my friend would like. There was no rush and he explained in detail all of the amazing flavors. I settled on a box of 6 for the gift and the presentation is lovely as well. They have an array of flavors for every chocolate lover (except mint!!), and they are almost too beautiful to eat. I particularly loved the halva and champagne chic ones. Will definitely be back soon!

Yelp
Picked up a selection of assorted dark -- so hard to choose! -- and a bar for Valentine's Day. They were a hit, and my wife said the Lychee one was one of the greatest discoveries so far this year. The staff was delightful and very helpful in preparing the gift. Most definitely going back!

T T.

Yelp
Much like the other reviewers stated-- the chocolate is amazing and the owners couldn't be sweeter! They took lots of time to help us choose the perfect selection and were generous with samples. Was a bit pricey but not bad for a special occasion, delicious chocolate, and fabulous experience.
google avatar

Yelp
My husband and I stopped by again in memory of their chocolate at our wedding dinner. I met the wife and we were able to taste their exquisite chocolate one more time. She was kind and generous. We love this gem!
google avatar

Joon Ho J.

Yelp
Best in town. The owner was super helpful and nice. And of course, the chocolate was amazing and so rich! Probably the best kept secret in town
google avatar

Heather F.

Yelp
Chocolat Moderne is incredible! I needed to purchase homemade chocolates+boxes for a work event that was occurring the next day. Chocolat Moderne was the only company out of 5 others who were willing and able to complete this last-minute request. I walked in and immediately felt at home - they let me try many flavors, helping to sort out which chocolates would be best/ideal for a company event. They also provided beautiful boxes and the desired ribbon. If it weren't for Chocolat Moderne, we would have been in a difficult situation. Thank you CM for making it all happen!
google avatar

Christopher P.

Yelp
These are the most exquisite chocolates in NY! Tastes, textures and presentation are all sophisticated, balanced, beautiful!

Yelp
Mediocre- I expected more from this place given previous Yelp reviews and owner credential and achievements. Got a box of 24 for my girlfriend's birthday and it was a hit and miss experience. Some were great and some were just plain out bad. If you haven't tried yet I recommend Stick With Me. Their bonbons are way better. I might be back given that my girlfriend and I marked down the ones that were decent and have yet to try the others. BTW: Perhaps I'm just there at a bad time but the owner was not as nice as other people said on Yelp. I tried engaging in a conversation but she called over one of her employees to handle me and she went into the backroom and was never to be seen again.
google avatar

Autumn D.

Yelp
So my boyfriend got me this beautiful box of chocolate for valentines day. It looks too good to eat! All the chocolate is crafted there and the box is personalized- he picked each piece of chocolate out. It tastes amazing and my personal favorite being the banana cognac one! It's a flavor I never knew I needed!

Eric R.

Yelp
Hidden gem! My gf and I are so glad we stumbled on this place. It's some of the best chocolate we've ever had. The the one that stood out the most is the white chocolate passion fruit cardamom, I'm not even a white chocolate fan.
google avatar

Kaitlyn K.

Yelp
My sister and I stumbled across this hidden gem thanks to our lack of impulse control and their understated sign saying something like, "come on up to the 9th floor we have chocolate bon bons." We walked into a room filled with chocolatiering equipment and a small display case to the left. We were offered a wonderful variety of free samples by the owner's husband, Jim. He was absolutely delightful and very knowledgeable. He made suggestions based off of our preferences and told us a little bit about the company. We ended up walking out with handfuls of the Avant-Garde Bars and special peanut bon bons for our mom. You HAVE to try the 'Lemon Up' white chocolate Avant-Garde Bar - it melts in your mouth and tastes like the most savory lemon tart. It's incredible. We also LOVED the peanut butter salted bon bon. Again - melts in your mouth, flavorful, delicious. I'm in serious danger of some diabetes with this place... Loved it!! This place is definitely a little pricier, but you're supporting a small business AND buying gourmet chocolates. Worth it! I would love it if they maybe ran a chocolatiering class!!! (hint hint Joan and Jim!)

T S.

Yelp
On a random NYC visit up from WDC, googled "chocolate shops near me" and up pops CM. Ninth floor of a non-descript office building, are you kidding? Yet, This is By Far the best chocolate ever - hand-crafted on-site. Hand me anything from CM with caramel or raspberry and I'll marry you! Jim was a super salesman without the pushiness...just a refreshing human being. Definitely will be back, and ordering holiday goodies as well.

Marlo S.

Yelp
fun to visit, pop upstairs and get some great chocolate. a nice gourmet gift and and a sweet small business to support.

Yelp
Classy and delicious. I bought several as gifts. They were packaged beautifully. They are adorable and unique chocolates. The owners are a couple who are so kind and accommodating. I am so happy I found this place!

Gail F.

Yelp
Enjoyable and divine Sent a gift box after being gifted myself as I found the chocolate very much to my liking. I decided to have it packaged In small clear slide boxes Instead of one box Easier to keep& each box will have the Chocolat Moderne Selection with a circle around the contents. The happy recipients are also highly complimentary.

Yelp
This place of delicious magic is a hidden gem. It is very much worth the effort to find it. This place is AMAZING! I tried the lychee bonbon and I was blown away. The inside was deliciously fruity and not too sweet. The outside was a rich chocolate and soon it was all gone. That lychee bonbon changed me. The owners can arrange the chocolate assortments in such pretty ways! The different colored ribbons complement the beautiful chocolates. The chocolates are not only tasty but also a form of art. The owners are so kind and were especially friendly to my son. They offered my son and I multiple chocolates samples to help me decide what to buy. They have a wide variety of chocolates and there is a story behind every piece. I HIGHLY suggest this place!

Tim B.

Yelp
The real deal -- you see them making the chocolate in their kitchen. Excellent quality, beautiful design, reasonable price. Don't be put off that they are on the ninth floor of an office building.
google avatar

Ty H.

Yelp
Please don't go to this place. It is horrible. The service is terrible. The chocolates are terrible. LOL. Just kidding. I just don't want a lot of people coming to what will be my new favorite chocolate place in New York City. One word to describe this place. Wow. Jim is a true pleasure to deal with. He did not even charge me for all the chocolates that I bought. And he clearly loves chocolate and was patient in describing different chocolates to me and letting me taste a lot. Joanne who is the chocolate here and his wife seems super nice as well. Robbie who works there looks like a really good guy. But the bottom line is that the chocolates rock. However, please do not come here and cause lines when I go there...
google avatar

Ann K.

Yelp
Great chocolate. I especially enjoyed the banana flavored one. Ordered in the mail. Came fresh and very enjoyable
google avatar

Lisa T.

Yelp
So I went in because of sign and my sincere love of all things made of love(chocolate). It smelled amazing and tasted amazing, smooth an silky. I travel and have people bring me chocolate from all over, and I can tell you this is a great choice of flavor and richness. I need to go back and try the drinking chocolate. Ms. Joan you go with your bad self.

Yelp
Truly a top-class experience. Only five stars somehow feels like we are not doing Chocolat Moderne justice. After being alerted of Chocolat Moderne via a Japanese website, we visited this establishment over the holiday weekend seeking both unique sweets for friends and family and to sate our curiosity of how Chocolat Moderne compares to Japanese brands which we frequently purchase. Jim was amazingly patient and thorough with us, allowing us to sample almost every chocolate piece that he had on hand while taking time to assist us in customizing our purchases. The chocolate pieces on offer are of an excellent variety, taste, and texture, yet are also finely balanced and pleasing to the eye. Those with a taste for caramel, more exotic fruit flavors, and ganache will be particularly ecstatic with the selection available. We spent over an hour in their showroom and could not have been more pleased with the product and the service that Jim provided. Jim was also kind enough to hold on to our purchase for later pick-up so we wouldn't have to carry them around in the hot NYC afternoon. The showroom may be hard to locate due to there not being a storefront and it being on the 9th floor, so please be on the lookout for a chalkboard sign which will indicate the entrance to the correct building. Trust me, if you're a fan of chocolates, you do not want to miss this. Recommended pieces: Banane Flambee, Bazar (Almond Marzipan), Parlez Pistachio, Peanut Pizzazz, Maple Magic.

Yelp
I went to this shop on Labor Day while visiting the city. I wanted to purchase a large kimono box and 2 avart garde bars. Yet, my order was botched and I didn't get the chocolate bars. I reached out and the problem was resolved amicably.

Elaina R.

Yelp
The best chocolate sea salt caramel I've ever had. The owner is also incredibly sweet and helpful. A must visit place.

Yelp
Absolutely great selection and delicious chocolate. Wife loved it, and she is hard to impress! We will back next time we are in town!

Yelp
I happened to be in the neighborhood for brunch and Google led me to Chocolat Moderne. What an amazing discovery. When you walk in, the first thing you see is all the chocolate-making equipment and I happened upon Joan, the owner and chocolatier herself, working on a batch. Then her husband Jim came out to greet me and led me through the process of choosing a custom 24 chocolate box as a gift for my friend's wedding. I sampled a few of the chocolates at Jim's urging while there and was blown away at the interesting and exquisite flavor combinations (my favorite was the persimmon white peach caramel that was a part of the Japanese collection). I'm looking forward to going back and trying many more (I've got my eye on the adzuki bean and shiso lime). I've eaten a lot of chocolate in my day and Chocolat Moderne's truffles are some of the best that I've had. Plus the service really can't be beat--Jim and Joan were both warm, informative, and happy to answer any and all of the questions I had. Highly recommended, especially if you're looking for a beautiful gift or just want to eat some delicious chocolates yourself.
