The Best Seafood Restaurants in Phoenix, Arizona | Eater Phoenix

"Chula’s fishing boat pulls in the best the waters off San Diego have to offer, then ships them straight out to Phoenix. Daily menu selections reflect what has arrived from Southern California, but there are some everyday options worth stopping in for. Try the green chile tuna melt, which blends the spice of Hatch green chiles, Oaxaca cheese, and confited albacore tuna, setting an impossible bar for any tuna melt that comes after it. Make sure to check out what’s available to buy to take home at the fresh fish counter before leaving." - Asonta Benetti

Chula Seafood - Review - South Scottsdale - Scottsdale - The Infatuation

"Chula Seafood is a fast-casual spot that’s great for when you want more surf than turf. They have a dedicated following for their reinvented tuna melt with hatch chile, oaxaca cheese, and chimichurri. If it’s a scorcher outside, order one of the poke bowls for a raw fish cool down, but if you’re after some heat, go with the spicy yellowfin tuna loaded with shishito peppers. We love to swing by the Greyhawk location for a quick meal or to score Happy Hour deals on oysters, spiked limeades, and soft-shell crab sandwiches." - Lauren Topor

I went here for lunch with some coworkers and I ordered the large clam chowder and a salmon nigiri. The clam chowder was ok with good amount of clams. It was a bit watery unlike Boston style. The Salmon Nigiri had large chunks of fresh salmon inside with crispy seaweed wrapping. They served with a wasabi dipping sauce. It was quite nice and delicious! The place smells fishy when you enter which makes me question the freshness of the seafood initially. However, upon eating, it's clear that it is fresh. Perhaps they need to air out the place a bit. My coworkers generally enjoyed their meals as well.

I have really been looking forward to this review. I have been coming to this spot for years, and it is my all-time favorite sashimi spot in the Phoenix area. I have only gone to the original South Scottsdale location as I lived just down the road for over a decade. They now have several locations, including in San Diego. My go-to dish is the house sashimi platter. They offer it in 2 different sizes. I usually go with the larger one but the small one will fill up most people or me when I’m not super hungry. No need to order sides with this as it comes with rice, veggies, a small salad. The original location is in a very nondescript, unassuming strip mall. Most people probably drive by and never know this place is tucked in there. So it is a treasure trove for locals. There are many more touristy spots in Scottsdale. But not sure you will find better sashimi. They serve it on bamboo leaves in a silver tray packed with ice. So fresh and delicious. The salmon, tuna - all are equally tasty. They also have a small counter with fresh fish and sushi kits available for purchase. They also sell stuff like gumbo and larger meals if you are ever hosting. I also dig their small retail offerings - particular the “Shuck Boy” t-shirt. This is one of the 1st stops for me when I am in town. A treat every time. I hope this place will always be there.

Google
Some of the best seafood in Scottsdale! This bowl was delicious! Vibrant, energetic, fresh and lively food that hits the spot. These flavors were so spot on and I highly recommend this Hawaiian Style Poke bowl. The service here was wonderful and very friendly. This is a great spot to get a delicious home style meal. They also gave us a seed oil free option that was very much appreciated!

Google
We were visiting from Seattle and weren’t sure if we’d be able to find a great seafood spot — boy, were we wrong! Chula Seafood exceeded our expectations and introduced us to an American-Hawaiian fusion we didn’t know we needed in our lives. The customer service and conversation with the staff were amazing as well. This place is truly top tier!

Google
I could eat here every day. Food is phenomenal. Seafood is fresh and flown in daily from San Diego. The green chile tuna melt was so unique and flavorful (not spicy). The chimichurri compliments it so well. And the tuna in the Hawaiian poke bowl was delicious. Service is incredible as well.

Google
This place came at the recommendation of one of my dear friends in Scottsdale. He said this was one of his most favorite spots and has some of the best seafood. I was very excited to check it out! Was a bit surprised when pulling into a strip mall… a very unassuming spot… I was pleasantly surprised by our experience. We were warmly greeted and elected to sit outside and enjoy our oysters and our spicy tuna bowls. There isn't table service. You order at front, and they bring it out to you. The tuna was delicious / fresh and was perfectly accompanied by great veggies. You’ll be pleasantly surprised on your visit to Chula!

Google
Pretty good little over priced the featured items seem tasty for the crab cake Sammy it was 30$ something bucks which is steep for a small sandwich and boulder chips got oysters 🦪 before and the sauce that comes with it is good

Google
Chula has some of the best quality fish I've ever had, especially in Arizona. My brother who used to spear fish and catch fish in Japan, Hawaii, etc even agrees. Recently, I got a sashimi platter for my birthday. I won't lie, it costs more than getting an omakase platter at some of my favorite sushi places, but I am still very happy with it! The staff at chula took extra care to follow my requests and made the platter look very nice. Because of chula, I had an amazing birthday! I felt like they took great care for my order. Thank you so much, Chula!

Yelp
Went here for the first time recently. Great fresh poke. Was really impressed with the service. if you're hungry I'd definitely get the large! great ambience inside the restaurant! I will definitely be back soon! i had the Hawaiian Poke. it was fantastic.

Yelp
I stopped by today at the Scottsdale location. I heard that this place had poke so I thought I'd try it. I've been to a couple poke places before but this place is a little different. They're more of a fish market restaurant, should've known by the name. I ordered the Hawaiian poke bowl in a large size. It comes with carrot, cucumber, edamame, pineapple, seasoned wakame, macadamia nuts, sesame seeds, rice and 2 proteins (I chose salmon and spicy scallops). Ran me about $25 ish. A little bit more than I was used to paying for poke but still got it. Also the toppings are pre determined, as far as I'm aware, so I wasn't able to customize that or any sauce. I did stop by on a busier time of the day, so it did take a min or two to put my order in. Upon presentation my food looked great. But when I did start to eat it I couldn't help but notice a strong salty taste, possibly from soy sauce, maybe from the sesame seeds or wakame? Not sure. Afterwards I did top it off with some sriracha but it still had an underlying taste of salt. Overall in my opinion the food was meh, maybe a little hyped for the poke, given the price. But to be fair they have much more to offer on the menu. The service was ok, but i did visit on a busier time of day. Overall my experience was fine..

Yelp
Came here on a Sunday since so many good places are closed on Sundays. Coming from California I was a bit skeptical of getting seafood front the desert. Other than the prices being a bit high (each shrimp is $4 in the shrimp cocktail) I did enjoy the food. The shrimp was great and I got the Hawaiian poke with spicy scallop and salmon. The salmon is quite bland but the scallop was rich in sauce and was great. The downside of the poke is that there wasn't enough other stuff imo and I felt like I was eating fish and rice. Overall no complaints on seafood quality though.

Yelp
I was really wanting a warm lobster roll, and I'd never had one before, so this was the perfect spot to try it. Was I thrilled about the $32 price tag? Nope. But was it worth every penny? Totally! I could've eaten way more, but the amount of lobster they gave me, perfectly seasoned, was amazing. It comes with chips, and the limeade was great. It's such a cute, clean little place with super friendly service; I wish I lived closer so I could go back more often.

Yelp
Its a small shop and we got in 30 minutes before closing. Quiet atmosphere with pictures of fishermen and marlins on the walls... we went for broke and ordered the lobster rolls. Pricey at $32.00 each, but oh, what a beautiful treat!! So much lobster on a toasted nobel bread roll. Out of this world!
google avatar

Yelp
First time here for restaurant week and we were not disappointed. Their tuna appetizer was very good as well as the raw there which were Canadian. As soon as you walk in, you order at the counter and they bring out the food and drinks to you. It was fairly quiet when we went and on Sunday they had happy all day which was a plus.
google avatar

Myke M.

Yelp
Ordered a sushi platter last week. The picture below is the advertisement for Chula in Scottsdale on Hayden. The platter I received didn't look the same. The slices were piled on top of each other, and a few did not look fresh. The sides were okay: hot rice, miso, pickled seaweed, kim chee. They need to have a standard and stick to it. I love this place but will stick to the dishes I know taste great.
google avatar

Yelp
This has become our go-to for seafood. While we usually shop the "market" section (my husband will stop on the way home from work to grab a salmon filet, Ahi tuna or scallops), this spot is also a restaurant. Every time we've been, there are many diners both inside and on the raised patio. Always fresh and delicious, we have yet to be disappointed.
google avatar

Paulina L.

Yelp
I don't know what has happened to Chula's. It used to be so good. The quality has gone down, but the prices have gone up. I got the poke today and it was so bland. It used to taste good. And also clam chowder, but it's like they water it down now. I got extra rice, and they didn't even fill the tiny cup it came in and it was $3 for rice... Everything was over $40. Very disappointed and sadly not worth it.

Yelp
Great food and service! Its wonderful we have places like these local establishments in Phoenix.

Yelp
Visited Chula Seafood for the first time as a part of restaurant week and suffice it to say, we will be back!! Fantastic, attentive service and the food was amazing - flavorful and fresh. Best variety and quality of seafood I've had in the Phoenix area.
google avatar

Angie G.

Yelp
I've been to Chula Seafood a couple of times and everything has been delicious. This past visit I got a dozen of raw oysters and the clam chowder and WOW the oysters were some of the freshest I've had in Arizona and the clam chowder was hearty, creamy, and so flavorful. This will be my go to order from now on. They have a variety of canned beer and wine. Happy hour is all day Sundays, and Monday through Saturday from 3pm to 5pm. The south Scottsdale location is an unassuming spot with plenty of parking as it's located in a strip mall. They also sell seafood to go by the pound. Highly recommend this spot!

StyleBoost B.

Yelp
Cashier was friendly, restaurant was clean, food was awesome! What more can you ask for? We will be back, especially for all day happy hour on Sundays!
google avatar

Yelp
I love sea food. Everything was so amazing and delicious. I had the green chile tuna melt I ate everything!!! The clam chowder was the best I've had in a while. The shrimp cocktail was ready to go. And the shrimpys were so big and juicy. 10/10.

Yelp
Love this place for dine in and take out fresh seafood. Picked up oysters and scallops last week and was impressed with the quality. Feels like at home back at the ocean! Staff is helpful and kind
google avatar

Yelp
Chula has the best, and freshest seafood I have been able to find in the valley! The salmon poke was in a sauce that was amazing and flavorful. The grilled cheese with fresh lobster melted in your mouth, I think I could've eaten 5 of them. The staff were very friendly at their pop up event and I can't wait to grab more fresh seafood from Chula!

Yelp
The new Elote Lobster Roll. Devine. Tossed in chipotle mayo, with roasted corn, cilantro, scallion, and drizzled with a lime crema. 10/10. The price point of $32 is not outrageous, but I would have expected a side of something other than basic chips. Their online ordering system was super easy to use, and even text me with a time to expect it to be ready. Came in on a Sunday around 1pm. They had a decent crowd. All indoor seating. You order in a line first and can take it to go or sit down after. will be back to try out other items.

Yelp
Even though we are in the desert, you can still find fresh fish is AZ. Chula Seafood is one of those places. I've stopped in before at this family-owned business and have always enjoyed my meal here. Chula Seafood has a few locations across the Valley. Fresh fish at Chula is shipped directly here from their harpoon fishing boat in Southern California. In addition to serving seafood, Chula is a small market and has merchandise available for purchase like hats and shirts. Chula Seafood was advertising lobster rolls one weekend and I had an immediate craving for one. The customer service I experienced the day I came was very informative and friendly. I'm a big lobster roll fan and they make a really good one here. Really fresh roll with just the right amount of spice. Chula has lots of seafood options on their menu like poke bowls, oysters, soups, and sandwiches. The Confit Tuna Sandwich is one of my favorites. Follow Chula on social media to learn about their Monday dinners nights and other special events.

Yelp
Pretty good. Recommended for lunch as dinner is more quick seating and informal. This is located in a strip mall so you may miss it as the signage is super small. Overall it offers very fresh poke bowls and fish salads as well as clam chowder's and other classic fish ditches. You can also buy fish from their counter. Here You order at the counter and then they pass your food ti the table once it's done. The prices are reasonable and the service is excellent. There's also options for alcohol, including wine and beer if you'd like to amp it up a bit.

Yelp
Chulas is my favorite spot to go to for lunch! I wish they were open for dinner because I would definitely be coming more often. The skippy j lunch box is just so good, I get it for lunch once a week. I wish they carried some of the meals other locations offer but they are still so amazing.
google avatar

Elaine R.

Yelp
This was my first time trying Chula's Seafood and I was not disappointed. I had the Saturday Special, Surf and Turf Burrito, I had French fries added instead of having rice, and they were very accommodating...Man o man was this burrito good! Very nice size, almost big enough to split between two people. I will definitely go back to try something else on the menu.
google avatar

Shaya J.

Yelp
Delicious, not much more to say. Fresh seafood, friendly staff at all locations, incredible oysters. Trust Chula with your seafood
google avatar

Kelly V.

Yelp
Came here for lunch today and got an absolutely delicious lobster roll. The lobster was plentiful and cooked properly with enough clarified butter to go with it. My partner had a tuna special that he enjoyed very much. We picked up halibut and grouper to make for dinner last night and it was delicious. I'm going to have to come back for one of their famous poke bowls.
google avatar

Yelp
A friend told me about Chula Seafood years ago and I finally made it in. I admit, it wasn't what imagined. It's kind of homey. You order at a small seafood counter--with very tempting offering. I was eyeing the salmon burgers. I got a Hawaiian Poke Bowl with Ahi to go. Unsurprisingly, the tuna was the star of the show. It was super fresh. The sauce was light but tasty. It didn't overpower the fish. I enjoyed the brightness of the pineapple. I did feel like the ratios of fish to rice to veggies was off. I would have liked more rice, cucumbers, and carrots. I also felt like the cucumbers needed some seasoning. Didn't love the macadamia nuts. I don't feel like I eat a lot, but I was low key still hungry after the regular size ($17) . I did try to order online but the system wasn't working--kept saying they were closed and I could pick up tomorrow. Then tried to call in an order but no one picked up. So I was a bit annoyed and completely unsure if they were open by the time I arrived. At least my order came out quickly after I was able to get it placed.
google avatar

Christina M.

Yelp
Still amazing! The clam chowder is some of the best I've had. Every time we come here it's the best experience and food tastes great. The seafood is super fresh. Today we had the Friday special Tuna Patty Melt, bowl of chowder, and Kyle's candy which is essentially a salmon jerky. All really great. We got 2 beers on happy hour, $2 off each. The staff are always so friendly. It's super cute in the restaurant and they play the best reggae. It's a very chill vibe. Saving up points for a cool chula hat.
google avatar

Gretel Y.

Yelp
Chula Seafood, I'm hooked! A friend raved about Chula's fresh seafood and so we decided to order it for lunch. There are so many delicious options to choose from, but being a noodle gal, I went with a large Thai peanut noodle bowl, $22. It comes with albacore poke, carrots, cucumbers, sweet peppers, celery, kimchi, peanuts, sesame seeds, and of course, (rice) noodles. The Thai peanut noodle bowl was absolutely delicious! It was creamy and had so much flavor and spice. It reminded me a bit like pad thai, and I love pad thai, but with poke and served cold. The large was plenty for me. I was excited to have leftovers to enjoy a few hours later! I wish I lived closeby. I can't wait to try more items!
google avatar

Shanita F.

Yelp
I ordered the Thai peanut noodle bowl that comes with tuna on top. The dish was very good and came out very quickly. The tuna was also really good and everything had such great flavor.
google avatar

Anna M.

Yelp
Came in to get fresh ahi to make poke... It was the best ahi I've ever had! Don't let the prices scare you, you get what you pay for.
google avatar

Chris S.

Yelp
Last visit to PHX my friend was anxious to take me here and it was closed. I was so glad to FINALLY get to try it 4 years later! Great menu with a wide range of fishy deliciousness. The ingredients are fresh and high quality and the poke bowl I had was a good size serving and very tasty. Highly recommended!
google avatar

Michele G.

Yelp
Fresh seafood from San Diego. They have daily and weekly specials but the tuna melt is by far my favorite. They also have a market so you can take fish home to cook.
google avatar

Renata L.

Yelp
Chula's seafood really delivers fresh of the boat seafood to The Valley! This is our first time here even though we leave close. We ordered the Sashimi platter, Korean bowl with ahi, and clam chowder. The chowder and platter were A+, with emphasis on the platter with salmon, hiramachi, and tuna confit. The mushrooms, greens, and avocado were refreshing complements to the fresh fish. I thought the Korean Bowl was just ok in comparison to the sashimi platter, as both were the same price. The bowl was missing the gochujang, which we had to request later on, abs the greens had some wilted leaves, unfortunately. The ambiance is lacking for the price point, maybe? All in all, A+ for the fresh seafood. We will be back

Rhett H.

Yelp
I called earlier in the day and the person I spoke to told me they are open daily until 6. I drove 45 minutes to discover that they closed at 4pm for Halloween. Now I have to drive back another 45 minutes through traffic with no fish. Very annoyed.
google avatar

Jacob W.

Yelp
Kind of overpriced for what you get. Paid $70 for 1 poke bowl and some oysters. They were outta rice also.... They're vinegar side they serve with the oysters leaves much to be desired. Meh....overall
google avatar

Jessica G.

Yelp
This place is easy to miss if you're not specifically looking for it. A small hole in the wall but a Diamond in the rough! Fresh great quality sustainability sourced seafood. Menu may change depending what they have caught, delivered and is left. They fresh seafood for you to view and pick for them to cook. Very relaxed atmosphere. They also offer beer and wine. They have these oatmeal macadamia cookies they bake in house as well that are good. This is going to be our usual spot for seafood. Definitely worth taking the time to eat here.
google avatar

Mark P.

Yelp
This place has a lot of love built into it. You can tell that the people that run it really care about quality and customers. Small place with high high quality. Prices are a little steep but I understand why. I really hope this place makes it.
google avatar

Ann A.

Yelp
I ordered salmon and a shrimp cocktail for five people for Christmas day Picked it up on December 24. Everything was so delicious and everyone was raving. Outstanding job Chula thank you and that cocktail sauce was yummy. And thank you for making it so easy to order and be able to pick up the day before the holiday.
google avatar

Mike T.

Yelp
I've been going to this place for several years as it's right across the street from my work. Haven't been here in a while due to working from home this last year or so. Glad to see it is still going strong and the food is still delicious! I decided to try the Whitefish BLT for the first time and really enjoyed it! Very tasty and filling. It might be my new goto here.
google avatar

Kira D.

Yelp
Not adding Chula Seafood to my favorite restaurant list! Not only are they pricey ($17 for a regular bowl & $22 for an XL bowl), but there was nothing Korean about their Korean Poke bowl! I've never eaten a cotton ball before, but I'm going to go out on a limb & say that this bowl tasted as bland as a cotton ball! The quality of their poke is impressive, but they need to up their game on getting their flavors right. I wish there were more toppings as well. This poke bowl felt naked to me compared to other bowls that I've had elsewhere. Now that I've frequented a few poke places, I recommend going to places where u can choose ur toppings & where they pile on the toppings for u! Hint, hint, Gosan Poke & Roll!
google avatar

K D.

Yelp
Came by for Mother's Day Great service as usual Really enjoy the interior! Had the Lobster Roll Delicious- so well done and seasoned Also got the bowl of Clam Chowder -the best I have ever had in AZ We will be back!
google avatar

Nancy S.

Yelp
The food is AMAZING! I've been here probably 5-6 times and it's consistently delicious. My only gripe is the service...which is a direct reflection of what you pre-tip! So, if you add a big tip when you order, you'll be fine. If you prefer to leave a cash tip at the end of your meal, the service is crap.
google avatar

James H.

Yelp
Best seafood in Arizona. So many have come and gone. This one must stay! Incredible food, very friendly counter service, reasonably priced.
google avatar

Kwan A.

Yelp
Even though this is a small eatery with fast food like setting, everything tasted great and quality. Clam Chowder - thick, creamy and flavorful. Korean Poke Bowl with Spicy Scallops and Tuna - both the spicy scallops and tuna were very fresh. The bowl was very tasty with the gojuchang and all the fixings. I think it would be even better if they could be a bit light handed with the sauce since the ingredients were so good that they didn't need to be drenched in sauce to cover their natural goodness. Shrimp Burger - super tasty with huge succulent juicy shrimps. Must try! Although this place has a limited menu, everything was fresh. A good option for seafood lovers.
google avatar

Stefan H.

Yelp
Got the shrimp sandwich for Wednesday special and it was unbelievable. So good and menu seems awesome all around.
google avatar

Ronda R.

Yelp
I have never had anything on the menu that didn't impress me. One of the first places to ever get me to enjoy the taste of fish in my life. John the owner is a doll. Don't miss their daily specials!
google avatar

Mike W.

Yelp
It's been a while since I've stopped in the OG location. If you've never tried the Green Tuna Chili Melt, then you ain't living. One of my favorite all time sandwiches. The chimichurri sauce is off the chart. Still trying to figure out that recipe. Service was great. #DukeOfEats

Eunice L.

Yelp
Very salty. Price point is high as the restaurant is self service casual cafe style. Small portion is already $21, how to compete with the poke restaurant with 3 proteins only $16.90.
google avatar

Nicole S.

Yelp
Chula is one of my favorite places for fresh seafood. I love their poke bowls, clam chowder, and fresh offerings in the case. The service here is always top notch, and the locals hope it stays a secret! The vibe is chill and casual and everyone's friendly and helpful. Best, freshest poke around.

Yelp
The fish was fresh and the bowls were so tasty! I got the Palmer with green tea and the limeade. Would totally recommend if you need something refreshing. My tuna was so spicy, I had to get a beer to help wash it down. Not so spicy I couldn't finish, because I did. We liked the Baja Blonde Girl...Easy day drinking beer!! The lady taking our order was very nice and offered to make me the Arnold Palmer with their twist. Green tea and limeade, yea please!! The dining room had fun things to look at, and purchase, if so inclined.
