NYC’s New Restaurant Openings

"The founder of Chipotle is selling sandwiches now. At Counter Service in Greenwich Village, you can pick up a mushroom patty melt, green goddess chicken club, or bánh mí with pork belly. Most of the sandwiches cost around $17, with some breakfast options—like a BEC with a hash brown on a brioche bun—clocking in under $10." - will hartman, bryan kim

The Best Sandwiches in NYC, According to Eater Editors

"Steve Ells of Chipotle switched up a vegan concept for Counter Service, a dine-in and to-go sandwich location that is quite good. Consider the $16 Cortese, thin-sliced roasted pork loin, provolone, and salsa verde, a pate-stuffed banh mi, or the Baron with roast beef, aged cheddar, and horseradish cream. This will become a chain, but consider it now while it still feels like an independent business." - Emma Orlow, Robert Sietsema

Wow- just got a sandwich delivered and it was incredible. I tried the green goddess chicken club with a side of hot sauce. Their hot sauce is like a Calabrian chili pepper sauce and I loved it. Not a huge sandwich for the price but definitely the perfect size for one person. The bread was so fresh! Also, the brown butter chocolate chip cookie is SO GOOD

I was excited to try this new spot right by me on Park Ave for lunch today. Walking in, I loved the store’s cleanliness, nice employees, colors, and the small menu list. I ordered the Smokeshow and when I saw the sandwich being made and wrapped, I could already tell I was going to be disappointed. For $18 at a carry out sandwich spot, I would expect a sizable sandwich. While I would give it an 8/10 on taste (I enjoyed it) and it tasted like solid quality ingredients, I really was shocked at the size of the sandwich. Carrying the takeout bag even felt light. There are other high-quality trendy sandwich spots in the city that charge a similar price, but give you much more food that makes it feel worth it. I’m not sure if this was a fluke on my visit but I would not spend another $20 there for lunch when there are other good spots that give you a heftier sandwich. This location on Park just opened this week so hopefully this is more of a training /momentary issue rather than their expected portions.

Lucky me that this shop just happens to be at my bus stop! I was greeted by two friendly fellows. I greeted and asked for their Banh Mi. I was then redirected to their online ordering platform but they did confirm that was what I wanted and started working on it prior to me completing the order, a nice human touch. I added on their Brown butter chocolate chip cookie. It didn’t take long to get my sandwich and cookie and I went on my way. This Banh mi was amazing. At first I thought it was a little small but I tell you it’s enough for sure. It’s filled to the brim with amazing veggies, pork and páté. So flavorful and juicy. The bread was nice and crispy and toasted. The chocolate chip cookie was delicious and salted. I heated up in the microwave to make it extra ooey gooey ;). Definitely need to revisit this shop again. Update: I have gone back twice and had the Bacon, egg and cheese and The Baron. I gotta stop eating here first because everything else I would even attempt to eat that day will just let me down. The BEC was a surprise. Super flavorful, crispy bacon and the hash brown is amazing. The baron was amazing as well. Three for three, I will be going back to try the rest.

Counter Service: BÁNH MÌ (OUR TAKE) – Chef’s Fave Came for the char, stayed for the bread, left wondering what the chef was favoring. The baguette? A triumph. Crispy, airy, structurally sound. Worthy of its own fan club. Pickled veggies pulled their weight, and the mint added a chic little hat tip to freshness. Service was friendly, efficient, and refreshingly nonchalant. So far, so good. But then we enter the murky waters of “Chef’s Fave.”Charred pork? More “spa-steamed” than flame-kissed. Chicken liver pâté? Either MIA or doing a masterclass in subtlety. Chilies? Filed a PTO request. Not present. The result? A sandwich built like it was afraid of flavor. Respectable size, but at its price point I expected at least one detectable ingredient from the headliner list. Still, the bread deserves an encore, and the staff gets props. Verdict: Would consider a second date with a different sandwich. But if the Chef's Fave was meant to woo me, I’m playing hard to get.

Google
3.5/5 TL;DR it is good but not $20 good (incl. tax). Meant to try their banh mi a while and finally tried it out today. Picked up my order at 3pm, no line. Yay! The lemongrass fish sauce dressing was refreshing especially when it is 90F outside. The bread had a good texture - crispy outside and still soft, not soggy or too starchy even 30 mins after the pickup and wrap in the paper bag. It was a good size for lunch, though definitely smaller than most of the Viet places in NYC. Doesn't bother me; a guy friend who came with me said it was more of a snack size for him. The not so good: not enough pickled carrots/daikons, barely any pàté. Net net , it was a bit dry bite after bite, missing the crunchy-savoriness that is signature with banh mi. I prob would try other sandwiches here in the future but won't go out of my way for it. For the time being, my vote for 'The Best Banh Mi in NYC' still goes to Pasteur Grill in Chinatown (tho you should really get the bun bo hue above all :P ) Note: there's no seating, takeout only. As the name, counter service, only

Google
It was very tempting to gate keep this place but it truly does deserve all the praise. From rapid preparation time to the final bite of my chocolate chip cookie, it was a top tier experience. My friends and I got three sandwiches The Cortese, Banh Mi, and The Smoke Show which I would rank in that order. Each sandwich had thinly sliced ingredients resulting in a well balanced and well sauced sandwich. I thought the bread was going to make this a mess to eat, but the baguettes had the perfect balance of structure to hold together the diverse ingredients and soft enough that the ingredients didn’t fall out between bites. It truly is a fine balance i think they got right. The cherry on top is definitely the Chocolate Chip Cookie. High praise all around and I can’t wait to work my way through the menu.

Google
OMG these sandwiches are to die for! I find myself continuing to go back to try the entire menu, all of which exceed my expectations and are very, very delicious. I love how small the menu is, how friendly they are, and how everything is available all day long. I also love how the ham carefully encased the egg so you wouldn’t end up with egg all over your clothes. What an extremely thoughtful detail. Don’t skip dessert, including the addicting broken pretzels… not to mention the best cheesecake and chocolate chip cookie in NYC! Best, trendiest, hottest new restaurant! I hope they expand everywhere!

SO yummy and easy; best sandwiches ~ the place is super clean; all sandwiches are well priced and very delicious ~ love them so much that I never remember to take photos before I eat them fast. lol

Yelp
It's fine. Heroes are humorously small. Ingredients taste good, especially the bread and cheese. It's just tiny. My hands feel so big when I grab it. I feel like a giant. Also tried the chocolate chip cookie which looks excellent but tastes like a frozen chocolate chip cookie. It's good but not really special. Also tried the potato crisp. It's cheap and also cheap. And small. Again, laughably small. Like a toy. You really need small hands to feel like you got a deal here. These would make great finger food heroes at a party or something like crudite.

Yelp
I don't know how this place hasn't blown up yet but I just had the best sando in a long long time. The banh mi (chefs fave) was probably the most well-balanced & flavorful bites with scrumptious pork belly. The carrot & daikon mix was perfectly sour (not sweet!), cutting through the fattiness and the freshest veggies for crunch. Bread was glorious and toasted to the brim. I also got their salted choco chip cookie which & sweet & spicy pretzels for a snack--both 10/10. Can't wait to come back to try my way through their menu!!!

Yelp
Started by Chipotle founder Steve Ells, Counter Service is a solid option for lunch/pastries in the area. I've tried: + Sweet and spicy Broken pretzels + Burnt basque cheesecake + Green goddess sandwich + Cinnamon roll center + Brown butter chocolate chip cookie The cookie is amazing - definitely get that. Only miss was the cinnamon roll, it was kind of dry. The sandwich was solid but my coworker ate half and said she got a stanky piece of chicken in her half. eek.

Yelp
I had the Yueben which was really good for it being vegan pastrami made with Yuba. Overall a really fantastic sandwich but I will say it does run on the pricier side.

Yelp
Ordered a banh mi for lunch and had what looked like a black beard hair in the $17 sandwich :( And the pork taste was a little off putting for some reason. The broken French toast was good though.

Yelp
I was visiting NYC and I was craving a sandwich. Did my research and saw Counter Service come up. I thought it was cool to see that the inventor of Chipotle was the person behind the concept. I didn't have time to make it to the space so I ordered it on DoorDash. I ordered the Baron: roast beef, white cheddar, water cress and horse radish mayo. Transparently I got distracted and didn't touch the sandwich an hour later. I can tell you this sandwich was still delicious, and I can't imagine how much better it would be made right way in store. I think that's a true test. A hour later the sandwich still had quality flavor. The roast beef was tender, the watercress was a nice green element. Also the bread they use is on another level. It was this crunchy and soft at the same time, and you really tasted the toasted sesame seeds on it. I did wish I tasted more of the horseradish mayo. When I see horseradish I want to get a kick. I do think the price point is on the expensive side, but I can imagine they are using higher quality ingredients. This sandwich feels like a nice treat yo self day lunch! I also appreciated the thought that went in to the vegan sandwich options. Their menu is simple and it reads flavorful

Yelp
Great quality sandwich place! Meant to only be a grab and go experience. They run a tight ship, and I've enjoyed the cheesesteak sandwich, the Yeuben, and egg and veg! My favorite is the egg and veg! 10 out of 10!

Yelp
GREEDFLATION ALERT. The sandwiches are tiny (however delicious) but prices were just raised 10%. Thought you guys were cool. Now I realize it was all just long con.

Yelp
I am very happy and impressed when people know when things do not work and change to make things GREAT. That's what happened to kernel (terrible name by the way....) I just tried the roast beef sandwich , since daily provisions took this (fantastic) item off their menu no one came with alternative. Until now ! All the ingredients are excellent and obviously the most two important - bread and roast beef . Nothing but mouthwatering!!! I also tried their chicken sandwich and their veggie one with the mushrooms for the cow/chicken haters . Both fantastic !!!! And don't pass on the hot sauce , it's a Bugatti of the hot sauces , a Must . Highly recommended!!!! Definitely a destination !!!!

Yelp
I visited 2 days into what I later learned was a soft opening. I was uncertain if I had the correct address when I arrived because from outside I thought it was locked. The guy inside informed me that they were still putting the final finishings on the place. They were also testing out hours of operation, menu items etc. On the day I went the closing time was 3pm. My mates and I ordered ahead for a 245pm pickup and our orders were ready when I got there. Picked up 4 sandwiches. Had a quick chat with the guy inside. He was very friend and answered all my prying question. Back to the office to try put the food , we traded pieces so we could try a bit of everything. The Banh Mi pickled veggies were a bit too tart , that was the only gripe I had with that one. The Roast Pork and Broccoli Rabe was my favorite, I'm a fan of bitter rabe, this one how was only slightly bitter. Chicken club, while good ,I wouldn't rush to order but that's a personal preference. Roast beef was good as well. While these sandwiches were good I feel that the price point was a tad high for the size of the sandwiches and they lacked that oomph I want when I drop $17 on a sandwich. I'd say $12 is a more fair price. The ingredients were good ,fresh and everything but I don't think the quality is justified for the price. At my favorite spot for sandwiches I pay $19 and honestly leave there like my entire body is smiling with satisfaction. I didn't get that feeling here. I also think a shop like this with this price point would be better suited in a different area. Im giving them grace because they are new and they are doing what new restaurants do ,figuring things out and adjusting. Overall good sandwiches , clean space and friendly staff.

Yelp
Quick, easy and omg delicious. No need to gate keep as they are so quick you don't have to worry about long waits. My only regret I didn't try the cookie. Green goddess sandwich was PERFECT.

Yelp
Ordered takeout at 9am. The business has a sign that says it doesn't open til 10:30am, yet their hours on yelp are 8am-5pm. Womp womp.

Yelp
Had this place bookmarked for awhile and added now to my Door Dash rotation lol. They offer a mix of different sandwiches for breakfast and lunch and some snacks and treats. I was debating on ordering either the Smokeshow, Green Goddess Chicken club, or the Cortese (roast pork and broccoli rabe). I went with the Smokeshow, and added a brown butter chocolate chip cookie and the sweet and spicy pretzels. I added a cup of the house hot sauce too even though my sandwich would have enough heat. The sandwich was delicious, a bbq pulled chicken on amazing bread with melted cheddar, slaw, and smoked pickled jalapeños. I can totally understand why this place is so popular. The bread makes the sandwich. I took a piece of the cookie and also, amazing too. The pretzels are my new addiction, but the bag was a bit tiny for 3.00. They just need to open a location near my office, they would do so well in this neighborhood.

Yelp
Got takeout with my coworkers - we got the yeuben and the green goddess sandwiches, and they were so so good!! The packaging also had this note in it (see photos), so exciting to see this business grow and thrive, chef andrew black and their team are killing it already (-:

Yelp
Dayum. That BEC brekkie sammy was so good. The crunchy hash was the main character that I didn't realize was missing from breakfast sandwiches. Top tier.

Yelp
There are a lot of great sandwich spots in the village right not but this one might be the best. Got the green goddess chicken club. Absolutely unreal. I'll probably try everything on their menu by the end of next week. Sorry there are no pictures. I was hungry.

jared m.

Yelp
This place is fantastic. I had the Roast Beef - it was a work of art. Even distribution of excellent ingredients and FRESH meat/cheese. The bread was also toasted PERFECTLY. If you like spicy make sure to get the home-made hot sauce. The cookie was also unreal. Not only is this clearly chef driven, but the makers are meticulously crafting every sandwich so it really tastes like you made it perfectly for yourself. I will be back frequently.

Eileen ..

Yelp
So tried this place for the first time today and to say the sandwich was fantastic is a understatement! I had the banh mi and it couldn't be better, from the bread to the filling,I've had a few of these and it's hard to find a good, I also had the potatoe hash brown which was really good plus they do 2 dollar drip coffee! I want to try the breakfast sandwiches next, people super friendly and the place is immaculately clean

Julia H.

Yelp
My sandwich and potato thing were good but I found hair in both of them, which was a little gross.

Shen O.

Yelp
Friend and I stumbled upon this new sandwich place and I'm sure glad we did! We split the Bahn Mi and the Cortese (Roast Pork and Broccoli Rabe) and both were incredible! The flavors are amazing but what was so unique for me was how clearly you could taste each of the ingredients - from the herbs to the perfectly roasted meats to the pickled veggies in the bahn mi and provolone in the Cortese - before everything comes together for the perfect bite. They should also bottle the salsa verde and sell that! Where other places stumble and Counter Service also shined was their bread - perfectly textured on the outside and pillowy soft on the inside. We topped the meal off with their sweet and savory pretzel pieces and a chocolate chip cookie topped with a touch of salt. Perfection! I can't wait to go back to try the rest of the menu - particularly the roast beef sandwich and the cheesecake!

Steph N.

Yelp
Visited the 14th street shop for the first time because I just couldn't pass up a classic roast beef and cheddar sandwich. You just order digitally and there are no tables, it's just a storefront for their entire food factory. I also got the cookie, pretzels, and the hash brown side. I will preface this with the spiel that the nice guy at the counter gave me which was that this is a Michelin inspired sandwich chain, so, expect smaller portions than you may want, but with big flavor. The roast beef was tender, didn't stick in my teeth with crunchy fat, rather it melted and it was seasoned. The cheddar actually tasted like something amongst the bread and beef, and the watercress was a spicy green reprieve. And the bread, thank goodness, was tender with a nice little crust and didn't overwhelm the contents with too much volume. I wish the horseradish came through a little more though. Now the cookie was worth every penny - it's a quality bake with dark chocolate chips, flake salt on top, and a caramelized textural adventure in every bite. I would go back just for that because I respect a well engineered bake. The potato thing was, as one other mentioned, a waste of time - deep fried to the point that it was translucent, served with way too much chipotle mayo for the size. That was giving me McDonald's sadly, a small money grab item. Grab a bag of chips instead. And finally the pretzels were a delightful little snack that pack a punch, despite being served in a tiny airplane sized bag. I would go again and try their vegetarian sandwiches for the flavor profiles. This place seems like a well oiled machine and I hope they keep up their values.

John H.

Yelp
Had the chicken club and the Cortese. Excellent. Rarely does a new sandwich spot live up to the hype. I highly recommend. Adding to the rotation!

Andrew D.

Yelp
This place is MAGIC! I could eat the chicken club every damn day! Thank you sandwich gods.
