"This casual spot has mastered mole, enchiladas, and other Oaxacan standbys" - julia chen 1
"Isai Cuevas brought a taste of Oaxaca to the heart of the Mission when he finally opened Donají in 2021. But the man is a maiz whisperer, and he’s been folding tamales for many years, catering and selling them at farmers markets around the Bay Area. Check out the catering menu for the full selection of tamales this season, including poblano cheese, pork achiote, and chicken verde, sold by the trio or half dozen. But whatever you do, don’t miss anything drenched in the richly spiced mole negro." - Becky Duffett, Eater Staff
"Donaji is a bright Oaxacan spot in the Mission that we hit up for quick dinners when we’re on a time limit, or for meet-ups with a third-tier friend who texted twice about wanting to catch up. The incredible mole enchiladas and masa-centric dishes, like the loaded tlayuda, come out fast, and it’s never hard to get a table or a seat at the bar. Wash everything down with some agua fresca while you field questions like, “What else is new with you?” " - julia chen 1, ricky rodriguez, lani conway
"The bright pink and teal walls at this Oaxacan spot will make you feel spontaneously transported to a beachside town where everyone exclusively wears jean shorts. The feeling will intensify once you get a glass of their sangria, richly spiced mole, and tamales with a flavorful chicken filling. Donaji’s thick housemade tortillas will also do wonders for your mood—always get a few on the side. After you leave, you’ll probably want to turn right around and go back inside. Alternatively, just keep this spot in mind for small group dinners, casual date nights, and solo meals on a Wednesday." - julia chen 1, lani conway, ricky rodriguez
"We head to this Oaxacan restaurant in the Mission whenever we need an immediate serotonin boost. Everything at this counter-service spot is bright and colorful, from the turquoise and pink walls to the papel picado hanging above the bar. Fun space aside, fantastic food is also why we love Donaji. There’s richly spiced mole over enchiladas, tacos on thick house-made tortillas, and crunchy, frisbee-sized tlayudas loaded with beef, queso, and avocado. Add in rotating agua frescas and gooey churro donuts and you’ve got a spot you’ll return to any time someone suggests grabbing a quick bite." - julia chen 1, ricky rodriguez
