Maui Wildfires Leave Restaurant Workers Devastated—And Grappling With Tourism | Condé Nast Traveler

"As Naiwi Teruya watched flames engulf his Lāhainā apartment on the evening of August 8, his first thought was, 'I need to get to my kids,' says the 35-year-old executive chef of Down the Hatch, a casual seafood joint that once stood on Lāhainā’s iconic Front Street."

"Founded in 2015 by three childhood friends from Georgia, Down the Hatch brings a Southern twist to the aloha spirit. The classic watering hole serves shrimp po’boys, chicken and waffles, and Mexican-inspired fare like seared ahi tacos, but the real draw is the cocktails, which range from tiki favorites and Moscow Mules to craft libations like the Snake Oil with gin, dragon fruit, lilikoi kombucha, and CBD oil. Featured on Guy Fieri’s Food Network show Diners, Drive-ins and Dives , Down the Hatch also boasts the longest happy hour in Maui. It takes place daily from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. and features specials on appetizers, draft beers, and select cocktails."

14 Best Bars in Maui: Our Favorite Spots for Drinking Any Time of Day | Condé Nast Traveler

"Despite its unassuming spot on the basement level of The Wharf Shopping Center, Down the Hatch—which was famously featured in Guy Fieri's Diners, Drive-ins, & Dives —is one of the hottest places to eat and drink on the island. The vibe here is always popping, but especially during happy hour (3 to 7 p.m.), when you'll find bartenders slinging brews, Mai Tais, and tasty-looking fried things to a happy, lively crowd as some epic live ukulele wafts in the background. Don't leave without trying the Lava Lava Shrimp—crispy fried shrimp tossed in an addictively spicy aioli and served in a metal martini glass" - Kris Fordham

Seriously not worth the hype & wait!! This restaurant came well recommended in many social media platforms and reviews and SO….we went & were very excited but was very disappointed. Restaurant is mostly open air & most shaded areas were full that day. Despite telling my host that we would like a more shaded seating area away from the sun, he left us at a seat sun tanning under the sun when there were still some sheltered seats inside the building. We had to move ourselves to find a better shaded seat. We tried the Lobster & Crab Stuffed Grilled Cheese that everybody was raving about & I don’t understand why it has such good reviews. The bread was good, creamy sauce was okay but where is the lobster & crab? I can barely see or taste it! Fish & Chips was fresh but the batter was so poorly made, they were thick and soft. Chips were okay but we were not there for the chips. Lastly, we had the Crispy Coconut Shrimp which was nothing to shout about. Shrimp was fresh but small & it doesn't have the fragrant coconut crispy batter that I have tasted in other places & it was over-powered by the sweet Thai chili & mango salsa. Overall, Down the Hatch didn’t deliver & I will gladly bring my money elsewhere with better service & food anytime. Don't waste your time!

Amazing food in a chill, casual atmosphere. Come at Happy Hour and dinner for live music. Order at the counter and the wait staff will bring your food to you. The sign on the stairs to enter the restaurant lets you know how long the wait will be for a table. All dishes have fun presentation- This is a great spot to hit for happy hour! The POG Foam Mai Tai, Lava Lava Shrimp, and the Lobster & Crab Mac & Cheese were the best! Parking note: Park on the street for free if you can, or in a side parking lot (for a fee)

Times Visited: 1 I came for the fish tacos and they did not disappoint! Crispy, with some really excellent 'melt in your mouth' fish, topped with a bunch of awesome ingredients made for really delightful fish tacos. Probably the best I've ever had! Though there is a part of me that thinks the ingredient ratio is a bit off... Tacos kept leaking ingredients when I would take a bite. But overall, excellent. I am mildly disappointed with the chips and salsa... Chips aren't much to write home about, they're quite hard and while they might be made fresh, they definitely weren't hot when they came to me so that magic is kind of lost. The salsa is also not much to write home about, and desperately needs a change to make the flavor a bit more BOLD. It's such a weak flavor it's hard to notice what it's even made of. But I'm glad it's included with the meal, and would rather have free weak chips and salsa rather than no free side. The Coconut Crystal Shrimp appetizer though? Heavenly PERFECTION. They could not have made a more perfect dish. Sweet, sour, fresh, fruity, tangy, crunchy... Excellent. No notes on that! The staff were helpful, and I liked how hands off the experience was, just ordering from the front (and thank goodness, you can get your own unlimited soda refills), and while the atmosphere was maybe a notch or two too loud, I like how it was a local musician and I'm overall happy with the experience.

Google
Visited for happy hour for the first time. You place your order at the counter and then find your own table. If you'd like more drinks you order from the bar. Most of the tables were dirty as they had not been wiped off between customers. We had to ask the server to wipe down our table but it was still sticky. Despite lacking a bit in service and cleanliness, we were very impressed with the dishes we ordered! We ordered the coconut shrimp which was served with a fresh mango salsa, the lava lava shrimp, and the lobster and crab grilled cheese. They were all delicious and would order all again!

Google
I went there fully expecting a tourist trap. NOT! Phenomenal food, very friendly servers, helpful order taker, great vibes, pleasant live music, prompt service. Prices were right and did I say the food was awesome! A “must do” in Maui. Lava lava shrimp with rice and veggies is fantastic! Tacos were fresh and delicious and so was the sampler. I would encourage them to umph-up their drinks though. Cocktails were weak and left a lot to be desired. Stick to beer and standard stuff and your experience will be perfect!

Google
The line of people waiting says it all 😋 The food was great great. We asked direction to the guy at the information booth and gave us a free lava lava shrimp cocktail ticket 🎟 and that lava shrimp was onolicious. The foods are all so delicious. Price is just right. Service is great as they put us in a lower table because we have a small kid with us. Our server was 👌 awesome.

Arrived at 10:20am. Before the lunch menu switch and I didn’t want to wait so we ordered breakfast. You have to order at the counter and then find a table. We all found suitable items. The women ordered a mimosa flight and enjoyed it to the end. The food came out quick and hot. Everyone finished their plate no problem. Happy hour here starts from 2-5 with entertainment. Definitely work the visit.

Our group had lunch at Down the Hatch - Maui one afternoon after doing a submarine tour in the area. We saw an order of the Lobster & Crab Stuffed Grilled Cheese going to anther table and knew we had to try it.. and we're so glad we did! It was so very tasty! We also ordered the shrimp tacos, calamari, loaded fries and bacon brussel sprouts.. everything was delicious! Even though it was a hot afternoon, we found a table in the shade overlooking the koi fish pond.. and had the best time!

Yelp
This is a long overdue review for when I actually visited. I really wish that they open up again when possible. I must say that this place is awesome! The ambience is nice and really ocean/beach themed. It's nice how they have rocks and a water path throughout the outer part of the restaurant. The service is like a casual restaurant. Simple but perfect. My favorite part though, is of course, the food! The tacos are literally the best tacos in the word. I wish Down The Hatch had many locations! The tacos are the perfect taste for tacos. Down the Hatch has seriously mastered their tacos. Their mango smoothie and Piña Colada are also pretty good. If you find an opportunity in the future to go to this place, you absolutely have to go to this place.

Yelp
My family and I came here in May 2023. The food and vibes here were great. They had live music when we went. I ordered the lobster and crab grilled stuff cheese sandwich for myself and also the crispy coconut shrimp to share. I very much enjoyed my sandwich and the sauce that was on it. Love the seafood. The coconut shrimp was super good as well. Nice and crispy. The mango on top made it even better. Everyone enjoyed it. I was so shocked to hear about the fire. Sending prayers to everyone there.

Yelp
My family came to Down the Hatch around 4:00 PM on a Thursday (07/20/23). The last time I was here was about four years ago with my fiancé, and the line was out the door with absolutely no place to sit. Surprisingly, when we came there was just a short line and we were able to find a table for five right away. IMPORTANT NOTE: If this is your first time eating at down the Hatch with a party of two or more, I suggest one person waits in line and orders the food while the other party looks for a table as it can be extremely difficult and frustrating. Anyway, as for the food, I ordered the lobster and crab grilled cheese. It came with four separate slices, which was more than enough to share with my fiancé. Each bite was filled with the lobster and crab stuffing in between a delicious, perfectly toasted piece of bread. It had a delicious chipotle sauce drizzle on top which added so much more flavor to the sandwich. I wish the dish came with more fries, but fries were skinny, and cooked perfectly-not to crispy or under cooked. We came during happy hour, and I ordered the my Thai and my fiancé ordered the lava flow. My mai tai tasted delicious and had a delicious POG taste with every sip. My fiancé's lava flow was the perfect refresher after a hot day. Sitting is all outdoors, but there are umbrellas over most tables. They have a nice bar with a good amount of selections as well. 5/5 recommend if you find a table :)

Yelp
Good eats! This was a casual restaurant where you order at the counter, grab a number, and food is delivered to your table. There is a counter where you get your own utensils and napkins. We ordered the following to share: - Local Fish (Ahi) Poke Tacos - Captain's Catch - Cantina Pig Plate - Crispy Calamari - Buddha Bowl Of the dishes ordered, the crispy calamari and ahi poke tacos were our favorites. The restaurant was packed and loud. There's a Live Music & Events board that you can check out for live entertainment daily, at various times. There's really not a lot of service, aside from delivering food and clearing the tables. If you need water or utensils, it's up for grabs at the counter. Overall, we enjoyed the food and the vibe. I was happy with my pina colada that had just the right amount of rum! :-)

Yelp
Was concerned about hitting up a favorite tourist spot but I'm so glad we did! We luckily beat the crowd for a Sunday dinner. You simply order first and then find a table. We luckily quickly snagged a table for 8 in front of a separate shaved ice spot located adjacent to the restaurant. Everything we ordered tasted great. Even a simple chicken Caesar salad was done right. See my pictures for food ratings. A koi pond is in the middle of the restaurant and our kids were given fish food with their meal to feed the fish! Definitely recommend this spot.

Yelp
Ambiance: open space bar restaurant opens until midnight, order through the counter and find your own table Service: very fast for ordering and serving food, attentively brought water and cleaned table Food: seafood influenced menu LAVA LAVA SHRIMP - **** crispy shrimp, lava lava sauce, green onions, pickled red onion, flavorful and mild spicy, recommend DOUBLE SCRATCH BURGER - **** add cheese, juicy patty, recommend French Fries - *** thin cut Price: moderate portions and decent prices, about $15~$20 per person for food

Yelp
Had the fresh catch of the day grilled. Forgot to ask what the fish was and didn't take a picture. It came with white rice, broccoli and carrots. My parents ordered the fish and chips and lava shrimp which I did take a picture below. The shrimp is fresh. It's open air dining with a cool pond with goldfish.

Yelp
Great food! My favorite was the ahi poke tacos which were a monthly special. Very casual location with a beautiful patio and bar. The lines can get very long but once you order the food gets out quickly. The only con is how pricy it can get! There's an additional 3% kitchen service charge. I also liked that they had gluten free tortillas available but that was also an extra charge. Tip: definitely check out some of the local free newspapers in Maui. A lot of them have coupons for down the hatch! The gift shop at the lahaina courthouse also had some coupons last time I went.

Yelp
Another wonderful location to eat a meal out. Great vibes with live music. Different restaurants to order from and then eat outside with other visitors. Another one of my Favorite means in Maui. I got the frozen pina colado but didn't like that much. Overly sweet and very frozen so got plenty of brain freezes. Very cute to look at but I couldn't drink more than half. My aunt ordered a pork plate of some sort. Very big portion unfortunately I thought this was alright. The pork (at least on this day) was overly salty and no other flavor besides salt. The mango salad was refreshing and we all agreed that was the best pet of the plate. We got the lava lava shrimp appetizers which was so good! Very filling since it's fried. That sauce is chefs kiss. I recommend that. The star of the meal was the lobster rolls we ordered. One of the best lobster rolls I've ever had (and I've only had two great ones!) that's a definitely must get if they still have that on the menu. I dined here in early 12/2022.

Yelp
This place gets so much hype. It's dingy in the front but really nice once you go downstairs and enter. The food was mid, very diner-esque but if you get a coupon from any local store then it's worthwhile

Yelp
We were told about this place from some foodies friends and we decided to stop in while on Maui to have some lunch and a cocktail. The menu looked inviting and after looking at some other menus in the same area, Down The Hatch sounded the best anyways so we gave it a whirl. After you step downstairs, for brunch and lunch you order from the counter. Dinner it says you will have table service. My husband and I decided to split a meal because we wanted to also try other places through out the day and this way we get to try more. Lol. Worked out great because the dish we picked was way larger than we expected. We ordered their special that wasn't listed on the menu. Blackened mahi mahi with furikake rice, sautéed shrimp, mac salad and a giant fresh salad that had arugula, mango, sweet potatoes, peppers and more with a deliciously sweet vinaigrette. We also ordered two cocktails at the counter. Once ordered we sat at a high top round table next to one of the fish ponds. The decor is amazing down there with beautiful trees, fish ponds, bridges and more. It was beautiful. Very cool looking for a restaurant bar in the middle of a strip mall. Our food and drinks both came out fairly quickly. The dish we ordered not only looked beautiful, it tasted beautiful. Probably some of the best mahi mahi I have ever had in my life. Perfectly seasoned and crisp up on the outside, juicy and flaky on the inside. Wow this was an incredible dish. I would love to have that dish again. Every bit of it. So glad someone recommended this place. I am not sure we would have tried it if we didn't know it was there.

Yelp
One of the stops on our honeymoon to Maui. Walking in it isn't much but after you seated, it has such a vibrant and bright vibes. Arrived around 11:30am and was seated right away for brunch. We got a pint of mimosa, avocado toast and southern style moco loco. Everything was very tasty! Especially the moco loco!!! The price wasn't too bad for Maui

Yelp
Read some great reviews about this place & liked how they were open past 10pm- which is a rarity in Maui I've heard. I think they stay open until midnight or 1am most nights! AMBIENCE We got here on a Tuesday night- and it was POPPIN!!! Live music & sailor trivia event followed- lots of knot-tying involved...have legit island vibes! It's a good time & the whole bar & seating areas are outdoors. There's an adorable moat (haha) that runs through too. So cute. There are also 3 TVs behind the bar so there's something for everyone. FOOD I ordered the local grilled fish tacos & their fish happened to be mahi mahi. I expected it to taste dry & flavorless, since this spot seemed more like a bar but NOOOO- it was amazing! And I usually hate fruit with my tacos, but this combo worked. Salsa tasted really generic like it came from a bottle but the tacos were great. Fish tastes fresh- which was most important! And I was so impressed with the fact that they will prepare fresh fish you catch as well. How legit is that! DRINKS I didn't try any cocktails but I heard the POG foam mai tai & mule island style were pretty well balanced in flavor. Foam part didn't taste flavorful though. I got the mule mocktail & loved the tartness of it. CASUAL Order at the counter & seat yourself. Very laid back but a fun spot to eat, especially for late night when everything seems to close early. It's on a busy street with lots of shopping & dining options too. Water is serve yourself which honestly I think is perfect for bars. If you show your receipt at the shaved ice spot next door, you get 15% off! Nice PARKING It's street parking only fyi, so plan accordingly.

Yelp
The Lobster and Crab Stuffed Grilled Cheese is what caught our attention, and it did not disappoint. The bread was fluffy soft, and the sandwich was quite filling. Very good! Also wanted to try the whole fried fish, but it wasn't available on the day of our visit. We also arrived at the very last minute to order breakfast. Mom went with the Southern Fried Chicken and biscuit, which was the perfect size for her. Hubs ordered the Pork Belly Benny - poached egg cooked perfectly and liked the crispiness of the pork belly. Kiddo enjoyed the ahi tacos, and the other kiddo liked his fish and fries. Decent portions for the price, and we enjoyed the atmosphere.

Yelp
Down the Hatch restaurant is a seafood restaurant located in Lahaina and boy is it good! Reasonable prices for lunch with super fresh seafood that is full of flavor! We spent the day in Lahaina and we're looking for a good place to eat for lunch. Excited about the good reviews on Yelp, we decided to try Down the Hatch. We ordered the lava lava shrimp appetizer, grilled lava lava shrimp tacos, seared ahi tacos, and the fresh Ahi fish sandwich, and everything was excellent. Especially the seared Ahi tacos, was very generous on the ahi which was surprising. Everything tasted very fresh, and full of flavor. The tacos were accompanied by housemaid chips and salsa, and the Ahi fish sandwich was accompanied by fries. Simple flavors, but definitely a big hit!! My daughter just gobble down her all he fish sandwich, my husband couldn't stop talking about how good the food was! They also offer a kamaaina discount of 15%. We will definitely come back next time we are on Maui.

Yelp
POG MAI TAI FOR THE WIN This place is one of few that i would say are worth the wait. The food was yummy, the drinks were good and strong, and the outdoor/indoor seating is so nice in the Lahaina weather.

Yelp
Another recommendation from a friend. She went here last summer and really liked it so told me about it. Upon research I found out that it was on a DDD episode! (Diners, Drive-ins and Dives) So it must be good. ;-) After a long day of traveling, tired and hungry we ended up here on our first night in town. The line to order moved fairly fast and our food came out even faster! We all liked what we got and would visit again.

Yelp
Highly recommend coming here if you're in Maui! there was a 15 min wait when we came but it didn't take too long, we ordered and found a table + food came out fast + we got the shrimp po boy, lava shrimp and crispy fish tacos and everything was delicious! Big fan of the shrimp!! The po boy had soft buttered bread and came with shoe string fries yum + the mango salsa on the tacos was divine. Also the fish tacos (came with 2) were HUGE! Biggest tacos I've ever seen + nice ambiance with ponds and koi fish + outdoor seating (can get a bit hot but they have large fans and shaded seating) My second favorite meal after Tin roof!

Yelp
We were in the area shopping and I had this place bookmarked. So incredibly glad that we stopped by! We got the fish and chips and it was absolutely fabulous. It must've been the most fresh fish and chips that I ever had and one of the best I've ever had as well. The outside was battered and fried to perfection. It was a nicer thicker batter (if you like that) that was crispy on the outside, and totally moist and juicy on the inside. The pieces of fish were huge! The shoestring fries were quite good as well. I must add that the staff were extremely helpful, accommodating, and fabulous! I had a walker, but there was no way to get down the stairs, and immediately a staff member grabbed the walker and brought it down for us. They have outside dining and it's quite packed. But we ordered online and the food was ready promptly.

Yelp
Basement waterfall and koi pond in an interesting courtyard. There are numerous umbrellas for shade and places to shop and poke around at after your meal. It's centrally located and an easy place to stop by before or after the many excursions leaving from the harbor. Founded by 3 food industry vets from Georgia with executive chef Alvin Savella who won Maui Mags chef of the year in 2018. The menu has some items that are interesting fusions of Southern and Hawaiian like the Southern Moco Loco. My must order however was the whole fried fish which comes plated beautifully with abundant spinach salad and sweet potato sides. Tasted great and came out pretty quickly, love the way the fish was presented fully upright. Kids got the cheeseburger and coconut shrimp. The cheeseburger used great quality Maui cattle and tasted like a perfect cheeseburger, it came on a bed of shoestring fries which all of us loved. The coconut shrimp had a distinct coconut flavor unlike other places and was topped with a mango and a nice sweet/spicy Thai sauce.

Yelp
We were recommended Down the Hatch by multiple people and we loved the restaurant's atmosphere! Live music was great and everyone was very friendly! I would definitely recommend getting the lava lava shrimp here! Crispy and juicy shrimp with an amazing tangy but a little spicy sauce was perfect to go along with a happy hour drink. I got the tacos as well, which was similar but the mangos made the sauce a little sweeter which I loved. My friend got the Ahi poke which tasted great! Definitely didn't seem the most fresh I've had in Hawaii, but the taro chips matched very well with the dish - it is a great appetizer! My friends and I got the lava flow and the Mai Tai for drinks - I loved the lava flow (very sweet) and the mai tai was very strong (but gets the job done!)

Yelp
This restaurant was so lively and fun. They definitely had the best atmosphere out of all the places we ate at during our trip. It has outdoor seating surrounded by a little river of many beautiful koi fish swimming around the tables. You go downstairs and order at the front, then you are seated. I found this method to be very efficient. There is a big bar at the front which had TV's playing the game and also a shaved ice place where we got some yummy dole whip to eat while we waited. However we found out if we went after, we could get 15% off with our receipt. We waited about 20 minutes in a line going down the staircase to the restaurant but the food didn't take long at all and the servers were all welcoming. We got the famous lobster and crab grilled cheese and the fried whole fish, which was sun fish. The fried whole fish meal was excellent and flavorful. The fries were hot and crispy. The presentation of the plate turned heads as well. The lobster and crab grilled cheese was actually not that good to us. It tasted very mushy and watery. We were expecting bigger lumps of crab/lobster melted with cheese and no tomato. The prices were fair and portions were big, so it's okay. Two other menu options that caught my eye was the spicy caesar salad and lava shrimp. I would go back to try those!

Yelp
A local shop provided us with a coupon for a free lava lava shrimp app with entrée purchase. So we dropped in around 11:45. The line was long but moved pretty quickly. You order your food and beverage, pay, and are seated with a table number for delivery of your order. The lava lava shrimp arrived fairly quickly, we were able to try a few bites before our entrees arrived. It was good with just a little spice. I ordered the local fish tacos, which included a mango salsa and came with a generous amount of fish. They were good, I would definitely recommend them. My husband ordered the ahi tuna melt. He didn't love it. Said tasted mostly like tuna and salt. Make sure you pick up plenty of napkins for your meal as the tacos and tuna melt get messy! We didn't eat the chips or fries that came with the meal. Saving room for shave ice!

Yelp
Was only gonna come here if we happened to get back really late, but got back fairly early and decided to just try it out. We had a coupon with us and got the lava lava shrimp. It was fried shrimp with some sauce, pretty good. The shrimp had a good bite to it and the fried parts were crispy. The fish and fries are a basic choice, but was actually really good. The fish is super tender with a delightful crunch. The fries looked a little sad, but are fried and seasoned perfectly. It also came out piping hot, which is fun. The fish tacos seem to use the same fish as the fish and fries, so it's already pretty good. The mango salsa was my sister's favorite. The tuna melt and burger seemed pretty average, but not a bad choice.

Yelp
I was looking for some good places to eat while in Hawaii and stumbled upon a YouTuber that recommended this place. This place gets pretty busy but you'll always find a spot to sit and eat and enjoy the view with live music from the locals. My first time I went here I had a loco moco on top of fried rice. Never in my life have I ever had loco moco this good! The egg was cooked to perfection and the gravy sauce was on point! This is by far my favorite to get a loco moco! The second time I came here before I left back to go home I had the loco moco but with fried cubes of potatoes! That was just as good as the one I tried with fried rice! I hope to come back here someday when I go back to visit Hawaii.

Yelp
My husband researched this place for our trip to Maui and really wanted to check it out. We went at a busy time and waited a bit for our food, which is totally expected. It was a little confusing on where the lines where, an employee had to direct everyone to where the actual line was. No servers or anything, you go up to the counter to order, they give you a number and you are seated anywhere. Half the tables were in the sun, but we luckily found a nice little spot in the corner. The employee taking orders was really difficult to understand. It was loud, and she spoke really quickly about where the water and the napkins were, we were a little lost. The food itself was excellent I got the lobster and crab stuffed grilled cheese and my husband got the chicken sandwich. Mine was definitely the definition of "fusion" with local bread and sauce but in a mainland "lobster roll." I should have known since it is called "lava lava sauce" but it has a bit of a kick. I have a super low tolerance for spice, my husband was unphased. It is pricey, but the portion sizes are huge! I had one half for lunch and one half for dinner, so it was two whole meals for me. Totally worth the price. My daughter also gobbled up the fries, which were really tasty. We were also confused on what to do with our plates, since all the tables were always cleaned but the bussers are super stealthy and I never saw any of them. We double checked at the front since we didn't want to be rude, but were told to just leave everything on our table. Overall a great meal, worth checking out in Lahaina.

Yelp
Food - Food was delicious! There were so much shrimp! Very good value. The shrimp was also very nicely fried because it stayed perfectly crispy even after being doused in syrup. The waffles were also really moist with a mice crispy exterior. And the sweet corn was the perfect touch to top off the plate! Breakfast potatoes were a little over cooked (a bit burnt) but I thought it just made it even crunchier which I enjoy. Everything was delicious! And at s good price too. Service - Really friendly and fast. Ambiance - There was live music when we visited and it was very enjoyable to listen to. Its mostly outdoor seating, so things get quite wet when it rains...but thats to be expected. The seating area is shared by nearby stores. Casual and nice vibes.

Yelp
Awesome place if you're looking to eat somewhere on Front Street. You basically order at the counter then put your number on a table. There's a bar and people were watching the football game (Go 49ers!!). There's also a koi pond here, which was really nice to see. The cashier and server were friendly and great. Server was also attentive! We ordered the truffle fries, fish and chips, braised pork, and fish tacos. Everything tasted awesome. Portions are huge, so be wary.

Yelp
This place is popping! If you're ever in the Lahaina area of Maui, I recommend trying this place out. 1) Lobster and Crab Stuffed Grilled Cheese: a must-have! Portions are shareable, the filling is very flavorful and delicious! The sauce is pretty addicting (5/5) 2) Lava Lava Shrimp: a smaller appetizer but very delicious to try. The sauce is what this place is popular for; you'll know what I mean once you try it (5/5) 3) Mermaid Tenders: it's okay, it's basically chicken tenders with a savory sauce; you're not missing out if you don't get this (4/5) Overall, I would say get the grilled cheese and the lava lava shrimp. Atmosphere is pretty casual. You order your food at the cashier, then grab a table with your number and wait for them to serve you. Honestly, you can't go wrong with anything off their menu. Highly recommend!

Yelp
This restaurant was popping every day we were in Lahaina, so we decided to finally go in on our last day. Worth it!! The ambiance is great with the courtyard setting, koi pond, and big bar. Even though it's order at the counter style, we still had great service from the host who told us how everything worked. We had no issue finding seating, but some days when we walked by it was PACKED, so be prepared for that. We had a coupon for free lava lava shrimp - and y'all, this was excellent. I don't even like shrimp!! We also got fish and fries, and the Cajun catch of the day. My fiancé said the fish and fries were some of the best he'd ever had. I loooved the Cajun fish, especially with the garlic furikake rice. Although this place is more sports-bar feel than seafood shack feel, the fish was super fresh and cooked perfectly. Finally, drinks came pretty fast and both mai tais were great. I'm a sucker for the foam!! Ultimately we enjoyed our experience and wished we had gone earlier in our trip, because we definitely would have come back for happy hour and adult shave ice. Something to look forward to next time!

Yelp
Can't say enough good things about this place. Came for a pre race meal and was blown away by the quality of food. Only thing better than the food was the service! Grabbed a seat at the bar and was greeted immediately by my bartender Jade. She beyond amazing. Bubbly, personable, super attentive and had such nice conversation, meanwhile helping to tend to the rest of the bar simultaneously with her coworker Matt. She also recommended the Cajun ahi which was out of this world. Full of flavor and super fresh. They both are rockstars and definitely spread ALOHA Thank you for an awesome experience start to finish! Will definitely be back the next time I'm in Maui!

Yelp
No reason to not give them 5 stars. Everything was just phenomenal. Tip: if you go to the information/activity booth outside the restaurant (before you go down), just ask for down the hatch coupons. They'll give you one for free lava lava shrimp. Guys. It is AMAZING. I'd seriously come back for just that. Can't say enough good about it. The presentation is fantastic too. I got the macadamia nut crusted mahi and it was unreal. Paired with the salad and buttery rice -- it was marvelous. Wife got the fish tacos and she didn't even share with me which means they were phenomenal. We also got the chips and salsa. Frankly, the salsa wasn't anything special at all, so that was kind of disappointing. But we got the cheese sauce and that made up for it. My only complaint would be the soda options. It was generic cola which was a bummer cause I was really looking forward to my Coke Zero. Other than that it was fabulous and I'll certainly be back!!

Yelp
Cool order-n-sit outdoor dining plaza with live music. Locals rave about this place and I can see why. It's centralized to everything going on main street Lahaina and offers up a good variety if entrees. Curious to see what it's like at night. Bet it'd be a lot livelier with the lights and PA system blaring and a sports game on their big tv. I trust Down the Hatch as a meal de-faminer during the daytime for now--it's close enough to those excursions at the pier that you can practically crawl to the restaurant after a long water day.

Yelp
In whalers village, down in the basement area. It's open seating. Food is a little expensive, but you mainly go for the bar/happy hour ambience. Water and utensils and everything are self serve and they're pretty chill about pushing the tables together. BTW if you go to boss frogs they sometimes have coupon cards at the register :). The calamari was great, thick cuts, good sauce flavor. Smaller portion but satisfying enough. The lava shrimp was amazing, there felt like there was so many and I enjoyed the addition of the pickled onion with the sauce. The fish plate was a bit smaller compared to other places and so were the burgers but I suppose fitting for location and ambience wise. One thing is that I did not like the fountain drink water- but it may be typical for maui tap water. My parents really enjoyed the music and I saw a lot of people socialising. It can be a bit loud at night, but prob the spot to go before partying? Overall, go for happy hour or late night live music and ambience. It's a fun time especially if you like drinks since it seems to be more of a bar.

Yelp
I came here for happy hour, which runs from 2-5pm. You order your food first, get a number, and then wait for your food to be brought to the table. The HH offers a few drink specials and 15% off on appetizers. For drinks, we tried the Mai Tai ($7) and Lava Flow ($7). Both of them came in a cute tiki glass cup. The drinks were decent while on the sweet side. I did prefer the lava flow more though. Since we weren't too hungry, we just ordered a Sampler Plate ($22.06 for HH) to share. The plate included kalua pork quesadilla, lava shrimp, and calamari. The calamari only came with 4 pieces and were ok. I did enjoy the lava shrimp with the crispiness and sauce it was tossed in. The quesadillas came with 4 pieces. They were pretty fulfilling, except it was more beans than anything inside. It was also strange that half of them were drizzled in ranch, which is a weird pairing. Nothing really impressed me here. The outdoor space in the middle of the courtyard would be fun with a group of friends as it was quite loud. But they were also playing the news channel talking about politics, which just didn't fit the vibe. P.S. Bring your receipt to Breakwall Shaved Ice for 15% off, which is located in the same place.

Yelp
Very good service and ONO food. Definitely lived up to the hype! Fast but BUSY so get ready w your order Stunning hostess and friendly. Everyone has a cool ass sleeve tattoo Poke special was whack... don't go w specials. Seared Ahi Poke that was overcooked Ahi fish sandwich - seared perfectly and still red in the middle. Lovingly drenched in mayo sauce. Juicy goodness! Kids menu - cheese quesadilla with crispy shoestring fries and a drink + dole whip. Amazing value! Caesar salad w bacon bits added avocado Crispy coconut shrimp - spicy chili sauce YUM! Also had Pina Colada and Lava Flow - perfect for the hot weather.

Yelp
The food was actually decent, but there was a hair in my shrimp (see photo) so I wouldn't come back here. The vibes were nice though, so it's unfortunate :-/ there's a cute little coy fish pond in the middle of the restaurant, which is outdoors. They also have this cool thing where you can buy a six pack for the kitchen, so I did that.

Yelp
The dishes here were very creative. I miss this place. So sad that it is now temporarily closed. I hope they are able to open back up soon and wish the best for them. I love the lobster and crab roll. Very cheesy, soft and creamy, everything I wanted after a long hike around the beautiful Maui island. Fish dishes were all fresh and presented beautifully. The line was long but worth it. It did take a bit of time to get our food but service was overall great! I enjoyed sitting outside because they had these cute fish ponds.

Yelp
Great eating and drinking spot, a lot of different nationalities frequent this establishment, close to ocean and boat cruises. Will come back

Yelp
There's always a long line here. We managed to dine here but the wait wasn't that long. The music was blasting and the bar full. Our food came quickly. Fish and fries - generous serving. Fried fish was good but the fries too salty. Blackened Cajun fish and veggies. So-so. My husband kept dipping his veggies in my tartar sauce. Poke special. Good but according to the Poke lover, it was great. It's just your typical tourist restaurant you'll find everywhere.

Yelp
Mahi Mahi Fish tacos and Ahi Fish Sandwich. After coming to Lahaina for a second day, and this day was HUMID as heck, we chose this spot for a quick bite to eat. Down the stairs we went and quickly ordered our food and drink and worked our way to finding a seat in the courtyard. What came next was an amazing delivery of fresh fish and taste. The wife got her Mahi Mahi that she uses as her staple go to food when uncertain of anything else. What she got was an amazing meal with giant pieces of fresh Mahi Maki that made it near impossible to close the shell to be able to eat it. Added with the fresh pico salsa that was on top and she stated without hesitation, one of the very best taco's I have ever had. I chose the Cajun Ahi burger. Not entirely certain as to the size that would come, worst case I would get a well seasoned piece of fish to eat. What I got was a darn near steak like sized pieces of Ahi that was bold in flavor as I had wanted and perfectly cooked piece of fish that when put on the bun with some pickled onions and lettuce made for a fantastic burger without beef! Do not let this place slip you by as you will miss out on a great food experience!

Yelp
A dining experience not to be missed [Lahaina Maui] The restaurant is located in the heart of historic Lahaina and in the center of the lower level of the Wharf Cinema Center. That's the shopping center across the street from the Banyan Tree. They specialize in Hawaiian cuisine with a southern twist... that's right, this establishment was founded in 2015 by 3 native Georgians who have moved to Maui and what you get are dishes prepared with locally caught seafood and fresh ingredients. This is a counter-service restaurant. After placing your order find yourself a seat anywhere where available and your food will be served to your table. We ordered the DTH Fish and Fries. Excellent beer battered local catch w/ homemade tartar sauce. I enjoyed the crispy shoestring fries. Love the relaxed atmosphere w/ outdoor seating. They have live music performances and open until 11:30p 7 days a week. DTH even made it to Guy Fieri's Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives on episode 'From Spicy to Icy' aired on season 26. Save your receipt and get 15% off shave ice next door at Breakwall Shave Ice! Review #2720

Yelp
I liked how DTH is Open late! The kitchen closes at 11:30 pm and the bar closes at 1 am! They also got great vibes with all the lights and live music. This place is an order first and then find a table type of vibe. (No reservations!) Food I got: * Lava Lava Shrimp * Crispy Calamari * Macadamia Nut Crusted Mahi * Lobster and Crab Grilled Cheese Cocktails I got * DTH Mai Tai * Lava Flow * Maui Sour * Spicy Watermelon Margarita The cocktails are all good and strong! :D the food was all delicious, my friends and I all got food comas afterward! My fav dish was the lava lava shrimp!! The lobster and crab grill cheese is worth a try but It is a lil heavy for my liking. The macadamia nut mahi was yummy, but the fish is a lil dry. The calamari was good, but nothing special! Overall, this place is worth a try!!

Yelp
I wasn't sure what to expect but this place was surprisingly good! I had the lava lava grilled shrimp tacos and my fiancé ordered from the breakfast menu, a southern style loco moco with had country gravy and both dishes were delicious! We both had POG Foam Mai Tais, they had a kick that snuck up on us! You have to find your own spot to sit but this wasn't a problem, they leave plenty of tables. Stop by for a drink and appetizers, you won't be disappointed!

Yelp
My favorite meal on my Maui vacay! We made our way up to this part of the island to do the coconut farm tour and chill at Napili Beach. The north west side of Maui is super popular and was the most touristy area we visited. By the time we got here we were tired and hungry and ready to go Down the Hatch! From the popularity I thought there might be a long wait but on this Tuesday we were able to walk right up to the counter and put in our order. From there you grab all your table items and drinks, pick your own table, and wait for your food to come out. The seating is all outside and has a fun beachy vibe! We ordered the sweet potato tacos, veggie burger, and blackened fish tacos. Everyone really enjoyed their food! And as I spoiled it in the beginning- this was my fav meal of the trip! You can spend a good couple hours in this area. Lots of shops, dining, bars, and quite a few historical landmarks. There's even a banyan tree! Great way to spend a day in Maui!

Yelp
My friends and I went to Down the Hatch on a Wednesday night, and the ambiance was amazing. The area has outdoor seating and there is a bar, which is a big plus, and there were two guys singing! I am sensing a theme when it comes to Hawaii and their live entertainment, but I'm not complaining at all. It was honestly such a fun experience and it made it that much more lively. I drank more than I ate, but I particularly remember the lava lava shrimp and brussels being my favorite food items. I wish the calamari was actually crispy and not the kind that looks like fish sticks, but they were still good. It took a while for one of my friends to receive her food, but that was the biggest "complaint" for the whole night. The drinks were all very delicious! There is also a menu that consists of $8 shots, which are fun, and dangerous. The workers were all pretty cool, and we befriended one (hi Gaston!) I even bought the staff a 6-pack of beer (it's an option on the menu) since my girls and I were having such a great time. I think DTH is worth the trip for a start (or end) to a fun night.
