"Finding a spot to please diners with a variety of food preferences and allergies can be stressful — until you find Eatery A. At brunch, dinner, and dessert, this Mediterranean-inspired restaurant excels at wood-fired pizzas, chickpea-cauliflower falafel platters, and San Marzano tomato-based shakshuka with sumac-spiced flatbread. Every day from 3 to 6 p.m., the pizza, draft beer, and wine are half price." - Karla Walsh

"When Jason Simon’s Ingersoll Avenue Mediterranean-inspired bistro opened in spring 2014, many locals thought its daily 3 to 6 p.m. happy hour — during which pizzas, draft beer, and wine are half-price — would be a short-lived grand opening fête. An entire decade later, this deal has never wavered; in fact, it recently expanded to begin at 2 p.m. The patio, bar, and restaurant are especially bustling during those hours as guests sip Toppling Goliath Pseudo Sue IPA and share wood-fired pies, like the #14 with red sauce, chorizo, pineapple, jalapeño jam, and cilantro. It’s far from the only time to visit, though. Eatery A, which takes inspiration from Spain, Morocco, Egypt, and Italy, is also where you’ll find some of the city’s best brunch fare. Try chef Andy Sayre’s towering benedicts, the shakshuka with sumac flatbread, or an oh-so-Iowa asparagus and sweet corn quinoa bowl with roasted tomatoes, green goddess, and romesco sauce. Whatever occasion you swing by for, there’s no better way to tie a bow on your meal than with the salted caramel budino. (Take it to go for a midnight snack if you’d prefer. It travels beautifully.)" - Karla Walsh Karla Walsh Karla Walsh is a freelance writer based in Des Moines, Iowa. "“Ingersoll Avenue is what we call restaurant row,” says Brian Taylor Carlson, food and dining reporter at the Des Moines Register. “You pretty much stand in one place, close your eyes, and point.” Anchoring this cluster of restaurants is Eatery A, located inside a former Blockbuster Video turned Obama 2012 Iowa campaign headquarters. Bask in that leftover positive energy (especially the movie rental afterglow) while munching on Mediterranean food, or take advantage of probably the best happy hour pricing in town: half-off pizzas, wine, and beer from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. every day." - Gary He

Eatery A I used to love this place, and I was so excited to have it since I hadn’t had it in 5 years. But I will say this was such a huge disappointment. Ordered the meat balls and arancini, it came out ICE cold and very old. We decided against any of the entrees due to this reason. But decided to get a pizza, because its pizza and pizza is always good and i used to think theirs was too. The pizza was worse, Caramelized onions does not mean adding sugar for sweetness, and they should say the onions are basically candy sweet on the pizza. It was overly sweetened. Over all, i will not be coming back and this place has gone down hill. Was unable to eat ANY of the foods. I used to love this place 💔 The manager was nice, but still made us pay for the pizza, no worries. I do not recommend this place anymore. Took 10 minutes for out server to even greet us but we were willing to look past that because we were hoping the food would have out weighed the terrible service and the fact the server did not look like she even wanted to be there. It seemed like a bother she was even waiting on our table. Unfortunately that was not the case and the food was terrible.

My husband and I went on a double date to Eatery A tonight, and we all absolutely loved the ambiance of the restaurant and the taste of the food. It was delicious, hot, and tasty. The decor, the different seating options (large booths, small tables, lounge type chairs), and overall vibe was stunning. We've eaten on the patio area in the summertime, and if you have a chance to eat outside, do it! It's worth it. At night, the nightlife of people walking, talking, and having fun surrounds you and adds a little extra entertainment to your dinner. Unfortunately, tonight we were quite disappointed in the service or lack of. It took us over 2 hours in total to get our drinks, apps, and dinner. We had reservations at 6:30 and left a little after 8:45. (Thankfully, we weren't in a hurry, but still). We ordered our apps and dinner at the same time since our server was taking so long just to bring us our drinks out (15+ mins), but it still took over an hour just to get our dinner. By the end of the night, we were the last table left in the restaurant (a few people were left at the bar area), and I had to grab our own to-go boxes from the side area, and located a random waitress and asked her to please help get our ticket or waitress. Our waitress finally walked up with boxes and asked if we were ready for our bill... no apology or acknowledgment that she her taking a bit longer tonight or in general. Our food was GREAT (and surprisingly hot when it arrived), but the service lacked a LOT. Hopefully, it was just one bad night and not an ongoing issue, but I will give them another chance at some point since their pizza's were so good.

Eatery A has been my go-to spot for killer vibes, top-notch service, and food that usually makes my taste buds do a happy dance. I’ve raved about their sangria (fresh fruit and herbs for the win!) and that Spanish octopus dish that’s normally a flavor explosion. But, folks, my last Saturday night visit during the dinner rush was a bit of a plot twist! No reservation, no problem—scored a table for two faster than you can say “tapas.” My chair was cozying up to a giant pillar, but as a right-handed pro, I worked around it like a champ. Our waitress was an absolute gem, zooming in with charm and speed. Ordered my trusty American coffee and my pal got the famous sangria—slammed with fruit and fabulous as always. Coffee, though? It showed up lukewarm, probably because the cup was big enough to double as a soup bowl. Physics, you tricky devil! Appetizers were a tapas party: calamari, bacon-wrapped dates, and beets. They all landed at once—boom, efficiency! But the bacon was a tad soggy, the dates were mushier than my attempts at baking, and the calamari was chewy with a batter that couldn’t decide if it wanted to be crispy or not. Beets were… well, beets. Boiled and fine, like the reliable friend who never overshadows anyone. Main course time: my friend’s lamb sliders with cucumber salad were a hit, but my beloved Spanish octopus? Oh, honey, it took a wrong turn. Usually, it’s a gorgeous pottery bowl overflowing with 6-8 tender octopus pieces, sausage, and papas, all easy to slice and savor( pic from past is added). This time? A tiny bowl with three tough little octopus nuggets swimming in a sea of potatoes. I was looking for the rest of the dish like it was a treasure hunt! Plating matters, y’all—don’t mess with a good thing. I get it, the kitchen was probably busier than a beehive, but let’s keep those plates pretty and practical. Prices are creeping up (thanks, inflation), but I’m not mad about it—just make sure the quality keeps up with the bill! Eatery A, you’re still my fave, and one off night won’t keep me away. Maybe next time, I’ll bring my own coffee thermos and a diagram for perfect octopus plating. 😜 Keep shining, and I’ll be back for more sangria and that unbeatable vibe!

Went to Eatery A with some friends for bottomless mimosas on a Saturday. We were seated immediately and had our own private room! Our server was very friendly and quite attentive. She filled everyone’s glasses so promptly and always made sure that everyone had what they needed. For food, we ordered the Nutella French toast and Lemon Ricotta pancakes. They were OK. My favorite thing at the restaurant was the limeade. It was so refreshing!

Warm, industrial, pizzeria meets eatery. The wood fire stove is absolutely the cornerstone of the restaurant. A very easy atmosphere with the intoxicating aroma of outstanding pizza that meets you as soon as you walk in. Today, I order the asparagus soup, with a few small plates to-go. The Moroccan carrots, warm artichoke, and Greek cucumbers.

I absolutely love woodfired pizzas and this place is at the top of my list for the best. I love specialty pizzas as well and let me tell you these guys do not disappoint. We had the #10 and the #5. The #10 was a Italian meat pie with hot honey. Oh my god so good. The we also had the #5 which is a gyro pizza which I love gyros and I have never seen a place make a gyro pizza. This was amazing. Defiantly will be back to try them all!!!

Last summer I was going 2 to 3 times a week until I’ve pretty much tried everything. Unfortunately, on April 7, 2025 I took my son there at about 2:45 in the afternoon. The waiter came over, he asked what we were drinking & if we were ready to order; we had just sat down. He brought us water and didn’t come back for over 20 minutes. There were only three groups in the restaurant at the time and someone else brought out their food. He seemed more interested in chatting with the other two men that were doing paperwork on the bar where they could see us the whole time; he checked on one table and never bothered to come back and take our order. We finally got up and left. I have never had such horrible service at eatery a. I have been there over 30 times for lunch and it had been a favorite of my wife’s & I for dining out. I in fact wrote a glowing review last fall. This experience will certainly have us looking for another establishment.

Oh, what a meal! Great food, wonderful server. Less than $45, with two glasses of top quality wine.
