The Best Ice Cream Shops in Los Angeles, According to Eater Editors | Eater LA

"Tucked away on Third Street in Beverly Grove, Ecco un Poco offers a surprising, abundant selection of fresh gelato and cones that — like all its flavors — are gluten-free. Run by Milano-born Alessandro Restelli and his wife Alejandra Unger, the shop balances traditional Italian flavors with more gastronomical creations like American breakfast with gluten-free maple pancake mix, bacon, and blueberries, and “avocado toast” made with what it sounds like." - Eater Staff

The 6 Best Gelato Spots in Los Angeles - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"If you're the indecisive type, Ecco un Poco on West 3rd Street is easy to navigate: there are only a dozen flavors at any given time. And even though you can't choose from seven different single-origin chocolate varieties, the flavors you can sample are nothing short of excellent. There are a few signatures that never get cycled out, including one with toasted Piedmont hazelnuts that are, according to EU Law, the black truffle of nuts. If you want something sweeter and stretchy like taffy, get the honey custard that's luscious from egg yolks and caramelized honey. And if gelato runs here turn into a habit, be aware that there's a rewards program." - sylvio martins

Google
The lady working there was so nice when we asked for samples today! I loved their fior di latte flavor! Their ube flavor is also yummy with a strong purple sweet potato flavor.

Tim Raiter

Google
Dark chocolate drop in the waffle cone?! Are you kidding me:) one of the best ice cream i ever tried. All natural, not too sweet, very tasty. Sicilian pistachio was fire.

simona g.

Google
I don't know why it took me so long to write my appreciation for this place, Alessandro and Alejandra. Maybe because I am Italian, and we are not frequent reviewers! But you all need to trust me. This is the BEST gelato shop you can possibly find in Los Angeles...and the United States. They also offer flavors that I never had in my homeland, Italy. Like their white chocolate/passion fruit. Sublime. And their hazelnut? Divine. Get pints of those! And of coconut...and of dark chocolate...

Mariia Merzliakova

Google
Authentic Italian gelato :) so glad to have this place in my area. I love ice cream but can’t eat it at most local ice cream shops because it has soooo much sugar in it. Ecco un poco has a real dark chocolate flavor without sugar which I appreciate

Grace Lee

Google
Amazing authentic gelato with gluten free/vegan cones (with chocolate inside the bottom of the cone), vegan flavours, and all gluten free options. You can try up to 3 samples. The flavours are pretty unique and super creamy - even the vegan ones. It’s on the pricier side but thought it was worth it based on quality. Small patio in the back and seats out front of the shop as well.

Nero T

Google
Their vegan options brought us here, but I was wowed by their flavours. If it's still around, I recommend the white chocolate passionfruit. The owners are very friendly and helpful. Some outdoor seating as well.

Yunah Hahn

Google
Crazy good pistachio flavor. And the passion fruit seasonal flavor. My goodness, I regret not trying sooner. I thought all the five stars came from people who prefer gluten free and I always thought I’m glad I can eat any gelato. This is the best pistachio gelato period. Don’t miss my Italy trips anymore. Found my gelato fix here in LA.

Google
World class gelato and gluten free Italian desserts! Stopped by Ecco un Poco this weekend for gelato and loved the unique flavors this little but mighty shop offers. I got a scoop of olive oil rosemary and a scoop of hazelnut served in a gluten free cone. We sat in the quiet and serene back patio to eat our gelato. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable and the flavors delicious. This is a perfect dessert place. I cannot wait to try the gluten free tiramisu. Because of its location on 3rd, parking can be an issue but we were lucky and park right upfront. If you crave real Italian gelato, this is the spot for you!

Yelp
Highly Recommend, every time I'm in LA, I stop here! The Gelatos are amazing! Always fresh and new flavors almost weekly. The owners are very nice and super passionate about what they make. The ambiance is uber cute too. A nice little deck outside with a vine covered gazebo seating area. Keeps the busy street noise at bay! They've got some nice vegan options and so many interesting flavors 4.5/5 Stracciatella (chocolate chip) 5/5 pistachio
google avatar

Yelp
We had the Pistachio and the Melon gelato. Wow! This is probably the best pistachio gelato I've had - you can really taste the nuttiness and creaminess of the real pistachios. The melon was great as well - super light and refreshing, tasted like ripe cantaloupe. Amazing customer service! They were very patient with us since we were indecisive. They allowed samples and explained each flavor to us.

Yelp
Hidden gem in LA--an authentic Italian gelato shop run by a lovely welcoming husband and wife, both named Alex. The vibe is cozy and truly feels like Italy The Pistacchio di Bronte gelato is a must: creamy, rich, and full of real Sicilian flavor. And don't miss the homemade cannolis. Everything is made with so much love.
google avatar

Lily L.

Yelp
Super cute little gelato shop! The owners are from Italy and it really shows in the difference in how the flavors taste! They let you sample flavors, which rotate pretty often based on seasonal flavors. I got the hazelnut with rainbow sprinkles and it was so delicious. Also have two friendly and cute dogs!
google avatar

Cat M.

Yelp
Very delicious. Small but very welcoming. I've lived in Italy & I'm always searching for places with dishes that taste authentic. This was it! The hazelnut was perfecto! The Staff was pleasant & friendly. I definitely want to come here again!!

Yelp
What a great way to cool off on a hot day! Walked in and was greeted by the wonderful, friendly associate at the gelato counter. Love that they had at least 5 vegan options to choose from. We were offered samples before choosing our flavors. I went with one scoop of ananas and basilco which is a pineapple and basil sorbet. It was delicious and very refreshing. The flavor was more pineapple than basil heavy which is how I like it. My dessert companion went with the Lavender London Fog which is also a vegan flavor. I had a taste of this one too. The name is so pretty. This is a really unique flavor in a good way. It's quite floral in its undertones and has lavender flowers, earl grey tea, and an oat milk base. It also was a lovely shade of lavender. As for seating, they had one table with chairs in front on the sidewalk if you prefer to people watch but they also had a very lovely patio in the back which I found to be more shady. There is no seating inside. The scoops aren't very large. They were so good though, I definitely wouldn't have minded a bigger scoop. These sorbets are quality and it's evident in how good they taste. Also love the uniqueness of the flavors they offer. Would certainly return again! "Ecco un poco" means: "here's a little". This business is family-owned and operated (husband and wife team) and gluten free. Metered parking on the street. Featured as 1 of 5 places for the "Best Gelato in LA" by Infatuation. Also featured in EaterLA as 1 of 17 "Essential Ice Cream Shops".

Yelp
A little scoop of Italy in LA! After our recent trip to Italy, we've been on a bit of a gelato binge. This cute little shop had just what we needed! I went with the Parmigiano Reggiano Pear while my partner opted for their Bronte Pistachio. The owner (who is from Milan!) described the Parmigiano Reggiano Pear as a savory flavor marrying two unlikely things that work amazingly well together. Give this weekend special flavor a try if you're feeling adventurous! The Bronte Pistachio was simply scrumptious! My partner said it was "the most pistachio-est pistachio gelato" he's ever had.
google avatar

Kaitlin D.

Yelp
The shop is owned by a wonderful, friendly couple from Italy. They let us try the flavors and I love that their flavors rotate, makes coming back a new experience every time. I'm gluten intolerant and their entire shop is gluten free (even the cones!). We got the peanut butter chocolate and stracciatella. Both delicious, flavors were clear without being overpowering, and sugar levels were perfect. We enjoyed our scoops on their cute little patio in the back. Definitely coming back to try some new flavors and in a cone next time

Yelp
insanely good. I parked in front of it and noticed people going in and out for 30 mins straight so I can by after dinner. every sample was 10/10 and the lady was the sweetest. excited to come back and try more!

Yelp
We happened upon this cute gelato shop after volunteering in the area. When we saw they offered vegan gelato we quickly found a metered spot on the street to go in. The decor is so adorable and all of the flavors of gelato reminded us of being in Italy! The guy who helped us was so helpful and offered a sampling of the few vegan gelato options. Delicious!!! Also they have a cute patio in the back with a selfie wall for photos! Loved it! They do offer baked goods but none were vegan. Hopefully they add more vegan flavors and backed goods!
google avatar

Yelp
Super cute, Italian owned gelato spot. Fresh flavors, I mean super fresh!! Not your standard ice cream spot. If you want authentic Italian gelato - this is the spot.
google avatar

Yelp
Not surprised why this place has all 5 stars-- it's because it's absolutely amazing. The workers were super nice and friendly, and were super patient with me as I sampled several flavors to decide which one I wanted. I ended up going with the coffee flavor in a cone. Great flavor of rich coffee, without the bitterness and with a creamy texture. The cone was also delicious. I love gelato and will be back here again if I am in the area!
google avatar

Merrill O.

Yelp
I've been going here for a few years now and I swear, it just keeps getting better and better! 5+ stars in my book! Absolutely delicious gelato. And I love that the owners (Alex & Alex) get to know the regulars and their tastes. Whenever I come in and they have a new flavor they think I'll like, they are sure to recommend a free sample. All their gelato is delish, but nothing beats their Salted Caramel and their Dulce de Leche. Yummmmmmm. They also have a cute patio out back in case you want to enjoy your purchase there!
google avatar

Yelp
Echo un Poco delivers more than just great imaginative gelato, gluten-free waffle cones, gluten-free cannolis, and delicious TiraMisu of the highest order, but also a warm greeting when you enter owners Alessandro and Alexandria's small establishment on 3rd Street. They make small batch gelato with new flavors added every week. On weekends they prepare amazing GF Tira Misu and GF cannoli's that enabled me after 20 plus years being diagnosed with Celiac to enjoy these fantastic Italian desserts. On this day I called and had 3 cannoli's ready for pick up and I couldn't resist sitting at their outdoor table enjoying a gf waffle cone with Caramel gelato and a new flavor, cupuaçu (pear/banana) non dairy gelato. There is also a back patio if you want to sit and enjoy their creations. All this and they serve joy.
google avatar

Rachel N.

Yelp
Such a great little shop! The couple who own the place are so kind and friendly. This was our first time coming but we will absolutely be visiting regularly. Love that things are gluten free! The waffle cone was delicious. My boyfriend got the dark chocolate flavor and I got the fiordilatte which I would definitely order again (I'm a big lover of vanilla ice cream).
google avatar

Max G.

Yelp
Excellent gelato served by the friendly owners. The storefront is small, but there is seating on a back patio. Street parking.
google avatar

Kiran S.

Yelp
The gelato here is amazing! We had the lime and strawberry. It was so delicious and fresh--I was told they squeeze the lime fresh in house. The service is also great! Everyone is so kind. Love the seating area (a nice cozy patio in the back). Will definitely be back!
google avatar

Keyonda A.

Yelp
The ice cream is still awesome and so is the service. My play son wanted to try their ice cream and since I was treating, he tried a tester and next thing I knew he was walking out with a tall waffle cone if chocolate ice cream. Your tastebuds will never be disappointed. Beautiful setting to done in.

Alyssa F.

Yelp
BEST ICECREAM IN LOS ANGELES!! We found this place while driving and it truly was the best. The staff was so friendly and the gluten free cookie was also great.
google avatar

Yelp
Park on the street, it's metered! (side note: if you do choose to park on the streets and depending on how much you're willing to walk, you can easily get to the Farmers Market!) A cute and delectable gelato place that opened in Beverly Grove, ecco un pocco is a gelateria emphasizing quality over quantity. Personally I've been wanting to go here for a while, and it was really worth the trip. The two staff that helped my mom and I were really personable and nice! Also very important to note -- there is a three flavor sample limit. I don't mind because I will come here as often as I (and my stomach) can haha. Be sure to get there early in the day as flavors do sell out. There's a nice quiet patio in the back where you can zone out and enjoy your cone in peace. I got the Fiordilatte and hazelnut and it wasn't overly sweet. It reminded me of when I went to Italy and now thank god I don't have to book a plane trip there just to enjoy gelato! Go here!!!!!
google avatar

Yelp
EDIT FOR CLARIFICATION: Gelato is denser than ice cream, so the portion sizes being different than that of a regular ice cream shop are justified. The owner responded and helped me clarify this point. 5/5 service and 5/5 product. The original review that I wrote follows: This place lives up to its name! It means "here's a little" and although the portions are small, I think it's still worth it since you're getting gourmet-quality gelato anyways. The service is impeccable. There are at least two people manning the front and that helps speed up service, as it can get busy at times. Also, they let you try up to 3 flavors before you make your decision. They also separate the flavors into cups if you buy 2 scoops or more but they know that the flavors wouldn't blend well when melted. There's also a little terrace in the back to sit down and hang out. So even the ambiance is that of a welcoming European gelato shop. Will definitely be back when I'm in the area again!
google avatar

Rita G.

Yelp
I cannot get over the flavor at this gelato place. It is absolutely amazing. Did some tastings before my friends baby shower to help her pick the flavors. Day of the baby shower... It hit the spot! The espresso tastes like affogato Did I mention their customer service is fantastic?
google avatar

Jadyn K.

Yelp
I absolutely loved the piedmont hazelnut flavor! It was creamy and not too sweet/sugary which I loved! This was the best hazelnut gelato I've had and the staff member who helped us was super nice! Definitely recommend and will be coming back! Found nearby street metered parking on a Sunday afternoon no problem.

Karen G.

Yelp
Delicious and healthy gelato! Great for gift cards for a special occasion. Very nice owners.
google avatar

Jaq V.

Yelp
This is hands down the best gelato shop in LA. From the owners to the flavors, I am so impressed. A few of my favorite flavors are the lemon, crema, hazelnut, cheesecake and mint chocolate chip. The shop offers special flavors that change day to day, but they have many staple flavors you can count on. I love that this is a small family business, authentic, gluten free, zero waste and they offer vegan flavors. Please give Ecco Un Poco a try, I promise you'll love it.
google avatar

Lindsey W.

Yelp
I can't believe I haven't written a review yet about this neighborhood gem! I have been coming here since they first opened and have been delighted each visit. The owners (look up their backstory online - so cute!) are so kind and clearly put love in every gelato they make. Follow their instagram for weekend special flavors. They offer gelato classics and unique flavors with ingredients sourced around the world. Most (maybe all?) are gluten free. I also love their waffle cones. Crunchy and sweet!

Talia L.

Yelp
Small business all crafted in the place cones handmade are amazing. Owners are super nice having different flavor vegan and kids friendly as well
google avatar

Shannon W.

Yelp
Authentic gelato, authentic people, and amazing warm ambiance. It's easy to miss on the street but we decided to give it a try after having dinner near by. it was the perfect amount of sweetness and the flavors are on point. def give it a try if you're close by! customer service was friendly without being forced. don't forget to say grazie ;)
google avatar

North H.

Yelp
I've tried dozens of different gelato spots and hands down this spot has the best pistachio flavor. Try it before you argue with me! The owners are the ones operating this place and they're very nice, they said they import the pistachios from Italy. Another thing they got locked down here is the texture of the gelato, just the perfect temperature. It just melts in your mouth.
google avatar

Billy S.

Yelp
Incredible gelato. Better than what I've had in Italy. The traditional hazelnut and pistachio flavors were out of this world. Enjoy it on their sunny back patio.
google avatar

S G.

Yelp
The hazelnut gelato was my favorite. There's a cute back patio to sit and enjoy your gelato by yourself or with company. Clean and excellent service.
google avatar

David W.

Yelp
Everything is gluten-free many vegan options delicious gelato and sorbet, and the cannoli was great. I want to try everything.
google avatar

Sophie H.

Yelp
Came in on a weeknight and we were the only ones there. Both Alex's were working and they were super friendly and helpful. They offered samples and explained what the flavors were (if we didn't know). They have a ton of different options for GF, DF, Vegan, and classic. I ended up getting the vanilla and hazelnut and both were super fresh tasting and creamy. Would definitely come back!
google avatar

Justin W.

Yelp
I don't say this indecisively, but I can't remember having gelato that made me feel the way Ecco Un Poco's just did. Yep, I was just there and felt compelled to contribute my thoughts and opinions to the review realm as soon as possible. You're probably wondering "was it amazing or was it absolutely terrible?" after all, why else would anyone feel it necessary to write a review as quickly as possible? I am very happy to report that it was one of those discoveries that I will be sharing with others and returning there myself for a long time to come; it was wonderful. I had two scoops in a waffle cone, one of Chai Latte and one of Nocciole or "hazelnut" for those of you who don't speak a lick of Italian. Normally, if I see gelato or ice cream with nondairy base ingredients of either soy or some other nondairy milk, I shy away. But after trying a taster of the chai, that prerequisite of mine flew out the window. It was so good It wouldn't have mattered if it was LA tapwater. After I tried the second I immediately ordered both, stating that I would be back to try different flavors every time I returned. I'm pretty sure the two Italians working there are the owners and obviously take great pride and care in what they are doing. They were very friendly and chatty and were enjoying my enthusiasm and slew of questions. I love spending money on goods that have had great care placed into them. This place is the real deal, made by hand, probably with ingredients that are carefully picked out and recipes that have been closely guarded. You may want to thank me for convincing you to try this place based on this review, but it's not necessary. I will be more than satisfied knowing that many people will be finding this place and having a similar experience to mine.

Laura A.

Yelp
Everything I have tasted here has been absolutely delicious! It is all gluten-free and there are vegan options as well. Highly recommend.
google avatar

Masha K.

Yelp
I absolutely love this gelato place! Their flavors are delicious! Some of my favorites are definitely the lemon sorbet! The straccetelli if that's even how you spell it is absolutely delicious. It's a vanilla with some chocolate chips in there. The hazelnut taste like Ferrero Rocher and I absolutely love the coffee flavor, it taste like an Affogato. And the owners are absolutely the best!
google avatar

Dee R.

Yelp
This is an awesome place. I walked pass this place but when I looked up at the sign and saw the word Gelato I had to stop in and see what it is about. I was really surprised by the many choices of flavor. I was offered a taste test so I chose Pistachio which is totally different from what I purchase in the store. You see I can't have ice cream so I was told to try Gelato and now I don't miss ice cream. I must admit it is on the pricey side but very much worth it. Stop in and treat yourself to some Italian gelato and make your mouth happy
google avatar

Ari B.

Yelp
I don't know what "ecco un poco" means but to me it translates as delicious. Little "ma and pa" joint if the ma and pa are a young Italian couple. The pistachio gelato is subtle and complex while being not too sweet. The chocolate gelato is dairy free yet rich. (Also got a couple of deserts to go that I will review later.) Cute spot in the back to enjoy your treats. Try this place out and support your friendly neighborhood small business.
google avatar

Alexis C.

Yelp
Excellent gelato, kind staff, cute shop... what else could you want? I had chocolate and coffee on a cone. My wife had hazelnut and pistachio in a cup. All four were SCRUMPTIOUS! I inhaled mine and stared at my wife until she offered up the rest of hers lol. Yeah, she has better taste than me because the hazelnut and pistachio were the winners. Next time I'm getting those. The chocolate and coffee were very good though! Metered parking. There are a few tables in the back and outside in the front. Visit this spot. Run here. Don't hesitate.
google avatar

Kacy O.

Yelp
Wonderful shop with friendly service and delicious gelato. Free samples of different flavors. Ordered raspberry sorbet, tiramisu (prepared with the exact ingredients of a tiramisu dessert) and vanilla with cone covered chocolate bits (think Choco tacos). Thoroughly enjoyed the coveted patio in the rear of shop. Hope to return again. Thank you for a wonderful treat after lunch.

Julie Z.

Yelp
Ecco un poco had great gelato! We enjoyed the straciatella, London fog, and affogato. It was really nice too that everything is automatically gluten free.

Bradley M.

Yelp
AMAZING gelato and the nicest staff. Highly, highly recommend grabbing gelato here if in the mood for dessert. Simply incredible and we've had a LOT of gelato.
google avatar

Tiffany H.

Yelp
Best gelato in Los Angeles. I've had this place bookmarked for the longest time ever, and I'm so glad I finally got to try it. Ecco un poco has authentic flavors and unique ones, too! As someone who enjoys eating tiramisu, I was pleasantly surprised when I saw a tiramisu gelato flavor! The tiramisu gelato tasted exactly like a tiramisu with a punchy espresso flavor. I also got to try other samples such as the gianduia, salted caramel, and goiaba (guava). I loved them all. The flavors were bold, and the gelato wasn't overwhelmingly sweet, which made it even better. I ended up getting the 3 scoops size to share with salted caramel, tiramisu, and goiaba (guava).

Yelp
Looking for an authentic Italian creamery stateside? You've found it! As I walked along 3rd street boulevard after having light lunch I then stopped in for a spot of dessert. When I walked in everyone had smiles on their faces. I took a looksy at some of the flavors and coconut is a favorite of mine so you know I had to try it. I especially loved that they have pieces of coconut meat in the coconut based ice cream that's coconut in flavor. It was so tasty. It gave vibes of tall green grass on a sunny day at the beach--Island vibes. An ideal place to find yourself in. Fresh and only a few ingredients, you'll want this too. Owners Alessandro and Alejandra (From Italy and Mexico) were inspired to bring the vibrant colors of a Californian sunset with their ice cream. Nailed it! Small batch ice cream parlor that sources ingredients locally. Friendly vibes. They have signs to let you know what you're getting, for instance, dairy or non dairy. I appreciated that the coconut ice cream was not super sweet and was creamy. I wanted vegan ice cream so I got vegan ice cream. They have a cute backyard for enjoying ice cream or gelato outdoors. It's also noteworthy that they are working on increasing their dairy free and vegan offerings. Their homemade waffle cones are also dairyfree and vegan. As if that was not awesome enough, all their packaging is compostable including cups and spoons. Ice cream is perfect any time of the day and all year round; For birthdays and every days!!! Ice cream still does a disappearing act on my tongue --still one of my strongest superpowers! Remember to live while you're still alive. Every little thing is everything. You've got to try this Italian-Mexican creamery!!! "Everyday can be a better day despite the challenge all you have to do is leave it better then you found it."
google avatar

Emily T.

Yelp
The gelato was so good! I'm going to be dreaming about the Watermelon and London Fog flavors I tried. I can't wait to go back especially since I left my cannoli at my friends house even the cones are gluten free

Yelp
Loved everything about this little gelato gem! Came late night on a Saturday with a friend and we were both pleasantly surprised by both the quality of the gelato and the impeccable service. From the second we walked in we were greeted by two of the happiest and sweetest employees. You could tell they were truly excited to explain the different flavors to us and they made us feel so welcome. We were offered samples of everything we wanted to try and honestly - everything was delicious. You really can't go wrong with any flavor they have here. My favorites had to be the gianduja (a rich chocolate hazelnut) and the fiordilatte (a creamy and thick milk flavor). Don't be fooled - they look like plain vanilla and chocolate but I promise they're 10x better! I ended up on a whim ordering the chocolate chip and mint and you can definitely tell they use real mint. Their authentic and unique take on even "original" flavors will definitely have me visiting again when I'm back in the area. I ordered the 2 scoops for around $7 which is standard for gelato. They even have a sitting area in the back where you can relax and enjoy your treat!

Yelp
July in LA, all i was craving was some good gelato. Spontaneously walked in after brunch, really clean small place, friendly staff offered tastes of any flavor. I got coffee and pistachio, both really good. I was able to grab the only table outside right on the curb :/ . Wish there was more tables or a bench with an umbrella, there is space by the entrance!

Yelp
The gelato here is simply the best in LA. Unlike other ice creams, it doesn't leave you with that unpleasant phlegm from poor quality milk or a sugar rush--your body instantly recognizes the superior quality of the ingredients. A mouthgasm every time!!

Yelp
Excellent! Dietary needs taken into consideration; menu well marked. Friendly proprietors. Lovely little outdoor seating in back with a sun shade.
