The 38 Essential Restaurants in Detroit

"Southwest Detroit is arguably the taco truck capital of the city and the Diaz family, who runs the El Parian mobile food trucks, in many ways lead the pack. With several locations — some that go under their own distinct names and deliver unique concepts — that can reliably be found at the same address daily, El Parian offers fiery and slightly tangy tacos al pastor, complete with slivers of pineapple; tacos campechano (asada mixed with chorizo); and tacos filled with tender cuts of suadero. For fans of mariscos, hit up its sister seafood truck, El Imperio, at 7812-7816 Vernor Highway for a variety of seafood cocktails, citrusy ceviche served on top of crispy tostadas, and even chilled oysters. While the locations are pretty consistent, be sure to follow Parian’s social media accounts for updates." - Serena Maria Daniels

The 27 Best Places To Eat & Drink In Detroit

"“Mexicantown,” also known as Southwest Detroit, is the only place you should go when you’re craving tacos here. There are plenty of overdone, guacamole-made-at-your-table restaurants in the area, but skip those and head to our personal favorite, Taqueria El Rey. This super casual spot is known for its wide variety of tacos and whole grilled chicken, which is cooked under a tent next door. If you don’t feel like tackling an entire bird, choose from their lengthy taco list that includes everything from al pastor to beef tongue." - sara barron, sam faye

The Diaz family’s trucks anchor Southwest Detroit: al pastor carved from the trompo, suadero, and campechano. Spotlighted by Eater Detroit’s citywide guide, with a steady Vernor presence and a seafood sibling nearby.

Will never order from them again. They don’t follow directions, food was mushy & soggy & instead of styrofoam containers they give you paper plates with aluminum foil, limes were dry… the asada/steak was so nasty & I asked for my corn tortillas fried they gave them to me soggy, not fried. 0/10. Wouldn’t recommend.

So today was my first time at this spot. At first I wasn't overly impressed with the location. So that had me wondering how the food would be. So I gave it a shot, glad I did I have traveled the 48 states and have seen a lot of people attempting to replicate Mexican food. These guys definitely hit the nail on the head. I will definitely be returning. Only reason I dinged this place is due to the fact when I walked up to order my food the music was so loud that I couldn't hear the guy talking a little respect when taking orders would compliment this place above a 5 star

Just by the crowd, you know this place will be special. The tacos were well seasoned - the quesadillas was crispy, with the type of cheese that has the slight burnt texture to compliment. The presentation could be improved, but what can you say from a taco truck.

Food was really good. We ordered a taco dinner and quesadillas. However, I received something I didn’t order. I didn’t want to correct my order because it was a challenge to order the first time. Though it was a couple of tables to eat outside, we decided to eat in our car. The parking lot was full of patrons.

I’ve been going to these guys for over 8 years now. Since their car wash location. They are hands down my favorite in Detroit. The Al pastor are my go to always! The ceviche is amazing.

Can’t go wrong with any of the El Parian trucks. Moved to this location earlier this year from the car wash down Vernor. The tacos de pastor are my go-to.

A fantastic burrito and for the price , at least double the value of other places i've been to. With takeout prices increasing, this is win any time I'm in southwest.

Very excellent food truck. This place has the most authentic Mexican street food in Southwest Detroit. I had three vegetarian tacos with a red hot sauce and a green crema hot sauce that were both deliciously spicy in a good way. The corn tortillas, toppings (including the radishes and lime), and the hot sauces really hit the spot.
