El Portal de Echaurren

"Francis Paniego exudes honesty, sincerity, passion and a love for his profession and his family (his brother Chefe is the maître d' and sommelier). He is proud of the legacy he has inherited: his mother, the late Marisa Sánchez, was the winner of the Premio Nacional de Gastronomía (National Gastronomy Award) in 1987.El Portal, the cornerstone of the chef's various projects, is a creative new take on his culinary roots, for which he brings his exceptional technical skill to bear on ingredients such as offal to produce veritable taste sensations. These dishes, served in the guise of tasting menus, are presented alongside a selection of starters to be enjoyed out on the terrace or beside the hotel's fireplace. The aim is to showcase the flavours of this beautiful region." - Michelin Inspector

We spent two nights here in May - and had a fantastic time even though it was raining and we weren't able to get outside as much as we wanted. The hotel itself is very good to excellent. We had a small suite, so it was roomy (although the carpets on the wall felt a bit odd). Everything worked perfectly. The real highlight was the food. We had dinner in the Tapas Bar and the restaurant. Service was great and the food was outstanding - even for a vegetarian. They actually made vegan croquettes for us, which I thought was really above-and-beyond. Highly recommended. Not inexpensive, but good value.

What is really special about Echaurren is the strong feeling of family and tradition. The hotel - and restaurants - have been in the family for 5 generations. They are celebrating their 125th year! It was very nice to meet all the siblings! We stayed at the hotel for two nights and dined at both of their restaurants - both restaurants are quite fine. In fact, we decided to visit the hotel because we had enjoyed so much the "pop-up" of their fine dining restaurant in San Sebastián a few years ago. Besides wanting to visit their restaurant, we also wanted to explore La Rioja and learn about the wines - and the hotel recommended to us a private guide - which was fantastic! Her name is ITZIAR CALLEJA - and we highly recommend.|In terms of the rooms, our room was modern and very large and the AC worked very well! However, it was not so comfortable... and missing some really basic things like tissues and a make-up mirror, and the shampoo dispensers did not work. The tub was awkward to use... The closets were not tall enough for dresses.. The bathroom is attached to the bedroom which meant that if someone had the light on when they were in the bathroom, there was light in the bedroom. |They also seemed very understaffed - for example, when we arrived there was only one woman there and she was rushing to help us with our bags and get back to the desk, and she forgot to tell my husband that he needed a room key to get into the parking lot - he did not appreciate going back and forth to the parking lot after a long drive and then when he did she was helping someone else. Breakfast is nice but also understaffed -- this morning they did not even give us a menu let alone ask us if wanted any hot food. |Overall, we recommend for the history and ambiance but hope they can consider the comfort of the rooms and the level of service.

Amazing hotel, beautiful setting, very stylish rooms (the view of the church was incredible whilst waking up). Dinner at Tradicion, outstanding! Loved every minute. Also bought their chef’s knife 🔪

We’ve stayed at Echaurren and had dinner in the restaurant. Amazing service, great rooms and a perfect dinner. The experience couldn’t have been better. We will certainly make our way back one day.

My husband and I absolutely adored this hotel and thoroughly enjoyed our 2-night stay in Ezcaray! The room was really nice, modern, comfortable and clean, with lots of light, and it was an added pleasure that they provided us with a bottle of wine and some snacks in the room. The service is top notch and the staff is excellent. The breakfast was amazing - best we've ever had in a hotel! A combination of buffet, table service and made-to-order egg dish options. The hotel restaurant is a true gem - and I'm not talking about the 2-star Michelin restaurant (Portal) there (we did not eat there) but its little sister - Tradicion, which serves more traditional local fare. We had a six-course lunch that was absolutely delicious! Everything was so well prepared and was served with care. Much of the food/ingredients are locally sourced. We only wished we had planned to stay longer!

The common spaces and restaurants I would rate 4.5/ 5 stars as well as the staff who were friendly and helpful. Beautiful breakfast area and charming bar and reception area. No doubt the nicest hotel downtown Ezcaray and a great base for La Rioja. ||I know that below will sound very picky but our entire trip to Spain was based on this hotel and I want to provide honest feedback for other travelers who select this hotel based on its Relais Chateaux distinction.| |We were disappointed by the room itself. We had the largest room in the hotel and the design/features in my opinion were cheaply done and not up to Relais Chateaux standards in our opinion. We have stayed at 10+ Relais properties and choose travel based on Relais locations. ||I understand the style is modern and clean, and the rooms do look nice. However, several drawers did not function in the IKEA style dresser, the futon in the sitting area looked cheap and not clean, and the bathtub was melamine or plastic, not porcelain. One sliding door in a closet also did not slide as it should have and one of the window shades fell off the wall the moment we pressed the electronic button to close it. We were able to fix it and just not touch it the rest of the time.||There was also no iron or steamer in the room nor a bottle opener in a 5 star wine region hotel.

We had an great stay at Echaurren and would highly recommend it. The chefs, Chefe, Javier and all the team provided us with the most amazing food and wines, with interesting and delicious flavours, delivered with such a personal touch. The hotel was very comfortable and perfect for our needs; Pedro and the team looked after us very well. The breakfast is excellent too!

Amazing little hotel with fantastic gastronomic restaurant. We had a large and very comfortable room with a large bathroom. ||But by far the gastronomic lunch was the highlight of the visit. Every course was outstanding!||Service was pleasant and efficient throughout,

Yelp
Food was excellent! Service was superb but there weren't many people when we were there. The apple dessert was heavenly!

Yelp
We ate at Echau traditionale restaurant which was the only one (of three) open on Monday evening. The food was outstanding and our servers Pedro was very hospitable and appreciated our efforts to hable espanol. The croquettes were delicious and they split the vegetable puree for our kids to share. Each entre - traditional meatballs, grilled sirloin, and leg of lamb ( for two) was of excellent quality and very well prepared. Try one of the modern deserts (ordered at beginning of meal) the chocolate pie with hot chocolate is like a chocolate soufley. Wine list has a great selection and we chose Lopez de Heredia Tondonia 2001 (same vineyard we had toured in the morning). This place is not cheap 20-30 euros per starter and entre but worth the price for treating yourself.
