The Best NYC Restaurants for Eating Outdoors When It Rains | Eater NY

"Looking for a casual outdoor option on the Upper East Side? El Tepeyac might be it. This small Mexican grocer with a grill in the back is home to some of the city’s top burritos, made with meats like cecina, bistec, and al pastor. Most people take their orders to go, but the small tables out front are shielded by scaffolding and make for scrappy outdoor dining in pinch." - Eater Staff

11 Restaurants Restoring Our Faith in NYC Burritos | Eater NY

"As businesses like Reyes Deli in Park Slope and Zaragoza in the East Village go to show, some of the city’s best Mexican food is found behind the counters of neighborhood delis and grills. Don’t be deterred by the fact that most of the burritos here come with mozzarella cheese: Fillings like carne enchilada, cecina, and bistec more than compensate. Try a burrito with the latter meat (whose name is derived from “beef steak”), which comes wrapped up with rice, beans, guacamole, and crema in a tortilla." - Robert Sietsema

I am impressed, El Tepeyac Market: Dalila's Tacos is rather darn cool. I had an awesome experience here at El Tepeyac Market: Dalila's Tacos. I am impressed, El Tepeyac Market: Dalila's Tacos was truly excellent. Awesome menu items, pleasant staff, charming mood - what more could you ask for? Phenomenal menu items, pleasant staff, charming ambience - what else could you ask for? They have excellent selection of items with reasonable prices for what u get. Every single thing that I have actually tried has been rather flavorful. Most everything I've tried until now have been quite great. Absolutely flavorful! Every single thing is super fresh! And workers were extremely polite and helpful. Pleasant staff. Their service is constantly very friendly and attentive no matter how busy they are. If I was ever in the area I would certainly come to El Tepeyac Market: Dalila's Tacos again. Overall amazing experience at El Tepeyac Market: Dalila's Tacos with courteous and accommodating service, will certainly return. Just, I really like El Tepeyac Market: Dalila's Tacos, and I know you will really love it too.

Google
Had a delicious Al pastor huarache and a very fresh pan dulce for desert in this charming place. Look forward to returning and trying more things. Highly recommend.

Google
They can be a little more expensive than their neighbor El Aguila (two tacos for $11 😑), but they’re open late which is nice. Carnitas is their best protein flavor wise - everything you want and expect although their birria on the other hand is terrible disappointment to anyone expecting something delicious! Almost like they put wayyy too much clove and cinnamon for their own good.

Google
The owner is so friendly and the food is amazing. It’s a perfect spot for late night Mexican food.

Google
A small Mexican convenience store that also serves great food. We ordered a couple dishes and both were delicious. Gràcias!

Google
Great local Mexican grocery store. Good food, happy to support a brown owned business in the neighborhood.

Google
Very late at night after travelling back to NYC on a Sunday this was open and we gave it a shot and order delivery! I was impressed. It also arrived hot. I ordered 2 carnitas tacos and shared a cheese quesadilla. The carnitas was juicy and tender. Late at night I honestly was expecting it to be a little dry. I was happy! 🤍 I might not need a late night travel excuse to order from them next time :)

Google
I usually just review restaurants but I also cook too - and for any Mexican groceries this place is awesome! All the staples one needs along with a few prepared items like guacamole and pico de gallo. And they also do really good tacos so you can also grab lunch after shopping.

Yelp
Amazing hole in the wall Mexican. A perfect al pastor burrito and a great bistec sope. Who knew.

Yelp
Amazing little spot for tacos. It's also a small grocery store, so you can also get a bunch of Mexican drinks and snacks. They have a small table in front of the store, and even though they only had once chair and we said nothing, someone very kindly brought out another. Very pleasant staff, and very tasty food. Would recommend!

Yelp
I was planning a visit to the nearby Museum of the History of New York, and decided to track down some inexpensive lunch before going in. This is a small Mexican-style tienda, with some fresh produce, and also a little taqueria. The tacos are sold in pairs of two -- I decided to try the vegetarian taco (though, to be fair, the meat counter looked pretty legit). They came out very hot, with a good quality corn tortilla, and a variety of vegetables (squash, corn, peppers, etc). The operators of the business were friendly, and they accepted credit cards. There is a little covered porch outdoors where you can eat, which is comfortable. The neighborhood is full of culture, and I'm really glad I ventured a few blocks away from the museum for lunch.

Yelp
Amazing Mexican food, fast service. The best taco place in an area full of good taco places. I've never tried something on their menu and not left happy.

Yelp
Addicted to the fresh guacamole, pico de gallo! Family run grocery store formerly known as El Tepeyec. Great restaurant also at 97th.

Yelp
I love their tamales, juicy, and tasty. I also try burrito tonight. Huge potion, tasty and fulfilling my stomach.

Yelp
Great, authentic Mexican food. Good service, and it's a store /restaurant . Great portion , nice and clean.

Yelp
I got two things here, an order of carnitas tacos, and a cheese quesadilla. I think they may have misunderstood what I meant to order for the cheese quesadilla, but overall solid food. Definitely not mindblowing food, particularly for the prices, but not bad by any means.

Yelp
I was really disappointed and upset by my experience at this grocery. With all the great yelp reviews, I thought I'd check it out and pick up some stuff. It's a tiny hole-in-the-wall market with a limited selection of groceries closer to the front and fresh meat and produce closer to the back. There are signs about ordering tacos and burritos but no prices--I wasn't really hungry so I thought I'd just pick up some guacamole since some other reviewers mentioned their guacamole was good. No prices on the guac so I brought up a small 10 oz container and asked how much it was. Imagine my shock when the cashier told me it was $9! The larger container was $15. I don't know about other folks, but I was expecting it to be more in the $4-$5 range for the smaller container. Whatever, I decided to suck it up because I was embarrassed and wanted to support a small business and because of the good reviews--maybe this guacamole would blow my mind. Unfortunately, upon returning home, I saw that this expensive guacamole had brown pieces of avocado in it--not browned from exposure to air but brown from rotting areas of the avocado. Not happy to have spent so much for poor-quality avocados. The flavor was very lime-heavy but nothing special. Plus, the cashier charged me a 3% credit card fee even after I'd asked about a credit card limit and fees (I had cash on me too) and was rude when I brought it up that she should have told me, since I'd asked and there were no signs. Anyway, I wouldn't recommend this market to people. The produce (which did have price stickers) were more expensive than average and the guacamole isn't worth the price or the rudeness.

Yelp
Some sinus clearing veggie packed chicken soup. I thought the meat would be fresher coming from a butcher shop.

Yelp
I was brought here by beli eats app and I was gravely disappointed. All week I had been hardcore craving a burrito and because of the great reviews and pictures, i was pumped. I order a steak burrito and a medium size guac on uber eats. The burrito itself looks pretty hefty. When I open up the box and take my first bite, it's just rice. I think to myself, "that's odd" and dig in more only to find a majority rice burrito with a little bit of steak. I usually expect a nice char/grill flavor from my steak but this was just standard stuff. The cheese was also a bit gooey for my liking. At least the guac was solid. Hope this was just an off day.

Yelp
This place was phenomenal. Easily the best authentic street style tacos I have ever had Detroit's Mexican town has nothing on this place. Bummer for me.
google avatar

Adriana M.

Yelp
Great spot to pick up on some essential Latin grocery items and dinner. I was impressed with the wide variety of items this small shop has to offer along with great tasting burritos. I was especially happy to find they carry dried chiles that can be hard to source but essential for many Mexican dishes like mole, and a variety of different salsas. They have a freezer out front with paletas and a small sitting area near the front door to eat your food. Would not count on this being available as there are only two chairs. More of a grab and go for the food options.
google avatar

Varun A.

Yelp
Amazing food, authentic, and family run and owned. Best Mexican food in the area. Don't go to el paso. Also very reasonable prices.
google avatar

Jessica M.

Yelp
This is a great place to get delicious food quickly. You can order for delivery, pick up or even eat in. The eat in space is technically outside but not grand. I recommend.
google avatar

Christine A.

Yelp
There seems to be some confusion about this place because all I found at this address was a meat/mini market. We asked the guys behind the counter about tacos and they laughed and said other people come in looking for tacos, too. In any event, they were very friendly and we ended up chatting and bought a few things. For a small market, they had a nice selection of ingredients for mexican or latin dishes. But NO TACOS!!!

Jess P.

Yelp
I came after hearing such rave reviews. Unfortunately- there were scatters of paper throughout my burrito. Yes... PAPER. I was completely thrown off by this, which made me question the sanitary aspect of it. I hope they can help me get a refund on this, as I traveled an hour to get this burrito. I included a picture of just one of the pieces of paper that I found.

Yelp
Quaint food market in East Harlem with amazing Mexican food. Cannot recommend the burrito enough. They don't skimp on the guacamole and it is phenomenal; so tangy and fresh. I got the chicken burrito and the chicken was seasoned perfectly. It came with a mildly spicy chile sauce on the side which complimented the burrito perfectly. I would buy a tub of this sauce. Can't wait to come back and try the other food in this place!

Yelp
For what they do and relative to the area Tepeyac is outstanding. Hell it would probably be good anywhere honestly. The burritos are delicious, the ingredients they use are fresh and used liberally. Don't sleep on the enchiladas - I had low expectations for them and was blown away by the generous portion (get the 5 ) and obviously by how tasty and satisfying they were. My only complaint was that I didn't get any salsa roja with my order but the tomatillo salsa was still good and it wasn't really a problem because I added my own salsa habanero at home. It's a small quibble for a place that is knocking it out of the park for NYC burritos, tacos, enchiladas posole etc. This truly feels like quality homestyle food.
google avatar

Stephanie P.

Yelp
Now this a great spot! Living in Harlem this became my go-to. The food always was hot and fresh with great flavors. Their burritos are great, but their pozole was GREAT to me! It was flavored perfectly and the portion was huge. I would recommend this place to anyone, they are very nice and the food is excellent. So glad I was find this spot.

Yelp
Amazing burritos and Chicken verde tamales! Can't wait to try their other items. The salsa verde on the side was delicious and the rice was absolutely phenomenal. Everything rocks from this place. My go to

Yelp
Perfect score. Easily. While searching for the best burrito's NYC has to offer, I learned of El Tepeyac Food Market. Excitedly, I made the hour trek from Brooklyn to its East Harlem store and was not disappointed. I ordered the Burrito Campechano. It was massive and delicious. The steak and chorizo, which I've never had combined in a burrito before, was juicy. The guacamole was very fresh and the yellow rice and beans were well seasoned. The burrito is very fulfilling. It costs $13. Cash and card are both excepted. There's minimal outdoor seating. Service was fast and professional. Although it's a grocery store, they have a kitchen in the back. Orders are placed in the front via the cashier who takes your order to the kitchen. The establishment has local and traditional NYC vibes. The building is a bit hidden due to construction and a large scaffolding obscuring its view. I would definitely go back with friends and family.

Yelp
I stopped by in search of mangonada ingredients and took my time perusing favorites and throw backs. The store is very organized and had a lot of favorites like Mexican candy, chamoy, flavors of Gatorade that aren't in all of the supermarkets, Mexican produce. The cashier was very friendly and helpful and they also take Apple Pay. Prices were fair and the store though small was clean. They also had a bucket to collect books for the neighborhood and that really resonated for their contribution to the community.

Yelp
Peor servicio, dicen que el pedido está de camino y nunca llega. Y cuando llamas la que contesta no está ni en la tienda!!
google avatar

Yelp
Best burritos on Lexington Avenue. Try a lot of places around here but this one definitely is the best.
google avatar

David T.

Yelp
DAMN their food is good! Was walking around hoping to randomly find a delicious lunch and El Tepeyac definitely delivered. Fresh, delicious food and great service. Definitely going back again.

Yelp
I have to say again and again the best Pozole in nyc I have been craving and try three different restaurant in my area and it's nothing compared to the delicious pozole this tiny store makes I live far and I and I'm only sticking here forever no joke it's so delicious
google avatar

Yelp
Mmmmmm really really fantastic, homemade Mexican food. Had the tacos al pastor, carnitas, and quesadilla carnitas. absolutely hit the spot, and Fernando the shopowner was so kind. We picked up drinks from the store too and they have two teeny weeny tables outside to sit down. Highly recommended it was so delicious, especially the carnitas!! Gracias

Shourin B.

Yelp
The bistec burrito is phenomenal, honestly some of the best steak I've had in a burrito

Kaela M.

Yelp
One of the best places to get food in the area. I literally eat here once a week. They're a tiny little grocery store, with an amazing kitchen in the back. Their burritos are HUGE for the price, the tacos are amazing, the guacamole is fresh, and they have fresh tortilla chips. Service is great, I usually call ahead for pickup and it's ready within 15 min. Couldn't recommend more, I send all my friends to this place.
google avatar

Del L.

Yelp
the best mexican food in the city, absolutely!!!! everything is SO FRESH and meticulously made. you can tell they are taking things very seriously over here. I've only gotten delivery and it honestly tastes like super high end dining because their ingredients and way of cooking is so legit. I am so happy they are honoring real Mexican food and not tailoring or pandering to rich white boring palettes like so many NYC restaurants do -- this place holds true to itself. Do not let the market layout fool you - the food that is being prepared for you is top notch and made with thoughtfulness, care, and a true heart -- thank you for making the phenomenal Mexican food we have all been wishing for -- please continue being wonderful and great - you will always have our support!!!!

Yelp
Awesome hidden gem. What looks like an order bodega or Mexican grocery store in the area turns out to be a mini to go restaurant. Small griddle in the back turning out al pastor and bistec tacos with grilled green onions. Fresh made pico de gallo and guacamole. Lots of cool Mexican snacks like dried shrimp, fried pork skin, and a variety of chips.
google avatar

Peter M.

Yelp
Tasty, hearty tacos! Usually taco places are lacking in portion size, but I finished my tacos from here full and satisfied. If you're going to eat here, I'd recommend getting it delivered. The tacos are made to order, so you have to wait a bit for your food and there's no where to sit if you order in store.
google avatar

Pei L.

Yelp
Update: don't order food delivery. After 30 minutes seamless called me to cancel the order. I will still use the grocery, but they are not prepared to run a regular restaurant out of this space. Friendly little store that has all your Latin foods although the concentration is Mexican. I love their cecina and buy it frequently for quick tacos. Great green salsa, guacamole and, pick de gallo. If you're lucky, there may also be tamales.

Colton F.

Yelp
This place is the pride and joy of East Harlem. In the time that I have stayed in the neighborhood this place has reminded me of my home in the San Fernando valley of California. The people working here work so hard, and it shows in the service they provide to people every day. The food is a bar above any place in the local area, sit down restaurant or neighborhood market. No matter the kind of meat you get, it's always deliciously prepared. Everything is fresh and made with love. I am going to miss this market dearly. Do not hesitate to stop by if you're in the area.
google avatar

Vamsi V.

Yelp
The taqueria is located inside the easy-to-miss grocery store on Lex. Simple, no frills setting. Tacos are fresh and super tasty.

Yelp
Wow! Been looking for a good traditional Mexican place in the UES since I moved here a few years ago... Everything around just seemed pretty mediocre and overpriced until I found this place randomly one night on a delivery app. The nachos, tacos and guac are great - it is the best guac I've had in a while. And they make it extra spicy if you ask, too! Looking forward to ordering from this place a bunch more!
google avatar

Joanne D.

Yelp
All you need Close to the train Had amazing pre made green sauce Nice staff Authentic
google avatar

Kareem A.

Yelp
Not only do they have great food and a great beer selection but my partner and I come here for everything. Fresh nopales, fruit, detergent, paper towels, chips. Their guacamole is so so good too. Some of the best I've had in NYC period. They are open late and have fair prices. It might be our favorite place in the neighborhood.
google avatar

Vivian H.

Yelp
You will find everything you need here to make an authentic Mexican dinner. Tortillas, frijoles, queso blanco, cilantro and lots and lots of Goya products. I am addicted to tamarind candy, just can't get enough it. Every time I go to a Spanish-speaking country, I stuff my luggage full of all things tamarind. But alas, I always have to refill. This place carries Pulparindo, which is a tamarind candy popular in Mexico. I bought a box of 20 pieces for $3.99. Pretty good deal and now I have plenty of tamarind to last me until my next departure!
google avatar

Marc L.

Yelp
So I decided to cook Mexican one night and I needed to find some Harina De Maiz. I went to my usual UES grocery stores expecting to find it but no one could help. Even the staff at Eli's looked at me as if I was crazy. Frustrated, I turned to Yelp for help in locating the nearest Mexican Grocery and found out that El Tepeyac was very close by. As the earlier two reviews indicate, this place is a godsend and has virtually everything you would need to create a true mexican feast. Best of all, this store is located directly outside of the 103rd Street subway stop so it couldn't be easier to reach, shop and then jump back on the 6 line. When you need Mexican Groceries, this is the place to go.

Beatriz V.

Yelp
This is my favorite neighborhood source for Mexican ingredients and semi-homemade cooking. The guacamole is unbelievably delicious as well as the Pico de Gallo. The homemade sauces are spectacular- I put them on fish, meats and poultry. The queso fresco, fruits and veggies are all so very fresh and delectable- I come here at least twice a week to keep my fridge full of fresh Mexican Heavenly Food!!! Lastly, all the personnel and the cooks are friendly and eager to give me a taste of anything I want to try for the first time. I always end up buying it!!! GRACIAS TEPEYAC!

Yelp
Didn't even get the chance to eat from here, how you don't know your menu? I placed an order of 3 carnitas tacos she's like ok... then she calls me back & says we don't sell carnita tacos... but why didn't you tell me this on the phone when I called? then I also got a guacamole & I asked how much would be everything she said she doesn't know because they weight the the guac???? What the f***???

Kymani A.

Yelp
great food the burritos were amazing and the service is great you would be dumb not to go here's when you pass by, and hungry
google avatar

t f.

Yelp
Make sure you specify you want the 2 for 1 tacos special or else you will be given and charged for a full-priced set. No bargain.

Sarah M.

Yelp
the best burrito i've ever had! i don't even know what makes it so good but it's amazing. the store owner was also very very kind.

Robert C.

Yelp
They have some of the best authentic Mexican products I have had, and I lived in Mexico for five years. The mole that I chose was outstanding, and it was one of at least three choices. The Mexican crema had the perfect consistency and taste profile. The salsa verde was also excellent. Their guacamole is already famous for the right reason - it was perfect. On a whim, I bought the alfojores which I was prepared to compare to the Argentine variety. They were very different from the Argentine style but were excellent in their own right as a wonderful shortbread cookie with authentic dulce de leche. Finally, I also go some flan for dessert expecting the typical Latin American flan, instead it is a wonderful flan cheesecake.

Yelp
So excited to find this gem on Seamless. I moved here from SF five years ago and have been very saddened by the lack of authentic Mexican food. This place is the real deal. The food is fresh, spicy and fits the bill for my Californian Mexican food cravings. Don't be put off by the fact that it's just a bodega, the food is top-notch. Will order again and highly recommend.
