Esquina Común - Review - La Condesa - Mexico City - The Infatuation

"What began as a secret dining experience in the chef’s Roma apartment has since blossomed into one of Condesa’s most exceptional and unique rooftop restaurants. Esquina Común is small, homey, and feels like you’re dining at your friend's garden—if your friend were obsessed with plants. As for the food, it’s a clever blend of Mexican, Spanish, Peruvian, and Asian-inspired flavors. On the ever-changing menu, you might find creamy hummus topped with squid chicharrón and homemade sweet potato gnocchi with kumquat—all beautifully plated. You should make a reservation well in advance since this place is so great that everyone’s trying to eat here, and they’re only open Thursday through Sunday." - Guillaume Guevara

Esquina Común

"The address may no longer be a secret, but reservations at this hot spot are closely guarded (and only available by direct messaging on Instagram). The covered rooftop setting is enhanced with bountiful greenery and a lovely, relaxed vibe.Chef Ana Dolores González and a young, talented team cook with plenty of personality and a solid foundation of strong technique and good ingredients. Styled like a tasting menu and portioned for two, these dishes are impressive. Items of note include the pescado del dia, which may be grilled cod set in a luscious green mole with crushed ripe plantain, fava beans, and pumpkin seeds. Staying on theme, the masa and plantain tamal de pescado is filled with chile red-tinted fish with a flavorful salsa macha." - Michelin Inspector

The food was very unique. The names of the dishes sounded familiar, but the combinations of flavors were pairings I never had before. They were artistically put together and a beautiful restaurant. My friend and I ordered the entire menu, which was a suggestion from our waiter. It was a couple thousand pesos. Pretty good value at a Michelin Star restaurant. My favorite dish was the beef in bacon broth and dessert.

What a blast from start to finish! We arrived during a brief downpour and while we were being escorted up the very cool stairway to the restaurant the electricity went out, but only for a minute or two. As we stepped into the dinning space the lights came back on and as my eyes adjusted I saw a member of the service team smiling at us and there wasn’t a hint of panic. She showed us to our table and the culinary tour de force began. The menu is small, so the four of us ordered two complete menus. Each dish was gorgeous. Perfect culinary delights with each course. The service was so on point, smiles were everywhere and the explanations of the dishes were so well done. I believe it is a bit tough to get a reservation, we lucked out as there was a cancellation and we were able to nab the table by going back the reservation system a few times and Viola! We were in. Do yourself a favor and go to the truly special restaurant!!

Best food I had in Mexico city hands down. Everything was perfectly served, flavor, presentation, service exceeded all expectations. We ordered everything on the menu to share, perfect amount of food for 3 people. Do yourself a favor book this place asap.

Esquina Común was a peaceful and truly exceptional dining experience. Tucked away on a rooftop that feels like a hidden treehouse, the spot was intimate and perfect for their thoughtfully crafted menu. They offer just seven dishes, and typically recommend ordering all dishes for a full tasting experience. Since I was dining solo, they were super accommodating and offered half portions of most dishes at half price. The food was full of highlights: mackerel tostada was refreshing with bright and distinctive flavors; plantain with charred shrimp and coconut with a gentle spice kick; and the soup was rich with umami. The wagyu main course offered deep, spice-forward flavors, while the rabbit sope was pleasantly gamey with interesting textural contrasts. The meal was well paced and allowed time to savor all bites and the dining ambience. Overall, this place is a wonderful gem - an intimate spot for experiencing fresh and creative flavors in a laid back setting.

Completely adorable and relaxingly casual Michelin Star eatery. The staff is very friendly, bilingual, and super helpful. The food is as outstanding as you'd expect. Great combinations of flavors without losing the comfort food vibe. You definitely need a reservation. They're handled through Open Table or calling the restaurant. Seems like they'll take reservations for about 60 days out so keep an eye on it and book yours as soon as you can.

Excellent experience. We did the tasting menu which is essentially 1 of each item on the menu. Delicious and memorable dishes, great service and a warm and inviting atmosphere. Really good value too. The best meal of our trip.

The single best meal I’ve ever had. To start there is a waiter outside a café that will ask your name for the reservation and then walk you in past a curtain in the café. Once past the curtain you’re met with a stair case that brings you up to the restaurant. It feels like you’re entering a new world. It is so beautiful, well furnished, and cozy. Once you sit down they give you a placard with a QR code for the menu on it. There are many drink options, my partner and I each got a kombucha and they were both delicious. The food menu had six dishes and one dessert and it ended up being the perfect amount for us to get one of everything including the desert. I would walk you through each dish but suffice to say each belongs in my top 20 dishes ever, and this meal was the best I’ve ever had in total. Also everything aside from the bread that came along side one of the dishes was gluten free. Along with this the waitstaff were perfect, very kind, pacing our dishes perfectly, bring the check once we asked for it, after we had some time to simmer. Thank you all so much for the most amazing culinary experience.

Yelp
I was lucky enough to snag an early dinner reservation at Esquina prior to our CDMX trip. We arrived on an uber but couldn't locate the restaurant. It turned out to be a speakeasy and the restaurant is actually located on the rooftop of a small cafe. Ambiance: island vibe. Casual and laid back fine dining. Only table seating, very limited number of tables as well. We saw mostly couples but did see a family with young kids. Service: excellent. Our waitress cleared out our plates once we were done and the next course didn't take long to arrive. She even asked us for feedback if anything needed to be improve which we did give some suggestions and she happily accepted it. When the food arrived, an explanation was always given which made the experience even more authentic. Food: 4/5. You can order ala carte or do the tasting menu. The tasting menu was recommended by our server which we went with since we got to try a bit of everything. The courses were presented as family style. My favorite was the fish tostada, smoked plantain stuffed with shrimp and the wagyu flank steak with sweet potato purée. Portion sizes were decent for the tasting menu and every course was plated beautifully. Cost: $$. This meal was very reasonable for a 1 Michelin star restaurant with a tasting menu. My husband and I both got a drink or two as well. With tips and tax included, our meal was around $175 USD for two people. Overall, a decent restaurant to try in Mexico City. The food was very unique and the atmosphere was relaxing for a fine dining restaurant.

Yelp
This charming restaurant is on the second floor of a cafe and you'll need to walk through the back of the cafe and up some winding steps to get there. The menu is pretty small and you have the option to do ala carte, but the recommended way is definitely to do the tasting of all the dishes. There's plenty of food for two to share so come hungry! Every dish was beautifully presented and was cooked with fresh ingredients and unique flavors. Service is excellent too. Definitely an experience! The restaurant is semi outdoors so consider putting on some bug spray!

Yelp
While visiting CDMX, I was lucky enough to get a lunch reservation. I walked through a curtain and up stairs to enter a cozy rooftop restaurant. I'm always on the hunt for the best food whenever I visit a new city, and this restaurant did not disappoint. First, the restaurant has a cool and comfortable atmosphere in its rooftop setting surrounded by lush greenery. We were welcomed by the friendliest staff. Our servers were so nice and explained every dish. They have a small menu, and encourage you to order the full tasting menu to get the full experience. However, you can opt to order a la carte, as well. We started with a tostada. The tostada was beautifully presented and equally delicious. I can't remember all of the ingredients, but it had a great blend of flavors. We followed the tostada with a fresh fish crudo dish. Again, beautifully presented with a wonderful citrusy freshness. Our final dish had wagyu beef and puréed sweet potato. Every dish was perfection. We could not pick a favorite because everything was incredible. I also liked that this is fine dining, but with a casual and relaxed feel. Esquina Comun was one of my favorite stops while in CDMX. A Michelin star well-earned! I hope to return and get their dinner next time.

Yelp
Outstanding food, however the level of service left a bitter taste and much to be desired. Our waitron didn't even show up at our table after our main dish arrived (after completely missing part of our order) Part of our drinks order never arrived and it was added to the bill. And the absolute low was the negligent waitron trying to justify the level of service after we waited at our table for ANY service and eventually got up to leave, while she stood around at a different table with a bottle of mezcal. Sad service to say the least.
