Sushi Aozora - Review - Gramercy - New York - The Infatuation

"Upscale sushi destination Sushi Aozora (formerly15 East) is now in its fourth iteration since 2007, with new owners and a new chef. Just east of Union Square, they’re serving a 16-course, $165 omakase that involves fish marinated in sake lees, with intermittent appetizers in place of the typical ginger palate cleanser. The restaurant seats 24, and there is a bar a la carte menu with things like a $68 mixed clam sashimi." - Bryan Kim

NYC Japanese Restaurant Fifteen East Reopens in Union Square | Eater NY

"Originally opened in 2007 in conjunction with Marco Moreira of Tocqueville, this restaurant has reopened at 15 East 15th Street at Fifth Avenue in Union Square under new partners Jay Lim and Tasuku Murakami, the latter a former head chef at Sushi Azabu in New York and the Lobster Club from Major Food Group. It’s at least the third revival of the Michelin-starred spot; it previously reopened in 2020 during the pandemic as an all-weather outside area that sat 120 people for $145 per person. The new rendition opened on Tuesday, July 22 with a $235-per-person omakase and will showcase the use of sake kasu (sake lees), which is the rice byproduct from the sake brewing process in marinading fish — a time-tested technique — and the kitchen plans experimentation beyond fish, using it with items like cheese and in the cocktail program. Two seatings can be reserved online, for 5:30 and 7:45 p.m." - Melissa McCart

We just came here for Christmas and had an amazing omakase experience. Every piece of fish was incredibly fresh, and the sushi rice was perfectly seasoned and textured. chef Ben was very friendly and engaging, which made the experience feel personal and relaxed. Service was attentive and thoughtful from start to finish. Overall, a wonderful meal — we would definitely love to come back.

Google
My top omakase experience this year and it's not even the most expensive! @sushiaozora led by Executive chef Ben Chen, who started making sushi at 16 and trained in a legacy sushi house in Hong Kong before cooking at O Ya, Sushi Ishikawa, Kiseki, and Sushi Seki. He blends Japanese precision with global inspiration, curating a 16-course (that's what it says on their website although if I can count, pretty sure we got 18!) omakase with seafood flown straight from Toyosu Market and seasonal ingredients from the Union Square Greenmarket. The hospitality, the ambience, and the attention to details makes this one of the most thoughtful, joyful, and memorable omakase experiences I've had in NYC. IG: joannekyc

The food quality met expectations, a little better than expected. The courses are in good orders to start the first bite. The location and atmosphere is excellent 10/10. Best for contents and special events or on a date. The price point is better than expected for its location and food quality. Service is 10/10. Will be back.

Google
We had an incredible experience at Fifteen Omakase. The Chef Tasuku has a background in Italy, and you can taste subtle Italian influences in a few of the dishes — a unique and delightful twist that adds depth to the traditional omakase experience. The sushi rice stood out — perfectly balanced with a slightly salty profile, rather than the more common sweet or vinegary notes. It complemented the fish beautifully. Some highlights of the meal included the lean tuna, melt-in-your-mouth scallops, and uni from Kumamoto — incredibly fresh and full of umami. Service was attentive and warm throughout, and the location is perfect for a post-meal stroll. Highly recommend if you’re looking for a thoughtful and refined omakase with a touch of creativity.

An outstanding omakase experience from start to finish. Every course was thoughtfully crafted, showcasing the freshness and quality of the ingredients. The chef’s attention to detail and balance of flavors was exceptional, and the pacing of the meal felt perfect. Intimate, refined, and truly memorable — easily one of the best omakase experiences I’ve had. Highly recommended.

Google
Celebrated my dad’s birthday here and it was a wonderful experience! Chef Ben and the rest of the team were super professional and went above and beyond to make sure we had an amazing experience. The set was priced at $165 for 16 courses with each course thoughtfully curated and fresh. Will be back!!!

Google
What an amazing omakase experience at Fifteen East! Chef Tasuku delivers absolutely unforgettable presentation and brings his expertise, experience and love for food to Every single bite. Every dish is beautifully crafted and has mesmerizing flavors. I wouldn't be able to single out my favorite piece as Every new course was versatile, delicious and called for "i want-to-be-back-to-eat-it-again" craving. The ambiance of the place is gorgeous as well, with immaculate service. This was a real treat and a celebration of taste and flavors at its essence. Thank you for the wonderful, unmatched fine dining experience.

Google
Dining at Fifteen East was a masterfully curated experience where every course reflects a deep respect for seasonality, precision, and artistry. The omakase was a symphony of the ocean’s finest — each piece of fish remarkably fresh, delicate, and balanced, allowing the purity of the ingredients to shine. Chef Tasuku Murakami’s understated elegance and quiet confidence translate into every detail — from the warm hospitality to the restrained, thoughtful presentation. There’s a sense of serenity and intention behind each course that elevates the entire evening. What’s truly remarkable is how Fifteen East delivers this level of craftsmanship at such a fair price point. It’s an experience that rivals some of New York’s most elite sushi counters, but with a far more approachable grace — making it one of the city’s best-kept secrets for serious sushi lovers.

Absolutely BEAUTIFUL space. A really cool vibe and atmosphere with an amazing menu. Chef Mura is going to absolutely CRUSH in this space with what he's bringing to the table. Can't wait to try their omakase when we come back to NY!

Yelp
A calming atmosphere fine dining experience by chef Tasuku is one of the best dining experience. The omakase portion is on point, very generous, the presentation is as nice as expected and moreover the service was excellent. Feel like pampered with luxurious for 2 hours. Definitely coming back.

Yelp
This place absolutely blew my mind. The atmosphere and the staff were so nice and welcoming, The fish were extremely fresh and tasty. They also use authentic wasabi, and their ginger was so good. I normally don't like ginger but I kept cleansing my pallet after each course. The mix of ingredients were amazing, each course was just absolutely amazing. I highly recommend Fifteenth East!
