"At Flake Bakery, a newcomer to Coolidge Corner’s excellent dining scene, owner and former Lisbon resident Cristina Quintino only does one thing, and she does it very well: Portuguese egg custard tarts, or pastéis de nata. So well, in fact, that the bakery has been selling out of tarts daily and Quintino has had to instate order limits on the weekends to make sure as many people as possible can get their hands on the creamy, decadent treat." - Erika Adams

Flake is a newer bakery specializing in Portuguese Egg Tarts, located right outside of the Coolidge Corner area. We came in and the place was kind of busy, but orders were handled quickly and efficiently. We got 4 of the egg tarts to try. The crust was flaky, and had a nice texture to it. The custard isn't what we were used to, kind of creamy and a bit soft, with a bit of cinnamon taste to it. I didn't really enjoy it, but the others I shared it with thought it was good. Overall it was a good bite, not one that I would get again but can understand the appeal of it.

I was surprised by how much the pastel de nada I had from here resembled the ones I had in Portugal. It was so flaky, creamy and not too sweet! It paired perfectly with a little sprinkle of cinnamon powder. It’s pricey for one tart but it was worth it for my craving 😌

Google
I love egg tarts, so I was excited to finally try Flake. The per-tart price goes down when you buy more, so we ended up getting 6 tarts for 4 people. They were packaged beautifully and were fresh and hot. I thought the pastry was great -- nice and crispy layers. I wasn't a fan of the filling -- it felt more like a sweet pudding and didn't have the egg flavor I was expecting. Some people may like that, but it wasn't for me.

There’s only one pastry on the menu but it’s made to perfection. Enjoy one hot and take a box to go (I ordered 7). I wanted to have an espresso but I’d already had my day’s allotment of caffeine. Pastry is flakey and crunchy and the filling is sweet but not overly. I’d say it’s sweeter than most Asian bakeries but slightly less sweet than avg american bakeries?

Google
A top-tier place for Pastel de Nata (Portuguese egg tarts). The crust is filled with butter and perfectly crispy - EVEN after a reheat (with the store-provided instructions). The fillings are creamy, though slightly sweet for my taste, but it will pair so well with afternoon tea. A bit on the pricier side given how small the cake is, but will certainly come back whenever I want to treat myself :) P/s: I do wish they would sell the puff pastry separately so that one could experiment with many different fillings at home.

Google
SUPER FLAKEY, delicious, and with a complexity of texture and flavor that is incredibly unique to this Brookline egg tart bakery. Drinks are also excellent and very well-priced. Friendly staff. Wonderful pastries in beautiful, family-friendly, Coolidge Corner. My recommendation is a dash of cinnamon on top; it will make your week!

Google
Portuguese-style egg tarts are truly the best. Since discovering this place, I've been eating one every day. If you freeze them on the day you buy them and then defrost them in the oven, they taste just as good as when they're freshly bought

Google
Portugal sweet treat haven in Coolidge Corner! Stepped in today to pick up 2 tarts, was treated with incredible energy and enthusiasm. My simple order was fulfilled with great attention to detail! The tarts themselves are fresh and wonderfully scrumptious! By no means subpar to any pastel I’ve had directly on Portuguese soil. Wishing this business maximum prosperity. The quality bar is already set high! I’m sure to head back for more of their flaky delight one of these days 🥰

Yelp
Pastel de Nata, rare to see a shop that just makes them fresh every couple of hours, mine was warm The pastry is delicious, but the custard part was a bit too sweet for my personal preference. Great pastel de natas better than some I've had in Montreal

Yelp
The Pasteis de Nata (Portugese custard tarts) here are the best that i've found in the Greater Boston area. The tarts have a nice buttery flaky crust and a silky smooth rich custard. I found that the tarts have a short shelf life though, so unless you are able to get them fresh out of the oven, it will not be as flaky. Also, the tarts can be inconsistent (e.g one tart from the same exact batch can be much more flaky and cooked than the other).

Yelp
I've been dying to try these pastries every since their opening and they did NOT disappoint. The owners make all the pasteis by hand! They are so kind and very busy! The crust is buttery and flaky and the custard is warm, eggy, and not too sweet. Everything I could ask for. When you go inside, it transports you to Lisbon. There's wall decorations reminiscent of the city! You can order in person based on how many you want or you can put in an online or preorder! I only had 2 the first time but I went back the next day for more. They also sell coffee which is the perfect pairing to the sweet desserts! I will say, it's a bit pricey as it starts at $3.50 per pastry, but cheaper if you buy in bigger quantities. However, sometimes you don't have the option to buy more if they're close to selling out! I suggest going early right once they open so you can get as many as you want. I've already been twice and I will definitely be back!

Yelp
Very simple place, come here for the pastel de nata and thats it! Does what it does SO well, very tasty and so fresh. I enjoy how you can get one singular one to try and aren't forced into multiples like most places

Yelp
Cute little pastry shop in Coolidge corner with Pastel de Nata fresh every few hours. Delicious food and fast when there is no line... ambiance is a cafe style with only 2 tables fitting 2-3 people comfortably

Lina L.

Yelp
Flake had a sign outside their door to indicate that they were only accepting walk in orders at 4pm and asked to limit people's orders to only two pieces. It seems like they are still working on a system to meet the demands as their supplies are inadequate. We walked in right on the dot, and they sold out for the day within minutes. The pastries were not that warm but super flakey and delicious after reheating at home. They were on the smaller side for the price, but if you just want to enjoy some for a quick bite, it is great. I feel like it is on the sweeter side, but still enjoyable. The store itself is on the smaller side with only limited seating, so this is better to grab on the go and enjoy at home. Service could be better but maybe they were just overwhelmed for the day. Overall, I will come back if I am craving Pastel de Nata and want to treat myself.

Yelp
I've been wanting to try these Portuguese egg tarts since they opened! I'm so glad Boston now has a bakery that specializes in Portuguese egg tarts! I came here on a weekday afternoon so there was no line and plenty of egg tarts available. You can also preorder online for pick up. The crust is so buttery and flakey like it should be and the custard was creamy and eggy! It was a little bit too sweet for me. They also have powdered sugar and cinnamon powder if you wanted to put that on top. They are a little bit pricey for the size of the tarts! It's a nice little treat if you're in the area!

Linda D.

Yelp
Stumbled upon the store front and grabbed the IG. Looked really good so had to come by when they are not sold out. The tarts are pricey for their size but taste good. The crust is flakey and the custard is totally different from other fillings in the area. They are constantly baking more, so the next batch is quick. They do let them cool before giving them to you (honestly for a good reason). Even cooled they are HOT in the middle and I would have burned my mouth if I got them fresh outta the oven. The coffee is just OK.

Yelp
Flake Bakery had their grand opening just a few weeks ago and their authentic portuguese pastéis de nata are HOT TO GO‼ They currently take orders at the register later pick up which was just enough wait time for me to grab a bite at a local cafe and return to freshly baked, warm egg custard tarts! The tarts were a perfect dessert with a crispy, flakey crust and not too sweet delectible creamy center They will soon be starting online ordering ahead but be sure to follow @flakebakeryboston for updates!

Leslie L.

Yelp
Legit pastel de nata- an eggy custard sweet treat with a caramelized top and a crispy pastry shell, from Portugal. They make them in small batches, so you might have to wait if they're in between batches. Pre-order available!

Nam N.

Yelp
Freshly baked egg tarts are delightfully warm and not overly sweet, achieving a perfect balance of flavors. We highly recommend them.

James M.

Yelp
The pastries are fantastic. Yes, they are not cheap, but I *do* believe it is worth it given the quality! You won't regret trying this place!

Cassi K.

Yelp
The pastel de nata was delicious but pretty small and pricey ($3.50 each) It was still warm and they were actively making the dough in the back too! They offer coffee drinks as well which were not bad.

Erica C.

Yelp
A small and modern Portuguese Pastel De Nata shop located on the corner of Beacon street. I love how open and inviting the bakery feels. I can see the bakers creating the tarts in front of my eyes and the smells illuminating the air. Not only do they look delicious, they also taste delicious!! The fresh, buttery, and flakey layered crust holds a sweet, delicate, and warm custard. After eating just one, I wish I had another to eat on my way home. It transported me back to the time I had a Portuguese Pastel De Nata in Macau. The tarts seem to be in high demand. They have a pre order system by the hour. I was able to place my order and pick up 30 minutes later. Well worth the experience!

Hannah T.

Yelp
This counter service pastel de nata pastry shop is a dangerous addition to the neighborhood!! It's so easy to pop in for a delicious quick sweet treat. The pastry itself is shatteringly flakey (the name suits them obviously), the custard is creamy and not too sweet. Go quickly before word gets out. I love that they basically just sell the one thing. I hope they never expand the menu.

Yelp
A small little bakery that opened up on Beacon Street right by Coolidge Corner that sells one amazing pastry. I came here on a weekend afternoon after lunch and had to wait about 10 minutes for the next batch to be completed. They don't take orders until the batch is done, so you have to hang around until it's ready. This gave me enough time to decide how many to order since there's a choice of 1, 2, 4, 6, and 12. The more you buy the cheaper each one is. I decided on the 6 pack which makes each tart $3 each. Since they were fresh out of the oven, the server told us to keep our boxes open to let the tarts cool off. There are 2 small tables to sit and enjoy a tart and a coffee while you watch them continue to make these Portuguese tarts. The crust is superb! Flakey, but not overly buttery, and the custard has layers of flavor to it. You'll get a nice soft consistency of custard that pairs perfectly with the crust. You could easily eat a few of these at once and it would be great to bring to share for any holiday party coming up. I would definitely recommend coming to try this place out!

Yelp
I was born and grew up in Portugal. These pastéis taste e x a c t l y like the better ones you'll find in Portugal. I have nothing else to add, rather than feeling very, very lucky that Flake is a couple of hundred meters away from my apartment. It's not good for my already high blood sugar, but eff it. It's worth it.

Yelp
This place is a very simple pastry and coffee shop, offering only pastel de nata (portuguese custard tarts) and a short menu of hot and iced coffee drinks. The tarts were absolutely delicious. Fresh, warm, with crispy layered pastry on the bottom, a perfectly textured custard in the center, and a burnt sugar top. The custard has a delicate vanilla and cinnamon flavor, while the top tastes like a toasted marshmallow. Its really refreshing to see a place that does just one thing, and does it perfectly. I ordered a cappuccino too, and it was solid. Honestly I'd stop in just for coffee if I were passing by. I'm really excited to have a new cafe and bakery nearby doing something different.

Yelp
Good flake in the crust. Filling is a bit too sweet for my taste. It's a small bakery that is struggling to meet demand. On walk in they only sell two per customer and have a sign that blocks the entrance. They look closed but aren't. Service isn't the best. They may be frazzled but could be better. If you're bent on trying, do the online order (wait is about two hours)

Marcio D.

Yelp
Don't bother trying to order from them on DoorDash (even for pickup - I'm outside the store's delivery radius)...apparently they're not receiving or processing orders from DoorDash (not sure about UberEats - these were the two suggested from Apple Maps upon searching). They were oblivious and not helpful - didn't even offer to let me purchase on the spot as they had limited supply. I was excited to try their pastéis de nata...but it seems they still have some kinks to work out with ordering/customer service. Maybe I'll come back another time...

Yelp
The location , I had to put my GPS on. Its a tiny location . I assume to sell 1 kind of pastry, its enough. Anyway, it's across from Trader Joe more or less. The Nata pastry was flaky and inside cream delicious! It's the best next thing one can find outside of Lisbon where there is one bakery to the next. The price is semi expensive for such a small pastry. The staff is extremely friendly, I'm glad I tried it.

Stephanie S.

Yelp
OMG! just discovered them yesterday. this is incredibly delicious. I've been to Portugal several times and loved the Pastel de Natas, and these taste even better! what a joyful discovery!

RM J.

Yelp
Awesome Authentic So happy I can get them in Boston and not just remember having them in Portugal!

Daniel P.

Yelp
Truly amazing pasteis de nata, Portuguese custard tarts! They're always coming out of the oven (at least the first 3 times we've gone). Also have Speedwell coffee, great addition to Coolidge Cirner and ho early worth the trip!

Matt T.

Yelp
Delicious pastel de nata in a clean & modern shop. Picked up a few for the fam at lunch time which we re-heated in the air fryer (per their instruction) at home after dinner and they were solid.

Kimberly I.

Yelp
I ran out and ordered half a dozen to go during my lunch break. I took a photo of the instructions how to reheat them not realizing I would be given a card with my box. Yay! They were positively delicious and brought back wonderful memories of my trip to Portugal. I'll definitely will be back!!

Michael K.

Yelp
Their pastries are perfect and the owners are super nice. When I came, the pastries were still a bit warm from the oven. The crust is sooo good and so is the custard filling. I hope they add savory pastries too!

Dee D.

Yelp
Delicious pastel de natas, just like the ones we had in Portugal. They are just amazing and I'll definitely be back for more.

Sean R.

Yelp
The pastries were so delicious and the cappuccino hit the spot. Owner was super friendly and polite. Made me feel at home. Will be back soon!

D M.

Yelp
Indistinguishable from the pasteis de nata I got in Lisbon in April. Just delicious.

Grace B.

Yelp
The pastel de nadas were so good and flakey. The crust was so flaky and the custard filling was so tasty. I also got a cappuccino and it was so good. The woman that took my order was very friendly and efficient and the woman who I think is the owner or manager was also so friendly!
