Charming outdoor shack serving up mouthwatering arepas, Cuban sandwiches, and burgers, perfect for a laid-back lunch between shopping sprees.
"For over 10 years, Frita’s has been making Cuban-style burgers (a native street food of 1930’s Cuba) inside a quirky little house in Key West’s Old Town area. The small shop’s interiors are filled with nods to Frida Kahlo — and while this isn’t a Mexican restaurant, the owners have had fun with the play on words to bring both cultures together through the space’s design (which is now a brightly colored Keys-style reproduction of the kitchen at Frida Kahlo’s Casa Azul in Mexico City). The menu includes shareable appetizers, sandwiches, and tacos, but the Frita Burger is the real reason to eat here. Choose from a spicy frita, a fish frita, a confused frita (mojo pork, Caribbean slaw, onion, crispy potatoes), or the traditional burger, among others. All are served on a freshly baked Cuban roll and can be paired with Cuban coffee, beer, sangria, or a milkshake made with local ice cream." - Allison Ramirez
"This little spot does one thing better than anyone else on the island: fritas. This Cuban version of a burger, with a patty that’s a blend of beef, pork, and chorizo, glows red with spices, and is topped with little fried potato sticks. Don’t leave without one, but know their menu is big and also has a Cuban coffee affogato and really great conch fritters served salchipapa-style with cherry peppers and slices of chorizo. There’s some seating inside the small space, but sit on the colorful patio, where there are tables good for groups and a couple roosters on crumb patrol. " - ryan pfeffer
