The Best Restaurants to Know in the Florida Keys

"For over 10 years, Frita’s has been making Cuban-style burgers (a native street food of 1930’s Cuba) inside a quirky little house in Key West’s Old Town area. The small shop’s interiors are filled with nods to Frida Kahlo — and while this isn’t a Mexican restaurant, the owners have had fun with the play on words to bring both cultures together through the space’s design (which is now a brightly colored Keys-style reproduction of the kitchen at Frida Kahlo’s Casa Azul in Mexico City). The menu includes shareable appetizers, sandwiches, and tacos, but the Frita Burger is the real reason to eat here. Choose from a spicy frita, a fish frita, a confused frita (mojo pork, Caribbean slaw, onion, crispy potatoes), or the traditional burger, among others. All are served on a freshly baked Cuban roll and can be paired with Cuban coffee, beer, sangria, or a milkshake made with local ice cream." - Allison Ramirez

The 15 Best Restaurants In Key West

"This little spot does one thing better than anyone else on the island: fritas. This Cuban version of a burger, with a patty that’s a blend of beef, pork, and chorizo, glows red with spices, and is topped with little fried potato sticks. Don’t leave without one, but know their menu is big and also has a Cuban coffee affogato and really great conch fritters served salchipapa-style with cherry peppers and slices of chorizo. There’s some seating inside the small space, but sit on the colorful patio, where there are tables good for groups and a couple roosters on crumb patrol. " - ryan pfeffer

Google
First a shoutout to my boriqua brother, Henry, who made the experience perfect! If you’re fortunate to have him as your waiter, he is very welcoming and friendly. The food… OMG! It’s off the hook (check out the pictures). I had their popular El Fuego Frita (perfect taste) and my wife had the Cuban, which was amazing. Their sangria was perfect and had mango and cinnamon (that was such a nice touch). Anyway, if you are in Key West, you must check out this little gem! You won’t regret it!

Google
Do yourself a favor and eat here! The burger was easily one of the best things we ate during our Key West stay. Totally not expecting it to be so good! We got the traditional burger and added a fried egg and manchego. Amazing. The Cuban sandwich was also excellent. Our server was also wonderful and really wanted to make sure we had a great experience. Definitely a little hole in the wall type place but do not let that deter you!

Google
Frita’s was the first place we stopped on our first day in Key West! We were starving from the plane ride and stumbled upon Frita’s. We were warmly welcomed by Henry, who made our first day/meal in Key West very special. The food is AMAZING and the atmosphere is so fun too. I highly recommend the rice and beans and the plantains. The food makes this restaurant great (our personal favorite on the island), but the staff makes it even better. We decided to go back a couple days later before the end of our trip to see Henry again and try more of the yummy food! Definitely give Frita’s a visit. 5 stars all around.

Google
Been in Key West for 3 days. Best meal I’ve had yet. It’s a small family owned hidden gem. Everyone is incredibly bright and friendly and the food is unique and amazing. Told them I’d be back tomorrow for lunch!

Google
Dropped in to try the original Fritz burger recommended by a friend. This is essentially a food truck with a cute courtyard to sit in. Every table had an umbrella and there were numerous fans to cool the area. There is table service and we had an attentive server. The Fritz burger is a blend of 3 ground meats with an interesting texture. While I liked the burger I think I would try something different next time.

Google
We were looking for some cuban food and found Frita's right down the street. Frita's is absolutely amazing, from the atmosphere, the service, to the amazing food! Henry is an amazing young man. So thankful, kind and courteous. Everyone working at Frita's was so very humble. Having Henry as your server makes the experience at Frita's that much better. The food was out of this world. The flavors were bursting your taste buds, and exploding with every bite. Each day we stopped we tried something new and it never disappointed. Each menu item just kept getting better. The original Frita Burger with egg is a go to choice, the Arepas are out of this world, the beans and rice with plantains is so on point that you will crave this everyday. Birro Tacos were the best we have ever had. The consume had our tastes bud explode with joy. The tamales were so flavorful it is hard to describe. The masa was seasoned perfectly, then one order we added pork and that was next level. The pork was so tender, juicy and succulent. The flan was a subtle sweet treat. Such depth of flavor in each bite. This is Key West's best place for Cuban food. Highly recommended to stop in and enjoy not only the food, but the staff and atmosphere!

Google
I visited this Cuban place in Key West, with my husband, and we had such a great experience. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming. My husband ordered the Chicken Milanesa Frita, and I had the El Fuego Frita. It was our first time trying Cuban food, and we absolutely loved it! We weren’t sure what to drink, so they recommended their homemade lemonade—and it was delicious! To our surprise, they didn’t even charge us for the drink, which was such a kind gesture. The staff was incredibly friendly. We also noticed their desserts and ice creams looked amazing—definitely something we’ll try next time. We’re already looking forward to coming back on our next trip to Key West!

Google
Amazing and authentic food. Our server was great and came back multiple times during our week vacation. The empanadas, conch fritters, Cuban egg rolls, mangonada are top tier and our course the Cuban sandwich is a must get. For anyone visiting Key West this is a must visit spot for good food, I personally will be returning on our next vacation

Yelp
Frita's is the most eclectic, quirky eating experience in Key West, and we absolutely loved it. It was all outdoor seating, on benches, with cigar box paper towel holders, on uneven ground, with eclectic decorations like a Frida Kahlo picture to a superman mannequin in a phone booth. The more you look, the more quirky things you find. This is 100% my and my wife's style of place to eat. You can feel the hustle of grass roots capitalism as it's core. Now it gets better. The food. I ordered Plantanos Maduros (or sweet plantains) and French fries to go with my Cuban burger. My wife shared these items and also ordered Conch Fritters. Let's say we got all the fried food groups : ) The fries were thin and crispy and delicious. The plantains were perfectly fried and it was quite a large serving for the price. The Cuban burger lived up to it's billing, with an interesting patty made of pork and beef and nice seasonings. From the outside this place is easy to pass by, as it looks like a handful of bench tables under umbrellas. Don't pass by. Stop and Enjoy. There are dozens of more commercial restaurants you can try on your visit to KW, but Frita's stands out as a true islander experience.

Yelp
We loved this little hole in the wall. Such a fun vibe. And so hard to decide what to get, too many tasty items on the menu. We went with the classic Cuban sandwich, some elote to start and a couple vegan avocado tacos. Wasted it all down with some sweet aquas frescas. Staff was kind and loved the decor in the courtyard area.
google avatar

Ellie N.

Yelp
Cute tiny place selling burgers, empenadas and some other Cuban dishes. The food is good overall. The portion is tiny, but the prices are very good for this touristic area. You won't find anything more economical than this place on this prime street of key west.
google avatar

Teresa B.

Yelp
Phenomenal food and excellent service! I ordered the Cuban Pork Tacos and my sis ordered the Yuca fries and Cuban Sandwich. We ended up splitting both and they were equally amazing! Definitely will visit this place next time I am in KW!

Dylan D.

Yelp
BEST TACO I HAVE EVER HAD! This place is awesome. Little hole in the wall, Cuban spot with amazing food. The Cuban pork tacos were the best tacos ever... and i've had a lot of tacos in my time. They were the perfect combination of salty and a touch of sweet. If we would have found this place earlier in our trip, we would have came every day! The Sweet Plantains were also delicious! And my Wife loved her Avocado tacos. Good service, nice staff! An absolute MUST try for a casual bite to eat.

Alyana S.

Yelp
We came here for lunch after a long day of walking around Key West. The seating is outdoors only and it's quite hidden to find this place. Otherwise the service was great and quick. It did take them a while to make the food since everything is made fresh. I got the chicken tacos and the aioli sauce in it was my favorite flavoring they put in it. I highly recommend if you want homemade food!
google avatar

Kit G.

Yelp
Food and service is exceptional. Menu items that look standard are not. Rice and beans unlike any other you will ever find anywhere. White Cuban is to die for. Cuban coffee great. Sangria the best ever. A variety of unique Cuban burgers. Lots of vegetarian choices. And yes to the fish or pork tacos. Henry the waiter will take care of you. His sister cooks and Marcia the owner is the bestest. Just don't try to pet the dog sleeping in the chair out front. Live music for Sunday brunch. Prices are darn amazing for key west

Yelp
This is a little hole in the wall spot right around Duval street. There's a small outdoor food area with some seating and shade. The food: The chicken and rice with added grilled chicken and an egg 10/10 LOTS OF FOOD The Frita burger 9/10 The Birria taco 10/10 The guac and chips 8/10 The service is a bit slow but TOTALLY worth it! There's one lady in the back cooking everything from stretch so it's understandable It's a chill spot very casual ambiance.
google avatar

Devon M.

Yelp
This is a true gem on the island. My girlfriend and brother asked for a place to eat and I chose Frita's since Cuban food sounded great. We did not leave disappointed. We started with chips and guac and the guac was amazing! They put salsa verde in it which is a great addition. I ordered the original Frita which is a Cuban burger. I kid you not, I would fly back to Key West just for this burger. It was legitimately phenomenal. It was a mix of beef and pork and had a traditional tomato based sauce on it. You just have to try it to understand. My girlfriend ordered the rice and beans bowl with chicken. It was legit the best rice and beans bowl I've had. The plantains were amazing. The sauce they put on the bowl was amazing. My brother ordered the birria tacos and they were probably second best I've ever had. If you like birria, you'll like them. The service was very much on island time. It's more of a "it happens when it happens" kind of place. But it didn't take all that long so I can't really knock it much. There is one lady who cooks everything outside on the griddle. She put in the work and it showed. The ambiance is small hole in the wall spot. It looks very unassuming from the outside. But they have a little outdoor seating area. Be warned that chickens and roosters do roam around the island so they might roam near your table. They're harmless though. The tables had plenty of shade and it was a low key vibe. Highly recommend eating here if you want Cuban food in Key West. It will not disappoint.

Yelp
Frita's slapsssss. Highly recommended. Great Vibes very nice people. Fantastic food. We were in key west over Memorial Day weekend and boy was it WARM. We rode our bikes and placed an order at frita's. Had a cafecito while waiting for the food. The patio is very nice and shaded with fans. Food was so good. Salad was refreshing with ripe fruit. Frita burger had lots of flavor. Do wish the white Cuban had more sauce. That's my only critique. Would absolutely order again when in town.
google avatar

Tracey G.

Yelp
The food, the service the ambiance is all amazing. Location is good also. Its an easy walk to it.
google avatar

Greg B.

Yelp
Well priced for the area. Had a burger and Cubano sandwich both excellent. A place to sit and enjoy your food without going to Cuba.
google avatar

Jennifer L.

Yelp
The place had a lot of quirks and charms and we sat down in their patio. Food was so good and definitely recommend this as a spot to try Cuban food. We got the original frita, confused frita, beef and chicken empanadas, birria tacos, plantains, and rice and beans. Everything was incredible and the server was really nice.
google avatar

Garrett B.

Yelp
The BEST CUBAN IN KEY WEST. Don't let other reviews lead you astray, this is the best Cuban in key west. So cheesy, the ham and pork is perfectly cooked. This place only has outside seating and doesn't have table service, but if you're looking for pure Cuban sandwich food, this plan is the best. There is art on the outside seating to set the vibe. This place dwarves the awards that come with best Cuban sandwich. Don't go anywhere else for a Cuban sandwich.
google avatar

Jane R.

Yelp
The service is superb, interesting, innovative Cuban slant with homage attention to detail

Robert T.

Yelp
The fritas were very good, not as good a El Mago De Las Fritas in Miami. The fries were terrible because it looked like they haven't changed their oil in months. The seating is less than desirable; if you are taller than 5 feet, there is no place for your knees. They need to spruce things up a bit to warrant the price for the fritas. The empanadas were greasy.
google avatar

Philip W.

Yelp
We are in Key West for the 5th year in a row. we are always looking for that hidden gem. Some friends said to try Frita's as we would not be disappointed and we weren't. This is a small hole in the wall lunch and dinner restaurant open Tuesday thru Saturday. The food was delicious and affordable. Service was friendly and prompt. Ambiance was decorated in a Cuban accent that coincide with the name and food menu.
google avatar

Moni K.

Yelp
Amazing authentic Cuban Food. A must try in the Key West! They have an assortment of drinks including Cuban coffee and bottled water only. We started of with a shareable of tostones, yuca fries, and sweet plantain with three different sauces. It was all very very good. Next I decided to try the fish fritas which is made with yellow tail snapper, Carribean slaw, melted cheese, Pickle onion, crispy fried julienne potatoes on freshly baked Cuban bread roll. Absolutely wonderful, tart and sweet flavors balanced, fish was delicately fried. Service was attentive and friendly. I highly recommend.
google avatar

Mark L.

Yelp
Funky place (literally). Already contacted the health department about the rancid flavored chick and rice and a few other issues with the silverware. My partner ordered the flan (mid rate). I should have gone to El Siboney
google avatar

Christy M.

Yelp
A fun little outdoor spot. Eclectic decor brings you back to a different time. Cuban beers, Cubano sandwich, and the Frita Burger. Frita burger is made with a combo Beef, Pork and Chrorizo and topped with Manchego cheese for a delish combo. Cubano was really good too! My fav was the iced Cuban Coffee with teddy bear ice
google avatar

Maria N.

Yelp
The rice and beans with grilled chicken - so good! Well worth the price. I would recommend! Only negative was that the chicken was really dry, so it needed more salsa. Other than that it is a solid choice.
google avatar

Monica G.

Yelp
Hands down the BEST Cuban food! We went back several times & each time we got the Cuban sandwich, Birria & pork tacos. They were too good to change it up. Mojitos were delicious. Service was amazing they are the sweetest people. Just go! You will not be disappointed
google avatar

Alison T.

Yelp
A hole in the wall type restaurant. The food was very good, the service was excellent, and the prices were reasonable (which is hard to find in key west!). I would definitely come back.
google avatar

Marissa N.

Yelp
We visited on St Patrick's day. They had a special corned beef empanada which we tried, it was well done but passable for their other menu items. The Cafe con Leche martini was super good. Elote was suspiciously delicious when corn isn't even in season. Veg taco also delicious, the pickled pepper added a great zing Frita bello was the favorite of the table. The texture, variety of toppings and taste were lovingly cushioned by the Cuban bread. Fish fritta was good, fellow diner found it a but fishy. Rice n beans were super good, love the sweet plantain on top. Some turd stuck gum under the table which got on my dress and the staff were appropriately remorseful offering me anything they had to help get it off. ICE CUBES worked None of my pictures turned out well.
google avatar

Gabe S.

Yelp
The food was delicious and the ambience was nice. The service was good as well. I would definitely come back.

Cordie B.

Yelp
Passed by and the menu looked so good we had to stop. I got the Rasta Wrap which was sweet and savory with a delicious sauce. It was SO good. Definitely recommend! A+

Paul F.

Yelp
Food was good. But Ordered a draft beer and was served a different brand. When we said the beer tasted bad, they said it wasn't the brand we ordered but another beer. Just blew off the fact that what was on the menu and ordered wasn't served. I guess they figure they can put whatever on the menu and serve it and most won't notice. Anyway, in my opinion, a low character place in regards to serving what's on the menu and ordered.

Kelly S.

Yelp
Super delicious! Great conch fritters and the "fritas" are amazing. We had a great lunch!

Anonymous F.

Yelp
Great food-the wrap, burger and pork tacos were amazing. Key lime pie was average. But an overall delicious meal with great live guitarists.

Nancee B.

Yelp
Garbage. Absolutely horrendous service and food. The waitress couldnt be bothered to remember my sons food, then seem inconvenienced when asked about it when my husbands food was brought out as he my son was falling asleep, 50 mins after the order was placed. She slugged out with a burger he didnt want and the the milkshake tasted rancid. Avoid this place. Go to wendys.
google avatar

Jesika D.

Yelp
Best Cuban sandwich I've ever had. They cook it right there in site in a little food truck. I live in Illinois and I have been dreaming of this sandwich since I've been home! Don't skip this place! You will regret it! Seriously the best I've ever had!
google avatar

Monica K.

Yelp
I was on a mission to get great Cuban food and Frita's hit the spot! There were so many things on the menu that I wanted, it was hard to choose. I landed on the Cuban pork tacos and the sampler plate. The tacos were juicy and flavorful... I could have eaten like four of them... If i didn't also need to get the sampler. The sampler had tostones, sweet plantains and yuca & three sauces including mojo, garlic cilantro oil and guava dip. Everything was very good with the tostones being my favorite; they were so crispy and delicious. I dipped them in both the mojo and garlic cilantro oil. A friend of mine absolutely loved the sweet plantains and ate most of those; sharing is caring :) . The bathroom was clean and eclectically decorated. If you're in Key West and want some bomb-ass food (yeah, I just said that), treat yourself to Frita's!
google avatar

Tom P.

Yelp
Shouldn't miss this place. Have the Frita burger. Possibly the best burger in paradise

Michael M.

Yelp
My girlfriend and I were watching live music at The Green Parrot just down the block from Frita's. We ordered carry-out and I mentioned when picking it up that we had some outside chairs at the Parrot and were looking forward to snacking with the music. After I got back to the Parrot and we dug into our delicious "Cuban Cigars" we noticed we'd only received 1 of the 2 fries we'd ordered. We were so enjoying the set at the Parrot by that point, that we were totally caught off guard when Frita (?) showed up with the missing fries. She found us seated outside the window, apologized, and then headed out into the pouring rain before we could say "thanks". So, we're saying thanks here. Lovely example of Key West nice and the Frita's customer service vibe.

Dee M.

Yelp
I thought I posted this review, as I wrote it years ago, but just found it in my drafts. Very good cuban sandwich with a different take on the classic swiss cheese. Very good bread and excellent pork with some crispness for texture. A little bit of a wait but the food was worth it. Tostones were classic Cuban style and delicious!

Julie A.

Yelp
Delicious food! I read the reviews and was looking for something to appeal to me and my spouse where we could eat outside. We found a parking place on the street in the shade so left the dogs in the car even though they were allowed. But they would have disrupted the resident chickens. I drove past the outside twice before I noticed the building. Options both for takeout or sit at one of about 8 tables. I planned to have the fish tacos, my go to order, but then decided to try the Fish Frita sandwich. My husband had the Cuban sandwich and it looked good too. Had to try the key lime pie which had 2" meringue on top of a small individual pie with graham cracker crust. Next time in the keys, I'll try the tacos.
google avatar

Kristin K.

Yelp
It's a hole in the wall. I was about to step back... but my husband wanted us to stay. The carnitas tacos are delish! The burger is ok, not the best in town. Sangria ok
google avatar

Joshua J.

Yelp
Delicious food. Also tried Cuban sandwich. Never had a bad experience. Awesome customer service. A must visit while in Key west on Duval street.
google avatar

Cassie M.

Yelp
Reallllllllllly good food. Loved the atmosphere!! Great time of year to enjoy the outdoors without getting too hot too. We went in January. Servers were friendly and the main cook was super sweet. Take a chance and go here!! Delicious.
google avatar

Troy P.

Yelp
One of my favorite hole in the walls for great Cuban cuisine and Key West. Great service and great flavors.
google avatar

Stacy J.

Yelp
Cuban was awesome! I was staying at a place and wanted a quick bite. This place was walking distance. I ordered a Cuban and iced Cuban coffee. It was a walk up counter to order. They did have seating, but I ordered and went back to my place. They also offered fresh squeezed lemonade; which I wish I would have gotten over the coffee. It wasn't bad, just not as good as I'd hoped. The frozen little coffee bear floater was really cute though! The sandwich was excellent. Good flavors, hot and fresh, and a good size; for the cost. Honestly- I feel like this was a fair price for key west! We did get a Cuban somewhere else while visiting, and it was not as good as this one! Service was good. Friendly and fast!

Julie J.

Yelp
We loved our meal!! We all got cuban sandwiches and they were wonderful and warm. The young man that waited on us made us feel like family. It's a funky little place, outdoor eating, reminds me of why I love Key West. I will definitely return!!! They also have some delicious pastries. Yum!!

Cody F.

Yelp
Yummy food, friendly service, and innovative menu. I highly recommend the mango nachos for dessert!
google avatar

PJ C.

Yelp
We were looking for something different and saw the great reviews of this tiny place just off of Duval Street. Everyone here was super friendly and asking how everything was - it was very good! We grabbed one of the tables on their small patio. I got a beer and then order the traditional frita with manchego cheese which I had never ate before. It was quite good and the role was very fresh. The combo of beef, pork and chorizo was different and I liked it. My wife got the beans and rice plate and thought it was nice. Prices were reasonable. Recommended!
google avatar

Nick D.

Yelp
Wow - great little place! Amazing food and value. Super great folks. Will be back on our next trip.
google avatar

Anthony V.

Yelp
Food was great. Service was great! We had the Frida Confundida w/ Yuka fries, Pulled Pork w/ rice and black beans w/ green salsa, Elote, and churros. Definitely will be coming back.
google avatar

Jacqueline I.

Yelp
I visited here while vacationing in the Keys and haven't stopped thinking about the Cuban sandwich since! The food was all delicious, hot, and made to order. I definitely recommend ordering the sangria as well, it was one of the best I've had! The workers and either manager or owner were very kind and accommodating. It was well worth a visit!
google avatar

William S.

Yelp
My son and I stopped in for lunch after a cigar factory tour. The staff were all pleasant and the food was delicious
google avatar

Sydney T.

Yelp
This place is delicious! I ordered the steak sandwich ($14.95) and the sweet plantains with guava sauce ($4.something). The sandwich was flavorful and a decent size. The plantains were fresh and hot! Loved my meal. The food is made fresh to order so they come out in various intervals, but the wait is worth it. Prepare yourself, the bathroom is an adventure.
