Nestled in a cozy strip mall, Gold Tooth Tony’s Detroit Pizza in the Heights dishes up crispy, savory pies that leave pizza lovers craving more.
"In a city where Neapolitan and New York-style slices run the pizza game, we’re especially thankful for Gold Tooth Tony’s, the Heights pizza joint turning out some brilliant and hefty Detroit-style pizza. Each slice, made of fluffy buttered dough and smothered in glistening cheese with edges crisper than a fresh line-up—could easily be a meal on their own. There are classic options like cheese and margarita pizza, but we like to get the more decadent varieties, like “The Griz,” that tastes like a buffalo-chicken-bacon explosion. And with some of the crispiest wings on the northside of Houston, we’re convinced that everything coming out of this small-but-mighty counter service joint is flawless. We’d camp out for one of the few tables inside, or stand outside and eat under the neon glow of the restaurant. " - gianni greene, chelsea thomas
"Pizza genius Anthony Callelo has been cooking up Detroit-style pizzas at Rudyard’s for years, but now Houstonians can get a variety of his creations daily at his Heights, Montrose, and Bellaire outposts. Sink your teeth into the thick dough that’s a delightful cross between focaccia and sourdough, and revel in the different toppings and combinations. The 181 Heights — an ode to the now-shuttered Pi — is loaded with arugula pesto, almond, chili flake, lemon zest, and fennel pollen, while the Sebastian’s Big Idea is a cheesy and fun combination of Spam, togarashi roasted pineapple, and furikake seasoning. You can’t go wrong with a more classic pie like the pepperoni. Be sure to try some of its “not pizza” items like its pizza tots or its General Tso’s chicken wings with a side of spicy ranch." - Brittany Britto Garley, Kayla Stewart
"HOUSTON Gold Tooth Tony’s in Houston is turning out some excellent Detroit-style pizza without forgetting to have a little fun. The compact, counter-service joint is dishing out heavy-hitter pies. Each slice, made of fluffy, buttered dough smothered in glistening cheese with edges crisper than a fresh line-up, could easily be a meal on their own. There are classic options like cheese and margherita, but we like to get the more over-the-top varieties, like The Griz, which is more like a buffalo-chicken-bacon explosion. Or pies composed of unlikely teammates like pancetta, hot honey, and fig. But if you’d rather let your inner mad pizza scientist loose, there’s an option to build your own pie." - team infatuation

Everything at Gold Tooth Tony’s feels lighthearted and not just because the name sounds like a place to get custom grillz. The inside is bright, with colorful signs adding a bit of neon sunshine. Soak up as much of the fun as possible while you wait because there are only about four tables and a few single stools along the window, so most people come here on a mission for takeout. But if you’re lucky you can snag a spot and take a few bites of one of the decked-out slices in the restaurant. Gold Tooth Tony’s keeps things exciting—the most inventive pies become the ordering go-tos. And while there may be a little bit of a wait on the weekends to get your order, this place makes for a great weeknight meal or takeout order. Even if there’s no room inside of the restaurant, we’d happily camp out for one of the few tables inside, or stand outside and eat under the neon glow of the restaurant. " - Gianni Greene
"Pizza and wings often go hand in hand, and Anthony Calleo makes sure it’s an option at his Detroit-style pizza joint. Enjoy saucy wings coming in flavors like classic buffalo, garlic parmesan, NS General Tso’s, or opt for the dry-spiced wings that are best dunked in Ranch or blue cheese dressing." - Brittany Britto Garley, Megha McSwain
