Upbeat joint dishing up classic fish-&-chips & other snacks in snug surrounds with a terrace.
"The Golden Chippy serves fish cloaked with brittle, greaseless batter that tastes fresh rather than being masked by day-old oil or by being overzealous with the salt and vinegar. All of the classics are available, including somewhat less common skate and halibut. Queues often snake out the door of the Greenwich chippy on the weekend, and while you could eat in at one of the few tables in the basic restaurant area, we prefer ordering to take away. Just be prepared to swat away seagulls." - jake missing, rianne shlebak, sinead cranna, heidi lauth beasley
"Run by a Turkish-Cypriot family, The Golden Chippy is a fish and chip shop that serves fish cloaked with brittle, greaseless batter that actually tastes fresh rather than being masked by day-old oil or by being overzealous with the salt and vinegar. All of the classics are available, including somewhat less common skate and halibut, and there’s also an option for the fish to be grilled instead of fried. "It’s a small quirk of London that nearly every major chippy — Toff’s, Fish Central, Golden Hind, Brockley’s Rock — is run by Greek-Cypriots. The reasons for this are unclear, although it doesn’t take a detective to work out that a group of people, who could batter seafood before they could speak, came over to the UK and quickly saw an easy way to assimilate into the culture The Golden Chippy massively breaks this strong tradition: it is ... Turkish-Cypriot. Despite being voted #1 on Tripadvisor in the days when this meant slightly more than nothing, the fish and chips themselves are great, if sometimes needing more heavy handed seasoning. Oddly, the banana fritters impress the most. Here they arrive like yogurtlu adana in their ovular tray, logs of carefully battered banana, not a trace of grease in sight, cheap whipped cream as yoghurt, cinnamon standing in for chilli flakes and a drizzling of caramel. The crunch of the well-seasoned batter yields to perfectly molten banana, the richness of the caramel is cut through by the sandy warmth of the cinnamon. There is a sprig of mint to signal it was made by someone who cares. In short: a minor miracle." - Jonathan Nunn
"Once upon a time, The Golden Chippy was voted best restaurant in London by TripAdvisor users. It’s perhaps surprising then that the family-run restaurant chip shop offers excellent food. Classic, deeply comforting fish and chip shop staples are served, all well-prepared and treated with care, and all fish is also available grilled, if that’s someone’s thing. Although the restaurant’s sit-in section has been closed, The Golden Chippy has remained open for takeaway during the various states of lockdown (while following social distancing guidelines and limiting customers allowed in the shop), but it’s also launched a local delivery option worth taking advantage of." - Jonathan Hatchman
