Grubhub’s ‘Free Lunch’ Promo in NYC Went Predictably Haywire | Eater

"A same-day lunchtime promotion offered a $15 discount with the promo code “FREELUNCH” for orders placed between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., though customers remained liable for any applicable taxes, fees, and optional tips. The rollout was chaotic: the app and website began crashing within minutes, payments were rejected, error messages proliferated, and many restaurants closed orders as demand spiked, with redemptions reported at six times a similar 2021 promotion and peaks of about six thousand orders per minute. Restaurants struggled with piled-up orders awaiting couriers and some owners said they were not fully notified in advance despite the company’s claim of outreach; frustrated users took to social media while the service issued perfunctory acknowledgments and reminders to place last-minute orders. Observers placed the fiasco in a broader context of delivery platforms using aggressive promotions to regain business amid falling demand and profitability challenges, noting that glitchy, last-minute discounts risk damaging relationships with restaurant partners even as the lure of “free lunch” draws heavy consumer interest." - Bettina Makalintal

The Convenience of Delivery Apps Is Ruining Restaurants | Eater

"A dominant third-party delivery platform criticized for charging restaurants punitive commission rates—often 20–30% per order—and using aggressive sales tactics to secure sign-ups. Practices attributed to it and similar companies include listing restaurants without consent, deferring rather than waiving fees during crises, and emphasizing consumer convenience via promotions while squeezing restaurant margins and reducing transparency around courier compensation." - Deepti Sharma

Grubhub’s New Strategy Is to Offer Deliveries Without Restaurants’ Permission | Eater

"The company has been accused of several controversial practices: a class-action suit alleges it charged restaurants for calls routed through proxy phone numbers, and reporting revealed it purchased restaurant web domains without consent. Facing a 43% stock drop and heightened competition, leadership has defended listing restaurants without formal partnerships as a cheap, rapid way to expand inventory and retain diners, while admitting the “non-partnered” model produces a poor experience for diners, drivers and restaurants. Executives say listings can be removed on request and that a sales team will try to convert unlisted businesses to partners, arguing the tactic follows industry trends and helps restaurants gain orders despite stakeholder backlash." - Jaya Saxena

When they send you emails regarding certain promotions, they try to scam you into spending more than you think. I got a promotion for 40% off, and it was a promotion that was supposed to automatically be deducted at checkout but it wasn't. In the email, only the fine print at the bottom of the email said that it was for delivery orders only, in which the delivery fees cancel out the promotion you're receiving. When I asked about it, the customer service rep took 40 minutes just to tell me they couldn't do anything about it, and they were glad they could help me. They didn't help me with anything, because they are scammers. I'm not using them ever again. They don't care about the customer, all they care about is taking your money without you knowing it.

I had an issue with a delivery in Nashville TN due to grub hubs lack of communication. The only reason I tried this again is I had a 10% coupon. Tonight It was delivery 7:55-8:20…. As soon as the order was finalized it’s delivery at 8:30-845 which is too late now. I’ll just have to save it into the fridge. The moral…. I will never, ever is grub hub for anything as long as I live…

Grubhub has certain amount of times you can complained about the driver and food. Than they flag you for any other complaint and if you need a refund for the mistakes the restaurant makes they will not refund you your money.

To be completely honest, I used to LOVE Grubhub. I used it about 3-4 times per week! But lately I haven’t really been having a great experience with them. Poor mannered drivers, I correct orders, and worst of all, a $10 mandatory delivery charge!! I mean it’s completely outrageous that I have to pay $15 for a $5 sandwich. I’ve found myself only ordering from there maybe once-a-month if that now. The only thing that has kept its value is the friendly customer service.

The mobile app is totally not worth buying from. My brother and I ordered yesterday from one restaurant and didn't recieve our full other. When we called customer ervive the delivery driver lied about the missing item. So my brother was only refund ed the missing item. And a coupon for the rest. We then tried another restaurant and the coupon was unusable due to a order minimum requirement. Untruthful delivery drivers, the app has errors or the service and the customer service is not so helpful. Food was cold the first time, and cold and dry the second time. Not worth using the app.

Rip off. They don’t bring your food and refuse to refund. Needed to go through the credit card.

I wanted to order food today and I’ve ordered from grub hub before. I got home from work, picked out what I wanted and it was too much hassle . I wanted to get in w google , then they start asking so many questions. I gave my email address , that wasn’t good enough . NO MORE ! I ended up cooking and saving myself $60 . The purpose of the site ( I thought) was to make life easier I understand it’s probably a security thing and I appreciate that but was wondering if there’s a number to call so you don’t have to put your card info online . Yes I’m old, lol
