16 Essential Japanese Restaurants in New Orleans | Eater New Orleans

"Raw fish isn’t on the menu at this yakiniku (grilled meat) restaurant that specializes in DIY grilled marinated meats, seafood and veggies. Despite more than 700 locations worldwide, Gyu-Kaku doesn’t feel like a chain. Servers are close by as guests have fun DIY grilling over a built in charcoal grill at the table. Choose from marinated short ribs, steak, chicken, pork belly and sausages, which come with rice and veggies. Non-grill options like Japanese-style fried chicken and shiso ramen are equally appealing." - Beth D’Addono

My friend and I went to dinner last night and it was great. We got the bbq for 2 and the food had great taste. The service was amazing. My only complaint is that the portions are small

I had the chance to dine at Gyu-Kaku Japanese BBQ in New Orleans, and it was a great experience overall. I ordered their ramen, and it was absolutely delicious — rich broth, perfectly cooked noodles, and packed with flavor. The atmosphere is cozy and perfect for a relaxed meal, whether you're with friends or dining solo. The staff were friendly, attentive, and made the experience even better with their accommodating service. The only downside is the limited parking, which can be a bit of a hassle. However, if you're staying at a nearby hotel, it's just a short walk away — definitely worth the effort for a great Japanese meal. Highly recommend if you're craving something warm, savory, and satisfying in the heart of New Orleans.

TRY THE MANGO TANGO. Our first drink of it was great, barely could taste the liquor. Second round was still good but not as much. Food was good, staff was helpful, and they have set options for big groups

We were there for thanksgiving. We went to this chain in Tokyo. It is very similar!!! The service was great, we had the meat combo but next time we will order by plate. If you order by plate you can choose just the meat you like. It is not cheap but it is a nice experience. My husband had tap Japanese beer and it was just perfect, very cold.

Google
Man, did we eat a LOT when we were here. We were rolling out of there because we were so bloated! But it was because of the excellent amount and flavor of food that we ate. So much meat, I lost count of my calories. Excellent hot sake as well. Happy hour until 6pm. A little mishap, but the beers were not charged properly for the happy hour, but it was by $2 so no worries, it happens, I honestly am too introverted to bring these things up to waiters, although I should. My girlfriend should be the one to speak up (just like her mom does). But yeah, if you are a meat lover, literally get the meat lovers option for your meat. Meat meat meat. Hell yeah, happy new year.

Google
This place is a great stop if you're looking to have a true experience on your date. While the service could have been a bit more attentive, the waiter was very polite and helpful when at the table. I personally found the edamame to be a little under seasoned, but overall the food was great! We really enjoyed the steak and basil chicken. There were one or two pork items that we didn't care for. The biggest downside to our visit was that we didn't receive any rice at our table until after we had already finished cooking all of our protein on the grill. This hampered the experience and left us not full when we left That said, the desserts were just next level. The molten lava cake, the red-bean paste filled fish, and the ice cream they served with both were just incredible. The dessert alone is worth for us to make another trip to this establishment! This was our first experience at this location and we absolutely plan to go back! We plan to order more beef and shrimp, but less pork for the grill. I hope all of the photos of their menu help everyone. Gyu-Kaku Japanese BBQ is absolutely worth a visit if you're visiting Nola and you're looking for something other than only Cajun food during your visit.

Yelp
My husband and I were happy to find Gyu-Kaku Japanese BBQ on our trip to NOLA. We chose the Meat Lovers meal as we had never been there before and didn't know which meats we would enjoy. We also upgraded the premium sirloin for the prime kalbi which was a fantastic choice as the kalbi was DELICIOUS!! For the breakdown of the Meat Lovers meal, please see the attached & labeled menu picture where the meal is circled. Don't let the small portions of each dish deceive you, there is a lot of food. My favorites were the Umakara Ribeye and the Prime Kalbi. My husband liked the Bistro Hanger Steak and Prime Kalbi best. But all of the meats were yummy in their own way. The meal comes with a large salad, edamame, steamed rice, Gyu sushi (rice with a thin strip of beef on top), and Japanese chicken karaage. To complete the meal, the waiter brought out marshmallows, Hershey's chocolate, and Graham crackers for us to make s'mores. Our waiter was very attentive and all of the staff was observant of the needs of the patrons and would walk by and clear dirty dishes off of tables - even if they weren't the waiter of the table. Superb service and very much appreciated!! This is a threat place for singles, couples, and families alike.

Yelp
We went here in a Saturday for dinner. We had reservations and were quickly and nicely greeted and seated. Upon being seated, the area we were seated in towards the very back of the restaurant was a booth but only one side was able to be sat in due to a leak, which appeared to a condensation drip from the AC unit. When asked if there was any other table for us to sit at, we were quickly told that they had other reservations and couldn't move us. This was not satisfactory to me or pleasing at all considering there were clearly open tables, one in front of us and one in the back. About 30 minutes or so later, a group was seated in the next booth over. They were a larger group, however it was clear that they were friends or family if the owner/manager. We ordered the Meat Lovers Dinner for two. I had a class of wine, my boyfriend had a hot cup of green tea. We also ordered a side of vegetables. Initially the food was coming out quickly, however the grill was not cooking quickly or evenly. It was a bit low and barely hot. We had a small foil container of corn that could never seem to get hot. A lady who consistently checked on us addressed the grill issue about 30 minutes after we had received our meal and it was much better. A server wasn't very attentive and didn't check in as frequently as I thought he should have. There was little to know drink refills. I was ok with one glass of wine, but had he been attentive and asked if I wanted another. I likely would have said yes. The food was ok. Miso soup was good, edamame is edamame and the sushi pieces were good. The multiple types and flavors of beef were ok. There was one in particular that was seasoned/marinated to perfection but I can't remember which one it was. I'm open to giving it another try to see if I have a different experience. It's a unique concept! The s'mores dessert was also a nice touch.

Yelp
Food Service Ambiance Value This is a novelty place that you try once. If want to pay top dollar to grill your own food this is the place! First time and last time. And you get to grill s'mores for dessert. Better off going to a Japanese Hibachi place!

Yelp
We were so excited to try this Japanese style BBQ, but unfortunately, it was a disaster. They were out of everything and when I say everything I am saying it symbolically. Avocado, no sir we are out. Oolong tea, no sir, green tea, no sir. We are out of tea. Shichimi tōgarashi, out. The server explained that they depend on Sysco and that they are very unreliable, and that they are commonly out of stock of items, which I thought was odd. This is a chain somehow and how they stay in business is beyond my comprehension. There were only about four or five tables with guests while we were there. I would not expect it to last long if revenue is the gauge by which they are measured.

Yelp
By day 3 of my trip to NOLA, I was craving my fix of anything Asian. IYKYK. I got so desperate, I doordashed Gyu-Kaku to the hotel room. It's great that they have bento style meals to order. I ordered a mixed protein bowl (thinly sliced beef and chicken) and it came with rice, salad and miso soup. The portion was large and the food hit the spot!

Yelp
A few tips and tricks: - make a reservation - wear black and go on a hair washing day (as usual) - ask your server to help you turn down the heat (or turn up the heat) as needed - don't skip dessert! While a meal here is a bit more expensive than other options in the area, it is well worth it. The quality of the meat is high, and the service is fantastic.
google avatar

Yelp
We got a set menu and it did not disappoint! the service was on top of their game by bringing which dish out one at a time in good increments. we got all the upgrades options. only thing is that the meat was rather small cuts...the marinade was good tho. only came here for a special dinner as it's very expensive. it was a very enjoyment ambiance, the place is located in a convenient spot in downtown altho parking can be painful to find.
google avatar

Jessica K.

Yelp
Food was spectacular quality of meat was extremely high for the price. You have to get the addicting spicy cucumber it's better than din tai fung (ifykyk) and the garlic noodles those were amazing. The best meat was the Hirami skirt steak it was beautifully marinated. The tiramisu matcha cake was good as well. Lastly the service was amazing I loved our server he recommended such nice menu items.

Yelp
I frequent here a lot and today's experience was upsetting. There was an event nearby that caused me to take roughly twenty-five minutes to find parking. I had a reservation and knew I was going to be late due to me going around in circles to find a parking spot. I called the restaurant to make them aware but no one answered. Finally parked a few blocks away and speed walked over. Yes, I knew I was late and no one responded to my call but was hopeful of being lucky to be treated as a walk-in with an open table. Nope, I got there and was told there were no open tables and there was nothing they can do. I was late, yes but I called. I understand it's protocol but as I left, I checked their online reservation system and there was a table available an hour from the time I walked in. There were also times after that too. Why wasn't it offered to me? I was told they were fully booked. So what exactly is true? Were they fully booked or were their online system wrong with showing about six later reservation times available? I didn't mind waiting but it was not made available to me.

Yelp
No longer have All You Can Eat #AYCE NO FROZEN drinks. Service made out fine. Use Open Table to Book so you can collect 100pts.

Yelp
One of the best Japanese BBQ I've been too and the value was amazing. They have set menus which makes it so much easier than trying to pick and choose from a million options. You chose a selection based on price/ quantity of food you get and you're set. We did a mid tier one and it was more than filling. I enjoyed every item the brought out. Loved it!

Nancy W.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious!! So much food and very good service. Really attentive glass was never empty.

Yelp
I visited Gyu-Kaku twice in the last couple of months. On my most recent visit, the meat was not the best quality and did not taste like my previous visit. Overall, the place looked like it could have been cleaned better. Even though we ordered the same thing on this recent visit, we got less food for the same price. The server wasn't as helpful as she could have been and did not regulate the temperature of the grill. It was either too high (flames protruding) or too low and took forever to cook. Also, the grilled burned and they didn't replace it like the previous visit. This was a bad experience for the price we paid.

Yelp
Was so excited to find a place like this in New Orleans since I don't feel like we have enough Asian food places. Lots of options on the menu. Since it was our first time we just picked random stuff but in retrospect the Value Course for 2 would have been a better option for us. Started out with Shishito peppers, vegetable fried rice bibimbap, and 3 meats - bistro hanger steak, Kalbi chuck rib, and chicken thigh. Later we added on pork belly because we wanted just a bit more. Bistro hanger steak was by far the winner and I wouldn't personally get the chicken again. Rice was super good as well and we scraped every last grain out of the bowl. The waitress was super friendly, but what really jumped this to a 5 star was when my BF forgot his phone and one of the workers chased us down a block and gave it back to us. Was just super nice to save us the hassle of having to go back.

Zack W.

Yelp
The food was great and very filling and worth the price. The service was nice and the waiters were very attentive.

Yelp
Nice spot if you're craving Korean barbecue in New Orleans. They have different levels to their bbq. It really depends on how many people you have. This is a nice little activity to do if you're willing to cook your own food. We were seated immediately by the waiters who were especially attentive. They were available to answer any questions and show you how to do things if this was your first time. They do not have an all-you-can-eat option, but I think it's pretty reasonable for the portion size. All the beef type meats were my favorite for sure. Overall, this was a pretty good experience!
google avatar

Lacey D.

Yelp
This is a fun experience! My husband and I decided to order by single item, not a package. We got: takoyaki, wings, shishito peppers, mushrooms, garlic rice, wagyu short ribs, toro, hanger steak, spicy pork, spicy beef and pork belly. The takoyaki and wings were okay but we wouldn't get them again. The meats and veggies were good and the rice was delicious! The wagyu short ribs, spicy items (seasonal) and pork belly were the favorites but they were all very good.

Yelp
First off, this is an authentic japanese chain restaurant. You can go to Japan and find these restaurants. Everything was great from beginning to the end! It was a great experience for the whole family! Thank you for not playing american music, that would have just been silly. Loved it and will come back!
google avatar

Mandisa N.

Yelp
I'm obsessed. Wanted to go to a Korean bbq but they're all closed on Wednesday for some reason, so I ended up here and I am not even slightly disappointed. I think I can genuinely say I prefer this to KBBQ and haven't stopped raving about it to my friends. Currently trying to get everyone to come check it out. You can make a reservation beforehand. I came with a party of 16 (I know) and told them we're willing to be split up into many tables but they were able to accommodate us on two adjacent tables (4 grills in total). The whole set up worked really well so if you are looking to host a larger group of people, the have the capacity to do so. The meat is sooooo yummy?! I came at lunch and they have a really affordable lunch menu. Was a little worried that the two meat special wouldn't suffice but boy was I wrong. I was bursting at the seams. And I was so happy!! This might be my new favorite place, haha. Can't wait to go back and really can't recommend this place enough. You will not regret a single second there!
google avatar

Hong-an T.

Yelp
Might be a weird thing to compliment but their salad is SO good!! This is coming from someone who does not like salad. The service is good but was kind of slow when I went for my friend's birthday. The setting is nice for friends and family and the price was good for the meat that we got! The udon was also really good!
google avatar

Nate C.

Yelp
It's a great novelty that anyone should experience once, and a fun thing to do with friends , but I really did not enjoy the food all that much. The New York Strip steak was stringy, with far more gristle than is acceptable. The assorted vegetables we received were an odd combination of things that really were not ideal for grilling (whole kernel corn?!) , and your blanket policy restricting the way you will split checks is just laziness on your part. I will not return to this place.
google avatar

Heather W.

Yelp
I love this place. It's expensive but it's a fun activity when my mom is in town. We got the most expensive package like always. It's expensive so I couldn't do it often but I'd love to go once a quarter. The service was really good too.
google avatar

Cliff J.

Yelp
My wife was feeling Japanese BBQ tonight.. this place did not disappoint. The staff was extremely attentive and always smiling. The food came quickly and we never saw the bottom of our beverage glasses. Great selection of meats that were well-marinated and seasoned. The miso soup was just a bit too salty for me, but my boys would've loved it. We particularly enjoyed the hanger steak, curry chicken, and pork belly! We'd recommend this place for those in the area!
google avatar

Tu-Quyen P.

Yelp
Awesome meal, value for your money and a unique experience, great option in between all the delicious Cajun and creole food to enjoy in New Orleans. We did the four person Yakiniku which was PLENTY to eat, we barely finished. It gave a good variety of meats and marinades and cuts. My favorites were the Prime Kalbi Short Rib and Umakara Ribeye, but it was all delicious.
google avatar

Lonnie N.

Yelp
Great place to experience with the family. Cook your own meats that was deliciously seasoned. Allow plenty of time when you go.
google avatar

Rajiv A.

Yelp
It's funny because where ever my wife and I travel to, there is going to be a day that we will be craving for Asian food. We happen to come across Gyu Kaku, and to our pleasure they had an amazing variety of meats coated with either sweet or garlic soy sauce. And if you have time, go ahead and do the Korean BBQ for that is definitely worth it as well.

cynthia g.

Yelp
Cooking your own bbq is a fun twist! The sirloin was definitely the best of the six meats we tried! The broccoli and spinach steaming in foil packs with broth and seasoning were delicious! Good service!

Samuel W.

Yelp
My experience at this place is appalling. It's one of the worst dining experiences I've had in my life. The service is extremely slow and poor. It took 1.5 hours to get food after seated for a weekday lunch. We stared at an empty grill for 90minutes and no waiter even pretended to care. And it's not like the food is some gourmet that requires lengthy preparation. It's literally just BBQ. Avoid this place at all cost if you have any plans at all for the day.
google avatar

Tuhin C.

Yelp
Gyu Kaku has a pretty great lunch special deal starting at $13.95. The lunch special comes with two meats, white rice, and miso soup. I upgraded my rice to the garlic fried rice and if you upgrade your rice, it's made and served in a dolsot (stone pot). Additionally you can add on different vegetables or sides. A friend and I shared the Garlic Shio cabbage and it was really great. When we came, we were told that reservations were typically needed in advance before dining in there. However, they had open spots and were able to get seated soon after entering.

Yelp
Decided to try this place out on the recommendation of a foodie blogger in my area. We happened to be in Nola for the weekend (staycation) and figured it would be a nice way to spend our last meal in the area. First glance, felt like I was walking into a takeout place. That is until you turn the corner. Staff was welcoming and eager to seat us. Our server was very friendly and asked us (he didn't assume) if we wanted to hear the way it works. He then proceeded to explain the options and made some suggestions. We ordered our drinks - I got a virgin lychee Bellini and my husband ordered a Japanese beer. After going over what option would be best for us, we chose the meat lovers. Soo much meat to try and the appetizers and dessert were a plus! Great price for all that's included! We absolutely loved the salad and the house dressing! The chicken karage was great as well. Then came all the meats! I wanna say it was 6 plates and we liked 4 out of the 6 so pretty good still! It was fun to cook it yourself - neat little experience. The s'mores were fun too! Our server checked on us a lot at first but then he seemed to disappear. So much so that I had to ask a bus boy to find him for us. He finally did come back and we got a second round of drinks. All in all it was a nice experience. Nice and quiet restaurant and I think I would come back with some out of town guests for a nice dinner experience. Lots of food for two people. And you can take home whatever is left so long as you cook it first!

Christa W.

Yelp
The food , the music, the drinks, the hospitality..... everything was PERFECT 10 I can come here multiple times a week and never get tired. The staff is welcoming and the desert is delicious.

Sara B.

Yelp
My husband and I dined here on Saturday night. We have been to another Guy-Kaku in Philadelphia. The New Orleans location put Philly to shame. The location was clean and the waitstaff was incredibly friendly (shoutout to Duy!). The highlight of the night was the incredibly fresh meat and sides. Everything tasted great and was very high quality. If we are ever back in NOLA we will definitely be back.
google avatar

Tania C.

Yelp
While in NOLA had dinner here with the family after my kids found this place on yelp. This was their first time cooking food at a restaurant, they enjoyed the experience. Food was very flavorful. I had the garlic ramen, delicious and not overly garlicy. Didn't have to have reservations, did walk in for dinner and was seated right away. Prices were decent.
google avatar

Sarah M.

Yelp
We ordered their spicy beef ramen to go. It came hot and was delicious! Very spicy but I loved it! Would order again!
google avatar

Hector L.

Yelp
Great food and atmosphere. Plenty of choices of meats and starters for myself and my wife to choose from.
google avatar

Cindy L.

Yelp
My favorite restaurant! The very first time I dined here, I fell in loveee. The food is so delicious and full of flavor. The staff is friendly & service is usually good, only had 2 experiences where service felt slower than normal. This place has a decent amount of tables & the atmosphere is nice. I would recommend to have a reservation beforehand. A couple of my favorite items to order : Appetizers: spicy addicting cucumbers & spicy tuna volcano Meats: prime kalbi short rib & harami skirt steak Rice: garlic fried rice or beef sukiyaki bibimbap
google avatar

Hannah C.

Yelp
Food was amazing. I got 2 drinks which were the blue lagoon and a white peach cosmo and they were delish. We will definitely be back!
google avatar

Maia S.

Yelp
Omg just go and try it yourself! The food is so good and get different marinades! The cheesy corn is good, salad is good. Service is on point!
google avatar

Maeve G.

Yelp
I do love the experience of being able to grill your own food! We ordered the course for four and got an order of pork belly and sausage as well. The appetizers are maybe my favorite part, I absolutely could eat a meal of just the tuna volcano and garlic noodles. The meat was fabulous as well. But our waitress was not good. She didn't tell us what anything was so we didn't know which meat we were grilling (except for the obvious ones like sausage, chicken, shrimp, pork belly). I'd like to know which is which. We also had to flag down a different person to change the grill top and get drink refills. She barely spoke to us the entire time and it really took away from the experience.
google avatar

Kristen R.

Yelp
Loved this place. The bibimbap is to die for. Comes out streaming hot and already full of flavor. I ordered the raw meat course for 2 that came with the shrimp because I have to have my shrimp. There was only one type of steak that didn't have much flavor. This is the perfect place for date night or even family night with kids. I can't wait to go again. Quick service & nice servers.
google avatar

Kelsey Z.

Yelp
First time trying japanese/korean style BBQ. Meat lovers for 2 was more than enough food, but good to note it is not all you can eat. They charged us an extra $10 for an extra side of bibimbap. Steak quality was great and s'mores dessert is a cute touch at the end. Server was kind and checked on us multiple times throughout our meal to refill drinks/clear empty plates from the different types of meat.
google avatar

Jeremy L.

Yelp
Got rid of old manager. Got it back up and running happy to say- Angela and jevario got it

Haley W.

Yelp
Amazing food and an amazing experience. It's a must try. I guess I'm still typing cause I need 85 mf characters. I don't have that much to say.

Yelp
This chain restaurant has a nice ambience to it. It is quite spacious so probably good for groups. But keep in mind it is mandatory to make reservations here also it can take a minimum of 2 hours to eat since it is a cook you're own meal type place. We have the dinner for 2, the meats. It was pretty good. You get 5 starters. Loves that salad dressing and that fried chicken kaarage. I could not stop eating it. Amazing dipping sauce for the chicken too, it had a kick to it. I also got to try the garlic fried rice and I would order that again for sure! It comes as an extra not with the meats. 6 different meats and the best was the ny strip. Hands down. It was phenomenal. I was excited to see that dessert would be smores. You can. Never go wrong with that! I ordered a cocktail and honestly it qaa terrible. It was the coco-mo. The rum drink but it tasted like flat sprite or 7up. The geisha was much better. And the beer was fine. The utensils are mainly wooden chop sticks. You can ask for a fork. And soups come with spoons. Service was on point. She filled our drinks and changed our grill. And explained how long to cook for each meat. There is an automatic 18% gratuity. I prefer to tip more though just know it is automatically on there already. They do have happy hour from 2 - 6 with half off cocktails and some dinners are half price too. I may have to venture back during happy hour. Also there is only street parking, no lot. You do have to step up a few steps to get in and through the restaurant. The bathrooms were a but if Journey, you have to travel what seemed like to the next door building to use the facilities.

Angelynn J.

Yelp
This place was the best food I had here in New Orleans. It was so good. I loved the garlic fried rice and the short ribs. The garlic spinach was amazing. Our waitress was very kind and helpful but I can't remember her name. They had a vodka strawberry lemonade and it was delicious.
google avatar

Chassidy S.

Yelp
This place is DOPE! They have traditional food that you'd expect to see at a Japanese restaurant. They have ramen that I'd love to try eventually. I wanted to experience the Japanese BBQ. I tried the filet and some other cuts of steak. I ordered asparagus as well. Even though you BBQ the meat yourself, they season and marinate the meat for you. I cannot express how amazing it was. I cannot wait to go back with friends. I would like to try their cocktails too.

Darrel J.

Yelp
Very very very clean place (this is a big big plus for me). The meats are well marinated very flavorful. Service was top tier. Definitely recommend.

Sierra M.

Yelp
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE this place! My friends even threw me a surprise birthday party here! The place is always so clean and the people are always so friendly. I can't remember my waiter name but she did an amazing job explaining the menu to my whole party! The food is cook to order , but even when we ordered from the kitchen it came out hot and fresh. Everyone had a good experience and were glad that they got to try something new.

Yelp
Notes: 1) been here once 2) no AYCE on the weekends 3) 90 min time limit Pros: 1) really great food 2) really great service Cons: 1) not a lot of parking 2) weekends don't have AYCE This place is amazing! The hype for the place is real, and the drive is well worth it. The food is great. The deals are good. The service is fast and easy. There really isn't much else to say. My biggest disappointment with this place is that there is no All You Can Eat (AYCE) on the weekends. There's been plenty of times that I am crazy good food in large quantities for a good price and have been unable to quell my hunger. I am sure the place is amazing regardless of the AYCE but I think it's a good deal for big eaters. There's a lot of variety between cooked food and raw meat that you can cook here which is great. The snack options at the end are also a wonderful addition. The s'mores and ice cream hits the spot. If you haven't gone here, I suggest you find some time off of work to go on the week day.

Yelp
I love gyu kaku but this location was kind of a disappointment. The decor and service was very good. No complaints but the meat they serve is not good. The beef were all tough and not tender or juicy like the ones compared to NY and Japan.
