The Best Shakshuka In LA

"Habayit is mainly known for two things: being one of, if not the only, kosher restaurant west of the 405 and frying up a very good falafel. They’re enough to put this Mar Vista spot on our radar, as well as their tasty matzo ball soup, but don’t miss out on the great breakfast shakshuka. The tomato sauce here is on the chunkier side, which we certainly don’t mind. We love letting the yolk run all over before scooping everything up with some warm pita bread. And if you’re into the idea of some hamshuka, the dish’s side of hummus helps you DIY some on a whim. Habayit’s take on the dish is tangy and tart from the tomatoes, with a bit of freshness from the sauce’s onions and bell peppers, plus it has a nice kick. It’s also a great size for ordering an extra side of falafel too." - sylvio martins

The Best Falafel In LA

"As the only Kosher restaurant west of the 405, Habayit has kept westsiders’ falafel cravings at bay for over two decades and arguably makes some of the best in town. This is the kind of place we like to slide into on a rainy day for a warm matzo ball soup or a hot shakshuka that’ll make us feel something again, but the falafel still makes its way onto the table each time. Habayit’s falafel has an extra crispy (and somewhat chunky) outer crust with visible bits of chickpea and fried herbs in each bite. They pack a great crunch and have a crumbly texture where you can see each of the ingredients once you take a bite. They’re salty, garlicky, and taste great when drenched in a healthy serving of smooth tahini." - sylvio martins

Habayit - Review - Sawtelle - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

It’s also a great size for ordering an extra side of falafel too. Food Rundown Falafel Plate A solid option for a midday falafel break, but we’d be fine ordering a side of these with some dips or shakshuka instead. The golden brown falafel is extra crispy and very garlicky, but the tahini and Israeli salad it comes with are pretty boring. However, the hummus is delicious and perfect for dipping, with tons of nutty sesame and smoky paprika flavor coming through. Babaganoush We’re big fans of Hayabit’s babaganoush and it’s the first thing we get every time we stop by. The meaty roasted eggplant is balanced out with lots of lemon juice and peppery olive oil, and goes great with that side of falafel. Matzo Ball Soup This matzo ball soup has all of the salty, aromatic qualities of a hearty chicken soup without too much rendered fat floating around on the surface. The broth is light, super fragrant from the copious amount of fresh dill, and the massive matzo ball is nicely firm without being too dense. Shakshuka Tomato reigns supreme in this chunky shakshuka. It’s nicely tart, with a hint of heat from plenty of paprika and garlic. The eggs aren’t front and center here, but instead, they’re submerged in the sauce almost like yolk-filled dumplings." - Sylvio Martins

15 Soulful Shakshukas to Try Around Los Angeles, 2017 Edition | Eater LA

"Habayit may be famous for its falafel and matzo ball soup, but their shakshuka is as warm and authentic as owners Amir and Pnina. The shakshuka itself is not spicy, but add some of the green schug sauce (made with Habanero and Serrano chilies) to turn the heat up to a 10. The dish is served with pita and traditional Israeli salad." - Oren Peleg

This great place is small, so slow down or you will miss it. It is ever so cute inside. It has fun art that my grandson loves. It is super clean and just a fun place to go. It is Israeli food, but also quite American as well. It has a wonderful Mediterranean flare. All of their food is Kosher, which is always nice and all of it is just great. The menu is not huge, but it does not need to be. They have something for everyone. We love the service. Some of the servers have been there awhile and they know everything and if you are looking for other Kosher places or even a Temple if you are a visitor, they have you covered. The servers are always smiling and are great with kids. It is super family friendly. We love all their food, but a must have is their Matza Ball soup. It is perfection from the soup to the Matza Ball. You can get it in a cup or bowl. We have been here a few times over the years, sometimes for breakfast and other times for lunch. Their Shakshukah is a great way to start your morning. It is a wonderful breakfast item. It comes with eggs and salad with a great home made tomato sauce. They also have just eggs if you want. For lunch we love the Israeli Vegetables Salad, which has Finely cut assorted vegetables with lemon dressing, tomatoes and cucumber. It is the bomb. If you want to be daring, get their combination salad, which is a combination of all their salads. It is so good. Their Humus is great and has a wonderful lemon juice and olive oil. All of their Pita sandwiches are tasty as well. Another favorite is their grilled salmon. It is cooked perfectly and you will love the fresh flavor. There is not one thing not to like here, so go and have fun and relax.

Shawarma plate + a couple falafels a la carte. All authentic flavors and generous portions.

Google
Dropped by here for some falafel after a gig. Staff was friendly and the food tasted great. Setting is humble, unpretentious and comfortable. I am obsessed with schug (zhug/zhoug) now since I am a fan of spicy food. If you're dining in, you'll spend more than 20 for sure, especially when you plan on tipping generously but it's worth it. Everything was herbal, uncompromising and absolutely tasty. Recommend!

Google
First of all i do not agree with the 10-20$ a person(by google) the prices are preety high i paid close to 50 for a small soup and pita kebob . The pita had 2 very small pieces of kebob and wasnt that tasty at all

Google
Delicious falafel, baba ghanoush, hummus, and pita!

Google
Great israeli food, reminded me of my childhood cooking at home and when i went to israel to visit family. Deliciously soft pita, great tahini and garnish, delicious shnitzel and israeli salad. Very authentic to israeli home cooking, they are perfectly names “the house” in Hebrew. Only downside is portions and price. $21 (with tax and tip) for a tiny sandwich with no sides. Over $30 for plates. But they are kosher so it makes sense.

Yelp
I must have DoorDash-ed this place 20 times thus far. The food is wonderful and the portions are large. I've eaten falafel all over the world. Habayit's ranks right up there in excellence. One thing about falafel, however, is that is doesn't travel very well. If you don't eat it as it just comes out of the oil and take it home or have it delivered, it's just not very good. But this place has a secret: it's the only falafel I've ever experienced that travels wonderfully. I highly recommend it for take-out or delivery. But the star attraction at Habayit's is it's chicken soup. It's expensive as hell but worth every penny. Truth be told, it's an elixir on a par with my late, great grandmother's. Wonderful, wonderful stuff.

Yelp
I like the pastries in this place, but today for the third time I got a croissant that was undercook, a 5 dollars pastry that I can not eat, yes I can drive back and get my money back, but I know I won't do it as is out of my way and I don't have time, and that is why I haven't say any before about this place, that I won't be back to, the other times I just blow it off, no more.

Yelp
Really disappointed in this place. Ordered falafel sandwich and fries. Falafel was burnt and nasty. Lettuce was soggy and pickles werent fresh. Fries were greasy and undercooked. Disgusting!

Yelp
we had our second return here and I ordered some Matzo Ball Soup and Schitzel in which it was slamming good. Packed with lots of good Kosher chicken, and the rice here is delicious. Have such a nice family vibe of food here. Always a pleasure to visit again.
google avatar

Yelp
Excellent service makes up for disappointing soup. Going to try some other items since the owners are super nice and everyone has an off day now and again. And, maybe my grandma's chicken soup is totally different and I am just used to what I grew up with.

Yelp
Habayit (pronounced Ha ba yeet, meaning "The House" in Hebrew)) serves authentic, outstanding Israeli food--what people think of as "Greek" but with my favorite flavors of foods such as falafel, baba ghanoush, hummus, salat--made with fresh vegetables--and endless, fluffy, warm pita bread. As a vegetarian, I was in heaven. My spouse had matzah ball soup with tender, shredded chicken to make a wholesome meal, and the guests we brought (a family from China who were down for an eating adventure) enjoyed the spicy meatballs. We stayed until close to closing time, but the server was friendly and patient with our ongoing ordering, and the chef kept the comida coming. We devoured everything we ordered. I'll definitely be going back to Habayit whenever I'm in L.A.

Yelp
They did a very nice job for my kosher guests. I will use them in the future. Ordered through yelp/ grub hub, food came in a very timely manner.

Yelp
Super delicious and fresh food. Their falafel is without a doubt the BEST in L.A. Love their grilled schnitzel and matzo ball soup too. The staff is very fast, friendly and efficient. Highly recommend!!!

Yelp
Unfortunately, the proprietors have elected to use a hechsher that is far from universally accepted, leaving many observant Jews unable to eat here. There is no judgment whatsoever of anyone who chooses to eat here; just suggesting you ask your local Orthodox (or Conservative) rabbi first.

Amanda Z.

Yelp
Had never heard of this place but ordered on Grubhub and the matzoh ball soup and hummus were incredible. Will definitely go there in person soon.

Yelp
Went there for lunch with my friend. Ordered shawarma in a pita... Got dry pita with pan fried chicken pieces (salt and pepper) no shawarma seasoning and a bit of salad... no hummus nothing else... don't know how they can even call this shawarma pita.., this is the worst pita I've ever had!!! My friend ordered Kabob I. Pita - got 2 small kabobs and bit if salad dry just like my pita... no hummus no nothing- will never go back there again.

Yair B.

Yelp
Love the falafel amazing food will be back again if you like good kosher food and great service go there yami

Yelp
Some of the best Israeli food I've had outside of Israel. Food was fresh, service was great. Highly recommend!

Esther D.

Yelp
I've been waiting to visit LA to try this spot for a long time. We had the kebab sandwich, falafel sandwich and hot dog sandwich for my boys. Everything was fresh and delicious. The young man who served us was very pleasant. The dining area is small, it seems to be more of a take out place. I hope to come back again before we go

Yelp
The BEST Matzo Ball Soup! Every time I get sick, my husband picks this up for me and it's like a miracle - Feeling so much better the very next day. It tastes absolutely delicious and has so much flavor. The staff is really nice and I love that it's on the Westside.

Yelp
Was craving a matzo ball soup. Looked at reviews and this one looked promising so I checked it out. The matzo ball was flavorful as was the soup. The teen kid that took my order (I'm assuming owners son?) was such a sweetheart. Adorable and polite. Great food and service to boot!
google avatar

Eric R.

Yelp
Great kosher food with an Israeli twist. I recommend it even if you don't keep kosher. Fun tip for non-Hebrew speakers. The restaurant name is Hebrew for The House.
google avatar

Jaki S.

Yelp
I was craving for a good middle eastern food... I looked for a kosher place in the west side of LA and habayit popped out right away... I ordered the beef kebab... it was so juicy, fresh and delicious. The owner gave a couple of falafel to try on the house... no words can describe!!!!! Thank you habayit... I will be back very soon!
google avatar

Andy S.

Yelp
This is the best Mediterranean place on the west side and kosher doesn't get much better than that. The daughter and father combo make the best kebab falafel balls and have the fluffiest pita. Everything is amazing you can't go wrong. I love this place wish they're hours were a bit longer, but hey that's my only criticism, not too bad. B

Alex W.

Yelp
We wanted to like this place so bad based on the reviews... but it's completely over priced and mediocre. Absolute robbery. The best part is their pita bread. Otherwise, the $25 underwhelming grilled chicken schnitzel was burnt, dry and had no flavor, and the $16 "large" matzoh ball soup is by all standards small, comes with one tiny matzoh ball and the soup was full of little chicken bones. I'm sitting here wondering what the hell just cost us $90. Super disappointing.
google avatar

Jolie C.

Yelp
Tried and true, never misses. When we had to go to the ER for an unexpected medical emergency on NYE, we were craving comfort food after the ordeal. Not only were they open but they had food ready for us in 10 min. That post-ER matzah ball soup turned the whole day around.
google avatar

Doron M.

Yelp
Great authentic home style Kosher food. Family owned and operated. The food is always amazing. Gladly would return and highly recommend to anyone that appreciates good Mediterranean food. Take out and delivery available to make things better.
google avatar

Brian W.

Yelp
Their location off an unassuming area of Pico Blvd., in a sleepy strip mall, is still unassuming. The food on repeat visits tho... hasn't matched up to the first visit's mind-blowingly good beef kebab. In particular the grill combo plate was pricey and decidedly underwhelming. Consistency is the hallmark that's difficult to achieve for a lot of places, and as superb as Habayit is capable of being, they aren't always on their A-game. 3.5 stars, but I will round up.
google avatar

Galit Z.

Yelp
I came in for the first time Felt home right away The food was amazing I would definitely come back
google avatar

Sheyla M.

Yelp
If you are looking for great Mediterranean food this is the place ! Their flafel plate is the best i had for a long time. The service was great and we got our food quick. Loved it.
google avatar

Chris I.

Yelp
Service- Decent but that's about as much as I can say about it. The Place- pretty small and they did not have the air conditioning on the day I was there and it was pretty hot. Food- I had the Combination Salad and it was pretty good. Parking- Can be challenging as the parking lot is small and shares with other businesses. I have to find parking in the neighborhood and walk over.

G K.

Yelp
Inconspicuous location, tucked into a corner of a tiny strip mall, but worth finding for an excellent falafel sandwich! Ordered in person, took about 15 minutes for my to go bag to be ready. Included was a yummy sauce, hummus and relish. Will be back. Be aware I tried to go many times before, but they close early, so check their hours before heading over.
google avatar

Paul W.

Yelp
This used to be a staple lunch option when I was working at the office nearby. Have supported them through Covid ordering take out/delivery. Recently have noticed the quality and quantity included ... hoping is just a glitch in the matrix, as is usually fantastic. The falafel is fantastic - full of flavor and cooked to perfection; never dry. If you don't mind some heat, load up on their green chillie sauce!!!
google avatar

Eidan E.

Yelp
An absolute gem! We live in San Diego, but always stop here each time we are in LA. Get their beef Kaboob pita, be sure to keep your head up as you may pass out eating it... its soooo good! Small place, I wish there was more outdoor seating but staff friendly and good quality food. Highly recommended!
google avatar

Yelp
love love love hummus is delicious pickle raddish so good. everything made to order freshly

Yelp
They have the most delicious, fresh, healthy food!! Owners are authentic Israelis. Pita is delicious and soft!

Yelp
Delicious home cooked Israeli food just like "babysit". We had a Shawarma, chicken, soup, salad plate, and schnitzel always amazing.
google avatar

Yelp
"Habayit" means home in Hebrew... exactly what I felt when I walked in. I ordered the falafel plate, it was so fresh and delicious. I also ordered one ball of kebab which was extremely so juicy... I will be back again for thank you "Habayit" restaurant.

Yelp
Was thinking maybe coffee and that does show up in the search on the site, but the menu gotten me thinking: Hey, what about lunch? So, after peering into the small storefront and concluding that this really isn't a place to hunker down with a writing tablet of any sort -- I found a free table and took a seat. Groups of maybe eight as well as solos and also four tops: that's who were seated here one mid-afternoon in the early new year. The menu has much to offer, and depending on what you fancy, you'll probably find something that will grab you. They do breakfast and lunch here. I settled for the Falafel sandwich, which I liked. As soon as you sit down, a small plate of pickled cucumbers and lettuce/cabbage appears. Nosh away a bit while you wait, but you won't have to wait long. Service is attentive and the kitchen is efficient. My falafel sandwich came with a soft and almost thick pita bread. It's a little hard to rip or cut, so hand on to it! I liked mine a lot. The combo of the cucumber salad et al makes a tasty accompaniment nestled inside with the falafel. The two separately provided sauces were Tahini and a spicy sort of Pesto. Both are very good - but be warned the Spicy sauce really will grab your attention in a hurry. Have your drink at the ready. Definitely recommended, and I look forward to trying more items.

Yelp
I have been coming here for six years, and this is hands down the best Israeli food around. Matza ball soup, falafel, schnitzel, and meatballs are all some of my favorites. The quality is incredible, and it's never been compromised. They do catering, and one of my Jewish friends uses them for all her parties ( at least the ones she used to have before Covid). Please support this mom and pop small business and order pickup!

Elias M.

Yelp
How have I not known about this place!! Very very good falafel, hummus and per my friend who was with me, the Schnitzel. I will no doubt go back. With paper plates, cups and utensils, the place is beyond simple, and it happens to be Kosher of you care about this stuff, so leave your attitude outside and just go to enjoy some food Israeli food.
google avatar

Brian M.

Yelp
I discovered Habayit during my COVID walks. I'm a big fan of felafels and I have to tell you these are arguably the best I've ever had!!crunchy. Tasty. Great hummus. Some green herbaceous and very spicy condiment that is SO GOOD!!!! They are just getting by so do yourself AND THEM a favor, go get takeout!! You'll be SO happy you did!! I'm going today for lunch! Third time this month...... and it's only the 8th!!

Mark T.

Yelp
I had heard of Shakshuka from a doctor who recommends eating more savory than sweet for breakfast so I searched all over town for a place that made this dish. I ended up underwhelmed. While the dish was fine, it was watery. I really wanted to have this restaurant be a place I would frequent.
google avatar

Devang S.

Yelp
Having tried the majority of mediterranean food on the Westside, Habayit is my #1 choice for sandwiches (goodbye Bay Cities). The falafel sandwich is a well executed classic. Everything tastes so fresh I would have thought they had a garden in the back. As someone who is picky about falafel, Habayit does it right. The outside has the right crispness while the inside tastes fresh - not dry at all. For an adventurous vegetarian option, I recommend the Sabih which is a mixed of hard boiled eggs, fried eggplant, hummus and veggies. A light yet energizing option that hits the spot. I always opt for extra pickles which are a myriad of pickled vegetables, and would buy them by the jar if possible
google avatar

Linda K.

Yelp
I've been going to this restaurant for a few years, I never made the review but decided to finally compliment local business. Great food fresh cozy place, great service! Love their kabob! Highly recommend!
google avatar

Roberta M.

Yelp
I'm only giving it four stars cuz I only ordered Matzo ball soup. The soup itself was delicious. Not salty, not greasy, very flavorful with dill and veggies. The matzo ball itself was in a separate container as it should be. It came with a pita which was also homemade and the real deal! I'll be back for sure. The name means 'home' and it is a perfect description of the food I had

Ejek S.

Yelp
The food is absolutely the type you want for your LAST MEAL. Everything is always fresh and plentiful. It's worth every cent plus more. I love the "Sliced Baked Potato". The vegetable soup is the best thing next to grandma's and she's been gone 20+ yrs. The prices are so worth it. Not high at all. The customer service is actually "Family Service" because you feel the love & care.
google avatar

Yelp
This. Place. Is. Awesome. Looking for authentic, fresh, tasty Israeli food anywhere in the West LA, Santa Monica area, this is you home (Bayit). In search of great authentic Mediterranean, which has been scarce in our home area, We drove up to give this place a shot and man, they did not disappoint! From the Great Matzo Ball soup, the light and tasty falafel and Sabih, it was just perfect. With the biggest win of all being the Authentic, thick and warm pitas, that can hold on the this food, unlike the common thin "pita" found in so many other "Mediterranean" places, which fall apart at the first sight of a drop of Tahini. It's a drive for us, but we will be back, and soon.

Evelyn K.

Yelp
This humble long standing Israeli restaurant serves up my current sandwich obsession - Sabich. IMHO better than anything, even much loved falafel which they also excel at here. Sliced hard boiled egg, deep fried eggplant, Israeli salad (cucumbers/tomato), tahini sauce and amba pickle stuffed into soft homemade pita bread (itself super delicious). You get on the side a small pot of fiery green chili paste to use with discretion, extra tahini for those who like it saucy, and a container of simple pickled vegetables like cabbage and turnip - Israeli kimchi? - a healthy prelude to eating this glorious sandwich. Take out or eat in.

Kevin K.

Yelp
Loved it! I was craving for mediterranean food and I tried habayit restaurant and it was so good! Everything was amazing, service is great and the falafel plate was exactly what I was craving for. I will be back!!

Yelp
LA's strip malls are strongholds for ethnic cuisine; Habayit is no exception. Tucked away next to a dry cleaner and massage parlor, you'll find Habayit. Don't let looks deceive you in this uneventful strip mall: the minute you walk inside at this place, your eye catches meticulously cleaned tables, and you just know it deserves an A. And not only for their appearance: the food is excellent. Basic honest food. My favorite is the Pita Falafel, 5 Pita balls snug in a Pita surrounded by true Israeli salad (finely chopped cucumber and tomato). I love garlic sauce with my falafel, it wasn't on the menu. No problem. The owner made garlic sauce especially for our order: how's that for customer service! Served with spicy sauce and ever-present tahin sauce. My lunch companion ordered the plate of baba ganoush with pita bread and a side of 1 falafel ball. Fresh orange and carrot juice available! Wonderful! I can highly recommend this place! s is as good as falafel gets for me: tucked away in a

Yelp
I don't even need to give this place a review because anyone who knows knows, but they do everything perfect and it's family owned. So.. good job I guess. Goodbye.
