Meet the Five Food Carts Coming to Southeast Portland’s Lil’ America Pod - Eater Portland

"Containers of Hainanese chicken rice — fortified with sauces like ginger scallion, lemongrass Thai chili, and sweet soy sauce — make their way out of the window at this chicken-centric cart, which also serves fried chicken, pan-seared chicken with black pepper sauce, and wings. The cart will soon add braised pork belly with soft-boiled soy sauce eggs to the menu." - Janey Wong

At this Lil’ America standout, aromatic Hainanese chicken rice and soy sauce chicken are the move, with sauces that sing. Praised by local critics and guides; Fracture Brewing’s page spotlights the cart’s role in the pod’s BIPOC and queer-led lineup.

Had the popcorn chicken and fries the order of fries was huge and the chicken had an exquisite taste. Very good in my opinion and it was quick still had time before my lunch was over...

Google
We went to this spot for the first time yesterday for their sandwich week special and it was amazing! Hands down, the favorite of the week. The thing that really blew me away was the hospitality. Even though it was a busy Saturday, they went above and beyond. The food also came out super fast. We will definitely be back here again soon.

✅ Chicken rice ✅ Jollibee gravy ✅ Chicken skins All around a perfect food cart. Thoughtful specials too :)

I know that Nong's has a certain reputation in Portland as having this great Hainan chicken dish, but honestly, this place has the actual best Hainan chicken in portland. I am absolutely addicted to their Hainan chicken. I'm actually baffled trying to explain how good it tastes to people because it looks so simple. Once when this place was closed I went to Nong's to get their Hainan chicken and was seriously let down. Go to Hawker Station.

My favorite place to go to in Portland. I love hacker fare. This is the best in the city hands down.

Google
So yummy! Stopped by on my way to class and picked up a chicken and rice and Hong Kong hot milk tea. 10/10. I want to go back and try everything! I might just do that!

Google
Really great food! And nice people as well. I got the chicken and rice with extra broccoli and it was perfect. Chicken was really tender portion size was great.

Google
The curry brisket is definitely awesome. Better than what I eat in HK.

Yelp
OMG - I was not hungry, having just had lunch. My sister really wanted to try the Hainan Chicken so we stopped by. She couldn't decide between the Hainan Chicken and Rice or the Braised Pork Belly, so she got both and I said I would help her. It's the least I could do BEST HAINAN CHICKEN and Rice loves up to the hype! So tender and the ginger scallion is what makes this dish. The Braised Pork Belly was also tender and delicious. I'm sensitive to salt so I had to limit eating this. If you can only choose one, go for the Hainan Chicken! It was raining lightly so I appreciated that each of the food carts were covered and much of the seating areas were also covered. The food was ready pretty quickly. There's something quintessentially Portland about sitting outside in this rainy weather and the steam rising from your dishes as you open each meal.

Yelp
The folks at Hawker Station are so kind, and the food is PHENOMENAL! Y'all gotta try their special for Sandwich Week '25--it's a highlight!

Yelp
Went there with family on 8/2, Friday. First time at the Hawker Station. We met the owner Andy. Pretty easy-going guy. Was very friendly and kind. We ordered 4 items, Hainan Chicken, Soy Sauce Chicken, braised Pork Belly and their Chicken Wings with fries. Andy also gave us free Lemon Ice Tea. That's was so cool. The food was outstanding. It was savory and fresh. I would definitely go back again. I think my fav is between the Braised Pork Belly and the Hainan Chicken.

Yelp
Chicken winner, chicken dinner! Hawker Station is a food cart located in Lil America on Stark St serving Hong Kong and Singapore style chicken and rice dishes. We got the chicken and rice and it was delicious! The rice was fragrant from the chicken and the chicken was tender and juicy. The skin on the chicken added an extra fattiness, great for chicken skin lovers! The scallion and ginger sauce was fresh and aromatic, truly what Hainese chicken and rice are all about. We got a braised pork belly to go, and although I didn't get to try it, it looked good! They are generous with portion sizes and don't skimp out on the meat. Andy, the owner, runs specials frequently that he updates on Instagram. He definitely keeps things fresh and exciting at his food cart. With summer around the corner, it is food cart and patio season! Put Hawker Station on your summer food list, and you won't be disappointed!

Yelp
Hawker Station has a limited menu, but it's the things they specialize in. Their top selling and most popular dish is Hainan Chicken Rice. Chicken is very soft and juicy. Portion size is standard. Comes with a few sauces (I'm just guessing on these): a ginger sauce with spring onion, some plum sauce, and some kind of medium level hot sauce. Overall it's a good dish - runs $15 I also tried their fried chicken skin. This dish was just ok for me. It was seasoned with salt and pepper but somewhat inconsistently. Some parts were salty some were more peppery. I would prefer that they used more flavors to season the fried skin.

Yelp
Delicious fried chicken with gravy. Yummmmmmm! Freshly fried so it was crispy and juicy.

Yelp
I love this whole area. This was such an amazing place to have lunch. It's so well diverse and I appreciate and support it. I brought my son here for some 1:1 time. The service was friendly. The orange chicken is dry. The flavor was okay but the main thing it needed was more sauce. I think trying other things on their menu would have been such a hit. I am going to keep trying this place because I can see it's worth it. I still recommend it.

Yelp
Definitely one of my favorite food stands in Portland, the Hainan chicken just hits the spot when I'm craving it. Chicken is always cooked so well, love the skin on it, and the rice is so flavorful, with great sauces. My only minor complaint is that the ginger in the ginger scallion sauce is often stringy/older, but I am still going back and am so grateful to have a Hainan chicken place in Portland. Keep it up!!

Yelp
Full disclosure, I know the owner. That being said, I visited for lunch on NYE and ordered the braised pork belly w/ a soft boiled soy sauce egg. The meat portion was great and the dish was enough for two meals for me. Friendly service, easy parking and nice outdoor covered seating. BIPOC owned and this food cart pod, Lil America will have all BIPOC and LGBTQIA owned carts. Great spot in inner SE to check out.

Yelp
I like to come here for the Hainan chicken rice. It seems to be the only place in Portland that does this recipe well with the correct sauce and chicken oil rice. I've ate Hainan chicken all over Asia and at Savoy in LA...so I can't say this is at the top of my list, but for Portland, it's good. I had their Hong Kong milk tea, and it was way too watery and didn't have the right flavor with the tea nor milk. For $4+ a drink, I think the owner(s) should know this for improvement.

Yelp
Excellent Hainan chicken! And the chicken rice is the guest star! We had the fried chicken as well, and it is some strong competition to other favorites! The chef was kind and had great vibe energy that made the whole experience even more pleasant. Loved it so much we ordered thru Uber a couple days later. New favorite lunch or dinner option, highly recommend!

Yelp
From all the chicken rice I've had in Portland, this is definitely my favorite. The chicken is juicy, and perfectly cooked. The broth from the cooked chicken is used to cook the rice, giving the rice more flavor. You are given a generous amount of chicken too. It's topped with some ginger scallion oil and a side of two sauces, sweet soy and a chili sauce. They also added in some cooked broccoli for some veggies on the side. During the weekends they have specials too, when I visited here they were serving cubed beef with red rice. Definitely tasted like shaking beef, it was really delicious. Beef was tender and rice was flavorful. They also service other dishes like soy sauce chicken rice, shredded chicken rice and wings. Overall, I really recommend the chicken rice they have and will come back again!

Yelp
Super great people and food is yummy! I would recommend this place! I got the last order of the Chicken and Rice night and got a little extra food. Was very pleased. Finding a parking spot was difficult, but it was worth the circling around.

Yelp
Just coming back in here to say that the food from Hawker Station is consistently excellent. If you have the opportunity to get their special - I recommend you just go for it. Recently had the Thai Basil Chicken special and it was absolutely DELICIOUS. Their steak + spicy eggplant sauce is EXCELLENT. And my go-to when there isn't a special is the first item on the menu - the chicken and rice with the ginger soy sauce. I go out of my way sometimes just to get the chicken and rice, only to find that I've been sidetracked by the current special. This is one of my top places to eat in Portland. I would also like to say that I was paid nothing to shower praise on Hawker; in fact, I have paid my own money to keep eating their delicious foods.

Yelp
This is what locals called food carts. A collection of stationary food truck parked together and tables setup between them. Famous at Hawker Station PDX is Hainan Chicken Rice. This is a dish from Singapore. Basically breast meat with a ginger green onion sauce. Parked next is a beer only RV. Quite a nice dinner.

Yelp
Was really looking forward to trying the chicken dish with scallion oil. Positives first: rice was really flavorful, scallion oil was delicious and I enjoyed the hot sauce. Negative: my chicken was cold! I am a person that likes my food really hot or at least all the same temperature. Eating hot rice with cold boiled chicken was not the ticket. I cannot say I enjoyed this dish to the fullest and did not feel the comfort food sensation because of how cold the chicken was.

Yelp
Makan! Makan! so good. Chicken rice is excellent. Andy's ginger scallion sauce is what makes it the real deal. You could easily split one order between two people, especially if you get some sides like the fried chicken skin and pork spring rolls. My only regret is choosing a crappy parking spot with a short time limit and not being able to spend more time to try the whole menu and chat more with Andy. If you only kinda sorta speak Cantonese, practice a little before you show up, Andy will ambush you with some Cantonese if he finds out your family is from HK.

Yelp
Other reviewers wrote similar excellent experiences at Hawker. I went on a weekday about 5:30pm, the choices I wanted were still available (sometimes Hawker do sell out). I ordered the Hainan Chicken Rice $15 and Braised Pork Belly Rice $16. Both were well prepared and excellent. I say this because he wasn't the owner or at least other reviewers said the owner is Asian, but my server was not and all was done right. I particularly appreciate the chicken was boneless. The braised pork belly rice is the best in the Portland Vancouver area, there isn't a place that serves it nicely braised, tender, tasty, and not too fatty. You can search for braised pork belly in Yelp and you won't find too many photos of it, and won't find it in the online menu, guess it is not a frequently ordered dish. Highly recommend Hawker Station PDX, best boneless Hainan Chicken Rice and superior Braised Pork Belly Rice, can't beat the price either.

Yelp
Easy to find spot and easy to find parking. Food was amazing. The red sauce has a kick to it. Hainan chicken - chicken was juicy and rice was very flavourful. Chicken skins are super crunchy. Plenty of seating place outside but it was kinda cold so the brewery next door lets you bring in food.

Yelp
Update: Met the actual owner today and I stand corrected, it's Chinese owned but the lady working the first time I came is Vietnamese (Not that it matters though because she knows how to prep the chicken just as good). That leads me to my next point, consistency. I got the Hainan Chicken again and it was spot on tender, tasty, & same fat portion of chicken and rice. I love how both times, I got a little crunchy cartilage but never any shards of bone to pick out of my mouth. Seriously, if you like chicken, you ought to give this cart a try. No regrets. Holy cow, I know it's only a matter of time before this place really blows up which makes me a little hesitant to write about this review because it's so good, I want to keep it a secret lol. Despite offering Hainanese style chicken, the owner is actually Vietnamese but don't let that dissuade you from the authenticity of this chicken dish. This is literally the best Hainan chicken I've had outside of Asia and in Portland aside from making it myself. Like you know about that one boiled chicken place that blew up after Pok Pok? Yeah I'm talking about Nong's Khao Meng Gai which I dare say doesn't even compare to Hawker's which is 10x more tender, juicy, fatty, twice more chicken offered, cheaper, comes steamy hot, and costs less. Some places get watered down after blowing up and going high volume so I certainly hope that won't happen here. For now, this is my number one go-to for Hainan chicken & without going into further detail, you'll just have to come give it a try to understand why

Yelp
Simple but delicious chicken rice! The portion is good; meat is moist and tender; owner is very nice. We've tried Hainan chicken rice and soy chicken rice, and both are very good! I wish the rice had more chicken-infused flavors, but very excited to find a gem that does chicken rice right in Portland! Pro tip: call ahead as food truck hours can vary (may close early if business is slower than usual). We loved that when we called, the owner waited for us for 30 mins when she was planning on close earlier.

Yelp
Do yourself a favor, order the Hainan chicken. And you better get the fried chicken with gravy rice too. And the shredded chicken.. Don't forget to add a few lemon pepper wings. And leave a tip. You'll be back.

Yelp
Love this place! After ordering on the apps from them multiple times, I finally had the chance to get it in person. Such great comfort food with the Hainan chicken rice, my go-to when I want a taste of my childhood. Cooked perfectly, flavorful and the sauces are awesome. The new location is easy to get to with plenty of street parking. Thanks for being there!

Yelp
Hainan chicken rice is really good from here! I ordered some through DoorDash and it was good, and I liked the 3 sauces it comes with. My husband enjoyed his shredded chicken rice dish but liked the my Hainan chicken better. Highly recommend you check this place out.
google avatar

Charles S.

Yelp
Absolutely the best Hainan Chicken! Juicy tender meat cooked with just the right heat and time. Fresh and tasty sauces + amazingly flavored rice bring everything to perfection. Worth a trip just for this!
google avatar

Justin P.

Yelp
I was really excited to check this place out given the craze around it. I got the pork belly over rice and truffle fries. Overall, both were just okay...the pork belly was dry, which made it hard to finish. I'd probably go back but to try something else.

Yelp
I wish I lived closer to this place, I'd eat here at least once a week. The chicken plate has great flavor and texture, and I have enjoyed every single weekend special I've had the opportunity to try. Please bring back the pepper sauce steak again!

Tony V.

Yelp
Every chicken meal is bomb af Love the fried chicken skin Go to spot when craving chicken Rice is perfectly cooked

Yelp
What once was under a different name, has returned with a new name and renewed sense of awesomeness. Hawker Station is by far one of my favorite Asian street food carts in Portland. Myself and my partner have had everything on the menu at least once and nothing has been disappointing. I know that sounds farfetched but it's not. The food here is imbued with passion and authenticity and it shows in the flavors and aesthetics. I personally recommend the Shredded Chicken Rice and the Soy Sauce Chicken. The Shredded Chicken is my new favorite due to it being packed with flavor. Andy, the chef and owner, strikes the perfect balance between handmade and professional finesse. You feel like your best friend is making you the best food, and that's a difficult thing to accomplish. Not only that, his level of charisma really sets the tone for the whole experience. I highly recommend visiting this cart next chance you get and giving any of the menu items a try. It will be worth it.
google avatar

Davvy L.

Yelp
The best Hainanese chicken rice you can find in Portland. This is what I grew up eating in Malaysia. The rice is perfectly cooked and flavorful you can just eat it by itself. The chicken is tender and the hot sauce is on point. I prefer their hot sauce over Nong's but that's just me not accustomed to the Thai style hot sauce.

Guthrie S.

Yelp
Don't want to be a debby downer, but I don't feel like this is a five star spot quite yet. Got the shredded chicken. Chicken was served cold and tendon-y with warm rice. House sauce was light and slightly salty sweet, but not particularly flavorful. Truffle oil was just a hint, Cheering for this cart, but was a bit disappointed to spend $18 for a lunch including tip at this spot. Maybe I just had bad luck with the cuts?

Jen L.

Yelp
Their chicken rice is amazing. I used go always go to Nong's but this place is just as good, if not better. It comes with three different sauces and I love them all. I actually like their sauces better than Nong's sauce. Highly recommend!!
google avatar

Josip R.

Yelp
If you like Nongs Khao Man Gai, then you will LOVE hawker. The 3 sauces that came with my dish were among the best I've had. Didn't know what to expect or which one I would like, and ended up loving all 3 as they added such a customizable flavor experience. More spice needed? Add the orange sauce? Look for sour or zest kick, green is the way. Want that sweet savory umami in your dish, the black sauce is for you. I added all 3 and it was quite the treat. The balance was a beautiful orchestra of flavors at every bite. Will be back often!!

Kat E.

Yelp
Authentic Chinese chicken and rice!! We especially liked their fried chicken legs, wings, and skin! The hand pulled chicken on rice was also very juicy and filling! Reasonably priced and super friendly service too! Will definitely recommend to other out of town friends!
