Modern European with Caribbean flair, inventive cocktails, warm ambiance

"Built as an autobiographical extension of myself, I designed this restaurant to express my childhood flavors through the advanced techniques I learned in the U.K., Spain, France, and the U.S. The food isn’t traditional—I put my own spin on Jamaican heritage and spice, keeping dishes clean, tasty, and good-looking. On the menu, the salt cod, the oxtail, and my version of peri-peri chicken capture that spirit; as a kid at Nando’s I’d smother the bird in sauces, and here I put the whole sauce on the chicken and call it a day—not super traditional, just the way I like it. My team, many of whom worked with me at Crown Shy and Saga and understand the level we need to be at, keeps me on my toes and inspires me. We’re striving to be one of the best restaurants in New York and are always pushing to be better." - The MICHELIN Guide

"A Chelsea restaurant with a European menu full of Caribbean touches that also gets recognition from India Doris; it opened as Haymarket in June, then changed its name in August." - Nadia Chaudhury

"On 7th Avenue in Chelsea I sat in a stylish room of mirrors, modern lights and cozy banquettes where Chef India Doris crafts a nicely trimmed menu pulling European and Caribbean influences. The most personal dishes stand out—salt cod fritters arrive with a fiery habanero aioli and braised oxtail capped with cheddar polenta is a dreamy, elevated pie—while a strawberry cheesecake reimagined as a Swiss roll makes for a clever, beautiful finish; a gorgeous cocktail bar framed in recessed lighting rounds out the experience." - The MICHELIN Guide

"I was struck by India Doris’s bright, singular menu at Markette in Chelsea: mostly British and European classics reimagined with Caribbean joie de vivre. The salt cod fritters—triple‑fried—are a must and manage to be light, airy, and pungent all at once; the peri‑peri half‑chicken is deboned, brined for days, juicy inside with a crispy skin and bright marinade; and shared plates like a bibb salad with an everything crumble, butter beans in tomatillo salsa verde topped with crispy soppressata, and braised oxtail over crispy cheddar polenta are all delightful. The dining room reads a bit formal, but the pleasant green palette, pitch‑perfect service and consistently delightful food put me instantly at ease." - Charlie Hobbs
"At Markette, no one should be allowed to leave the building without trying the braised oxtail (vegetarians can apply for a special permit). The standout order at this Chelsea restaurant is like a shepherd’s pie after a makeover montage, with meat that’s tender to the point of liquid under cheesy, torched polenta. Several dishes—from a chef who draws from her London/Jamaica roots—achieve those familiar-but-unexpected highs. There’s smoky-sweet grilled prawn sprinkled with pumpkin seed chili crisp that hits like savory granola, and a homage to Nando’s peri peri chicken that’s perfectly cooked. For a classy but not overly splurgy evening, it’s a great new option in the area." - Bryan Kim, Molly Fitzpatrick, Willa Moore, Will Hartman, Sonal Shah
